    The Rode has a deeper more natural sound.

    I just bought it for my Sony RX 100 mark ii. Makes a BIG difference in sound quality compared to using the mark ii's built in mic. I tested the included ECM wind shield in windy conditions (of course) while my friend was talking about 2 feet from me. Although the wind was still noticeable it was very subdued, and I was able to hear my friend clearly.

    Good video, the dead-cat seems to really go to work on cutting down the noise!
    The "ZOOM" setting is actually a bit of trick for more amateur shots. The mic itself being a shotgun style means it highlights what's in view and not the sides, so the zoom feature *actually* just switches between the onboard mic and the shotgun mic as you zoom in.

    Very helpful review - even almost 4 years later !! I just ordered a Sony FDR-AX700 Camcorder and the Sony ECM-GZ1M mis is an accessory that works with this camera. Looks like I'll be putting that on my To Buy list !! Thanks, Charlie

    Thanks for the review. I'm considering an a6000 so the Sony shotgun or stereo mic would be my only option. Quick note about the 'zoom' mode... As I understand it, that mode is for video cameras and increases gain as you zoom in. It's not supposed to be compatible/used with the alpha series cameras

    Excellent test - just what I was looking for. To my ears I prefered the Sony as your voice sounded 'crisper'. I also think that the Sony mic targeted the audio better whilst the Rode seemed to pick up more of the surrounding sounds.

    Listening to this in a quiet place on my phone, the Sony with its own windshield seemed to give the best all round performance. The Rode did a better job of cutting out the "ghetto" background sounds, but isn't a convenient option on my A6000 (no mic port)

    Wow, so the little inexpensive mic actually compares favourably against the big expensive mic. Great review mate, good tests too, not seen anyone else ever test like this with rear noise to test the shotgun mic purpose. Thanks

    Rode picks more 'wind' noise just because it is better on low end frequency range. And that is expected and can be reduced if needed. But voice is definitely better - less 'hissing' on high end - better balance and more natural. Sony sounds a bit more artificial. And I do have a Sony camera :).

  • @depiazdr
    @depiazdr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    All your points were valid. The comment above noting that Rode did have a deeper more natural sound was also valid. I would add that there was no test regarding handling noise - say for a hand-held video shooter. I thought that might be important since the Rode has a shock mount and the Sony does not. (Perhaps, this is the reason that the Sony doesn't pick up a lot of that low frequency band.)

    I actually bought first the mic before looking into a review (which usually I never do).
    But I am satisfied with my purchase nonetheless.
    I am really happy that you did these tests with the Sony Shotgun because it got me to understand better my mic.
    I did film a video where I was too far away from the mic, and on Zoom, and I was trying to understand why my mic was getting the sound from behind so loud.
    Now, taking this video into consideration, I might have done it another way (it's now a plan for a near future). Thanks !!

    Thank you for this review. I don’t need stellar audio for family around the house. I just need something better than in-camera audio and the hotshoe compatibility’s a big plus so I don’t miss moments fidgeting with the audio Jack.

    Thanks for the review. Despite this gear being a bit old and I got it 2nd hand, I have this Sony microphone paired with the Sony ax33 camera. Look forward to shooting off the cuff interviews at the beach!

    Great video! Two things, the dead cat goes over the foam to help with wind even more than just the foam. Also not sure where you were placing the speaker for the "Ghetto Sounds" but if you were pointing it in your direction there is a corner of a wall right behind you which means the front of the microphone is getting second reflections from the speaker.

    Thanks for this amazing review video, John. I thought the audio by Rodeo better than Sony. But, the problem is the price. Rodeo is almost 4 times more expensive than Sony. I'm considering this to choose my purchase.

    Helpful. I think the "Gun" is cleaner sound. Zoom sounds noisier (electronics noise).

    Since you are using the Sony A6500, is the audio sound recording from the Sony microphone being stored on the memory card inside the A6500 camera? When I purchased my A6500, July 2018, the microphone came free as an accessory. I’ve never used it. But I will now. Thanks for your video and your reply.

    • @GadgetJohn
      @GadgetJohn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the mic audio is stored on your card along with your video.

    Great test. Sony is more than half price of Rode Videomic Pro. Everybody test it against that. But why not to compare Sony ECM-GZ1M with Rode Videomic GO? I think that is comparison of the sae legue isn`t it?
    So in your opinion will Sony be better or worse than Go? It is obvious that Sony will be worse than Pro.

    • @GadgetJohn
      @GadgetJohn  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really couldn’t say as I’ve not tested the other mic.

    • @AndrzejWojtyniak
      @AndrzejWojtyniak 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok. I`m not trolling or anything, just curious. Why did you test, let`s say, low budget microphone against twice the price mic? It`s not accusation. Others did it the same. And it will be worse offcourse.
      From your and other tests I can assume, that it is good mic when it stands up to the challange with more expensive one. But I cannot know if it is good against peer mics. Ok to be honest Sony is little more expensive from Rode GO, but I think it will be the same level of price? Mayby it is worth to do that kind of test? Rode GO is popular as well, I think.
      Anyway thanks for this test. It helped me to make my decision.

  • @andreasbuder4417

    The problem, why this microphone is a complete fail, is that you cannot use it off camera. You switched from your boom mic close to your mouth to on camera mic, far too far away for good audio. So, the mic is better than the internal mics, but it doesn’t matter, because from this distance it sounds terrible either way. It would only sound good on a wide angle vlogger setup, where you are closer to the mic, so basically a one trick pony for 100$. The Rode Videomicro is the way better deal, most cameras with the MI shoe have a mic input anyway.

    thanks for the video. is there any videos with a distance test? been looking but havent found any yet

    • @GadgetJohn
      @GadgetJohn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did test it outside at 20m but it didn't even pick up audio - it really doesn't do well at longer distances than show in my video here.
