That is a truly premium mix. You cut no corners. TH-camr and nursery owner Gary Matsuoka does some excellent educational videos on gardening, soils, etc. HIs is convinced most of the commercial potting mixes that rely heavily on tree bark are killing plants. Especially perennials. He talks in his videos about some of the stuff you talk about. I think the mix he now uses and sells is around 65% pumice and 35% peat. I recall him being a fan of rice hulls, too, but his suppliers don't like dealing with it in bulk. Thanks for the video. I was sweating just watching you work in that heat.
This mix was inspired by great gardeners like him. I like pushing the standard norm of what the masses do and love learning in the process. Some are successful ideas, some not so much. Also, be careful of the idea of pine/tree bark. I started to see some studies saying that it’s a myth but haven’t had the time to dive into it too much. Ty so much for watching it! I was sweating that day and sweating posting the video. I wanted to make sure I did a good job explaining and inspiring!
I ordered these items from Build A Soil. I can't wait to see what it does for my figs next season upon wakeup. Thanks Homer, for the knowledge and technique.
My recipe contains sand, decomposed granite (DG), peat, perlite (larger size), rock dust, activated biochar. Additional ingredients are added over time via microbial teas. 33% worm castings will compress the soil to much but I use worm castings as a top dressing often. I’ll make a video within the next two years 😂
Heck yeah that was such a great video. Thank you for taking the time to share the golden soil recipe. I do something similar, but wow I just learned SO MUCH. Thanks again
yyoooo crazy, i was looking on your channel earlier for soil mix for figs... then boom after 30 minutes of looking at other vlogs... you posted this! awesome, i'm gonna try this! thank you for making this video!
Beautiful! You spend a lot taking care of your figs. The main reason I would use a small amount of cococoir is it does not go hydrophobic. Other than that I wouldn’t waste the time. I save a lot creating my own worm castings, compost, leaf mold, biochar, etc…. But it takes alot of room and alot of time.
Nice video. I highly recommend checking out Subpod worm composters. It’s an in-ground system. I now have several around the property. The planting beds they are in grow unbelievably well’ and the worms have overwintered in my SE Pennsylvania winters for 3 years now. All the benefits of worm composting without the fuss. Lastly, consider wearing a mask when mixing and transferring to containers. The particles can really mess with your lungs.
Nice. I’m gonna have to try this out. My mix isn’t draining very well and I’ve already lost some trees this year and have had to transplant six into the ground just to save them from dying.
Yes I think drowned a couple when I first started. Also make sure to let the mix sit for a week. The mix can get hot like when you make your own compost.
Hey Phil! Thanks for watching and the kind words. I broke it down at one point and it was roughly $22 for the same volume that the high end soil mix bags. The best part is with the pumice and rice hulls, after root pruning, you can re amend and keep using the soil forever
I agree with this mix is probably the best for any potted fruit plant. The issue with this is not many people will be able to afford it, Way too expensive. I would add 10% sand for more aeration. For my climate that much compost will hold too much water.
Coco is more sustainable than peat for sure. But speaking for North America, Canada the leading producer of peat, has stated many times that they set regulations in place to make sure we never harvest more than what is replenished. If sustainability is a concern, you can make this mix with coco coir. I did it my first year and had success.
You are the best teacher, and explain your logic so well. Please do add the recipe as I would like to modify my soil with your recommendations. A compost thermometer would help you watch the temp of your bin when it drops below 80, you could add red wiggler composting worms to boost the life in the soil and they would add aeration.
Hi Homer Adam here from QLD 🇦🇺 😊👍 love your mix I use organic soil / compost mix / perlite / worm castings /lime thats my mix and my figs love it I maintain my figs with a product called Neutrog / which I mix various seamungus / Gyganic / rooster booster/ then I maintain this with liquid seamungs / GogoJuice and I use a mulch called Whofungdung which these products have all the biological microbes your plants need look it up Homer and also once a every season I use POPUL8 SAME products your doing really well mate 👍 I always enjoy your videos 👍😊🇦🇺
Not bad… $23.20 per cubic feet… that’s on par with the top soil mixes. And mine is designed to last forever with proper top dressing and organic fertilizing practices.
Hi Homer, I love the video watched it like a dozen times got all my stuff from builder soil and I had a few questions for you. Please hit up Figs from my cell number. I have a few questions, sir.
People are growing crops with salt water and coir is a waste product but you destroy habitats when you harvest peat which most people treat as single use.
Perlite you can crush between ur fingers… pumice you can not. Pumice last a lot longer than perlite. Pumice is a lot heavier than per light. so it stays mixed in the soil better and doesn’t float to the top as easily as perlite. But yea they exactly almost the same thing.
Great video!! So well explained!! Thank you I’m making my fig soil just like yours!! Blessings from Kentucky 🙌🏻🫶🏻🙏🏻🦋
You won’t regret it Mom!! Thanks for watching!!!

Thank you my friend for doing this video about soil mix very interesting and very detailed!!! GOD bless!

Great video. Just purchased a bag of worm casting. Good to see we have a local spot to get it from
Thanks for watching!!!! I can still remember my first time opening up a bag of worm casting… it’s called black gold for a reason!
Very good mixture, no wonder why all your plants are all healthy, thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Awesome looking figs. Where do you get your pumice?

Keep up the great gardening and don't stop making videos my friend 👍😊

Thank you great info I have figs and want to transplant some cuttings.

Finally, a fig soil mix video!! Great job, I'm in Texas and expanded shale is widely available, could I use that in lieu of the pumice?
The 5 mins of research definitely has me intrigued!!
Enjoyed this. I learned a great deal about rice hulls in this video. Question, what is the cost basis for a mix like this at scale? Thanks!

Thanks for watching… I broke down the cost and it ended up being $22 per cubic feet. That’s on par with the top end mixes like happy frog and etc.
Magnolia,Texas thanks you!
No.. thank you 😉
I like your mixture, it is exquisite, how long do you take before giving the first fertilizer to the plants recently planted in the mixture?
When I transplant, I LOVE having compost tea available for the first watering.
Do peat bogs produce faster than coconut trees? I thought coir was the sustainable alternative.

Where did you get the pumice?
Some hydroponic stores carry it. Or you can order from BuildASoil.com
Lets go
Let’s go!!
@@basementfigs thanks for doing the video! Question, what is your thoughts on line bark mulch from the popular 5-1-1 mix?
Will you be adding the ingredients to the description?
Yes. I tried posting this earlier but took a longer time to upload it. I’ll update tomorrow!
Add root pruning video to your list… I’m going to need some guidance on that soon.
Haha! Love the request!! Consider it done! Closer to end of season!!

what is your end volume and price per batch.
I thought about doing a calculation of all of this… 9 cubic feet for… let me do math… brb

I enjoyed the video but would appreciate that you include the recipe in the notes so I don’t have to take note. Please consider in the future
Will do. My apologies. I had issues uploading this video and caused me to frantically upload it with noticing that.

Knight Figs
My question is did you actually wait two weeks before you used it and how did it go?
Yes I wait to use it. 2 week minimum
@@basementfigs thanks Dude any other tips that You found out later?
@@FiggarigLarry sometimes I add crushed oyster shells to the mix. Especially if the mix is just for figs. It adds calcium and extra aeration!

Yes coir is a by product. Def a better solution for the world. Just doesn’t work as well for living soil.
But u just started me on researching about salt water farming.
Music is too annoying to finish watching.
Thanks for feedback
Pumice stone and perlite is the almost exact same thing
