Narrator: This Tesla Model X refuses to roll over. Unlike most SUVs which tend to roll over with ease, the Model X continues to return to an upright position. Here's why the Model X was the first SUV to receive a perfect crash test rating. When it comes to vehicle safety, size matters. So it's not uncommon for SUVs to be generally safer than your standard sedan. However, they tend to have one big shortcoming. Rollovers.
SUVs are notorious for having a high center of gravity causing them to roll over when put into tight maneuvering situations, or a side impact. Rollovers can result in the partial or full ejection of passengers from the vehicle, increasing the chances of injury or death. In 2016, rollovers happened in one percent of serious crashes in passenger vehicles but accounted for one-third of collision-related deaths.
Over the past three decades, automakers have been able to reduce the frequency of rollovers in vehicles with technology and more stable designs. However, once a serious impact occurs it's just basic physics. A higher center of gravity increases the likelihood of a car tipping or rolling over.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA is the only organization that tests rollover resistance. They also test frontal crashes and side impacts from a pole and barrier. After each test, they measure readings from a dummy to determine how much damage a real person is likely to sustain. They use this data to determine a safety rating in each category and an overall safety rating for the vehicle.
Amongst its many luxury features, the Model X hosts active safety technology such as collision avoidance systems and automatic emergency braking. But what sets the Model X apart is its design. Like other Teslas, the Model X has a large, rigid battery pack located on the floor of the vehicle. This gives the Model X a much lower center of gravity than your average SUV. In the event of a collision that would normally cause an SUV to roll over, this would happen instead.
But rollovers are just one aspect of the safety test. Since the Model X is an electric vehicle, there's no need for mechanical components in the hood of the car. This allows for a much larger crumple zone to absorb energy from a frontal crash. It also has specially-made side sills that absorb energy in addition to its rigid side pillars. These features help reduce the force exerted on passengers and increases their protection. But if you don't have $80,000 laying around for a Model X there’s still plenty of SUVs out there with excellent safety ratings.

INSURANCE, I'm sure most have heard of it. It's called a deductible usually between $250-1,000 and after you pay that the insurance company covers the rest. I should know, my wife has had 3 claims(other drivers fault, deer and hail) totalling $23,000 and only had to pay two $500 deductibles.

Crazy I was in a 5 Time rollover I stayed with my seatbelt on and my friend the driver flew out the front window on the first flip... All he had were scratches and I was flown by helicopter to ICU with multiple broken bones and a suspected pulmonary embolism. 60,000$ in hospital bills later coulda just bought a tesla theses days and claimed insurance 🙄🤔🤣

Although it's nice that the batteries lower the center of gravity, isn't it kind of bad for fire hazards as well? If those batteries set fire (which they do) they're right under your feet, as opposed to an engine in the front or back of the car where a lot of the heat would vent outside instead.
More cars crash on average then catch on fire. So you hedge your bets when creating safety features.
Over 400 internal combustion fires every single day in the US alone. The problem is you don't see one in the media. But one Tesla catches fire in very suspicious circumstances and it's world wide news

Electric cars actually have a way lower chance of catching fire than internal combustion cars, and the statistics prove it.
Battery puncture fires are usually relatively slow and controlled, spitting out fire from only the damaged batteries while the others slowly cook. It's mostly the cleanup that's hard, because without proper care, an electric vehicles batteries could burn one by one for days.
Gas cars literally rely on explosions to operate, which is why they catch fire way more frequently than you might think. And ever seen a gas tank explode? Now that's a big boom.

Regardless of our personal thoughts on the matter, studies from Tesla, governments, and insurance agencies have shows EV’s (particularly Teslas since they’re the most common) are way less likely to catch fire than combustion vehicles. About 11 times less likely. If anyone would know, it’s probably insurance agencies.

If they didn't include the context of a high centre of gravity, then the meaning of low centre of gravity wouldn't be inferred well. A statistic like "1 percent of serious crashes involve rolling yet account for a third of death" is horrifying plus paired with crash tests makes it convincing.You underestimate the power of a story. If you're that hyper sensitive to time just use a youtube playback extension to speed up the video, you could easily watch this video more than twice as fast.

- SUVs do not roll over with ease as stated in the video, if you bought one in the last 20 years they have systems both electronic and mechanical to prevent roll overs, the industry standard "elk or moose test" shown in the video where a vehicle is violently steered in one direction then immediately in the other in an S type manoeuvre at between 70-80kph is standard testing procedure which requires a pass, depending on who did the test, the vehicle manufacturer, independent body, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration etc who is driving the vehicle, what is the road surface being used, what are the weather conditions, fuel load etc all have an impact on the test results so comparison between tests very difficult, test standards are also different around the world.
- The Tesla rollover test footage in the video is not a "real world" test, you will notice the model X rolls over into soft sand how often would you take your X into sand dunes? had the surface been a "normal" road the vehicle would not have rolled back onto its wheels as the wheels would have contacted the hard road surface and prevented roll back, the position of the battery pack will not allow rollback the physics will not work. Phew thats 20mins of my life I wont get back dammit

friends of mine got into a high-speed crash in their BMW x6. multiple rollovers. to my astonishment, they all walked away unharmed. the car didn't even look half as bad as you would expect. modern technology and protection are awesome!

Make sure you have "full replacement value" insurance for the car! My friend had an accident (not his fault even) one year after he bought the car. The insurance only offered him about half the actual value of the car, far less than it would cost to buy a replacement. It took him thousands of dollars in legal fees and two years time to take them to court.

I actually tore these apart at Tesla, also hand built them, I was part of the launch team. Hard work, and very toxic. 60+ hour, 6 day weeks. Most walked off the job.
