    I love love you sharing your successes and your failures... i too folowed the advice from vidieos and did pinching of my in ground ifgs regardless of height on the summer solstice to try to get them to bear fruit before fall and it didn't work. These trees had all died back to the ground the winter before. They stopped growing after pinching and set there some for over a month before growing again and no figs... dismal failure. I too watched advice about leaving trees to get frost... my nights had been in the 40's... some were lignifying and then my first freeze came and it was 22! Killed all my cuttings and my trees have already died back to the ground. I, like you will try to do bettr next year. One other problem... i m trying kind of the japanese method of espalier and bending over the shoots to grow a trunk horizontally along the ground to make them easier to protect in winter. Many branches i bent over died. I once saw an espalier video that said not to bend branches more than 45 degrees for fruit trees. Have you ever had this problem? Your trees are beautiful. I would like the horizontal branches to be closer to the ground to make winter protection easier. New Mexico 7b here with late spring freezes and early fall freezes.

      I’m not sure why they died? Died in winter? If I could grow in ground I would do low espalier style.

      @@basementfigs the ones I bent over were during the growing season that stopped growing and died. I won't know about the ones I bent over in the fall until I uncover them this spring. Most of them were already damaged by the 22 degree first cold spell so I don't think this will be a good test year. I will keep experimenting and enjoying your videos.

    Agree with NOT PINCHING!!!! I find it interrupts the Hormones within the tree, will eventually set the tree back. I also use the 2yr method!! Be well!

    Not just the frost the cold also. I see people online showing tiny little green trees going in their garage which will probably get down to 35 or 40 degrees. Not good for a baby tree that is just starting out in life. And other people saying it's okay to do that😢

      What’s the alternative for a young tree if you don’t have an indoor grow setup?

      @basementfigs  ปีที่แล้ว

      @katedalzell8007 where u plan on storing them?

    • @katedalzell8007
      @katedalzell8007 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The plan was my unheated garage. Can get down to mid 20’s at the coldest point. Most of my figs are 1st and 2nd year figs.

      @@katedalzell8007 do exactly what I’m doing. Keep them close to the garage, and any threat of frost and freezing temps, bring them in. And I’m talking about the ones that haven’t lignified.

    What is your winter temperature in your garage? ( or what is optimal temp for winter storage ) Do they need light or you can keep them in dark? Great content and very informative 👍

      My garage get down to 20 degrees maybe lower. Last year we had days that went into negative. On those days, I try to run a space heater. It’s a pain. NO light.

  • @kicknadeadcat

    Are you confusing pinching with pruning? Because when you pinch the tree it shoots out lateral branches from the point you pinched and below so you get a lot more branching instead of vertical growth. So you can get that goblet form on all the branches that you pinched. I usually get three to five branches that grow from those spots and they usually produce figs on all the branches

    • @basementfigs
      @basementfigs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. I don’t like pinching. I’m not a fan of the goblet look. I prefer single trunk training the first year. And building scaffolds the 2nd year. I didn’t know better so I pinched my first year.

    • @kicknadeadcat
      @kicknadeadcat ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't pinch my first year either unless it starts to grow too tall. First year I will usually prune to about 18 inches let it grow out the next season. I don't like my trees taller than me I do like them wide with lots of figs on the branches. I do the same thing with my inground trees except with them I will pinch twice a season. I don't let them get any taller than about 8 ft but they also get 8 ft wide. I have 25 trees in the ground now the oldest being two seasons and those trees had hundreds of figs on each tree and more than 3/4 of them ripened in time. By the way it's Mike from fig tree Organics. AKA kicking a dead cat🤣. Check out the featured section for what I plan to do by girdling my branches in the spring it's in the featured section

    So what do you do if your young figs have not lignified? How do you encourage dormancy?

    • @basementfigs
      @basementfigs  ปีที่แล้ว

      Slow down watering. Cold temps. You need to learn to stop fertilizing dependent on the growth rate of your figs. Can’t have green growth coming up in Sept. IMO you need to bring in your young figs inside to a cool dark place. It needs to be cold enough that they go to sleep.
