  • When we talk about 6G pipe welding, we are talking about welding two pieces of pipe (of any size or material) together in a fixed 45 degree angle. Being able to weld in the 6G position will qualify you to weld in any other position. It will not, however qualify you to weld any material in that position. In this video, we are going to show you how to weld 6 inch Carbon Steel Pipe in the 6G position to help you pass a test or get a job.

    My instructors keep telling me that I need more build up on the inside of the pipe for my root pass. But none of them can actually show me how to do it themselves.

    Oh man, this reminds me for my 6g exam! 45° 60mm pipe 3mm thickness and the top highness of thah pipe was same level as my eyes. You can't use wall to lean on or some other support. There are just that pipe, your shaking hands and three people watching your agony :) But I did it.... almost perfect.
    Love your videos, because no matter what experience I have, every time I learn something new and interesting.... which makes me better TIGer ;)

    This is a personal preference. I personally feel more comfortable looking through the inside of the pipe at a slight angle so I can see the wire and the inside of the weld pool on bottom. I have also looked at it from the outside while on bottom as well but it seems to take a longer to complete the weld.

  • @Welddotcom
    @Welddotcom  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That is correct. Move up on the bevel and lengthen the arc to decrease amperage and snap out of it. Since you are using a manual torch you may post shield with argon.

    We get anything from generic to ESAB / Lincoln filler wires. What’s important is the GRADE for filler wire. We mostly use ER70S-6 for our carbon steel pipe welding with GTAW.

      The angle of that pipe is still considered to 6g position?

  • @Welddotcom
    @Welddotcom  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lead angle on any open root pass regardless of position may vary. 0-15 is usually for structural fillet joints. I have not had much luck with a 0 - 15 degree angle getting the open root pass to progress (flow) upward. Try using the 25 - 45 lead angle and keep the wire on the leading edge of the pool for complete fusion and reinforcement.

    There is no need to purge carbon steel pipe or plate. Simply clean the material about ¾ to 1 inch away from the root on both sides.

    that is wonderful sir one has to dip in the filler wire in write in the groove for sufficient penetration and also mind your preparation and and settings depending on the thickness of the filler wire and the thickness of the pipe.

    I sure would like to thank you for the informative video. I've been a welder for over 20 years and I can't seem to pass the 6G carbon test. I'm AWS 6G certified, (I paid for that waste of money) but when I go to take the test my root is ok but my hot pass and stick cover suck! I have my own 200 amp tig rig, I'm now going to get a DC power source that has finite controls. Practice, practice, practice. I know I can do it and I'm sure by watching a few more of your videos. Thanks again, keep it up!

    BOB is the REAL “Mr. TIG”. Bob is a real bad ass old timer. Everything he says makes sense and has wisdom, no bullshit. He actually HELPS for cert. prep and practice. This other white haired pretender is a baby sitter. He is an insult to most people’s intelligence. A bullshitter. Its almost like there’s a bunch of five-year-olds watching and he tries to interpret actual welding stuff; or for people who have no capacity for welding, people who never actually going to get in the industry or have zero intention of actually getting a welding CERT. (he talks like he’s teaching ABC’s to people that can’t speak yet.). Other people must feel the same; never see that white haired baby feeder anymore. The new weld.com videos are bad ass! Thanks Bob!

    Enjoyed the vid. Tig weld up the left, left handed and up the right, right handed as normal. But! I’d never walk the cup on a root, it’s a good demo but I’d never teach it. I’m used to putting roots in that look like a ‘wedding ring’. Walking the cup n dipping the wire, it looks a bit flat or sometimes under. Btw your gap is huge! Takes longer to weld plus more material, I find it bizarre you feel the need to feed the wire through the butt on a easy accessible butt like that. Anyway every welder is different, happy welding

  • @TexasLeverGunner
    @TexasLeverGunner 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    A lot of places still blind both ends of the pipe off. I guess it just depends on how critical the job is that they are hiring you for.

  • @Joy-wl1yk
    @Joy-wl1yk 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    In a perfect world, 100% penetration welded from both side is accessible only if the pipe is that large and you have that much room to weld the inside. An EB ring or metal backing would do just fine for a 6G. Welded from one side, you have to worry about suck back or concavity.

    • @lascoob970
      @lascoob970 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joy Grady-Hilton you cant put a backing ring in ASME IV bahahah. your nuts. its nuclear, petrochemcial code. 100 percent x ray. severe cycle... chemicals like chlorine running through it. pipes operating at 1000F plus.. and 400PSI...

    • @Joy-wl1yk
      @Joy-wl1yk 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just because the ASME code doesn't allow it, doesn't mean the other codes don't. There is more than one welding code lascoob. I've dealt with catapult accumulators with a lousy cap pass that cracked down the middle. 1000F is nothing to launching a jet off a carrier. We fixed 14 8" SS joints with a backing ring. Worked just fine.

    • @lascoob970
      @lascoob970 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have also worked on fuel gas lines for jet engines. Inconel 25-35
      Falls under asme IV or the companion military code.
      No backing ring. And a backing ring will disrupt flow and cause stress on the toes of pipe.

    • @Joy-wl1yk
      @Joy-wl1yk 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can have a backing ring without disrupting the flow IF it is manufactured with interior bevels. Surface Ship's have a specific requirement for that to use in different fuel flow systems. I've worked with Titanium 10S on sea chest and condensers..different scenario where we welded open butt with a purge.

    Is it a custom to weld the bottom end or 6-o-clock by looking at it from the top. or do you move your head to look at it from the bottom?

    even when you are testing! why work hard when ya can work smart! lay wire in from the backside when ya can do it, that too me is just smart money . ensure's a good root pass! i'd hate too do a joint and then go backwards to the root with a grinder cuz i flubbed a root!

      When you are use to pushing the rod in, you know what the other side is gonna look like and it keeps you in practice. Heat on outside = weld on out site, heat on inside = weld on inside

      Billy Tabor filler rod on back side of bevel = good bead and full penetration . filler rod infront of bevel or fed flat on bevel = shop welder.... bah
