Caring for Alocasia Polly, AKA Alocasia Amazonica, AKA omg what is this plant even called?

  • So I wanted to do a video about caring for Alocasia Polly. And being me, I ended up shoulders-deep in a rabbit hole concerning this plant's origin and name. Alocasia Polly? Alocasia Poly? Alocasia Amazonica? What is it?!
    Anyway, I do eventually get to the bit about taking care of Alocasia Polly or Alocasia Amazonica, whichever you want to call it.
    For more information about this plant's origins, see this page, written by Steve Lucas, co-creator and curator of The Exotic Rainforest located in Siloam Springs, Arkansas: www.exoticrainf...

    Yay Yay Yay! I just adopted this little guy last week and was researching about it and how to take of him-and now it’s all in one place. Was also researching the history of my new-ish Maranta Leuconeura and decided to put them side by side, and so glad that I did. Thanks Betsy, keep ‘em comin’! Can’t learn enough!! I have my 21 month old toddler watch as well and then we go and “say Hi to our plant friends”. 😍

    I absolutely have no idea why but My alocasia Polly hates when I keep the soil moist. I always let it dry out about 50%. Lots of people call them really tricky plants but they're actually really not.

  • @immatureradical

    I think that actually the primary reason people find this plant difficult is inadequate light. I know it also needs a good amount of humidity, but I had gone along with the popular claim that the amazonica absolutely needs to stay away from direct sunlight, but settles alright in what we could consider medium indoor light, and all I got was a plant that was slowly dying. As far as I've seen, the plant does not tolerate anything less than bright indirect light. I mean like 2000 lumens and above through the day, which most houses cannot provide for enough hours without a bit of direct sun as well. As for direct sun, I've seen that it can be acclimatized to take it for a few hours, as long as humidity is not very low and temperatures don't go much above 30 Celsius. So mine refused to grow from March to August, placed half a meter behind a western window, while monsteras, dracenas and ficus were doing more than ok. That was until I put it outside and it finally grew a new leaf in just one week. Moreover, it seems that its parent plants also grow in almost direct sun in their natural habitats.

    Wow-- that was super interesting! Diploid is actually when there are two sets of chromosomes, one from each parent. That's kind of the normal, common state for most organisms (like us) Polyploidy is pretty common in the plant world and means there are more than two set of chromosomes.
    I managed a greenhouse in the early 90's and remember when I first saw this plant-- I got some in to sell, but they were pretty sparse (only a few leaves -- 4 or 5??) And expensive. It was in a town with a university that was known for its science and natural resource colleges and I noticed most sold to students who were studying plant-related majors.
    I always wanted one and finally, 20+ years later, I got one last night-- A huge full beautiful plant....for $6.98 (american). Cannot tell you how excited I am!
    Thanks for this video- very interesting and I didn't know this about this plant!

    I am honestly struggling with this plant more than any other I have...
    When I got it (for a stupid price, I might add) it had four leaves, all with crunchy tips. I gave it some distilled water, not too much, and one leaf rotted on me - like, completely rotted. I stopped watering and just kept it in my bathroom, which is pretty hot and humid... another leaf rotted away, but it's putting out new leaves at the same time, so I don't understand whether it's fine or not.
    I checked the roots and they're strong and healthy, but it was sold in 100% coconut fiber, and that thing has zero drainage; I'm hoping that's what is causing the leaf rot. I'm planning to repot it in better soil and see what happens!

    Heeeey, I really hope you get to see my comment. I adopted a little alocasia polly a couple of weeks ago. It started out in my room because I read somewhere they actually liked a little shade. I noticed some yellowy/brown spots on a few leaves, which had me worrying because I love love love this plant. The spots are still there but not on all the leaves, I'd say I've seen them on 3, maximum. I misted it a lot less and watered it really thoroughly once a week. Until I saw drops of water falling from underneath the pot. I also placed a plate of clay marbles with water underneath it. I have one new leaf growing in but the thing is, it has a hole in it. I checked for parasites, nothing to be seen. I'm leaving it be for now but I did move Polly to a much brighter place in my lounge (where I keep most of my plants). It's a little dry in my flat, so I mist it or place clay marbles underneath. And I don't really know the temperature but I'm guessing it's below 23 degrees celsius... Can you think of anything I may be doing wrong ?

    • @betsybegonia
      @betsybegonia  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will take the plant a while to bounce back after you've moved it into brighter light. Just give it some time. 🙂

    Are care requirements the same for Alocasia Dwarf Amazonica? At least that's what my plant was sold to me as... I don't have a humidifier, but I've had it for about a month now and it has produced a BEAUTIFUL new leaf and the whole plant looks stunning. I do keep an eye out on the water and have taken it into the bathroom while I shower a couple of times. It is kept on a shelf outside the bathroom door, so perhaps the steam from showering nearby is enough to keep the humidity up.

    Great video Betsy, thank you so much for all the background. Super interesting! I have had my Alocasia Amazonica for just one week and it's started to show signs of severe distress already!! It's new home may not be bright enough, maybe not humid enough either, and under watering may have been an issue too, as I didn't water it when I bought it, fearing I may overwater it. So, it's in a new position now, east facing window, water, and we'll see what happens. Thanks again for your wonderful and informative video! I've subscribed!! ;-)

    Love you Betsy! I finally got my alocasia amazonica! So excited. I think I'm good with the humidity ( I have aquariums in every room of my tiny condo), but I'm wondering if tap water is ok or should I use filtered water. I use filteted for my maranta, but tap water for all of my other plants. I would love to use my aquarium water but I use a python ( a syphoning hose that attaches to the faucet) and it goes down the sink. A waste, I know, but quick and easier than draining into buckets. I also wonder if the water conditioner that removes the chlorine might harm plants, so ive never used it. Also, can these go ouside in the summer in a shady location? I Would love to display these on my patio ( no sun...blocked by huge oak trees).

    • @betsybegonia
      @betsybegonia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes you could put it outside but keep an eye on pests for sure. I know a lot of people get spider mites on these.
      I personally water mine with the Paris tap water and I haven't ever had any issues, but I also water my prayer plants with it and their leaf tips don't brown. I think it depends on your municipality's water system to be honest.

    If anyone has an answer to this or feedback I’d be super appreciative! I picked this plant up from a big box store mostly because I had just been to a nursery where it was three times the price and three times smaller. Somehow I got it in my head that the plant had root rot. So I panicked, stripped all the soil, washed out the roots, and put it in some new potting soil... later discovering that it wasn’t rotted I’m just a dummy. It definitely lost a lot of its bulbs in the process. SO MY QUESTION IS have I doomed this plant? I have over 50 plants and I’m learning about them constantly, always trying to educate myself and this is definitely a mistake I can learn from but I really hope I didn’t just kill a plant that had nothing wrong with it I’ll be so sad.

    Hi Betsy! Don't have one of these and I've never seen one where I live (Sousse, Tunisia), so I think the chances of me getting my hands on one is slim, but I loved the video anyway :) Thank you for taking the time to explain the name! Can you tell me how far your alocasia/marantacea shelf is from your east facing window? I've recently acquired 2 prayer plants and I can't figure out how far/near my east facing window they need to stop their leaves from browning at the edges. PS: The humidity is almost always above 70% here. Thanks again!

    • @betsybegonia
      @betsybegonia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The shelf is 1 meter away from the window. The Alocasia Amazonica is nearest to the window, the prayer plants are about 2 meters away. The window goes to the ceiling, so it's very tall and lets in a lot of light from above.

    Hi.. lovely video and thanks for unveiling the mystery behind the name. Well, I have this plant and it had four leaves. After about 5 months, all of them turned yellow (one by one) and finally, I have nothing left. A new leaf was coming up but I am not sure what's happening with it. Yesterday, I had dug into the soil to see if there was any root rot but thankfully, I found the roots to be quite healthy. What I found while digging were a few bulb like things ( I guess they were new plant precursors 😔) inside the soil which I replanted. I don't know what to do. I really love this plant. I live in quite a humid place (60-80% all the time) and it receives plenty of indirect bright light. Please help.

      When I let mine dry out too much, the smallest least turned yellow and fell off. It's difficult to say because this can also happen if the plant is overwatered. My best advice is to put it in a well-draining potting mix with plenty of perlite and don't let the soil dry out too much, but don't let it remain sopping wet all the time.

      To some extent but it evaporates very quickly so you'd have to do it multiple times a day to replicate a humidifier.

    I have a amazonica and it keeps yellowing its leafs. It has two separate starts in one but there is so many leafs. Every time I check the soil it reads about 3/5 in moisture and I haven't watered it since I got it. That being said it came in a non drainage pot. Should I repot it? I put rocks on the bottom of the plant and put some more perlite in the soil and it's still sad :( I'm gonna keep trying! I just hope I don't lose her 😔 I hope you have a blessed day 🙏 may you grow where your planted

    Hi there, thank you so much for explaining the history of their name, I did wonder and its super cool to know now!! I am a new plant mum and I've been wanting this plant for a long time. I finally got a big one from IKEA a week ago and its looking rather unhappy. I made the mistake of misting its leaves like I do with my calatheas, and now it has dark marks with yellow halo around them that are expanding, even on the newest leaves that are not yet unraveled. 3 of the lower leaves turned all yellow and died! I just moved it to a brighter spot, the soil is always moist enough but I don't drench it. I water it with filtered water, however I don't have a humidifier and I am yet to set up pebble tray for this plant. Please help, what should I do? Is this a fungal infection or maybe something else? Thanks in advance!

    • @betsybegonia
      @betsybegonia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mine has developed yellow spots since moving, I think the cold air in the 3-hour transit affected the leaves heavily. But it could also be a fungal infection, you should research that.

    Hi great advice vid. I'm new baby to gardening in general ; started last year and this year last month i started on in-house plants and my first purchase was this plant . The problem was all the plants that this nursery had of these species had rusted brown leaves so I picked the one with least rusty brown spots . Ive kept it moist with rain water twice a week since I purchased it 2 weeks back and placed a small bowl of rain water next to it to help with humidity as I don't have a humidifier and had kept the soil moist by keeping a stick in the soil to check for how moist the soil is. However 2 of the smaller leaves went super crusty and I've removed them. Now only 3 big leave a left and they don't look any good neither . But thankfully the brown rusty spots haven't grown bigger. I'm keeping it under a table lamp to get at least 7 hrs of light. Is there anything else I can do to help it recover and hopefully shoot new leaves. I live in South East UK so the weather is turning cold rainy and snowy soon. I really like to make good with my first indoor plant. :(
    Thank u in advance

    • @betsybegonia
      @betsybegonia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Reza! You might not see much development until spring comes, since the plant may be in a period of dormancy now that it's cold and the daylight hours have decreased. I say just keep caring for it like you are and hopefully it will put out some new growth when the weather gets warmer and brighter again!
      This is a tough choice for a first plant. If it does die, you shouldn't be too hard on yourself. Many experienced plant carers complain about their Alocasia Amazonica plants dying in spite of their efforts. Some other great and much easier plants you might think about looking for: pothos, Thanksgiving/Christmas cactus, and Hoya. 😊

    Any recommendations on keeping it from going dormant during the winter? I just got a pink dragon, and I’m told it has the same care as an amazonica. I have it with my calatheas. The humidity ranges between 55 and 70, the temp 69-73, and it’s under a full spectrum grow light. It looks fine now, but I’m worried about it going dormant.

    • @betsybegonia

      If the leaf is turning yellow and falling off, it might be overwatered. They don't like it when the soil dries out COMPLETELY but it can't be soaked all the time either. It takes practice to find a good middle-ground. It could also be shock from changing conditions. They also need lots and lots of humidity!
