  • The sitcom Night Court ran from 1985 to 1992, and even earned a reboot that's coming in 2022. But a lot has changed since the original cast was on the air. Let's take a look at the Night Court cast then and now to see how they've changed through the years.
    00:00 - Intro
0:19 - Selma Diamond as Selma Hacker
1:24 - Florence Halop as Florance "Flo" Kleine
2:29 - John Astin as Buddy Ryan
3:36 - Paula Kelly as Liz Williams
4:42 - Ellen Foley as Billie Young
5:43 - Markie Post as Christine Sullivan
6:50 - Marsha Warfield as Rosalind "Roz" Russell
7:55 - Karen Austin as Lana Wagner
9:00 - Charles Robinson as Macintosh "Mac" Robinson
10:07 - Richard Moll as Nostradamus "Bull" Shannon
11:11 - John Larroquete as Reinhold Daniel Fielding Elmore
12:16 - Harry Anderson as Judge Harold "Harry" T. Stone
Honorable Judge Harry T. Stone is a young, hip, jeans-wearing liberal eccentric presiding over the night shift of a Manhattan courtroom -- which means his views on various cases aren't always normal, nor are his judgments. Helping him manage the chaos is not-so-bright yet softhearted courtroom guard Bull and egotistical prosecutor Dan Fielding. Also part of Stone's crew are passionate public defender Christine Sullivan and calm court clerk Mac, who joined the show in its third and second seasons, respectively.
Show featured over five cast changes within the first year. Six female leads were featured before Markie Post was settled on. Post was the producers original choice in season two, but could not get out of her The Fall Guy (1981) contract. Gail Strickland played the public defender in the pilot episode before being replaced by Paula Kelly, who was then replaced in season two by Ellen Foley before Post joined in season three. Two court clerks were featured, first Karen Austin, then Charles Robinson. Three bailiff changes were Selma Diamond, who died after the show's second season, Florence Halop, who died the following year, then Marsha Warfield, who remained until the show's finish. The only cast members to remain from the pilot until the finale were Harry Anderson, John Larroquette, and Richard Moll.
After Selma Diamond passed away following the completion of Season 2, she was replaced by Florence Halop, due largely to the fact that she had comedy timing and mannerisms similar to Selma. However, when Florence passed away after completing just one season (Season 3), it was decided by the producers to hire a younger actress for the role, and Marsha Warfield was hired as Roz.
The series was originally set to debut at the start of the 1983-84 season. NBC, concerned about Harry Anderson's lack of acting experience, decided to delay the show. NBC ended up cancelling every new series that premiered that September, and the show was picked up as a mid-season replacement.
John Larroquette was approached during Season 6 about starring in Madhouse (1990). However, executive producer Reinhold Weege would not allow him the time off to make the film. Because of delays in the film, Larroquette was approached again during Season 7. This time Weege and the film's producers worked out a schedule that would allow Larroquette to work on both projects simultaneously. Mondays to Thursdays Larroquette would rehearse for the series during the day and work on the film all night. On Friday nights the series would tape its episodes. As soon as taping finished, he would go to the film's set and work all weekend.
Over the shows 9 seasons four different actresses played the public defender role. Gail Strickland played Sheila Gardiner in the pilot only in 1984. For the rest of the first season Paula Kelly played Liz Williams. Kelly earned an Emmy nomination for best supporting actress for the 1983-84 season for her work but it was never made publicly clear as to why she was let go from the series after season one. Starting with season two producers wanted Markie Post in the role and even had her on as a guest star as Christine Sullivan in the the second episode of season two. Post was unable to get out of contract with the series The Fall Guy and thus producers hired Ellen Foley to play Billie Young during the 1984-85 season. As season three began in 1985, Post become available and thus she replaced Foley playing Christine Sullivan from 1985 to 1992, the duration of the series.

I met Markie Post some twenty years ago. Long story, but we had to talk for a little while. She had just arrived back in the U. S. from overseas on a long airplane flight. As I recall, she had been travelling with her two grade school aged children. She was exhausted and not with stage make up. Probably not a fresh face in any form. She was the nicest person anyone could wish and she looked as good as she did on television.

In the new updated version John Larroquette reprises his role, it would be great if Marcia Warfield and Richard Moll get to reprise their roles as well, or were they asked to appear, or did each one decline the offer. Marcia I know is doing nightclub appearances, not sure what Richard is up to. But between the two they made the show work . Harry Anderson R.I.P and the rest of the cast that is longer with us.
