    Life too short for long TH-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
    In this episode we follow up from our recent adventures in vintage-style fuzzes… with some slightly more modern excursions around the fantabulous fields of fuzz.
    Now clearly this is a product sector absolutely awash with wacky, weird and wonderful devices from a plethora of makers, be they individuals or multinational corporations. So how on Earth do you just pick five? Well, you just pick five, get on with it and wait for the deluge of comments from people wishing you’d chosen something different. If that sounds like you, consider this as Part 1 with more to follow in time, based on your helpful suggestions.
    For everybody else, we hope this provides a little context to some of the other options out there to a strictly vintage-style fuzz and encourages you down the path of the seismic square wave. Swathe yourself amid blankets of woolly warmth, or perhaps splutter forth with grainy, gated aggression. Who doesn’t love a bit of the ol’ fuzzy goodness, eh?
    Enjoy the video…

    Speaking from personal experience, the Velvet Fuzz into the Mick side of the D&M Drive is a wonder to hear. You guys have helped me tame my pedalboard in a big way, and encouraged me to pick up pedals I’d ordinarily steer well clear of (such as fuzz and chorus) to the point where they are now integral assets as part of my playing. I’m pretty sure that’s the very definition of inspiring. Keep it coming!

      Agree on Chorus. Have you heard the Maxon Ambient Stereo Chorus? Jeepers. What a beauty.

    • @KozmykJ
      @KozmykJ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love a bit of subtle chorus, stereo always helps. Gives that Wide sound. For a nice rich chorus I prefer analogue to digital, though digi can be nice too. My #1 chorus is the Arion SCH-1 from way back (the SCH-Z is very similar)

    Hey guys! Great video! I recently got my first fuzz pedal after trying nearly every fuzz at my local music store. I ended up falling in love with the Velvet Fuzz. It just spoke to me in ways that others didn’t, and I literally couldn’t get a bad sound out of it. I’m really pleased to see you guys giving it the love it deserves!!

    I used a fuzz probe for years. The trick is to tune it to the key that you are playing in so when its just making crazy noise its in the the right key. You also want to start the base tone low so when you step on it it doesn't destroy everyone in the room.

    This was an awesome episode! Loved Mick’s playing thru the Fuzz Factory 7 while Dan messed with the stab control, that thing gets wild. Also really liked the MKIV. The velvet fuzz seems like a very usable fuzz tone, a lot tamer but definitely still a fuzz.

    You guys have inspired me so I recently bought my first fuzz pedal after having played the guitar for nearly 20 years! I just never really liked that sound and always opted for a more distorted/overdriven gain sound as I love all kinds of music but especially heavier stuff. But recently I’ve been listening to more Doom and sludgy/stoner heavy stuff and the fuzz is all over those styles! So I went down to my local store and grabbed a Jupiter by Walrus audio and I have to say I LOVE IT!!! Can’t believe I never did it sooner thanks guys!

    Not a dullard amongst the pedals today, every single one uniquely different in function and tone. ZVEX is a company that despite how much I like fuzz does stuff that is so a) awesome and b) beyond my capabilities to make musical, but everyone who can and does deserve respect for making it look easy.
    I'm hoping for an octave fuzz show soon that looks at the various types of octave fuzz. As great as the Octavia is, it is most certainly not the only game in town and would be nice to see the progression of that type of effect.

    Today was the first day, in 12 years of owning a FuzzFactory, that i have ever played my FF and thought, "i should try to turn that knob that way to get more of that sound" and actually had it do something that sounded like i wanted it to. then coming home and watching mick messing with the knobs on the fuzz probe, having watched the entirety of his FuzzFactory experience ( but with two more knobs, cause, you know, the 5 knob was too simple...) was very satisfying.

Would be great to get your take or pedals that were once loved or often overlooked for things like Klon’s and TS, Hall of Fames, etc. I have a BOSS OS-2 that I used to love, now it sits and collects dust - I pulled it out the other day and was actually blown away by its versatility. Would love to see a series like that. Rock on!

    That was great fun to watch-amazing, crazy sounds! You must check out the Basic Audio stuff-probably the widest range of fuzz anywhere. Cheers!

    You should definitely try Devi Ever and Death By Audio fuzzes. Catalinbread guys also do some cool insane fuzz like the Antichthon and the Perseus. I had the Teaser Stallion for years, is one of the first oscillating distortions ever made (2003-2004, I guess), like a ProCo Rat, but with a footswitchable killer oscillation.

      Velvet Fuzz is the first fuzz I've owned, not to mention, the first I've used. I love it, but have NOTHING to compare it to yet. I've always been curious about everything that Catalinbread makes. What have you heard that could lean towards this REALLY BROKEN sound?

    • @ethanmobley
      @ethanmobley 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Shanley It's not from Catalinbread, but check out the TPS videos with the Hudson Broadcast that Mick mentioned in this video. It does the spitting, broken sound in a really cool way.

    • @gfgf9300
      @gfgf9300 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Devi Ever and Death By Audio are the best choices if you're looking for a really "broken sound". They make pretty weird and experimental pedals, like delays and reverbs with fuzz option, etc. But those pedals can even be useful in more conventional music (Nels Cline of Wilco uses a lot of Devi Ever and Z-Vex pedals). Catalinbread stuff is also great, they don't do the Teaser Stallion anymore, but they still make a lot of cool fuzzes like the Perseus (low octave "velcro" fuzz) and the Antichthon (an insane fuzz with trem-like oscillations). Also the Karma Suture is an amazing fuzz inspired by the Harmonic Percolator (used by Steve Albini). Catalinbread stuff is not "fucked up" like DE and DBA, they're very versatile, but you can make them sound crazy if you need.

    +That Pedal Show Well done! I like the long sustain of a fuzz for lead tones. The Wampler Velvet Fuzz is great for that. As you said, it's easy to stack with other pedals. On my board it sounds better with an OD before it than after it.
    Keep it up guys. Love your show, just became a patron today.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Overdrive after fuzz is always a bit of a challenge because of the extra buffer - you can get a very bright/present top end that way, which can be a good or a bad thing depending on you application. Thank you kindly for become a Patron - makes a big difference to our capacity to do stuff. Cheers!

    I own a FF7. Yes, the Zvex fuzz can make those crazy sounds and more. But they are also really versatile regarding sane sounding fuzz sounds and I think you could have shown more of this aspect of the pedal. It sounds great into a flanger or phaser too.
    Anyways, love the show keep it up.

      You do get a lot for that especially heavy price tag.If I was choosing a single pedal for an entire Drive - Fuzz section, that would likely be it.For a long time, I used the Fat Fuzz Factory exclusively. Great cleans with the volume rolled down.

    Fuzz fun!!!!!!!!!!!!
    I’m definitely in the older style fuzz face camp, but definitely had forays into some unusual pedals.
    Maybe try the:
    1). Shift Line Termo Fuzz
    2). Function(fx) Clusterfuzz
    Both sound unbelievably great, and are a weekends worth of fun each (at least)!!!!!!!!!
    Cheers!!!!!

    After decades of avoiding fuzz I've struggled over the last couple of years to find a fuzz I could live with. I started with a couple of the Dunlop units, but was unsatisfied. Continued my search with an EQD unit, and liked many of the sounds but the inherent unpredictability drive me nuts. I've settled in the JRAD WTF, for now. Thank you for the information on some units I'd not yet considered.

    Of course this statement is made in early January which makes it a Resolution.. and we all know what happens to New Year's Resolutions don't we boys and girls?
    Ya gotta love That Pedal Show though. Not only do they bring us the innovations in guitar paraphernalia wizardry but they give us insight into the old standard stuff. I've learned stuff about old pedals that I've previously disliked or taken for granted and now I'm using them in ways I'd not imagined before.

    Pretty sure I suggested this video idea a while back, and I still think it would make for a very interesting one: A video going through the catalog of the current different fender combo amps showing their differences and similarities and how each of them take pedals.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We would like to do this. Maybe not all of them, but the key touch point. Fender are good people, no doubt they will help us out with the amps we don’t have. Hmmmm. I really want a Bassman as it goes. Mick here. Hmmmmmmmmmmm
