  • I took my 3D Printed Fly Reel down to the Tongariro River to test it on some big New Zealand trout. It was an eventful test and worth the watch. I am joined by John from Adrift fishing for an unbiased view. We caught a few rainbow trout and gave the fly reel a good workout.
    If you haven't seen how the reel was made, have a look at this video: • I 3D Printed a Fly Fis...

    This is wicked, super entertaining. And well done on the multiple catches. I think the 6 bucks reel may just manage to feed a family! Well done guys!!

      It's definitely an option if used on small streams and a great 3D printing project. Really not bad for $6.80

    I’m amazed the reel lasted as long as it did catching those fish. I think making the connection points interlocking will greatly help with strength. As well as adding the internals of a nicer reel so you have better control over the fish.

      I've been sent a different version with a palming rim and some other improvements that I think will be a future project. Still a fun small stream reel and project none the less

    Very enjoyable Sunday afternoon entertainment, thanks Johan and John. That net will surface eventually for some lucky angler, you never know they may even hand it in at one of the local tackle shops.

    Simply amazing. I’ve been looking into 3D printing fishing gear for myself and a friend, and watching this really giving me the push that I needed. Granted it was a 3llber and you lost the frame, that reel performed pretty well for what it is, and it’s cost. Fighting that current can be a problem on a regular reel, and it held up. Awesome content, so glad I found this. Wishing you much luck on all your future endeavors. Gained a follower here.

      Thank you very much. It was indeed a bit of a rough test and had I glued the frame propperly it would have held up fine. I actually just reprinted the frame and the reel works perfectly now. Might do a small stream vid with it sometime soon again. It's actually perfect for that. Super lightweight too.

      I think once I print and glue on a new frame it will be fully functional again so I will keep fishing it. The plastic is pretty strong so I don't see any problems with it lasting if used to fish small streams. I don't think I would use it on the tongariro again.

    That’s wicked bro, unfortunate about it falling apart but hey you still achieved your goal!

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, should have glued it better but still not ideal for this type of fishing. I'd use it on a small stream any day though.

    That is very cool though, just make sure to print it with asa or polymax. Normally I only strip in the line, so If I ever for some reason used this its fine.
    That is a nice fish though, and great fishing!

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tip on the asa/polymax. I'm not very familiar with 3D printing so I just followed the originators instructions. You can have a look at the other video about the making of the reel to see what I did. The reel is a actually a really nice small stream reel. I obviously didn't glue it that well and took it to a place that I knew was going to be a bit hard because of the size of the fish and currents. But on small streams it will be great.

    haha so cool to see it in action! but man that must have been one strong trout! haha

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The trout are strong and they really take advantage of the current. These were not the big ones either, 3lb is an average fish. A 5lb plus rainbow would have been impossible to land and there are browns in there that are 10lb plus. Once they get down current and turn sideways you really need to turn them otherwise it all goes wrong, like it did.
