This is actually so beautiful, my mom treated my adoption the same. Even tho we were the same race and she could have lied or withheld that info, she always made it my knowledge since I was an infant. About how I was such a gift that someone would have me and give me to her, how much love was involved, how much she loves me and how much my birth mom loved me to give me a life with her... never secretive about where I can from either 🥰 growing up I never understood the “you’re adopted secret” from tv and movies because I couldn’t imagine that being something shameful to share with the child

I can understand where an adoption might be kept secret from the child if the adoption is being done to hide something which the family finds shameful (e.g., that's not your sister; that's your mother). However, I don't think it's the best thing for any child to be told a lie.

@@alexjayne_ I can't remember all the names, although I kept them. One favorite was Horace, about a leopard adopted by a tiger family. I particularly liked it because it wasn't the typical white parents, they were just different. I feel like the variety of stories gave you different views and pieces for her to use in her own story.

I’m loving these adoption videos! I was adopted from Vietnam when I was 2 and I can relate to forgetting I’m not white. 😂 I was raised in a small predominately white community and was the only Asian in my high school. So when someone asked me where I’m from I always say “Texas” and then realize they meant what country I’m from. 😂😅

You weren't wrong though 😉 this reminded me of something. I'm Norwegian, and we had a commercial a few years ago (for a telecom company - the ad was about communication) with a black man as a taxi driver and the white "typical Norwegian" passenger was trying to make small talk, and asked him "So.. Where are you from?" (As in what country), and he answered in the thickest northener accent "Æ e fra Harstad. Einn du? 😁" (I'm from Harstad. You?). Enter awkward silence 😜

I grew up knowing that I was adopted because I have a little sister and my adoptiv mom wanted me to have contact with her. Didn't change anything for me, my feelings or the knowing that the family I grew up with is my family. My mom is my mom, I'm 31 and when I'm sick I still cry for my mommy😅 although I have a pretty bad/ non existing relationship with my biological mother because of the things that happend between her and my sister, my sister and I have a good friendship like relationship.

Aww, we have a book too but it’s more of a picture book for young kids and my family mainly reinforced it into me by celebrating our gotcha day annually. I also know many (if not all) of my China sisters also see themselves as white/the same as everyone else. Almost all of their families have kept them very tied down to American culture and hardly any Chinese (except me obviously lol) but I guess I’m lucky since my family always tried to have me learn about my culture since it’s where I’m from and makes up my literal dna. When I was little, I also saw myself as the same/white (and often also forgot I’m Chinese too) but as time went on I kind of learned to see my differences as more uniqueness and wanted to embrace my Chinese-ness more-now I consider it a huge part of me. My school also offers Chinese as a language and I absolutely love that there’s finally someone who actually looks like me, she has probably had some similar “struggles” living in such a white-populated area and I have someone to look up to/be my role model.

I have an adopted brother, and what I’m asking myself is whether we need to have a “your father is adopted” conversation with his son. My family hasn’t really thought too much about it, but I wonder if it’s going to be a shock to my nephew to find out 😅

    • @erinnmcnew9080

I found out when I was 14 that my dad was adopted by his dad (my grandmother remarried, and her new husband adopted my dad), and wow was it a shock!! I was even named after my grandpa (which I'm so happy about because I loved him so so much), the deception wasn't intentional - it had just happened so long ago that nobody really brought it up. So like...yeah, definitely recommend making sure that your brother remembers to tell his son, haha!

I can relate on not feeling Asian. I was born in US. Bio parents are Chinese and only spoke Chinese.
I went back and forth countries, until I settled down in US around 13. My siblings remained Chinese culture where as I ‘chose’ western culture and lifestyle.
Yet somehow when I am with Americans, I feel like an outcast but I’m really just more like them than my own people. You’re judged based on just your skin.
When I’m with Chinese people, I feel like an American cause I prefer my new found culture vs what I was given.
You don’t really fit in anywhere it feels like. But good thing I live in LA where it’s more diverse.

When you have something different you have to do some explanation sometimes.
I wasn't adopted but I have 3 citizenship. We were supposed to live in Italy so my Italian father named me with his dead beloved brother name. Then my French mother missed her country so we went in France. From my name people assume I'm Italian (it's true) but they also assume I'm not french. French also love to dis England, the country where I was born... So I usually mention that I'm also a Brit.
I never had any identity crisis. Ever consider myself as 100% citizen of each of my countries.
I lived in all my countries and a few others, I met some ignorant people but nothing that couldn't be remedied with some explanation...

I think if somebody grew up in a country for their entire life that person is from that country, doesn't matter where that person was actually born.
Its must be very weird for her to be realted to a country that she never experienced just because she was born there, in a place she doesn't even remember!
I think your country is wherever you lived.
If I see somebody who looks african or indian from anywhere, but they say they are from lets say England, I never ask more because I assume that person grew up there or simply comes from immigrant parents, but that person absorved the culture of the place she or he lived in, so that person is from that place!
I think soon diferent ethnic groups wont be related anymore to diferent countries because it will all get mixed up.
Must be tiring for adopted people or people with immigrant parents to get asked where are they actually from, in my country thats kind of rude to ask.
She and her mom and sooo adorable, motherhood is definetly not about genetics but about love!
