Does the Fuji X100VI Make Sense?! Retro Vs. Modern

  • When FujiFilm (I call them Fuji!) started making retro inspired cameras years back they didn't make sense to me. Canon and Nikon had been perfecting the ergonomics of cameras over decades and they had become near perfect. It took a while for me to understand what & who of a rangefinder-style digital camera was for. Why buy a cropped sensor camera when a Canon EOS R8 interchangeable lens mirrorless camera was roughly the same price? Let talk about it.

    Very nice video! I started shooting with Leica in 1968. I got a BFA from Art Center College of Design and spent nearly 20 years as a professional photographer (including time I worked at a TV station when I was in high school). back in the film days, before changing careers. After the career change, I became a happy enthusiast but had a dedicated darkroom in my house.
    I started digital with a Canon G2, then went to a Canon Rebel and from there to Canon 5D2 before moving to Fuji. Being a Leica M3 guy, I liked the Fuji X-E form factor. I think the X-100 is lovely, but I find a fixed lens limiting.
    I had a surprise when going to Fuji. I find I could use my Canon EF lenses with an adapter and get autofocus and aperture control. I kept all my EF lenses and especially like using my 135L and 70-200 f2.8. I also found I could get adapters for my vintage Canon FL and FD lenses, plus my Leica M lenses. I now collect and use other vintage lenses from Minolta and Nikon. The old lenses actually look great!

      Very cool. Thanks for dropping this comment - I enjoyed it.
      I plan to make a video with my Minolta lenses on the Canon soon via adapter.

    I picked up the ZF this fall and am in love. Perfect balance between iq, performance, adaptability, design and price.

    I got tired of lugging all the lenses because I felt I needed to bring them because I had them. Sort of a sunk cost fallacy. I managed to get the 100v after months of scouring Best Buy.
    Now I absolutely love this camera. I am motivated to use this camera over my D810. I like that it has a fixed focal length and forces me to think about composition more. I don’t bring all the lenses that bog me down.
    However, the right tool for the job. I still use my 810 for when it’s called for. I primarily use the 100v for lifestyle photos and street. Every time I pulled out my D810 with my 70-200 on it, I think of that line in Blazing Saddles. “Excuse me while I whip this out”

      100% I have done one lens photo walks so many times even when I'm carrying something that I have multiple lenses for. I love the zoom with your feet" mentality. ...and it is what I mostly do when I ride my bike with the R8 - just leave that tiny 28mm on it.
      As I kind of alluded to in the video pro work is different - today the LandBank was kicking of the demo of a giant old foundry. I needed my flash for the backlit speakers, telephoto for the back ha demo shots, wide angle to capture the stage of speakers etc. As you said - right tools for the job.
      But it is always best to go simple when you can!
      Cheers!

    debating on the x100vi. The V is my only digital camera - use it for everything that's not film. The upgrades in megapixels, sensor, and IBIS has really got me thinking. It's a hot debate but kinda seems worth it. I'd probably have to unload my Nikon F5 and a couple lenses to make it work though.

    • @fitzwaterphotography9971
      @fitzwaterphotography9971  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you can think of cases where the higher resolution and IBIS would come in handy for your shooting style than it is probably worth it. I find IBIS to be much more of a video feature....but it really depends on what you photograph. Some of the stuff you shoot in low light(buildings) might really benefit from the IBIS and handholding at slow shutter speeds ...so I could see why it would be intriguing.

      @@fitzwaterphotography9971 good points. I’m trying to not to upgrade just for the hell of it. But I do like shooting video and unfortunately v is pretty terrible for that. But I’ll certainly keep this in mind- cheers.

    I love film to but in Australia to get a film developed now has to go to Melbourne, for me that is like you sending it to SoCal. I still have three cartridges of 126 to have developed from a trip I did up north here in West Oz when I was 10, that should be interesting as it was forty years ago lol… Great vid as always Tim.. 🍻

      Hopefully that film is B&W! (and really hope it isn't Kodachrome or you will never see it!) I do my own B&W at home - kind of over color as film and processing prices are through the roof! I had a lab done the street that just closed.😢
      Thanks Red!

    Nikon's first attempt if you remember was the Df DSLR, which lacked video. It was a cool camera, but I think I remember it being criticized for being expensive.
    My mirrorless journey started out with a then new Panasonic G2 as my intro to mirrorless. Got a Sony SLT A57 cause I could get a cheap Minolta lens for wildlife with very good AF. I had the setup but couldn't bond with it like I did with the Panasonic cameras I had(GF3 at the time). Traded the Sony to fund a Fuji E-X1+27mm. Haven't looked back since. Still have the 27mm, but now have the X-E2S & X-T30, thanks to eBay. The Fuji 27mm f2.8 for years was my go to on the hiking & on bike combo. Something about Fuji makes me want to bring it everywhere. My go-to combo right now is a Voightlander 15mm f4.5 LTM. Really pairs well imho with Fuji's color science in raw & jpeg.

      Ah yes - I do remember the Df now! I thought it was very cool looking at the time but impractical. Those SLT's - were they the ones with the translucent mirrors? I've always been interested in Sony because I'm a Minolta film camera guy. I didn't make the jump early on because the small Sony cameras didn't look pro - I don't care about that but my older clients still expected to see a big dSLR. Appearances matter - or mattered.
      Seems like you got the right stuff figured out for yourself! Cheers!

      @Alex_564 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@fitzwaterphotography9971 The SLT if I remember correctly the mirror was fixed. It was like the only DSLR with an EVF because of it. But, in turn, it meant faster AF at lower price. On paper it was the right camera, but in the real world, no connection.

    Good Video, do shoot with canon and going back and forth getting a grab and go cam, so the Fuji is tempting. Would like to see a compact canon again, that would be great, let’s hope competition is bringing something out one day. Film is cool but I am not into that, yet. Like to see the results sort of before hand. On the other hand it would help to work on my regular foto skills which do lack quite a lot if I am honest 😊

      @fitzwaterphotography9971  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It would be cool if Canon made another fairly high end fixed lens camera.
      The Fuji is the best option in the cropped sensor field I think.
      Film definitely helps you nail shots - every shot costs you money!

    I switched to Fuji from Canon because of the image quality not ergonomics. I prefer the Fuji lenses and Xtran sensors. The ergonomics and lower prices are gravy. (Canon auto focus blows away Fuji auto focus, but that is not the most important thing to me for my type of shooting)

    • @fitzwaterphotography9971
      @fitzwaterphotography9971  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Being that we do very different types of shooting it would be impossible to have the same opinions. Canon color does make a difference to me because of video - just less work in post - but I don't have a Fuji sensor to compare image quality(still or video)
      I stand by modern Canon ergonomics as an event shooter - but again so much less important for the product work you do(as with the AF)

      Canon is pretty famous for having very natural skin tones and realistic color rendition in general. Granted color is very easy to adjust when shooting raw so I only find it important in a video work flow.

      @@fitzwaterphotography9971 hmm 🤔. So that explains it! So I have more learning to do. As stated I’m just getting into learning about camera adjustments. And I really wanted to shy away from raw editing. Thanks for the education!

    • @fitzwaterphotography9971
      @fitzwaterphotography9971  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The thing to remember is that if you don't do the editing you are letting the cameras algorithms do the editing. I would set your camera to shoot jpegs and raw at the same time. Then you at least have the option to start learning editing.

    Interesting post. Styling wise i think of Fujifilm X100 following a vintage route and the Canon R series following the ugly retro route. The iPhone generation isn't going to see the Canon as modern imho

    • @fitzwaterphotography9971
      @fitzwaterphotography9971  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I feel that people in the "real" camera market would see the Canons as modern. They did upgrade a bit of the design language(more angular) with the R's. I guess I kind of know what you mean by "iphone generation" but aren't we all that? I own an iphone, vintage film cameras, and modern cameras....

      @@fitzwaterphotography9971 I've started to come across the generation that have phones but not computers. They don't think of email as a modern method of comms either. I think something like DJI Osmo looks more modern than the R series, which looks decades old - why else would it be covered in plastic that tries to evoke animal leather? That's another reason why I think their styling and designs are retro - the companies are trying to evoke an earlier design.
