I'm fine with a new Xbox in 2026. The Series X is a great console, and I've found myself playing Xbox a lot more this generation than in the past.
It's been nice to have the competition. Microsoft did a really nice job with backwards compatibility. Gamepass is incredible. The Series X and S controllers are finally really good.
I've been mostly playing Playstation as my primary console since the PS1. It has become rather difficult to store all my legacy Sony hardware.
I like the way Microsoft is handling the Xbox platform. It's getting to be more like PC gaming. Xbox is the platform, and the console just determines how much horsepower you have available. All your games and accessories continue to be available.

Power definitely matters to me, that being said I haven’t seen a game this generation utilize the RDNA software suite, at least on Xbox. So many games have been let’s focus on the PS5 and then port to Xbox. Rarely have I seen it the other way around. So if a rumored Xbox Next comes in 2026… Will developers utilize the power of the hardware??
It’s all rather interesting. As most know the Xbox 360 launched a full year ahead of the PS3 and that paid dividends for Xbox, in fact the PS3 didn’t catch up and pass Xbox until the end of the console generation.

I don't think the PS3/360 thing will ever happen again. Even if XBOX has a 3yr head start on the next PS console. The gap in popularity is just to wide now. Anyone who got a PS4 / 5 will just continue to get one and the releases of PlayStations will just get more and more hype. After 2020 they know they can create their own FOMO. SONY can literally bring "sorry that's out of stock" back to gaming, and people will wait for it. Playstation is the Jordan 1 of gaming. Tell me I'm wrong.

You can have a box of different spec on every screen in your house, even a pc, and be playing a game then move to another screen and all your save is current. You buy a game once. You can upgrade the console and not have to re-buy any games or pay more to upgrade them. I can play most of my library back to the og xbox and it still works and is sometimes upgraded no cost.

I hope the ray-tracing/path-tracing performance issues get solved by then, and by that I mean having path-tracing by default without the insane performance hit as of today. The PS5 install base will be so much larger than any Xbox "next" machine the 3rd party devs will inevitably concentrate on the PS5 and not take advantage of the "next gen" specs of Series next ( or whatever it's called) until a PS6. Good! I hate the idea of mid gen pro consoles. All they do is drag along a console generation for more years than they should with old, outdated tech. Go back to standard 5 - 6 year generations. X1/PS4 gen dragged on so long with that crap AMD Jaguar processor. PS5 will be stuck with Zen 2 and RDNA 1.5-2ish until likely 2028. The tech is already outdated and showing it's age now.

Given that today's consoles are basically purpose built PCs, I would welcome a shift to a more incremental update cycle similar to Smartphones and regular computers. This is of course contingent upon the continued support (eg. still being able to play the latest games but with lower performance/quality) for discontinued model for at least 5 years (similar to how latest versions of macOS and Windows are still available on older hardware).
IMO, an incremental update model also provides at least TWO distinct benefits. #1: An increase in GOOD 2nd hand consoles from people who "always want to upgrade to the latest". #2: It simplifies your options in cases where someone's old console dies a year or two before the release of the next generation. The latter being especially important given that today's consoles costs a lot more at launch and doesn't not become significantly cheaper at the end of their lifecycle!

I thought I remember Phil Spencer saying next gen won't happen until 2028. Maybe he ment that new games won't work for the series consoles at that year. I'd be fine with a new console in 2026 and no more new games on or after 2028 for first party titles. I assume some 2026 games will be cross platform until then.
I'll still rock my series x for a long time still. I still use my ps4 to replay old games. That thing is almost 10 years old.
At some point it just gets annoying to have to buy new tech all the time and I'll just stick with what I have for now. I bought a new phone a couple years ago and it's already outdated.
I went back and played doom 2016 on my ps4 after playing doom eternal on my series x and honestly they are basicly the same thing. The only difference is loading is super fast on the series x and the maps are slightly larger I think.
I imagine that the jumps in graphics and differences between noticeable leaps will be smaller and smaller from gen to gen.

The USB C port is probably the most interesting thing about it. I still use my Xbox One X aside from my PC. In order to speed up load times I have a Nvme SSD in a case, using a USB C to USB A cable. Theoretically that USB A port, even if it's a USB 2.0 is a bottle neck. Such a drive on a USB C port, with the proper circuit could bring an external drive to near speed parity with the built in, and proprietary cartridge drives. This may mean XBox might allow the latest Gen games to run directly from remote drives. You could buy an Nvme SSD case, stick a 4TB drive like a very fast WD or Samsung drive in it, and install all your games. Installing back and forth from a remote drive to local drive decreases the life span of both drives.

In your interview quote at 6:45, I don't get the impression that Phil is talking about gameplay at all. He begins the sentence with "lighting techniques". He's saying there're different knobs you can do to affect graphics and performance, that there's more headroom to be explored in terms of hitting the absolute limit of graphical fidelity and framerate.
He said it's not always about "pixel count or frame resolution". There are yet technologies to be leveraged, to increase the performance (framerate) of games, while sacrificing little of the fidelity (not just resolution but appearance as well). Nothing to do with gameplay.
It really sounds like he's talking about graphical technologies which makes your takeaway really weird considering you say yourself that you conducted this interview.

Compelling exclusive game are definitely a reason for someone like me to buy a console.

So jumped ship to PlayStation in 2010 since I skipped the PS2, because the PS3 had a line up of games I wanted but I could only play on PlayStation.

      @davidandrew6855 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Ben84s Sure, I'm not saying they don't get someone to buy a console, just that overall they don' drive sales beyond a certain point.
I had a great time with my 360 between 2008 and 2013. Then I got the Xbox One and another fantastic time, but the PS4 was just on another level for hardware and the exclusives.
They (exclusives) don't, look at the tie in numbers the biggest selling 1st party franchise for Sony is GT, love the game. It counts for less than 20% of the hardware tie in, meaning there were 80% more hardware sold than copies of the games. I am sure it brought in some users, but not the masses. That was something else apparently. I'm betting the better hardware during the PS1 days, set the foundation, then the PS2, while not the most powerful arguably and certainly the hardest to program, just took off an never looked back, having the 1st console that could be a DVD player surely helped.
Playstation has achieved a pop-culture level status, and it is beyond the exclusives that achieved this. It was a combination of the right things, eco-system, hardware marketing, competition blunders, that helped Sony get to where they are.
That is why Phil Spencer said, exclusives will not make people jump ship to other hardware, it doesn't work. Maybe back in the days of Genesis/Super Nintendo, I remember buying one just for one game. It doesn't work like that anymore.
      Sorry for the long reply.

I don't think Microsoft is pushing distinct generations. Which I think is good for the consumer, that games are hardware agnostic.
I do think that the current crop of consoles bit off more they could chew. I don't think 4k60hz is a reasonable target for them without massive amounts of coaxing from various tricks like foviated rendering and rts and other gpu saving tech.
So I'm in the camp that Microsoft should Launch better hardware to make up for the lack of success from the developers. AND developers should make better games and engines to leverage the hardware better.
We've been in a sort of whirlwind of hardware improvements, going from Rtx 2000 series to 4000 series is incredible, and RDNA 1+ to 3 has been massive as well... so going from 1 to 3+ on a 4nm node should help get everything inline for a console to do the 4k60hz thing it set out on launch day to do.

We don't see every game on Series X running at 3x the framerate and 2x the resolution, which we should if Series S was "holding it back", right? This notion that Series X is just running Series S game at a higher resolution, doesn't really make sense, when Series X has fps issues in some games.
      IMO.

I agree that they are releasing in 2026, it makes sense to release a bit earlier and use the strategy that has worked this Generation, Keep the Series S and X until they release the next generation in 6 years, so a 12 year cycle with the "next gen" coming out halfway through would be a good move to allow the hardcore to have updates sooner and allow the casual audience to get all the latest games, but only having to update every 12 years, and for developers you have 6 years of working with the hardware before it becomes your baseline consol. Seems like a good strategy to me.

Whatever happened to that dealer gaming guy that used to do Xbox live podcast every week on RDX podcast? Have not seen him do any podcast for many months.

With series S microsoft make mistake, make weaker base console and give sony have faster standard console.
If microsoft release new consoles in 2026 sony will has(again) faster standard base console in 2028

In my opinion, GeForce Now is ahead of the game when it comes to streaming. At least, where I live, it has worked great for me and the streaming quality is excellent.

    If this isn't true...
The influencers spreading this are doing tremendous damage.
Ppl won't buy the current console if they think a new one is coming so soon.
    To add on to this...
Now you're gonna have 3 completely different SKUs to ask third party to develop for?
You are already seeing developers skip or release their games later on cause of trouble developing for the X and S.
This will make things so much worse.
MS has to be smart enough to know this is a really dumb move

With cloud streaming and excellent backwards compatibility, MS could release a console every year if they wanted and no one would be blocked from amazing games due to generation changes.

that woudl be cool, but the major thing I hope it has is a way to play discs, because I'm in Australia and we have some of the slowest internet speeds in the world, especially where I am, so if it would be cool if it can play discs in one way or another

I don’t think this gen of games are going to see their full optimized potential.
I remember when consoles launched the very first games paled in comparison in quality to final generations because developers learned more of the hardware overtime.
Now it’s just get a brick in every hand and let developers sort it out and fanboys defend the decisions

All I want is for Xbox to Support 21:9 UltraWide Displays for True Cinematic Gaming so we no longer have to choose between Black Bar Games & Movies.

Any upscaling on Xbox will be done via FSR, not DLSS. DLSS is exclusive to Nvidia. Doesnt look like we're getting away from upscaling and frame generation going forward. It's not fully baked yet but does offer some benefits.

The latest FSR 3 mods work great on The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk. It's a sick joke though, I have an AMD GPU and can't use these mods, or at least last I checked lol.

It doesn't matter if they release a next gen console if games are still going to have to run on Xbox one, series s and x.
