This Ikarus (produced in 1964) was firstly used as an urban bus by Tallinn Bus Company. It was renewed in 1973 and was later sold to Estonian Consumers Company in town Viljandi. There the bus was used for selling food products as a mobile shop (not as an ordinary bus). Later it was taken to a small Sürgavere village near Viljandi, where it was used as a private storage. Before the "rescue action" this bus had stood there for about 20 years.
All the steering axles and wheel bearings are still alive, after so many years! Amazing! RIP Ikarus! Unfortunately the whole Ikarus-tale is history for now... :'(
I wish I could join people like that to tackle challenges like that in order to rescue old tired iron. Good job guys. Videos like this make me wish to move to Estonia :)
Some find the excitement and attention a bit silly but for folks that value quality workmanship being restored/rescued....it is just that...a noble action....thanks guys for the posting...good luck!!!!
I love the people in this video. They all work/ play together like there’s nothing else to do. I also love the music that starts when the bus moves. BOC? Yea man. Blessings everyone. I’m from New Jersey USA but Estonia Rocks
У нас такие были на маршрутах городских,в 70х.Мы за них зимой цеплялись,даже бампера отрывали задние=)).Это хорошие люди,они не забывают прошлого,честь им и хвала.
Yes, tires were half-full. It was plenty to pull the bus out of woods, but later some additional air was pumped into tires. Also there was some diesel left in bus fuel tank from Soviet era. :)

And the tires are still intact too! Greetings from Hungary. It is nice to see, that we can really make heavy duty stuffs. See the 30+ old Ikaruses in Budapest. :-)
Good Luck fellows! Don't give up on it! I love this type. I used to be taken to kindergarten on such a bus in the 60's. Restore it nicely. We do not have simple one in Hungary that has been restored. It's a shame!
I am so glad that there is nutty people like you around to keep these things preserved and running. Thanks for being the way you are, best wishes from Denmark
By the way - Ikarus 620 was quite or most popular urban bus in Estonia between 1963 and 1977. The biggest amount of these buses were taken to Tallinn, but they were also used in smaller towns (Tartu, Kohtla-Järve, Pärnu etc.). In Tallinn the 620-series was replaced gradually by 556- and 180-series (and later 260), but in other towns 260-series came straight after 620.
I have already explained it once, but OK. This bus was taken to the shelter of old machines, which is located in the middle of Estonia, Järva-Jaani. Nothing has been done with this Ikarus so far, because of lacking recources. But what is most important is the fact that this bus will remain and will not be scrapped.
The orphanage at my hometown still have 2 of this and still running. Base on what people said, the government own that Ikarus between 1950 until 1975 before gave to orphanage.
Good to see that this Ikarus has been saved. I hope it could be restored in any meaning laters. It's a little piece of our products. Greetings from Hungary! :-)
@CreRay I think it was gearbox that made this weird sound. Bus driver was wondering, if the gear is switched in or not. So after too much of "playing" with gearshift, bus gave its "answer" :) (If you listen carefully, you hear some creaking sound while pulling bus - it means there must be connection between engine and wheels.) As for restauration, I have to admit that not much has happened so far... :( Bus is standing on its location and waiting for better times.
Greetings from Hungary : Köszönöm , Great effort to save , maybe is a pearl in the stack .It's amazing that the tires still holding the original air (?) 😀 that rubber was a original TAURUS tires ? Did you contact the Ikarus restoration team ? They will help you , if you need . Extraordinary hobby , good luck with this bus , hopefully soon would be showing when it's finished . Good luck .
This bus is standing at Järva-Jaani Shelter of Old Machines in Estonia these days and it's basically in the same condition as in 2006 when it was brought there. (I could link you to the webpage of the Shelter, but TH-cam doesn't allow me to post any links for some reason...)
So not much has been changed so far, but at least we can guarantee that this beauty wont be scrapped. If local enthusiasts find some resources for at least basic repairs (and guess how much time and money does this kind of machine demand) - then things could start moving. But there are many-many other machines who also need urgently taking care of - more than 300 all together - so... It all takes time.
Да нет у нас какрас чтоб никому не досталось все в металалом отправят или трактором проедут или закопают .много чего еше живого забрать можно было(с предприятий госслужбы) но нет неположено..😕
It's very nice to see that this one might have a chance to survive. There are only a really low number of surviving 620's in HU that I'm aware of (55's and 66's aren't that popular either but they at least have a measurable population ;-) ).
+Thomas Victor The bus has remained almost the same as it was 6 years ago - unfortunately any resources haven't found to rebuilt this bus. But the bus stays in a secured place (the same yard as seen in the end of the video) and certainly it won't be scrapped. Hope that the future will bring some better news.
Nice work friends! The 620 is rare in Hungary too. If you need some parts write email, maybe I can help. I'm collecting Csepel trucks there is a lot of common things with Ikarus. Best wishes from Hungary!
Martin Männik csepel is "more hungarian" than rába-man.. Btw the cyl head of csepel engine you can take off piece to piece every single cylinder, but i'm sure you saw that. Csepel is a real oldschool engine, Rába is more modern.. But i love both :)

When I was young Budapest public transport was based on this type of bus.
My father was a driver of such a bus.

Yes, but this particular tram is from the series T4, which is more narrow than T3 and is supplied with 1067 mm bogies which are used in Tallinn.
