Vintage Inspired Appliances Elmira Northstar vs Big Chill

  • Today we will be comparing two major brands who make vintage inspired appliances. Elmira Northstar line and Big Chill.
    I should add that though the Big Chill might be more affordable the difference can very from a 100 to 1000 dollars so please do your research. I personally would recommend Elmira Northstar Line. To be fair the Big Chill does not make a french door refrigerator. And Elmira Northstar does have a variety of fridges w/ various options and prices.
    Sorry for the typo- just caught the *where mistake... It should be *were

      You should check to see if a local dealer carries it. I was fortunate I had someone local. Hands down the details to the fridge are amazing. Not knocking Big Chill or anything but Elmira line is just such a show stopper. The stoves are amazing as well!

    LOVE your kitchen. So fun!! Thank you SO much for this commentary on retro options. Our Big Chill dishwasher of 24 years has got to be replaced. I did not know at all about the "panel ready" option from Elmira. Nor did I know about the Bosche feature of no exposed heating element. Really helpful as my husband and I make decisions. Thank you.

      Awesome! 24 years that is impressive! I didn’t even know Big Chill has been around that long! I hate that our modern appliances are only meant to last 5-7 years now. I need to do a review on my bosche dishwasher. I think I mentioned it I got a Bosche since it has such great reviews. It does the job, but I wasn’t as impressed as others. It might be my model. I got the middle of the line. Let me know what color you go with regardless of which brand you end up getting. Good Luck!

    My house is done 1970's (Think Brady Bunch) , and I was disappointd to see neiterh company offerered a true coppertone brown color for the appliances. I was also floored by the prices of them. I just ended up buying a 1,200$ Samsung and painted the sides with Modern master antique copper paint, and it looks really good. I miss my 1978 Montgomery Ward fridge... in a perfect world, I'd rather have that back.

    I have an all-original 1930s kitchen with original cabinetry, a bay window, floor-to-ceiling ceramic tile in a soft buttery yellow with light blue trim, and a golden-yellow porcelain sink.
    In 2022 I had to get rid of my 1960-something white Sunray stove that I’d had since 1988. I ended up buying a new stainless-steel stove that air fries and all that. I would have loved to have found a restored late 1940s or early 1950s O’Keefe and Merritt or Wedgewood, but I didn’t. My neighbor promised to gift me her 1950s white O’Keefe and Merritt with turquoise accents. She never followed through. 😢
    I’ve had my white Frigidaire refrigerator for 21 years and I have never had one single problem with it. A vintage-inspired refrigerator in the future would be nice, but I can’t see myself spending $5,000-$10,000 on something that’s probably not going to last as long as my Frigidaire.
    I love the old look though.

    • @vintagepinkpoodle
      @vintagepinkpoodle  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They have cabinet depth option in this style. You loose cubic feet but I prefer that since I don’t like fridges to stick out far. I’ll measure it for you. So you have an idea. It’s essentially just the doors that stick which I believe is 4 inches according to the site dimensions. But I will measure it for you!

    • @Jan-2020
      @Jan-2020 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vintagepinkpoodle That would be great! Thank you.

    • @vintagepinkpoodle
      @vintagepinkpoodle  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry it took me a while...
      Keep in mind the door are curved so the full width of the door is 5 in, but visually it looks like 4 in since that is were the curve begins. The hole frame including the door and actual seal is 5.5 in. I know when I reviewed the measurements Elmira includes the distance to to where the door handles end. So I believe it was like 6-7 in. So when reading the measurements make sure you read the description. Haha! I think that’s why I also went with cabinet depth for fear of the fridge just sticking out too much but realized after it was delivered that it meant to the door handles.

    Hello I am wondering what type of dishwasher to get so that the panel fits on top?

    • @vintagepinkpoodle
      @vintagepinkpoodle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The panel only fits either Bosh panel ready dishwasher or the kitchenaid panel ready dishwasher. Elmira does give you the dimensions for the dishwasher it will fit. So make sure if you go with bosh you select the correct size. Bosh does have dishwashers in various sizes. From when I was doing research there was only one panel ready dishwasher for kitchenaid. It is the same one Elmira uses if you select going with the whole unit rather than just the panel. I can tell you my Bosh isn’t that amazing. I always heard Bosh was amazing. I got like the third tier. Not the most expensive but not the cheapest and it has not impressed. My prior dishwasher was a Cheap GE and that baby cleaned so well. So I figured I should have gone with kitchenaid dishwasher. It is the highest one from their line. So it is a bit pricey, pricer than Bosh.

      Will do. I have had mine for 6 years. Still going, but yes newer fridges don’t last as long as the old ones. Just keep in mind it’s going to be either a kitchenaid fridge or Whirlpool.

  • @erika8627
    @erika8627 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I might have missed it, but do you know what brand Elmira uses for the fridge? Is it Amana? I was wondering if the fridge is quiet or not. Someone else mentioned how it's louder compared to their old fridge. So just curious if you find it particularly loud? Thanks!

    • @MariaPerez-xr8ym
      @MariaPerez-xr8ym 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It used to be Amana long time ago. They use either kitchenaid or a whirlpool. Mine is a whirlpool. It does state on the catalog which brand they use to make the models. So I know for my particular one it stated kitchenaid but I’m glad I got whirlpool. I know at that time that particular model leaked water from the ice tray, which may explain why they used whirlpool. Mine makes no noise. It may make noise if I have it open for too long to clean or if I’m loading it have the door open but that’s only to try to cool the fridge down. I think that’s common with all fridges.

      You can buy direct or from a dealer just go on their website. Find “where to buy”. And do a quick search and it provides you with info on a local dealers. And you can order it through them. And the dealer also carries different models in their store so that gives you an idea of the quality. Or now you also have the option to buy direct from them. All the info is under ‘where to buy’.

    • @vintagepinkpoodle
      @vintagepinkpoodle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mentioned it in the video, but in case you missed it. It is a custom color. I matched the color to rest oleum Candy Pink which is the closest color to the Kitchenaid Cancer pink. And bonus it makes it easy for me to match anything with a can of spray paint. I actually spray painted pink a kitchenaid soda stream. And I’ve been meaning to post a short video on it. Surprising came out really nice. Haha!

    • @vintagepinkpoodle
      @vintagepinkpoodle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Elmira did offer a pink before... flamingo pink which is a peach pink more authentic to the 50s pink. They still carry it but unfortunately it’s considered custom now.... The amazing thing is that Elmira can match colors to almost anything. And they do send several swatches for you to select from when they get the color match. It is a car paint they use so it really durable and resilient to every day kitchen abuse.

    Vintage inspired appliances are cheap nasty crap. Ask anyone who's owned a Smeg fridge or retro chrome toaster, they last a year or two and then burn out. The days of combining good looks with quality just doesn't exist anymore, it's one or the other.
