I wish I could find an apprenticeship. The last thing I wanna do is develop bad habits! I'm just concerned that people may not want to take me in. Not because of my drawing ability, portfolio, attitude, hygiene or work ethics- it's because of my age. I'm a 50 year old female. I'm learning all I can from you to try my best to avoid bad habits. It does suck because I've gotten flack for learning on my own, but if no one ever takes me in to learn from them, I really have no choice. It's not in me to say "I have such a passion for this, but I'm not going to pursue this passion unless I find an apprenticeship somewhere." I sincerely wanna learn every single thing I can, but I'm on my own for now.
Totally agree with you on the hygiene and presentation. As an apprentice I deal with front of house alot and customers see me first so its so important we give a great impression!
Hi Jono, you mentioned that it could negatively affect chances of being taken on by showing the shop owner tattoos you've previously done. Do you think the same applies to tattoos made on practice skins? I'm learning the basics from videos like yours to get a better feel for the trade before I go out looking for an apprenticeship. I feel like if I can show some understanding of how the machine works and techniques used it could work in my favour. What's your opinion? Thanks for the tips, Alex.
Alex Spencer I think you should be ok showing practice skins. Like you say it shows your artist ability and some understanding of using a machine. Though with my apprentices I personally prefer to teach them using machines with no prior knowledge purely in case they’ve picked up bad habits. I think ironing out bad habits is harder than teaching someone from scratch. This is obviously just my personal opinion and doesn’t necessarily apply to every potential employer. Good luck with your apprenticeship! Let me know how you get on.
I think ur cool Jono u tell things a way I could understand and I hope I don’t ever become one of those arrogant artist u talk bout I want to be an artist but still likeable
Twisted Tattoo I thought you said you was old?? I’m 39! I actually read an article once which said something about it becoming increasingly common for tattooists starting their careers in their mid to late 30’s. My second apprentice was 30 and my third apprentice was 34. In my opinion it’s about dedication and ability over age. A lot (not all) of teenagers are too busy living life and partying to put in the dedication needed.
Twisted Tattoo most apprenticeships are at best unpaid, this is what most people find hard, to sustain an income whilst learning. It is a hard industry to get into but it’s totally possible.
I heard that you had a family when you were and apprentice, so did you work and do that? How you take care of your bills and be an apprentice a the same time?
I had a job as a taxi driver where I could chose what days and times I worked. So I’d earn money from that, do my apprenticeship and stay up learning in the early hours. It was a huge balancing act!
Walked in a tattoo parlor talked bout getting a full body tattoo den it transformed 2 beenin a trained worker at the parlor didn't think much forgot about it messed around bought a tattoo gun now I'm going der dis Monday ta c if they'll steal take the offer wish me luck
Hi bud i got some question to ask u if ur too busy to answer that's fine. as i got full time job as i got lot debt to pay so i cant pack in my job yet. do u think someone might take me on as Apprentice if i can only do couple of days a week and a full weeks when i book week for holiday?? If not If i did do self taught for three years or more than do u think a tattoo shop would take me on as a tattooist if i am a self taught tattooist?. I'm thinking of doing a tattoo school for thing soon as were loud do go back ro normal do u think that's good ideas?
It’s a minefield isn’t it. I totally understand about not being able to pack your current job in as this is your main income. Some studios will take an apprentice part time and some won’t. It really does depend on the studio. What I will say from a studio owner standpoint. I’d sooner take on a part time apprentice that gives me 110% effort and goes home and continues to work on what they’ve been taught rather than a full time ego warrior apprentice, but that’s my opinion. Approaching a studio for a job if you’re self taught or not shouldn’t really be an issue as the owner should be looking for talent, good attitude and quality work and not whether or not you’ve done an apprenticeship. As for tattoo schools, I’m on the fence with this. I’m not going to slate any companies but be very wary and do your research before committing because this could be a very expensive mistake. I’ve seen some schools in the past which charge absolute fortunes and when you peel the layers back a little, they don’t actually know how to tattoo never mind teach how to do it. Some of them are all about taking your money. Don’t get me wrong, they’re not all that way but there are a lot like it. I’m currently working on a course which is basically going to condense all my knowledge and be affordable at the same time. So I think the bottom line is, either of the paths will lead you to your goal, just some cost more and some take longer. Hope this helps!
@@JonoSmithTattoo thanks very much for replying to my questions that's very helpful information. Well i hope some of tattooists in my area think like u give me chance i would work my nuts off for shore. I'm all ways drawing I'm still improving my drawing skills im not bad but not good enough yet in my eye's. I thought about practicing line work on fake skin to get my line work down to tea but there lot opinions on what to use rotary or coil as i got bad tennis elbow things what vibrator lot start my elbow off hurting someone said I'll be better of with rotary because of that so putting that to one side. I know u say coil machine u should start off with but lot people say rotary is better because if u don't set up coil machine properly u can mess up someone skin so its safer with rotary but hearing what u said about them so I'm not shore where to go on it if u get me. So this course your putting together will that be were people can come to u to learn or will that be online courses?
If you’ve got problems with your elbow I’d probably go straight to rotary as this will be a lot less strain on you. The course I’m working on will be an in depth online one over many hours. I’m definitely still keeping the TH-cam videos uploading but because this will be so long and in depth it requires a proper course. Sounds like you’ve definitely got the right attitude anyway. Good luck with it all!
Everything you say is so obvious but its so true, why i dont think about all this 😁 but where the f*%# are your tattoos man? You look like you love tattoo more then most, so what you have 1 letter on your hand? Just? 😁 strange man.. thanks again, i like you more every video..
