    History is littered with the husks of genius, un-credited, giving of themselves for free... don't worry Richard, you don't need to ask for recognition. You are our hero!

    I've been using the OS for almost 5 years and never bothered to find out the meaning of the term GNU/Linux that I saw many times. Now that I know, I feel a little sorry for Mr. Stallman. he has every right to be bitter about it.

    Ever since I found out that Linux is a kernel and GNU is a project for developing utility software and much more. That's what I call GNU/Linux ever since.
    Richard sir is the real deserving of the modern era.

    "Arch Linux" is a distribution of GNU/Linux.
    The developers of a distro can call their distro whatever, in this case "Arch Linux" or "Arch", but it is a distribution of GNU/Linux.

    So, i will now begin to say "GNU/Microsoft/IBM/...../Linux" to give everyone credit who has taken part in the today's development of the Linux OSes that we use... :) - Proudly using Ubuntu and calling it "Linux" :) - it's a work of thousands, not only of GNU.

    • @CalistoLP
      @CalistoLP 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Free and OpenSource might live together - different from what Mr. Stallman thinks. I use GIMP and still use a mostly OpenSource based "cluster" of apps. I even use - what Mr. Stallman really HATES - proprietary products. Such as some device drivers... I mean... who the hell cares? :D

    • @CalistoLP
      @CalistoLP 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Theoretically even Windows and OS X should be called GNU/* then - cause Windows also supports the gcc compiler. And glibc. So, welcome to the world of GNU/Windows, GNU/OSX, GNU/Linux, GNU/FreeBSD, GNU/Solaris, ... :D

    • @CalistoLP
      @CalistoLP 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, there are tons of other compilers which you can use for Linux. And just because of a compiler calling it "my operating system" (GNU/Linux ==> Stallmans System??) - thats like writing a text editor with my project Pyex and saying everybody must say Pyex/Linux ;)
      And glibc is used for a lot of Windows software today. Nearly any opensource software uses glibc - on Windows, Linux, BSD. And Stallman also doesn't say GNU/BSD or GNU/FreeBSD, GNU/NetBSD etc.

    • @CalistoLP
      @CalistoLP 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      He want's the credit for ALL development on the Linux kernel - he alone. But this one man has not written the Linux kernel. He didn't even participate.

    • @CalistoLP
      @CalistoLP 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, but there are thousands of other contributing projects - in between, many of those do have the same percentage of work in the Linux kernel as the GNU project... So i think, it's not bad if someone says "Linux" instead of "GNU/Linux"... Microsoft also doesn't say "say SONY Microsoft/PC" or something like that. Thousands of people are not directly given credit. Fairness is what i want, nothing else. If not Microsoft is given credit for the drivers (opensource drivers! :O) they created for Linux (e.g. HyperV-support, some Samba-enhancements), GNU shouldn't be given credit either.

  • @BeansEnjoyer911
    @BeansEnjoyer911 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I don’t think it’s not giving people credit
    It’s just so much easier to just say Linux and anyone with the knowledge of the system knows it’s GNU/Linux.
    In a similar vain, I don’t say “Microsoft Windows” every single time, as it’s easy enough to just interpret “Windows” as the same thing.

    • @LinuxIsNotAnOperatingSystem

    • @zainjadoon759
      @zainjadoon759 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no, without gnu you can not use Linux. You can not boot it because it is just a kernel and nothing works without gnu. gnu is the operating system so gnu is first and linux is the kernel. If anything people should call it gnu because 2 percent of gnu/Linux is actually the kernel(linux).

    • @DarkLotusInc
      @DarkLotusInc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the same argument can be used to call it just Linux cuz without kernel no gnu apps can run. Are you sure the kernel is the 2%? I mean that can be true in a system full with bloatware. And almost imposble than the rest 98% is from the gnu project

      I can be wrong, but I always thought the point of this naming scheme is to mean GNU runs "over" Linux. Just like with 3/4 means 3 is over (as in: on top of) 4, GNU/Linux means GNU runs on top of the Linux kernel, and GNU/Hurd means GNU is running over the HURD kernel, or GNU/kFreeBSD, and etc.

      Was saying the same thing. Its not comfortable for people to say GNU + Linux and they need to come together and create a name they both comfortable with, However its more about recognition than it is, trying to solve this. Nothing will ever change and hence why they never tried to ever solve it. One wants to be bigger than the other.

      @@shallex5744 People call it simply Linux because they don't care about the GNU part of it. I deliberately call it GNU because I don't care about the Linux part of it. The GNU Project, the FSF, and RMS were the major responsible for the Free Software movement, the Free Culture way of thinking, the idea for wikipedia, Creative Commons, and so many more great things we have today that make our society more free, and they don't get proper credit for it. All of that got buried by Linux and "Open Source". That's why I chose to call the system by GNU. That's my protest.
