    For anyone having this issue with there Saturn. I had 12v at the purple wire where it plugs into the blower motor. The ground wire was fine also. The blower motor still wouldn't work on any setting. I pulled the blower motor out, ran 12v to it, and it spun. So the motor was fine. Traced everything back from there in this video and everything checked out fine. I took the driver side kick panel off, and you can see the bulk connectors that connect to the fuse box. The far left connector is where the purple wire goes that powers the blower motor. I loosened the screw in the middle of the bulk connector and pulled it out. Sure enough where that purple wire connected into the fuse box was corroded and slightly black. Cleaned up the pin. Cleaned the purple wire connector the best I could in the bulk connector and put it back together and the blower motor works. If you have no low speeds, but have the high speed, it is most likely your resistor pack. If you have low speeds, but no high speed. It's most likely the relay. If you have no speeds at all, then it's most likely going to be a wiring/fuse/connection issue. Hope this helps someone.

    thank you very much. Your video helped me realized that testing the connections at the relay is very helpful. Because you could find if the switch is bad, if you resistor is bad, if your fuses are bad or if your relay is bad.

    Sorry, you are correct. You are measuring current. DC; Direct current! The voltmeter works by measuring the current through a fixed resistor, which, according to ohms law is proportional to the voltage across the resistor. An electric current is a flow of electric charge. In electric circuits this charge is often carried by moving electrons in a wire...which is what you were checking for.

    2:15 Before running out to spend money for a new motor, first check to make sure that it's not just a corrosion buildup on the terminal, in which case just clean it off, maybe apply some dielectric grease, and viola you just saved yourself some bucks to use for beer and pizza after a job well done.

    Thank you for making this video! I was able to diagnose and fix the problem with my heater blower motor! Mine turned out to be a bad connector at the motor! Unfortunately the wire that connects to the blower motor can be bumped by the passengers feet and cause a short! I corrected this by taking some electrical wire and pulling the wire up and wrapping the tape around the motor. wire and connector. This should prevent someones foot from inadvertently striking the wire!

Found the same wire harness @ junkyard for $2.00 and spliced it in about 4" back from old plug .. works like a charm ... Plenty of A/C & heat NOW !! Thanks !

    Hi..,. thanks for the video... I'm stuck at step 1... no continuity... what do I check? I "rigged" a ground wire from the blower ground pin connection on the blower itself to a door frame bolt and connected the power part of the connector to the blower motor and it ran when key was turned on, but only on high speed and it didn't matter what the fan control was turned to ... even when turned off, the fan still ran, high speed, as long as the key is on. Thanks for your help. My car is a 2004 Chrysler Sebring...

    I would like Rich to explain how one can see current using a voltmeter, Every time Rich said you should see current there he was in fact looking at the voltage at that point. Presence of a voltage does not mean there is a current there. A voltage can exist without a current being present but current cannot exist with out a voltage. Current is measured with an ammeter and is placed in series with the load. Rich's procedure seems to be good but his terminology is sometimes wrong.

    Here's a question. I have a 2007 Dodge Durango. I made it to the early stage of this video where you check for ground. I didn't find continuity so figured there's no ground. Any idea, where the ground should come from? I put a jumper into that side of the plug and took it to ground and the fan works. I wasn't sure if I could just permanently wire something in like this or if there is an easy place to look to see why I've lost the ground.

    Thanks for the great diy on how to check all this - IF there's current. I have none, not even to the ING 3 fuse. Since your troubleshoot was on a vehicle that was in proper working condition, power everywhere, great ground, etc. However, there's nothing - no advice as to where to go next if there's no power even getting to the first fuse. Without power I'm dead in the water. The fuses are great, look almost new, and the blower motor and relay are probably good as well - except, how do I find the disconnect, where to start. I'm really kind of under a time constraint. My 79 year old mom lives in MO, I'm in Reno, Nevada and she's having problems with somebody who wants to steal her property. I need to go see her asap. This is a project car, was before her troubles started, now, I'm putting it together as swiftly and correctly as possible. But it's an auction buy and has all kinds of title issues like no heat, no defroster, etc. Can someone please help me out here? I I'll be most greatful.

    My 2002 SL blower would stop working for minutes at a time (no matter the speed). Now, it won't work at all.
    New inside fuse and new relay. Good current (12.4v) and ground (cont) at the blower plug. Blower motor worked when connected to a 12v jump-start.
    Could the resistor be preventing enough power from reaching the blower while still maintaining 12.4 v?

    This video is fairly old so I 100% understand if you don't reply but I have a 1994 Saturn sc2 n I have no power at all to the ign3 and hvac fuse in interior fuse box...checked all the obvious things other fuses/relays/fuse box itself the wiring in the blocks and the pins in those fuses spots and there is NOTHING out of the ordinary but I still can't figure out why there's not currently flowing to just those 2 fuses all the rest are good..so basically I have 2 questions.. 1: what do u recommend next? 2: do u know what feeds the hvac fuse? I looked in owners manual and some diagrams but can't pi point what actually send juice to the hvac fuse...any help would be GREATLY appreciated..thanks

    the resistor goes on the blower motor causing it to blow slowly and thats the first thing that goes on toyota tacomas at least mine did and replacing it will give you a brand new like high speed full speed blower motor once again after you replace it . Usually the blower motor goes and it doesnt even turn on but if its blowing slowly then its likely that you need a new resitior for the blower motor and many times its right underneath or right next to the blower motor.

  • @RichpinTv
    @RichpinTv  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The lower fan speeds go through the blower motor resister before they go to the motor.So i would start by looking at the blower motor resister.

    I have a 2002 Impala and the blower just went out when I shifted from park to reverse. I checked began to check the DCV at the blower motor itself like you have here but when I was at the blower motor to check for voltage I do not get a constant voltage. It seems to have a slow drop as I continue to check it but is by no means constant or anywhere near 12 V. Would I continue to check the relays/fuses or would this possibly be something different. Thank you very much in advance.

I have rear defrost but that is separate from the other controls and uses those lines on the window when I press a button. Any guesses? I would hate to buy a blower motor when it could be something else.

    It's Voltage not "current," but aside from that, good video. Except you didn't check the coil resistance of the Blower motor itself. If you suspect the blower motor is bad, why not start there? If the blower turns at all on all the speeds the problem is NONE of the things you checked. If the problem is only one fan "speed" only then is it the resistor (not worth the effort to replace for loss of one speed). My 1996 SL1 has 257,000+ miles on it and the original blower motor is just starting to go bad. Speeds vary widely with no change in controls. I was surprised to find OEM replacements for $30 - 100 all over the place.

    I still cant figure it out. I have voltage at the blower motor, but it seems low, like 10 volts, the switch seams to work(turning it up and down makes the voltage at the fan go up and down, but never above 10 or so volts. The fan motor is new, the relay is new, the switch is used but new to me, and i'm down to the last thing the resister. My question is: If I have LOW voltage at the blower motor, does that mean the resister bad? Also, is there any way to test the resister before i go buy one?

    Hi Rich at 2.06 you mention "if you see current there then thats the problem, the motor is bad..." (checking the purple wire) Thats where im stuck because I got continuity at the black wire, but at the purple wire (meter setting at 12 vdc) I got no current there (0.00). So I went ahead with each step thereafter and I checked off "ok" on each step you provide from there. to the end. The blower dosent work. Continuity at the black wire, check. Current at the purple wire, no. Ground at relay, check. Live current at the socket, check. IGN fuse test light, check. Connection to the switch, check. 15 amp fuse, check. Check resistor, check. So could it be the switch? If it is. could you do a video to show the replacement procedure my friend. I would appreciate your kind guidance with this. Thank you in advance and God bless you and your family for all you have done for so many years for all us little guys.

      Relay. Or bad connection somewhere. My 2006 Saturn Vue had a bad connection at a specific power wire. Common problem. I could have spent hundreds on parts but it ended up being a free and easy fix. I feel bad for people who take their car to a shop. The internet is the place to go if you have even a bit of skill. Technicians will waste so much time scratching their heads, throwing parts, and charging you $$ the whole journey.

    Here's my issue. I drive an 06 Chevy Equinox and replaced the blower because it gave out on me. I got a new one, it worked for 2 weeks before it stopped, ended up getting a refund for that and got a replacement. Still nothing is working. I have noticed that I have no continuity at the ground wire (purple wire) and have power flowing through the red/white wire. Here's the kicker though, there is power going through the red/white wire whether the ignition is on, the AC is switched on or not. So what could be the possible issue in this regard?

    My meter has two settings on my meter which are DCV and DCA which one do I use? Also on the ground wire test I have nothing coming up on meter. So does that mean it is my blower motor thats toast?

    I have current at the motor connector, I changed the motor and it still wont turn on. If I have current at the connector why in the world will the fan not run when it's a brand new AC delco

    Can anyone help with a 96 Saturn SL2 problem? Started my car today and turned on the heater fan and the fan blows fine but I hear a clicking sound from under the glove box area. I found that if I push in the "re-circ" button with the fan switch on the clicking sound under the glove box will stop. If i turn the fan switch on for ventilation, heat or for normal AC the clicking under the dash comes back. Now I must drive with the re-circulation button pushed in to get max AC with no clicking. Why?

    Hi richpin . My blower motor won't work on high but all other speeds it does. When I check the voltage at the blower plug there is 12 volts. I do have continuity to ground. Could it be a bad blower motor? Thanks

    • @RichpinTv
      @RichpinTv  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the plug has ground and the purple wire has good voltage with the switch on high the motor should work.Doing a bench test would confirm if the motor is good or bad.

    • @lostoffroad3914

  • @mikeryan5326
    @mikeryan5326 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    yeah but now you are spreading the prongs where relay and plugs goes by using a cotter pin. You are creating and future poor contact . You should use proper test equipment, that cotter pin is a lot thicker than a blade contact on the relay

    My 2001 SL2 blower motor works on low speed (1) and high speed (4) but not on 2 or 3. I checked the resistor slot as you said in the video and found 12 volts there no matter what setting. I kinda thought the voltage would change as it went through different resistance circuits. If the resistor pack is fine, why are 2 and 3 not working? Weirdly, sometimes when the blower motor is going at speed 1 (which it does as I move it from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3), sometimes it jumps to 4. Any further advice?

    • @RichpinTv
      @RichpinTv  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      @jamesblackburnlynch 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      richpin06a Well, I removed it and took a look. Nothing obviously burned out. I checked ohms across each set, but wasn't really sure what to look for. Any idea what the range should be? I had set the multimeter at 20K but I've seen that they might be more like in the 1 ohm range. Should I see a raising of resistance for the lower speeds? Why don't I see a lower voltage for each speed at the relay?

    • @RichpinTv
      @RichpinTv  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Blackburn-Lynch
      Are you seeing voltage at the purple wire in all speeds.

    • @jamesblackburnlynch
      @jamesblackburnlynch 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      richpin06a I just don't understand this. I have 12.3 volts at the purple wire in all four speeds. 0.4 volts when off. I thought the whole idea was the resistor pack lowered the voltage sent to the motor. But it's the same for all speeds and somehow, speed 1 is very slow and speed 4 is very fast (and speed 2 and speed 3 are usually going speed 1 but sometimes pop up to speed 4).
      Any clues?

    you are measuring Voltage not Current. Current is measured by putting your multi meter on Amps not DC and connecting the meter in series within the circuit you are measuring, which in car circuits is close to impossible. just a friendly correction. not trying to be a jerk.
