So, How do I Ship This 1,018 # Wagon Wheel? | An A-Frame House | Engels Coach Shop

  • Crating a thousand pound wagon wheel for truck shipping is definitely a challenging venture. For reasons I explain, I decided to ship this wheel vertical instead of horizontal. So I need to create a crate that will maintain its vertical integrity, and protect it while being transferred by multiple forklift drivers as it travels across the country from Montana to Virginia. This is designing and building as I go, with no real beginning plans, but knowing it has to survive rough handling.

Sir, just last week visited the Borax mine in Boron Ca. They have a wagon train set up with fiberglass mules. On display. Theirs has a different under carriage set up than the ones you made ? Also the water wagon has a tow bumper horn to pull another wagon behind it. Also did not know just how much play (back and forth) between wagons, now know why called horn and bumper. I asked if they know about you building wagons? They said yes and were proud you did the work. And to keep the train alive. The reason I went was to see if they still had photos of me, seeding the slopes around the visitor center in 1998. When asked about them, the man said yes, they did and they still talk about me. See I would run side ways on the slopes driving an old, two wheel drive John Dear tractor and a quad runner to seed the slopes. The slopes were very steep and I was on edge of tipping over. The guys in the mine had a running bet on when I was going to kill myself. The man I talked to said the money was a very large amount. I told them that he could now tell them I was still alive and quite well. One day, while working, stopped by a track hoe placing rip wrap rocks along the road up to the center and asked the man operating it if He would trade places, he said hell no!!! I was the craziest person he ever seen. That I cost him money, as I had not killed myself yet. That's when I first learned about the betting. Too funny.

He became the warehouse mascot for a while until we found a good home for him. We named him Hobo. Another memorable event was someone left their fork truck in a trailer. You'd think the truck driver would notice that when he was closing the doors. I called the shipper and asked if he was missing a fork lift. He said he didn't think so but had someone go quickly check and yup, they were missing a fork truck. Nobody even noticed.

The tire on this beast of a wheel is downright frightening. My dad and father-in-law used to play "Click and Wheel" when they were children growing up in the early 1900s. The wheel was an old, worn out tire from a wagon. I wonder what they'd say today if they were still alive and saw the wheel on this thousand pounder? LOL

Dave, have you ever seen a rendering of what the James Reed Palace Wagon looked like? This was a super sized wagon that was in the Donner party. I expect that it was based on a Borax or freight wagon of that period. According to legend, it had two decks. Because of it's weight it was left in the Great Salt Desert. Supposedly, a man ran across it in the 50's buried out there. It had these gigantic wheels that were 8 inches wide.

One alternative was how a water wheel is mounted onto its frame at the axle point because it's angled legs transferred any side forces to the base like a pyramid. How it's going to be hung/lighted would be an interesting video unto it self since the ceiling/mounts holding strength should be at least 3-4X the wheels weight just for safety. Kudos on another Borax Wheel build and will look forward to knowing what it's twin will be used down the road for because a Unicycle for Paul Bunyan comes to mind :)

Again, marvellous watching someone work. Just glad it is you Dave.
nb. Love the single axle trailers in the States. Here in Australia, they love axles, axles are good. the more the betterer, and would have at least 3 under that bugger. Reckon the rules are made by manufacturers of Axles and Tyres, here.

Beautiful wheels and awesome crating job!!! It must've cost a fortune to ship those! I'm sure the owner will be pleased.

So you turned a circle into a triangle so it would ship in a rectangle.
    Geometry is weird.

More like a hexagon, as opposed to a triangle .... :D But you're right, geometry is weird...

That is certainly something. When the crating gets its very own episode. I think standing it up was a good decision.

Brilliant...the only thing I’d be concerned about is the removal of those nails on those inner supports....you have to help with the uncrating to guarantee no one ruins that piece of art

The better you crate it the more of a challenge for the dock workers.
Everyone’s up for a challenge this time of the year.
I think it’ll get there fine.
