    Very well designed.
    There was absolutely nothing wrong with the ones you replaced.
    I'm impressed with VForce.

      Yes, my experience has been that the VForce reeds last very well. I think this is largely due to the rubberized sealing surfaces of the cage which I think help reduce the impact shock on the reed when the it closes and seals against the cage, extending it's lifetime.

      @@TokyoOffroad The Yamaha RD LC YPVS also has a vulcanised surface the reeds deflect off.
      Yamaha have designed their reeds with a ~1mm gap. I believe this is so the reeds oscillate about that neutral position (like a pendulum).
      Reeds which are designed to be closed (stationary) have no oscillation : they come to a dead stop each time they close.

      Friends dont let friends dont use V force, the cheap plastic reeds kill engines and they wont warranty your parts , then they blame your engine for damaging their part

    I just shine a light from inside the reed cage and check to see if the reeds seal properly. Usually the stock reeds and/or worn out reeds have problems sealing at the edges. If you don’t see any light leaking between the seat and the reed, you don’t need to replace them. Seemed like you could continue to use your old reeds for at least another 100 hours. Thank you for another excellent video.

      A new replacement reed kit is relatively inexpensive and replacing them periodically (about once every 9months in my case) is preferable if it means I can avoid a failure while out on a ride. But as you suggested, I could have probably used them for a lot longer. My feeling is that the VForce4 reed block, which has a rubberized coating, reduces the stress on the reed petals when they contact the cage, which greatly prolongs the life of the reeds.

      Tokyo Offroad the question that I wanted to ask is how do you compare them to stock reeds. My 300 exc is harder to start when cold compared to when it was new. I suspected the reeds and re-seated them. It now starts easier but still not perfect. I think I will give the VForce4 a try.

      VForce 4 has a rubberized coating ? Big improvement against the VForce 3 !

      I am still running stock reed at 80 hours and wonder if upgrading to v force4 is worth the money. My 17 te250 husky seems to run good still. I did do sx head and JD jetting kit when bike was new which was huge improvement. Thanks for any advice on reeds.

  • @RIPPERTON

    One of the stoppers is warped on its outer edge @ 42 seconds. An outward bow probably heat related.
    The other one is straight 49 seconds.
    That would cause the petal to twist on full opening

    • @theREAL9er
      @theREAL9er 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was turned off by that too, I think I spot that same warping in his unboxing video so I dont think it got worse from riding, I think it came like that. So maybe keep your fingers crossed you get a mint unit

    IIRC, the reed of VForce has the mild curve. Make sure the curve face the correct aspect when installing.

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I inspected the new reed petals before installation. They all were very close to flat and as such I was not concerned about the reed orientation. I read that the Vforce4 cage is designed so that it applies some tension force to the tip, so a minor amount of warpage should be eliminated anyway. Quote from some Moto Tassinari V4R26 literature: "In regards to "proper sealing" the V4R26 should seal completely at the reed tip. However there will always be a sliver of light visible on the sides of a brand new assembly. this is unavoidable due to the design which incorporates a concave surface that preloads the reed tip. After use, this sliver of light typically disappears as the reeds break-in and become seated. This has absolutely zero impact on performance".

    I have V Force reed valves on my sled. One petal broke so I replaced all of them. But try as I may. I couldn’t put the darn thing back together without seeing a tiny bit of light in the two middle petals. Is that enough to make the sled run rough in the midrange? Idles decent. Had good top end. But the midrange is garbage under constant throttle. I have flutter the throttle at lower speeds

    Hello again. I have the 2019 KTM 300 XC in the USA. Im curious about this Reed issue. I got the bike running really well at this time. Are you hearing anything about the Reeds in the 2019 KTM 300 XC. I have the TMX 38 Carb with the JDJetting kit with the seal block fix. Thank you ahead of time for your response.

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 2019 model uses the same reed block and reeds as the 2017 and 2018 models. IMO the quality is not good and I would recommend using a VForce4 reed valve instead.

  • @MrBlompod

    cool vid thanks. I have a 2020 KTM 300 TPI, a Vforce reed valve here in Oz is like 250 dollars, think it gives 250 dollars worth of extra performance over stock?

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think there's that much difference in performance. But I do think there is a very significant improvement in quality, reliability and petal lifetime.

    Have you tried the boyesen reeds? They seem to be much better built material wise.

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the 1990s I used Boyesen reed valves on the bikes I had. Recently I've only used stock KTM and Moto Tassinari. I get long service life from Moto Tassinari, change them at 150H (same time as piston) and haven't noticed any damage yet.

    My outside petals keep falling out on my 2001 Yamaha blaster and I’m positive I installed them right.

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you using a VForce4 reed cage? If installed correctly I don't see how the petals could fall out. They are held in securely and there is no gap. I suggest you contact the manufacturer if you think you have a faulty unit.

    Can anyone tell me the main reason for these breaking? I've been through 3 sets in 2 years 🤷🏼‍♂️ just replaced them today

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  ปีที่แล้ว

      The reeds are a wear item an do need replacing. I typically replace mine the same time as replacing the piston, every 150H. Over a long operation time the reeds become stressed (from bending and hitting the reed cage) and will eventually fail.

      The part number for the reeds is VPR612M. Four reeds, reed retainers and a tool are included. If you need a gasket (G426) you'll need to order that separately

    Good to replace i guess i just dont see the point of why u did this, had lots of life left in them i would of just kept checking them every 30 hrs or so and replace them when u need to that way u have a brand new back up set.

      Yes, I don't like wasting money either. Based on the condition of the first set of reeds after 100H, I plan to use the new set for 150H and will change them when I next overhaul the top end. I'll inspect them after 75H to make sure they're doing OK.
