Why importing a project is key in Adobe Premiere Pro

  • Many times you find yourself having to import something from a previous project and if you only know how to do this by importing the whole thing then deleting what you don't want, then you 'll be happy to know that you can just as easily pick the clips, titles and sequences you really need.

      I'm switching from Final Cut, so I'll be doing the same in future, but I needed it for a piece of work just now and I've imported, using the way you've shown, from two separate project files (for the audio in one and video in another) and Frankenstein'd them both together. It worked fine. Thanks again :-)

    Playing the DA ( Devil's Advocate ) here ... Also, a good reason to always use ( File - Save As ) always, and overwriting will NEVER happen ... nonetheless for grabbing multiple assets this is a Stellar approach ... but for just grabbing a full template project ie. one asset, Save As is faster and simpler, but do it as habit as soon as you make your dash and grab and overwriting that template will never happen ... trade-off max safety vs speed ... as always the customer is always right !
    Thx Mr. Wizard

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my experience, the problem is that users end up changing the original Project accidentally. They don't always remember to Save As.

    I wonder if this technique can be also used when using assets (music, photos, videos) for many projects. Regarding my previous question, in this case we don't talk just about intros. I have a client who every time is asking for using "same clip or same photo used on a past project" and they are long video clips, music loops, which are easily over one GB; so in this case is necessary to save a "copy" of every "repeated" media in the respective project folder? increasing the amount of space of the disk?
    I ask this because there is a common belief and "standard practice" stating that we have to save ALL the assets in one only project folder. Or maybe, saving not the intros itself but saving like an "alias" or "direct access". FCPX, I guess is able to call media using aliases , about Premiere I don't know. Is there something you can suggest me? Thx a lot!

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are using something many times, like an opening, then it makes sense to put that in a "global" folder where all your projects will access it. I do that for my show, I import my template but it points to the same assets each time. There is no need to duplicate those assets.

    Hello, very useful and helpful tutorial. But how can i insert a sequence into another sequence? I imported 3 sequences from old projects as shown in the video but now I need to insert the 3 sequences (the 3 from different projects) into one sequence (in the new project, the one i'm currently working). When i double click on the sequence it opens on the timeline on a different tab, i need put the 3 sequences in one sequence... Is that possible? Because when i drag and drop to the timeline it dosen't have the effects and the waveform.

    Say I have a finished video and I want to show a clip of it in another video. I could take the exported file from that video and put it in the project. But that would be a compressed file wouldn't it? If I take the sequence from the original premiere pro project it would be in better quality because it isn't compressed. Correct?

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, importing back in the export isn't the best solution.
      All you need to do is drag the whole Sequence into your current Timeline and you'll get the best quality.

  • @dscottprod

    Thanks for another very insightful video. I hit a problem though: the project I imported had been fully rendered, but when the timeline appears in my new project, it's not rendered at all (solid red line). I've tried this several times both with media manager and File/Import with the same result. If I reopen my original project (rather than import it) everything's rendered properly. Any ideas about what I should do? Many thanks!

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the expected behavior. I'm assuming you're rendering for performance purposes?; because you don't need to render for export.

    • @dscottprod
      @dscottprod 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VideoRevealed Thanks for your quick response, Colin--I was afraid you would say it's normal! Yes, I render for performance. My sequences are so efx heavy (warp stab, Neat Noise reduction, etc, etc on every clip) that I usually have to render overnight and I can't see any way to avoid it. My project involves restorative work on two old feature films w four hours total run time. I've been working for months on separate sequences, about 15 min each, and now want to import them into a new project so I can string the sequences together to create the two finished films. Is re-rendering everything my only option? Am I correct that there is no way to export the rendered sequences and reassemble them without some quality loss? I'm not a professional editor, but I took on an ambitious professional project. Really appreciate any suggestions you may have!!

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's important to understand that some things are saved in the Project and other things are linked to your hard drive.
      1 - SAVED IN THE PROJECT:
      Sequences
      Legacy Tiles
      New Essential Graphics
      Markers
      Adjustment Layers
      Subclips and Subsequences
      ...and other things too.
      2 - SAVED ON YOUR HARD DRIVE:
      All media (audio and video)
      Premiere Pro Projects
      So when you copy something from one Project to another (in the list 1 above), you will be creating a new independent version of what it is you're copying and deleting one will not affect the other.

    There's a healthy debate, I think it's fair to add, about how the Media Browser is a danger zone for Premiere beginners - and I think you'd maybe find the majority of Premiere Pro "Pro" users skipping it entirely as an interface! In my classes, in forums, and simply from helping people in quandaries, I've found a recurring theme: that people think they've imported stuff just because they see it in the Media Browser. Better, I say, to go through the "visceral" formality of importing into the Project Panel, even via drag-and-drop which is actually easier than the Media Browser. In short, I wish Adobe killed the Media Browser entirely. It's an open sore...

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FocusPulling (.com) Using FIle> Import or drag and drop misses all metadata and that can cause major issues with spanned clips, etc. It may be a little confusing for beginners at first, but the Media Browser has more important uses than just being an alternative to File> Import.
      Also, Media Browser is here to stay and you'll see it in After Effects and Audition too.
      If users are having issues, and they are not related to user error, they should inform Adobe so they can address it.

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FocusPulling (.com) And I forgot, the focus of this tutorial is to be able to use clips, titles, music, etc. from *within* an existing Project and that can only be done using Media Browser.
