Maharshi, and two chapters in his books, A Search in Secret India have
been instrumental for spreading the message of the Maharshi. Munagala
Venkataramiah has preserved for posterity a record of the talks which
spiritual seekers had with Sri Ramana over four years between 1935-39.

Eh, names and words, not as important. Maharishi "means great see'er " and he has been referred to as such. May well be that this word was simply compressed.

Maharishi got shortened to Maharshi. In Tamil, it is still written as Maharishi (Maha- Great Rishi- Sage)
