    My instructors keep telling me that I need more build up on the inside of the pipe for my root pass. But none of them can actually show me how to do it themselves.

    Oh man, this reminds me for my 6g exam! 45° 60mm pipe 3mm thickness and the top highness of thah pipe was same level as my eyes. You can't use wall to lean on or some other support. There are just that pipe, your shaking hands and three people watching your agony :) But I did it.... almost perfect.
    Love your videos, because no matter what experience I have, every time I learn something new and interesting.... which makes me better TIGer ;)

    This is a personal preference. I personally feel more comfortable looking through the inside of the pipe at a slight angle so I can see the wire and the inside of the weld pool on bottom. I have also looked at it from the outside while on bottom as well but it seems to take a longer to complete the weld.

    That is correct. Move up on the bevel and lengthen the arc to decrease amperage and snap out of it. Since you are using a manual torch you may post shield with argon.

    Lead angle on any open root pass regardless of position may vary. 0-15 is usually for structural fillet joints. I have not had much luck with a 0 - 15 degree angle getting the open root pass to progress (flow) upward. Try using the 25 - 45 lead angle and keep the wire on the leading edge of the pool for complete fusion and reinforcement.

    We get anything from generic to ESAB / Lincoln filler wires. What’s important is the GRADE for filler wire. We mostly use ER70S-6 for our carbon steel pipe welding with GTAW.

    I thought that as well.Never seen it, much less tried it. The 6GR seems to lend itself to a small mirror. I tried the mirror and it looked like I was a novice. Practice, practice, practice they say. Good luck and best wishes.

    There is no need to purge carbon steel pipe or plate. Simply clean the material about ¾ to 1 inch away from the root on both sides.

    I sure would like to thank you for the informative video. I've been a welder for over 20 years and I can't seem to pass the 6G carbon test. I'm AWS 6G certified, (I paid for that waste of money) but when I go to take the test my root is ok but my hot pass and stick cover suck! I have my own 200 amp tig rig, I'm now going to get a DC power source that has finite controls. Practice, practice, practice. I know I can do it and I'm sure by watching a few more of your videos. Thanks again, keep it up!

    that is wonderful sir one has to dip in the filler wire in write in the groove for sufficient penetration and also mind your preparation and and settings depending on the thickness of the filler wire and the thickness of the pipe.

    BOB is the REAL “Mr. TIG”. Bob is a real bad ass old timer. Everything he says makes sense and has wisdom, no bullshit. He actually HELPS for cert. prep and practice. This other white haired pretender is a baby sitter. He is an insult to most people’s intelligence. A bullshitter. Its almost like there’s a bunch of five-year-olds watching and he tries to interpret actual welding stuff; or for people who have no capacity for welding, people who never actually going to get in the industry or have zero intention of actually getting a welding CERT. (he talks like he’s teaching ABC’s to people that can’t speak yet.). Other people must feel the same; never see that white haired baby feeder anymore. The new weld.com videos are bad ass! Thanks Bob!

    The way you have the pipe setup, although in the correct position, as regards 6G, you wont find in practice, many test facilities in which you are able to clamp on top, all have anchor point bottom, ask any UA welder.

  • @Joy-wl1yk
    @Joy-wl1yk 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    In a perfect world, 100% penetration welded from both side is accessible only if the pipe is that large and you have that much room to weld the inside. An EB ring or metal backing would do just fine for a 6G. Welded from one side, you have to worry about suck back or concavity.

    • @lascoob970
      @lascoob970 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joy Grady-Hilton you cant put a backing ring in ASME IV bahahah. your nuts. its nuclear, petrochemcial code. 100 percent x ray. severe cycle... chemicals like chlorine running through it. pipes operating at 1000F plus.. and 400PSI...

    • @Joy-wl1yk
      @Joy-wl1yk 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just because the ASME code doesn't allow it, doesn't mean the other codes don't. There is more than one welding code lascoob. I've dealt with catapult accumulators with a lousy cap pass that cracked down the middle. 1000F is nothing to launching a jet off a carrier. We fixed 14 8" SS joints with a backing ring. Worked just fine.

    • @lascoob970
      @lascoob970 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have also worked on fuel gas lines for jet engines. Inconel 25-35
      Falls under asme IV or the companion military code.
      No backing ring. And a backing ring will disrupt flow and cause stress on the toes of pipe.

    • @Joy-wl1yk
      @Joy-wl1yk 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can have a backing ring without disrupting the flow IF it is manufactured with interior bevels. Surface Ship's have a specific requirement for that to use in different fuel flow systems. I've worked with Titanium 10S on sea chest and condensers..different scenario where we welded open butt with a purge.

      bkpickell depends on who wrote it. In the nukes our top is 150amps according to WPS.

    I have a question. What good is it to have a big gap like in this video vs having a tighter gap. Also is it better to have a landing on the bevel??. Thank you Mr tig

    • @Welddotcom
      @Welddotcom  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As explained in the beginning of the video, everybody has a preference of fit-up. I like to use the wide gap and root face to draw reinforcement to the inside of the pipe and weld faster. The much slower method would be feathered edges and a key-hole approach which I find harder to make a consistent bead with. The key-hole I usually do on stainless and nickel based allows. Feeding the wire from the outside of a bevel on the bottom of a pipe weld has never been fun for me if I want good reinforcement.
      Again, there are many options and variables to produce this weld. What are the end results / code specs? What does the procedure call for? These may determine or stipulate how it is to be welded.

    • @lascoob970
      @lascoob970 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      KRS 1 no you can walk the cup to.... but keyhole a pipe is stupid. alot of time you have to feed the bead looking through the top of the gap. key holing will screw you in a pipe rack or heater... you simply can't do it. got to feed the wire through the gap . most pipe welding in the feild is done in extremely tight spots.

      Experiment bud, it's all in trial and error and personal preference. I always like 3/32 root with a knifes edge. Running at 120 for root and 140-150 max for my hot and filler passes. As goes for SMAW, 3/32 root and land. Running at dead 90 (depending on the machine so give or take +3, -3) hot pass 120-130 (depending if I'm running up hand or down hand). And for fill and cap I'll run between 115-125. But that being said those are MY personal preferences. Best of luck!

      HoboWelds13 you like 3/32 gap with knife edge then you must be using 3/32 rod too, right? are you putting in the root while leaning the rod in the gap and walking the cup over it or freehanding it while you lean the rod in the groove?

      luvkountry just weld man. none of that matters in the feild
      it will be -30 out.. snowing. 30 mile an hour winds.. your 150ft in the air. the fit is so fucked up.. 1/2 gaps... 1inch gaps... 1/4" high low in the fit up... you been working 7/12s for 8 months. you just have to do trial and error. thats the only way to learn how to weld. and walk through alot of shame, failing... in the feild you don't have foot pedals. or time to be messing with different cups.. you have to rely on your technique.. not different parts or technology. Technique will get you further then anything. you can do the same with a 12 cup as an 8 cup... as long as you have the skill

    A lot of places still blind both ends of the pipe off. I guess it just depends on how critical the job is that they are hiring you for.

    Is there a standard dimension(s) of pipe or is it per tester?

    • @johnh2018
      @johnh2018 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It all depends who you are testing for. Ingels who is a ship building company tests on 5in schedule 40, NBS (National Boiler Sevices) tests on 2in heavy wall tube that must be tacked in a simulated fixture. Some pipeline companies will test between 6in and 24in piping. I hope this helps alittle.

    What is the brand or the filler rod used?

  • @TheSillyslik40
    @TheSillyslik40 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    even when you are testing! why work hard when ya can work smart! lay wire in from the backside when ya can do it, that too me is just smart money . ensure's a good root pass! i'd hate too do a joint and then go backwards to the root with a grinder cuz i flubbed a root!

      @bbtjtabor 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you are use to pushing the rod in, you know what the other side is gonna look like and it keeps you in practice. Heat on outside = weld on out site, heat on inside = weld on inside

      Billy Tabor filler rod on back side of bevel = good bead and full penetration . filler rod infront of bevel or fed flat on bevel = shop welder.... bah
