    You got to give the movie credit for this: it tried to establish a pretty creative universe for itself. In Pitch Black, we really didn’t know much about this universe the characters were living in except that there was a place called New Mecca, and there were mercenaries and bounty hunters searching for escaped convicts and killers like Riddick, and that the particular planet they were on had nocturnal predators. CoR, for all its shortcomings, really blew the possibilities of this universe wide open.

    The theatrical release omitted the whole vision sequence of the Furian girl, the racial vengeance arc, and the physical mark. It tightened up the story and left Riddick's infant background to be deduced from the (copious) story clues. It focused the story on Riddick himself vs. the Lord Marshal as sort of Biblical retribution, and as personal vengeance for the Imam and Jack, rather than destiny. And it returned the surprise of the last moment reveal of the Purifier as a Furian ("The Furian in me hopes...").

    • @wilder11
      @wilder11 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Agreed. If I could have the Director's Cut without all the stupid Furyan crap, that'd be close to the best version possible of the movie. The theatrical cut likewise doesn't have the introduction scene with Jack/Kira in the cages, a scene I rather like.

    The eyeshine is described as a genetic trait exclusively inherited by Alpha Furyans like Riddick, whom is also stronger than the others. While all Furyans possess peak human physiology, the Alphas are known to be damn near, if not outright, superhuman. Not all Furyans possess this gene. The game is canon but the films retconned the games as Jack points out nothing he told her about the prison was true when it came to the eyeshine. In the game we never see Riddick get his eyeshine surgery as he described it. All the surgeon did was stitch up his wound. Riddick who knew NOTHING of his Furyan heritage simply attributed it to the surgeon as an explanation. He was wrong. Vaako even tells Riddick he fought a Furyan during the genocide that possessed the same eyes as him, further proving it is a natural trait.

    • @TearDownGenesis
      @TearDownGenesis ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That doesn't really make sense, because he didn't have those eyes in the flashback.
      Considering the game The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was released alongside this movie, I doubt the "movie retconned the games"
      The game was there to tie into the movie, like many games come out when the movie does, so to claim the game supersedes the movie is a bit incorrect. The rights belong to the film production house, so the games would be the ones that are less "canon" than the movies.
      Honestly, Kira's logic is so messed up, why would what Riddick say be true?
      1. Its not like every prison has a doctor like that.
      2. Odds of ending up in that specific prison is unlikely at best
      3. Odds of the doctor still being there, also unlikely.
      The way he phrased it in Pitch Black was perhaps the doctor was also a prisoner, hence being paid in cigarettes, so its unreasonable to expect her to find that same person.

    • @SantanicoDiabolical
      @SantanicoDiabolical ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@TearDownGenesis This is all lore which retconned Riddick's origin story, if you played the game you'd see that Riddick got his eyeshine after having a vision of Shirah. The prison doctor had nothing to do with it and was confused when Riddick confronted him about it. Also the fact that Vaako fought another Furyan during the genocide whom possessed this same feature shows that it is a natural trait. We see the Furyans are capable of transferring some sort of spiritual energy between one another, as Riddick also received his Wrath of The Furyans ability after yet another vision from Shirah. So Riddick's eyeshine activating after being spiritually visited by Shirah is not so unbelievable. Also Vin Diesel was closely involved in the making of both video games and even wrote the scripts. This is literally his lore for the character of Riddick. He owns the franchise and approved the retcons.

      What if the eye shine happens when a Alpha Furyan hits full puberty like say when Riddick was about to become full fledged Furyan adult the eye change was starting to happen and with the changing process comes total tempary blindness that's where the training in using the other Furyan Super senses come into play Hearing, Smelling, and touch

    Even though the 4th movie isn't out yet there is more on Riddick there was also 2 video games and an animated movie on Riddick and there might of been a comic or novel or something as well can't remember for sure on that but anyway to put Riddicks story in order the 2 video games chronicles of Riddick escape from butcher Bay which is a prequel to pitch black and happened before pitch black cause it shows how he got those eyes that allows him to see in the dark than there was the second video game chronicles of Riddick assault on dark Athena which continued after escape from butcher Bay than pitch black came after that than the animated movie the chronicles of Riddick dark fury which bridges the gap between the first and 2 movie cause it continues where pitch black ends before the chronicles of Riddick begins than you have Riddick than the 4th movie chronicles of Riddick furya

    Actually many don’t know or choose to ignore but Chronicles of Riddick is third movie within the franchise, second film of PITCH BLACK was PITCH BLACK 2: DARK FURY animated version which follows their journey from the planet and ends up in deep space where they run into trouble then Riddick leaves young jack with the gentleman who escaped with them that leads us to the next movie where the girl jack aka KARA is all grown up and the man is back with his family in Numaka city (I think). *On that note, it’s understandable that the animated version got lost in translation since it’s not very favorable b/c its production quality was so early 2000s dark horse animation.*
    Fourth one is just titled RIDDICK.

    I have always respected how straight up nerdy this movie is. Its not just a sci fi universe, its a deep lore, elemental witch ladies, undead empires, bio technology universe. It just throws you into it, like yeah you liked that low budget horror about a killer, here have this long epic about space politics and a killer. I find myself sort of intrigued by the sci fi lore, but its just so out of nowhere feeling.

    This is one of my favorite cult classic franchises. I’m a massive Vin Diesel fan. I just love the way he is such a stoic actor and yet carries such a presence. That’s not an easy skill to master.
    But this sequel made me so angry when it killed off Jack. I don’t understand the decision from any level. Storyline wise it’s stupid. Riddick doesn’t make any big moves after she dies. He kills the Lord Marshal because she was wounded trying to save him. But Jack didn’t have to die for the story to continue. She could have been close to death and her fate left to be revealed in the third film. Shock-factor wise, again stupid. The shock comes when Jack is tossed into the spikes, not when she dies. Her actual moment of death isn’t even lingered on. Only his reaction is. She dies, he puts her down and sits down in devastation. Character arc wise , absolutely asinine. Adult Jack is a great character that had so much potential. And her on-screen chemistry with Riddick made this movie. If the studio was worried that an adult Jack would be seen more as a love interest than a younger sister, then they clearly did not understand Riddick in Pitch Black. Or in this film. Nothing about the Riddick-Jack/Kyra scenes ever said sexual tension. He is a rough man who uses violence to prove points, but he never treats Jack/Kyra like he wants to get her into bed. Even the arm between her legs scene is only a move to immobilize her so she can’t fight. All he ever seems to have on his mind is keeping her in line-like father to a daughter-and keeping her protected. Which is why he gets so angry when he finds out she was turned into a sex slave at 12.
    Jack/Kyra was a pitch-perfect screen partner for Riddick. The franchise did her wrong. She should have survived this movie. And maybe even the whole franchise. I even would have been more than fine with only sporadic appearances in the franchise after CoR because she’s recovering from her injuries or fighting the Necromonger reprogramming, or Riddick forced her to go into hiding. Something besides death.
    Another cult classic franchise did the same thing-kill off the child the protagonist saved/protected in the first movie as soon as she became an adult in the sequel. I can’t say which one because you might watch it one day. But it was just as stupid a story choice there too. It meant nothing to the plot or the franchise to lose her. And it should have meant everything.

    • @ninjanibba4259
      @ninjanibba4259 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Everything you said I agree with.......but it doesn't help that every shot in the film with Kyra is sexualized and she's sweaty the entire time (personally the best thing about her and partly why I love her in this, the actress is hot) so it detracts away from her as a character being a person, that scene with the 3 guys touching on her was not necessary other than to make it sexual and it went on way too long, which broke away from the action(which worked for horny guys like me but for the wrong reasons to show she's a badass)

    • @kailyns8159
      @kailyns8159 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ninjanibba4259 I have to point out that Jack/Kyra was not the only actor sweating. Every single actor during the scenes on Crematoria is made to look sweaty. Their clothes have wet stains, their hair is stringy and damp, their skin shiny, and "sweat" drips off their faces during close up shots. In the arm-bar scene between Riddick and Jack, for instance, Vin Diesel has fake sweat dripping off his eyewear and nose. Regarding the Jack assault scene with the 3 men... I don't think the point of the scene was to show Jack was a badass at all. Rather, it was to prove that despite her skills she was always going to be vulnerable when she went up against male fight partners that were larger and stronger than her. This point is hammered home twice: when she gets overpowered by the 3 men and again when she stabs the Lord Marshall and is thrown into the spikes. What happens both times? She needs Riddick to finish her fight. I think the film did this not because she was female but because she was overconfident and had minimal experience compared to everyone else she fought. Was that particular type of assault necessary? Normally I'd agree with you that it was not. But I think it was for this specific character. It all goes back to her history as a sex slave. She was touched for years without her consent, used, abused, traumatized again and again from a young age. Once she got free, men touching her without consent became her berserk button. I think it makes her feel vulnerable and helpless again, which messes with her focus when fighting--we see that in the 3 men scene. So she lashes out violently, trying to incapacitate her attacker. The only man who can touch her without her consent is clearly Riddick. Because she trusts him completely, even in his violent moments. He is also the only man in the movie who treats a woman like his equal.

      @ninjanibba4259 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kailyns8159 I understand it better now that you fleshed it out more clearer with her in the prison, it was always shaky to me thinking about it cuz the movie barely focused on it, so it came off as something else
