Tomas Gutierrez-Alea copied the intro and experimental style of Nicolas Guillen Landrian's film Los del Baile (1964). Guillen Landrian's films were censored after 1965 and most people including Frances Ford Coppola never realized Gutierrez-Alea was not capable of furthering experimental cinema in Cuba because he wasn't familiar with it. He simply adapted it for Memories of Underdevelopment. Watch all of Guillen Landrian's film and you will see his work was truly revolutionary Cuban cinema.

This film is a rip off of La Dolce Vita, no?
