    I'm still using a Frister Rossman Cub 4! My mother was a designer, dressmaker and costumier and used this machine for most of her career (including carrying it with her on jobs - yes, she must have had muscles under her linen shirts because it kills me). I learned to sew on it, inherited it from her, and I've never had any reason to upgrade to a different electric machine. Brilliant little workhorse. So funny to see someone else using 'my' machine!

      Hi! I recently got this machine but I have no idea how to thread it up. Do you know where you pull the thread that comes up from the bobbin in the bobbin case? Not sure if that makes sense but any help would be appreciated x

    • @NitNoise
      @NitNoise 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to love it but, after having it serviced, it started getting unthreaded all the time, the bottom thread gets all tangled too and I really can't recall my sewing being so frustrating before. Have you ever encountered any of these issues by any chance? I don't want to do false accusations, but I just want to sort this out. :'(

    • @AM-xo7lr
      @AM-xo7lr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NitNoise Oh hey, how annoying! Firstly, if these problems only appeared after having it serviced, it sounds like the problem is with the servicing rather than the machine. The machine is straightforward and if none of the components is actually broken then the problem must be to do with the way it is set up... I have encountered lower thread snarling, but not just on this machine. The good news is that it should be easy enough to sort out: You can remove the whole shuttle assembly, dust out fluff if needed, and put it all back, making sure everything is securely in place - the manual shows how. I've definitely had a loose shuttle hook before because the plate and peg holding it in place weren't quite set right. Then I would make adjustments to the lower thread tension using the tiny screw on the bobbin case - usual rule: lefty loosey, righty tighty 😆 until the bottom thread in a test seam doesn't seem too tight or loose, then adjust the top tension until the stitches are perfectly balanced, with no sign of upper thread at the bottom of the fabric or lower thread at the top (top and bottom threads of different colours helps to check this). When the upper and lower tension are in perfect balance for the fabric you are using, the upper thread doesn't flip out of the needle so often. I'm a freak for precise seam beginnings and endings, though, so I tend make sure I have long trailing threads and use the side-wheel to manually insert the needle into the fabric before I begin a seam - that way it can't escape. I'm making a dress for a client right now that is made from super light, floaty viscose, but because I made some test seams and set all the tensions to be perfectly in balance, it has sewn up a dream with no seam stabiliser needed. Hope I'm not teaching my grandma to suck eggs here, but these procedures have always worked for me.

    • @AM-xo7lr
      @AM-xo7lr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ellenabetson9817 Haha, yes! Place the bobbin in its case and into the shuttle with a long thread trailing towards you. Then hold down the top thread from the needle with your left hand anywhere to the left of the presser foot. With your right hand, move the manual side-wheel towards you through one complete cycle of needle down-and-up. A little tug on the thread held down by your left hand will pull up a loop from the bobbin, which you just pull through completely to the left with anything pointy you have to hand - the little screwdriver for the machine or a chopstick would do. That leaves you with the two threads neatly out of the way to the left and you're ready to start sewing. I like to lower the needle manually using the side wheel at the beginning of a seam to anchor it and stop it unthreading the needle. If you want to create a temporary email address that can go in the comments here, I will happily send you a pdf version of the manual, which explains the parts, workings and different functions of this machine.

    I have a Frister Rossmann Cub 7 sewing machine. I bought it off an old lady over 20 years ago. I am not a sewer, more knitting and crochet, I have used it for the first time today and I can't believe how easy and simple it is. I will definitely use it more often now. Thank you for your tutorial on threading it. Super easy to do, I might actually enjoy sewing now.

    I purchased my Frister Rossman in 1977. I packed it around the world with me (using a power converts). I have settled in Canada and have a special power converts for it. To my surprise my Son liked to tailor his own cloths and asked for my machine. I was so pleased to find your video on how to use it. The manual is long gone and I would love to see a video on how to correctly oil the machine based on the manual. Thank you for your video.

    Wow. So interesting. I had never heard of that manufacturer and I googled it. It turns out that the company produced sewing machines since 1865 in Berlin - Kreuzberg. I am from Berlin and I work in Kreuzberg. That so amazing! I never knew there had been such a large sewing machine factory here.
    I found out online that the company was also known for making type writers and bicylces up until after WWI. The company was liquidated in 1929. The licences had been already sold to Gritzner in 1925. The brand name was sold to the UK in 1945. So I guess there were no sewing machines under that name produced in germany since 1925? No wonder I had never heard of it. There isnt even a german Wikipedia page! But I found some information on another website about the history of the economy.

    Hi, my back tension guide on my cub 3 has unwound itself and fallen off. I usually use my husqvarna so I'm not as familiar with the cub machine and it didnt have s manual. I wondered whether there was an extended table for it but figured at its age it would be hard to get. I didnt realise you could use the case for the extra bits to extend it or that the side piece folded out. So although I'm still not sure how to put the guide back together I have learnt something about the machine. Thanks very much❤.

    I have a F-R cub 4 which was given to me as a graduation present in 1977! I have used it on and off over the years and got it out recently to make Covid-19 face masks for the family. As always it was working fine. After finishing the masks, I left it out thinking that I would complete a few more sewing jobs during the lockdown. To my surprise I was woken in the middle of the night to the sound of my cub 4 running at maximum speed! I think something has gone wrong in the foot pedal. The components are more than 40 years old so I guess some resistor or capacitor has blown, although why it did this in the night some days after its last use is not clear. No sign of obvious damage either inside or out. So when using these vintage machines unplug after use!
    I found your post when searching for solution to the foot pedal problem for this machine. The machine itself is great and it would be a shame to dump it. Fortunately from another video it does seem possible to have a modern electronic one fitted so hopefully once the shops are open again I can get it repaired.
    (I actually do have a sewing shop that does repairs in my uk town!).
    It is nice to know that somebody else still uses this lovely old machine! Thanks for the video!

    • @NitNoise
      @NitNoise 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That happen to me too! It's the capacitor. I removed that little bit (it looks like a tiny cylinder) from my pedal and it went back to normal. :)
      Please make sure you contact an engineer to guide you on that, or send it away to be done by an expert. Any sewing machine repair shop would be able to get it done in 5 minutes. Look for Dave Dong on Facebook! He's absolutely brilliant.

    Nice! i have a VSM, a Dorina excellent-I super-nutzstich f. This is what's written on it, made in Germany and as heavy as it can get. I can't find any information on this machine online :( It has 7 stitches with 5 of them stretch. It can use double needle, and i prefer to thread it through the left needle hook not through the right one. The person who i got it from took good care of it as its manual is in good condition (albeit, all in German) and came with a working bulb, extra needles, extra pressing feet, 3 metal bobbins, and screwdriver. Also its plastic carry case. I replaced it with a dust cover, but i keep the carry case ;p
    I use it more than my modern machine (still German one), but winding the bobbin and the buttonhole stitch (on the vintage one) are plain bad. i need to use my modern machine for these functions. My modern one is also TOO fast and "eats" thin fabrics. i should probably buy at least 1 straight stitch plate like you have.

    Love the vintage machines. I've tried to like the new ones but I can't bring myself to. My oldest is from 1948 and my newest is from 1966. All Singers. I'm asked why I prefer them and besides making the perfect straight stitch, I can fix them should something happen. I get teased by my sewing friends for having and using them until they see the stitch they make or have to grovel and ask to borrow one because theirs quite working.

      @@ellenabetson9817 Once you have threaded the machine on the top, hold the end of the thread to the back of the foot and manually turn the end wheel slowly (always towards you) and the top thread will complete the cycle and pick up the bottom thread. I don't believe this machine came with a buttonhole "foot", rather what is shown in the picture is a little plastic guide that you placed beneath the zigzag foot, and it came in a few different sizes.

    That phone number is an English number and must be from sometime after 1996ish. Because at that time in the UK a 1 was added after the 0 that began all phone numbers.
    The styling of the machine looks late 1970s so I'm guessing that English shop sold it second hand.

    My friend has lent me her frister rossman cub 4 sewing machine to see how I get on before I buy my own sewing machine but unfortunately it doesn't have the instruction manual with it. Could you share how to raise the bobbin thread? I cant figure it out! Thanks so much!

      Hi! Once you get the bobbin into the bobbin slot under the machine, you make sure you have about 4" of thread pulled (bobbin thread). When you thread the upper thread and get to the needle make sure to have 4" of thread or more pulled towards the back of the machine. Lower the threaded needle down and up (this is one turn of the handwheel - be sure to be turning it the correct way - towards the back of the machine is reverse, you want to to be turning so its going forward stitch). That should pick up the thread if the bobbin thread has been placed in the slot correctly. Hope this helps for now - I will try to do a quick video on it this weekend. Good luck and enjoy!

    I have this same sewing machine, but its name is Privilege-Compact model 930, and the user manual is not in English like the one you have, but it is in German, and I do not know the German language, so if you could tell me how I can get the English manual I would be grateful

    Hi, yes i got mine from a Charity shop but . Its a Cub 4 (FC - 10) I think..but i don't know how to thread it. Slightly different from yours here. Can someone help please as a i can't wait to test it. The other issue is that the dirt has almost rusted and stuck underneath the bobbin case from not being used. Any suggestions in what to clean it with?

      Soak it with 3 in one oil for a day or two - its great for cleaning up but dont use it for maintenance.

      I have had a Cub 7 since the late 1970's and you pull the pull out the large wheel at the right end of the machine to disengage the shuttle. Any other queries, please shout.

    Cool vid of the Cub: ) Have you tried the even cuter Elna Lotus compact portable? Weighs 13lbs or so.
    The Singer Genie/Starlet is also similar & very cool: )

      Probably not, they tend to have different ones unless you get from another Cub.

    Hi! I've had this machine for 7 years now, but after getting it services it has started unthreading way TOO often. Is it possible they touched something so that the top metal bit goes too vertical and this causes the thread to slip out? It's utterly frustrating. :'(

    • @SaturdayNightStitch
      @SaturdayNightStitch  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry to hear you are having problems especially after getting it serviced. Might be worth asking them to have another go? Vintage machines are resilient and can usually be fixed with the right knowhow.

      When does it unthread? Is it at the start of your sewing or during your stitching line?

    I am looking to buy another machine that will sew leather/vinyl/canvas easily. Would this particular model sew heavier materials easily? Thanks.

    • @SaturdayNightStitch
      @SaturdayNightStitch  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! I wouldn't recommend this one for heavier weight fabrics - it wasn't designed for that. If you want to sew with the materials you mentioned you need something like a Singer 201k or 401G.

      They were marketed as heavy-duty compact machines. I guy on TH-cam has one on his yacht and uses to repair his sails ⛵️ its the reason it came with a leather foot

    I have a Cub 4 purchased in UK 50 years ago. It still works perfectly. I recently looked through all the accessories that came with it and found the needle threader (small grey piece of plastic). Unfortunately the manual does not tell me how to use it. I am now at the age where I could really use some help threading the needle. Anyone here know how to use it?
