    I live in a poxy house with a poxy mortgage and a poxy job, my life is hell, nothing can be any worse than that.
    That pile of bricks is going to market in the new year and i'm going to get me some freedom.

    Good advice, I've been planning my new boat layout and equipment for over 2 years. I've actually changed career and now work in a canal boat yard. I get to see hmany of the better designed boats, speak with their owners and my plan has changed the more I learn. I'm buying a Sail away next year and my biggest cost is heating, double glazed windows and an air vent system. If nothing else my boat will be bone dry and warm which for me is the most important thing with living on a narrowboat.

    • @ZacharyDenman
      @ZacharyDenman  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Dan, sounds great and your getting good experience from the boat yard. Have a great Sail and all the best with your heating bits, it is costly, but in the long run your'll be saving on the gas when being well insulated.

    • @itchyvet
      @itchyvet 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dan, may I suggest whilst you have the opportunity, to install good insulation as well as the double glazed windows ?

    • @ianhollands1641
      @ianhollands1641 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can never have too much insulation and the time to insulate is in the build. I have spray foam with an inner lining of aluminium bubble wrap. doing it again , would probably go for several layers of multi layer al. I would also install under floor heating. Not difficult, just three (equal ) lengths of 10mm pipe with a control valve so that you take water from your hot supply , through the pipes back to your main water tank. You just open the valve to fill the pipes with hot water then close it. Aah the shear bliss of warm feet.

    Nailed it! Same as full time RV life. Freezing cold in winter and baking in oven hot in summer. My camper isn't connected to a septic system so I get the extra joy of dumping my sewage into buckets and hauling them into town to dispose of. Really brings you close to yourself, and our core humanity. The enlightenment and healing power of solitude and manual life is impossible to fully describe. It has to be experienced. And yes, most people won't value it or embrace the lessons of actively LIVING and not just existing via pushbutton.

      I was wondering how you were getting on. I replied to your comment you made about three years ago. Anyway, I think the real test is when you actually sell your house and live on the boat in true 'Liveaboard' style. At the moment, you have purchased the boat but still have the safety of your home to go back to if and when things get a bit rough. Perhaps another update when you're a true liveaboard boater and lived through a couple of harsh winters. Best of luck to you. 👍

    I grew up in Northern Quebec and my grandfather's best friend was eaten by a bear, another lit up by a strike of lightening (one of several because we had great storms), there was the prevalence of terrible logging truck accidents, blizzards, hunting accidents, deer ticks, lyme disease, mosquitos that could carry off a small goat, etc. I think the advice in this video is well made. Excellent in fact. I would personally find narrow boating a lot of fun and I suspect I would become an alcoholic very quickly because I could dock beside a pub and crawl back to my deck knackered. I also note that you don't really travel far distances, the water is not deep, there are no rapids, and if you run out of groceries you can always cook up a duck or a swan (if you have guests in particular).

    I would make sure I had central heating as well as a nice fire. I have lived on a caravan for a while now and I am quite sufficient. I would buy a boat and move. I mean why wouldn't I? A good composting toilet is the answer for waste disposal because one can simple dump the compost created onto riverside plants. it is good for them as is the urine for some plants. Loneliness wouldn't be a problem for me. I like being on my own.

      I had wondered that myself. So composting toilets are an alternative on narrowboats? Seems like it would be a good way to save water and takes up less space for the blackwater waste. They require ventilation I believe. Are they easy to retrofit on to a narrowboat?

    We lived in a house way out in the country and depended on a cistern for water and a woodstove for heat supplemented by kerosene heaters in a pinch when it got really cold. And forget anything like air conditioning. Sounds about the same except on water. None of this is a revelation to anyone who grew up in a rural area.

    Good things to think about. Another concern regarding boat ownership in general is that in most cases it is a depreciating asset. On land you can buy a home and you are making money just by sitting on the couch surfing the web since your asset : ) is in most cases appreciating in value. Boat ownership seems to be more of a lifestyle choice, fulfilling a dream, maybe a break from the mundane for a while. If a person has 10-40,000 that is a good downpayment on land/home, and if the boat bug continues to bite, you could rent out your home and buy a boat with frugal living savings in a few short years.

    • @ZacharyDenman
      @ZacharyDenman  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for watching, yes i suppose your right, but the with house prices sky high, what do the next generations have? Alan will be going into costings in future videos and discussing this. A house is not really asset, its still a floating market and can change at anytime. We have been through recessions before and its the economies always fluctuate overtime. Isn't life all about the life we choose? life is about experience, not money.

      Most people buying narrow boats in London right now are doing so as they cannot afford to rent their own home and are tired of sharing ...The property markets are so out of control ,and so out of reach of normal working people who can only afford to rent, which is dead investment...

    Aren't the boats insulated? I have seen videos where the boats had a spray foam for insulation. What about insulated double pane window? I can see where the bottom of the boat would be a heat sink and the top of the boat would get hot enough to fry food on but there must be solutions. Solar panels seem to cover much of the tops of boats now. An awning or screen should be available to shade the top.

      Why are you shouting? To hide your catastrophically bad rhetoric and uselessness of your comment? Ok, I guess we all got it.

    The question that's most interesting to me is how narrow boaters make their money!? Do they all have jobs, like beeing an author, so it doesn't matter where they are? Or do they just have the money in bank to retire early :D

    • @ZacharyDenman
      @ZacharyDenman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      not sure you could work an office job and live on a boat, but yes if you create an income yourself, its alot easier. I will be making videos on this in the future

      Personally... I cruise from March to September and work in the Winter to save up the funds for the next Summer's cruising. I have an online mooring and in the Winter I work through an agency as an HGV driver, work is plentiful in the East Midlands where I'm based.

      Hi Roger, many thanks, you can search Alan Denman on google to see his films/books and he is in the process of setting up his website at the moment. Which he will have everything on. All the best.

    Cannot really agree with what you say. I have lived on my boat 3 years and thoroughly enjoy both Winter and Summer with my onboard heating and cooling systems. Seem to me you’re trying to stop more people joining our community lol

      Patricia Brooks...I don't tie my laces! I tie them and then kinda knot the ends closest to the shoe to be able to just slip them on or I prefer boots really...You just get creative is what I'm saying. 😋😎👍
