It was a great comedy show. And I remember some terrific bands that were ok. The Beatles played Hey Jude and played Revolution the same night! I was so happy! I saw them in the late 80’s in Vegas. They were terrific performers.
John Entwistle doesn't even look at his bass while he plays it and he played the first bass solo ever in rock music. In this video he actually looked kind of bored while he played the bass. He is legend.
Yeah when that happened it freaked out a lot of suits or squares of the day. The Smothers Brothers actuality had their "variety show" canceled because they spoke out against the Vietnam War. They were warned by the networks to stay at an arms length of "the hippy movement" but the Brothers Smothers 😏 refused and got their careers tanked as well.

As much as I love seeing this it makes me sad that I never got to see Keith Moon live, and will never see John play bass live again. And ya' Mr. Bruv they tore it up like that EVERY show, at least well into the '70's. They were broke for much of the '60's, because they were going through guitars and drums every show. Man they were great!! Long Live Rock I Need it Every Night!!!
Wrecking instruments got costly for the group! And that last explosion, a joke from Keith that gave Pete some temporary deafness. Great reaction as usual man!
Not temporary. It was permanent and has bothered him the rest of his life. For years he couldn't play the electric guitar live because the stage monitor was too painful for his ears and would cause further degradation.
Yep that’s The Who! I remember seeing that show. The Smothers Brothers was a funny show back in the day. The Who was probably on of the loudest if not the loudest concert I ever saw back in the 70’s. Most likely why I’m hard of hearing today!😂
In their early years The Who destroyed their instruments. It became a thing until it got too expensive and people began to expect that they destroy their instruments. This performance is from the Smothers Brothers tv show, probably around 1967 or 68. It looks like it's taken from the documentary, "The kids Are Alright," which I saw many decades ago in the movie theater. The reason why the explosion is so intense is that Kieth Moon, ever the jokester, ordered a stage hand to put double the amount of gunpowder near his drum kit. Surprised the heck out of everyone when it went off.
Promotor. 'You'll be paid for a twenty minute set, any encores, you don't get paid for.' Pete 'We don't play a note for free.' Promotor 'Well you'll have to if you don't want to disappoint your fans.' After the twenty minute set.... Pete 'Sorry, we can't do an encore, our instruments don't seem to be working.'

Keith Moon overloaded that charge without telling anybody. Pete Townsend was genuinely pissed off about it and Tommy Smothers is visibly upset by the outcome.
Is this the explosion that wrecked one of his ears? I read about it, Keith over did his explosion pack, and for real it wrecked Pete's ear. I don't think it was this show though.
The equipment destruction was an integral part of their early stardom. When asked later in their careers, Pete shared that it originally was just to impress girls; but fans then expected it at each performance.
This was on the Smother’s Brothers Show. They were comedians so Tommy was in on the act, deadpan was his thing. Their show was cancelled after they dared to speak out against the Vietnam War. It was a Musical/Variety/Comedy show and a must see back in the day,
In the early years of The Who, which this video is, The Who used to destroy their instruments. Their stage act was insane back in those days. This brings up the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. Jimi Hendrix and The Who were in the lineup that evening. No act wanted to follow Jimi or The Who for that matter. Pete Townshend of The Who insisted on going on stage before Jimi. The Who blew up the stage as usual. Jimi decided he had to do something equally dramatic (he didn't have to but that's another story). So Jimi put lighter fluid on his precious guitar at the close of his act and set it on fire. Video of this exists for you Who and Hendrix fans.
What people seem to forget about is that there was a band between The Who and Hendrix, who were playing WHILE the crew was still cleaning up the stage from The Who’s onslaught: The Grateful Dead. Bob Weir said that he was stepping on chunks of Pete’s guitar during their set!
1994 live in NC Hardees walnut creek stadium ❤❤❤❤ we rock the whole thing and they exited😊 we scream oncore!!! And when lights came up 😮 the whole stagstand was a giant Pinball machine ❤❤❤❤ WOW flashing lights and bells 🤯
The big three of the British Invasion each laid a path for the bands that followed them. The Beatles established pop as we know it today, the Rolling Stones codified rock, and punk wouldn't exist without The Who.
A legendary TV performance, breaking all the rules and sending up the host in the process. The explosive device in Keith's bass drum was less than impressive during the initial rehearsal, so he apparently bribed a stagehand (with a $20 bill, and a nip of whiskey) to *really* load it up. When he set it off, the thing went off like a bomb...it blew the bass drum out completely, Pete caught the full brunt of it (the side of his hair was burned, and his subsequent hearing loss stemmed from this incident), and part of a cymbal sliced its way across Keith's arm (you can see him grab his arm in pain at 5:41). People in the audience has pieces of bass-drum heads on them.
Keith moon one time loaded his drum kit with cherry bombs for a non-television performance when they are destroying their instruments live in the lead vocalist was I believe so close it made him deaf in one ear
That was this show, and it was the big explosion at the end. It wasn't Roger who became deaf, it was Pete, the guitarist. Later on in life for many years he was unable to play the electric guitar live because his stage monitor was too painful for his ears, so he only played the acoustic.
lol you know what's really funny.. the tv show had now clue this was gonna happen... Not even the band knew about the final bomb that Keith Moon sets off. as soon as that final cherry bomb goes off, you can see Pete Townsend (the guitarist) grabbing his ear. That's because he had no clue it would happen and it completely burst his ear drum and damaged the hearing in his left ear for life. Even he had a sense of humor about it though. That was the spirit of the band.
Fun fact: the explosion at 5:42 blew out Pete's eardrum and set his hair on fire for a moment and also propelled a piece of cymbal shrapnel into Keith's arm. You can see him grab his arm right after the explosion goes off.
The stagehands had added a safe amount of powder for the explosion but Moon being the crazy person he was added a lot more powder. No one knew. It damaged Pete's ears and one of them got some cymbal imbedded in his leg.
This was kind of a joke on the Smothers Brothers Show. At Woodstock 1969, Pete Townsend rammed Abby Hoffman in the back of the head with his guitar for stealing his mike and going off politically . Their closing number was "My Generation" and they REALLY destroyed it all at the end.
Hope you explore some of Live At Leeds album to really get their full energy! "Young Man's Blues", "Substitute", "I'm Free", and "We're Not Gonna Take It" are a few choice tracks :)
That destruction thing looks so stupid. Pete Townsend first did it during a performance because he was really pissed about something going wrong with his guitar, and the crowd went wild, and after that they were expected to do the destruction thing. But to me it looks silly being planned like that. Keith Moon is a wild drummer. He really was the best. He was also the biggest party animal in the world, legendary drinking and drug fueled maniac. He managed to die young.
Keith put 3 times the powder in the charge. Pete blamed that incident for his loss of hearing later in life. It also briefly set his hair on fire. And if you look close, one of the cymbals sliced Keith's arm open.
Sooo much going on. Tommy Smothers looked like a button down guy but he was very very progressive. But to these rock stars they had no idea. Pete has no idea there was dynamite in Keith bass drum. Pissed at him forever after that. Unbelievable appearance on a prime time variety show in the mid 1960's.
Don’t be talkin about “my generation!” Talk bad about us and we will tear you to pieces! Tommy Smothers. We all loved the Smothers Brothers back in the day.

As mentioned by another commenter , the Smothers Brothers comedy duo looked square but were important opponents of Nixon's bloody war . A tight knit group of entertainers spoke out and sometimes gave money to struggling causes of the time . Miriam Makeba from South Africa , Harry Belafonte ( Dayo song ) Joan Baez , Sammy Davis of Vegas fame , Adam Clayton Powell the politician , and Peter Paul and Mary ( Puff the Magic Dragon ) all were brave people in a dark time . So this video clip is a time capsule of a funny show that was hated by the Trumpers of that era .
Haha The Who, in particular Pete Townshend, is known for"destroying" his guitars 😃. Great British humour as always. They were very young here, probably the late 60s "Substitute" is another banger. Also, "Magic Bus"
I don't think the station had any idea. The amount of dynamite Keith Moon used in his drum kit put the station off air around the country for a few minutes - they overloaded their signal.
The drum's cherry bomb basically destroyed Pete's hearing. Heard that today he's almost deaf! Also, Pete's hair was actually on fire! That's why he was patting it. The Who also basically created guitar smashing.
the ending where the drums blow up,,,, Peat had his eardrum destroyed cause he didnt know they put too much powder in it and was too close. Watch him get pissed off after the explosion. i was watching that night on tv.
as far as the explosion goes, they knew that an explosion would take place, but they didn't know moon would pack the explosives many times over what was planned - frankly, i don't think moon knew this either. moon had a cymbal slice through his arm and townsend permanently damaged his hearing in one ear as a result. Now, THAT'S dedication to your craft.
Hello HazeBruv, thank you for your videos...check out my two favourite Beatles songs, they should give you almost the same vibe as I want you (She´s so heavy)... First one is Octopus Garden, sung by Ringo and great guitar by George, second and my all time No.1 is Don´t let me down, check out the live on the roof version... Greetings from Germany, peace and love...
My Generation often ended in destruction of the equipment. It was the Who's thing. In the early days, the cost of the instruments they destroyed was usually more than they were being paid for the gig.
Don't know if this was mentioned but..... This is the performance when Pete Townshend claims his sense of hearing took the worse hit of his professional career. Permanently losing some hearing in his left ear. You see, unbeknownst too Keith Moon and the rest of the guys, a stage hand already placed gunpowder and cherry bombs strategically underneath Keiths drum kit for a scheduled, "BANG", to conclude the song. With no one looking, Keith added more gunpowder and cherry bombs before the show. Now his drum kit was equipped with TEN TIMES the amount of explosives he usually used on stage without him or anyone knowing this fact. You can see Pete patting down his head after the explosion because he thought his hair caught fire. Keith Moon was a little shocked himself at the final result. He cut his forearm but was very, very, VERY happy at the end result. The next scheduled guest on the Smothers Brothers Show that evening was the movie screen legend, Bette Davis. They needed smelling salts too revive her. Yuppers, ole Bette fainted when hearing THE BLAST. And in the words of Roger Daltrey, "Waves of shrapnel from the cymbols embedded into flesh, walls, speakers and the floor" Rock and Roll at its finest ladies and gentlemen. ("Shrapnel from the cymbols" 💥😂😂😂😂)
Keith put a little extra pyro in his drum, causing permanent hearing loss for Pete and a cut arm for Keith from a broken cymbal just then! And they were not really playing. You wanna see how badass they were, find some footage from the early 70's.....like Live at Leeds or Isle of Wight of them actually playing. They were a force to be reckoned with! This should be your next Who video, IMO, Young Man Blues live at Tanglewood. The Who were tighter than a frog's arsehole at this point in their career from so much traveling. th-cam.com/video/R1CJuzpuca4/w-d-xo.html
If you want to see a very intense performance where The Who smashed their instruments you should check out the live version of 5:15 on The Top Of The Pops TV show from 1973. There's a long story behind what happened, but in summary there was a musicians strike in the UK. The BBC wanted to honor the musicians strike so they forced The Who to prerecord the music part of the song instead of playing it live. Half way through Pete thought "bleep this" and actually turned his guitar amps on and went into a great guitar solo. The BBC pulled the plug on his amps and Pete went ballistic...with Keith joining in on the mayhem. Here's a link to The Who destroying their equipment live on the BBC: th-cam.com/users/results?search_query=the+who+515+live
This isn't live. It was prerecorded and they mimed it as almost always happened on shows in this era. It's painfully obvious that Keith isn't playing his drums. He's waving his arms about and taking the piss. I think Roger is actually singing though.
un real when i first seen this before the way they arms was and the bass 3 and 4 fingers all hard to d0 like that. s0 unreal they from a n0ther planet that h0w hard it was t0 d0 what they did l0l

as far as the explosion goes, they knew that an explosion would take place, but they didn't know moon would pack the explosives many times over what was planned - frankly, i don't think moon knew this either. moon had a cymbal slice through his arm and townsend permanently damaged his hearing in one ear as a result. Now, THAT'S dedication to your craft.
Right behind the Kinks and the Beatles as top 60s Brit bands.
Listen to John Hiatt's, "Perfectly good guitar."
...sadly the explosion destroyed Pete's hearing in his left ear. A different time and era.
And in the words of Roger Daltrey,
"Waves of shrapnel from the cymbols embedded into flesh, walls, speakers and the floor"
Rock and Roll at its finest ladies and gentlemen.
("Shrapnel from the cymbols"
💥😂😂😂😂)
Keith put a little extra pyro in his drum, causing permanent hearing loss for Pete and a cut arm for Keith from a broken cymbal just then! And they were not really playing. You wanna see how badass they were, find some footage from the early 70's.....like Live at Leeds or Isle of Wight of them actually playing. They were a force to be reckoned with!
This should be your next Who video, IMO, Young Man Blues live at Tanglewood. The Who were tighter than a frog's arsehole at this point in their career from so much traveling.

The BLoody WHO !!

Yep, destroying stuff was their thing.
Forgot to mention, it's funny to still hear the guitar and drums playing in the background even after Pete and Keith destroyed their gear!
Moon put too much explosives in his drum set and Roger temporarily lost hearing. They were known to do this.
Not Roger, Pete.
And not temporarily.
the wildest rock band ever
This isn't live. It was prerecorded and they mimed it as almost always happened on shows in this era. It's painfully obvious that Keith isn't playing his drums. He's waving his arms about and taking the piss. I think Roger is actually singing though.
un real when i first seen this before the way they arms was and the bass 3 and 4 fingers all hard to d0 like that. s0 unreal they from a n0ther planet that h0w hard it was t0 d0 what they did l0l
The first punk band.
