In late 1962 I ordered a Gran Turismo Hawk! The dealer advised me of some coming options that would soon be available! Seems he had a mole in South Bend! What I eventually wound up with was a '63 with an optional R-3 supercharged 304 CID Avanti engine, front disc brakes, 4 speed, beefed up suspension, and other goodies. The Avanti engines had some modifications not found on the stock engines such as special camshaft, valve springs, etc! As I recall there were less than 100 built with that engine option! Car was very stable at high speeds, held the road unlike anything I had ever driven. It would peg the 160 MPH speedometer, Had it over 30 years, put over 240,000 miles on it. Sold it in '93, still running. Been kicking myself every since!

Well... I couldn't help but see the "for sale" sign in the back seat... Hope, if it has to go - it goes to a good home. I'd hate to see it resto-moded into something with yet another SBC in it - instead of some version of the 'Studebaker' V-8. Everything shouldn't 'always' be about..... "more power"

I really, really - really! Wanted an Avanti... as did a lot of people. So much so that even after Studebaker closed; The Avanti was revived 3, 4 ... maybe 5 times?
The hawks as well as the Avanti, could be purchased with an early version of the Paxton centrifugal supercharger, from the factory.
Gear-heads still lust after them - they were really one of the first cars to get into streamlining.
... as a kid, me and a few buddies actually pooled our limited funds (from summer jobs) and bought a President (a 4-door sedan made by Studebaker) with that same 289 Studebaker V-8... we ended up selling it, for parts - to some collector, who was restoring '54 Hawk - at least it died a "noble" death!

The car my Dad gave me was a boxy red & white Nash/Rambler. I tweeked it with rubber bands & coat hanger wire to get 3rd gear going right. even now I feel alive as I slip from my walker to slide on plastic under a car. What a delight to see a young fellow so avid & aware of real true cars. Thanks U_2 again.

In mid 1962 I went to a Studebaker dealer to order a GT Hawk. I have always been the type that avoids a "Me too" life style, so instead of buying what every one else did, I chose the Hawk! Dealer convinced me to wait for the '63 model because it would be available with some very interesting options and upgrades! What I wound up with was one of, as I recall, less than 100 built with the Avanti R-3 engine option! That was the fastest car I have ever driven, was capable of pegging the 160 MPH speedometer, cruised effortlessly at 80, averaged about 22 MPG at that speed, and held the road with tremendous stability. Absolutely no "float"! I sold it in '93, still running, with over 240,000 miles to a fellow who has restored it! Engine was top overhauled just under 200,000 miles! Wish I still had it!

@@alanblanes2876 Great year for cars in general, yes. Great year for Studebaker specifically, no. The Chevrolet-Ford price war basically crippled all the remaining Independents and the fact that Studebaker was completely unprepared for the demand on their lovely coupes didn't help matters. 1953 was really the moment when Studebaker was doomed as an automaker. Everything afterwards just forestalled the inevitable. However, that element of creative desperation is exactly why I love my '62 GT Hawk so much. It's just great!

My first standard shift car was a 1964 'Gran Wagoneer' station wagon our family procured when it had been totaled by the insurance carrier. My father and older brother was able to straighten a fender and it, the 'Gran Wagoneer' with its 3-on-the-tree manual shift became my brother's car after he graduated high school back in 1972. Our Wagoneer had that sliding roof that opened the rear of the wagon to allow for (?) a tall cargo load, i.e. Christmas Tree, small refrigerator and such.
This Gran Tourismo is a beautiful example of the Studebaker styling as said sadly not sold in numbers enough to pull Studebaker out of insolvency.
Thanks Scotty K and Jake fro the memory of yesteryear, you caught my attention when I saw the listing recommended.

The Hawk restyle for 1962 was an afterthought.
Sherwood Egbert, new president of Studebaker-Packard inherited something of a financial mess when he came on board in early 1961.
He immediately saw the need for a complete redesign of the '61 model line, hoping that it could be ready in time for the '62 model year.
He brought industrial designer Brooks Stevens ("...the seer that made Milwaukee famous..."), known for pulling very frisky rabbits out of very shabby hats) in.
Stevens simplified model offerings, facelifted and revised the Lark line (which had its origins in the 1953-model sedans) extensively and had the new models ready in time for the autumn introduction.
Most importantly, the Lark design and tooling came in under budget.
There was little money or time to redesign the Hawk (Stevens later remarked that the budget for the entire Studebaker redesign was about the same as for a Plymouth door handle), yet he made the Gran Turismo Hawk look entirely new with a new roofline, simplified rear quarter panels, and some carefully styled trim bits (notably those taillights and the stainless band around the grille tombstone).
There was no money in the budget to revise the rear deck stamping (a complicated panel with narrow horizontal ribs). Stevens' solution was the simple stamped stainless steel panel, textured and painted to echo the tombstone grille mesh. Brilliant, beautiful, and it looked expansive but actually saved money.
The '63 Hawks got a face-lifted grille and front trim, along with a revised stainless panel for the deck lid.
In '64, Stevens managed a complete reskin of the bread-and-butter Lark-type models (now called Challenger, Commander, Cruiser, Daytona, and Wagonaire), and finally had enough budget to smooth the deck lid for the limited final run of Gran Turismo Hawks.
