Wow. You know, I actually like the Reslo by itself the best among the guitar tones. The 609, I found, had an unpleasant, almost "boxy" treble end; the Reslo was a LOT smoother and more natural sounding. BTW, myself personally? I come from a filmmaking background and am more familiar with the sound of mics recording voice, like in your voiceover here, so I actually appreciate that you used it for your voiceover; it gave me a better idea of the sound of the mic overall. VERY impressive for a mic that's somewhere in the vicinity of 50 years old. Impressive for a mic PERIOD, actually. They just don't make stuff that solid and long lasting today. ;)
One of my biggest issues with your distorted guitar recordings has always been that they have sounded thin to me. I dare say this ribbon mic definitely added much needed warmth and depth to the sound, and the ribbon mic's warmth with the treble-heavy 609 actually sounded damn good. Just offering my perspective. Cheers from Texas!
+The_BlueJay I preferred the reslo on it's own, and I'm using old cheap in-ear phones that I know make everything else way too muddy, but the mixed sound was too tinny for my liking, and the 609 on its own was just horrific. It sounded like wasp in an empty beer can. I've always found metal guitar sounds too thin and weak. I really think metal guitarists have lost the high end from their hearing. Crank the damn mids, God damn it! Not sure how it all sounded through decent headphones, but right now I think the reslo on its own gave a perfect metal sound
Meanwhile, some manufacturer just looked at this, saw the Bionicle gear jig, then looked at their expensive machine tha does the same job, and faepalmed
Jordan Payne lmfao I actually use this method with 2 gears years ago on a home made Ribbon Mic lol. I noticed the shape of the foil was based on equal distsnces so I looked at a "How it's made Ribbon Mics" and it shows the machine lmfao.
Back in 58 to 63 I used to remove the thick felt filters just leaving the covers filtered. Then fit a new ribbon available then. The stock Tx was OK. Mic was a lot more responsive then with good presence.
I didn't expect this to be such a cool video. I do think that you got the best sound when blending the mics. You got the high end from the ribbon and the mids and bottom from the sennheiser. Didn't like any of them alone, but blended they were lovely.
Thank you! Just did my first ribbon replacement and this video helped a lot! Was wondering why it was super bass heavy after first go and just needed a bit more slack.
Excellent... i just found one of these in my folks attic... 2 questions - What is the XLR adapter you're using? and are you using a preamp? I head these old Reslo's have a low impedance and need a preamp to bring them up to modern levels?? Relative noob so thanks for the help!
Really great work and video! Kudos for taking this one on! Have you ever tried the 1.8micron weights? I think the response is flatter but much harder to mount...
HI Colin, great video! May I ask where you got the replacement ribbon from? Is it better to get a 1.8u Micron or the or 2.5u Micron as you are using. I have the exact same Reslo Mic and need to replace the ribbon.
Pretty damn cool however I would have thought that if breathing into it to harshly could damage the ribbon mic, then a guitar cab would have made mincemeat of it. On another note what happened to that new bloodbound you were building? The pictures on facebook were looking amazing.
2.5 microns is the durable ribbon density but the more responsive weight it 1.8 microns...just much harder to mount and less forgiving to SPLs etc. I think most of the old ribbons were lighter, these days people want durability over frequency response...but any ribbon, well almost, is preferable in my book...
I saw those gears and immediately thought "Holy shit I forgot about K'Nex and their usefulness! I must find my old toys", But seriously is there anything you can't fix? That aluminum must've been a bitch to want to handle.
You want as little mass on the ribbon as possible. Increasing the mass in any way adds to the inertia of the ribbon, reducing its effectiveness as a microphone. In short, it would be a really bad idea.
Gosh!!!!! The Sennheiser 609 sounds horrible with distortion, such an harsh and terrible microphone. The cheap plastic capsule sounds so bad. the e906 is a much better microphone. Reslo sounds really nice. THanks for the video

that was awesome colin, ahh the beauty of oldschool gear, and being able to fix it. cheers from victoria canada!

wow, that reslo sounds absolutely amazing :o I want one!
The two microphones in combo sound fantastic!
I much preferred the 609 over the Reslo for cleans, but the Reslo schooled the 609 on overdrive, very interesting.

the reslo sounds good - no brittle high end - quite an eye opener - appreciated
Gotta say I really like the thrash riffs using both mics mixed together. That's a really nice sound.
The Reslo sounded great... I want one!!
That is nice low end sound without useless fizziness. Congrats with new gear!
I think they sound really great together most of the time.

Wow that ribbon mic sounds awesome! I want one now lol

Holy shit, that lego jig is ingenious
Excellent and cut down video . Good tips.
Holy shit, dude!!
That mic sounds so friggin' good!!
That reslo ,was awesome
MAN that older equipment has a nice large sound. excellent.
The question is Colin, will it ever shred?
wow nice work man

To record a microphone you need a preamp. Assuming you want to record on a PC, look at the UMC202HD.
you did a great job, to be the very first time as you said
damn that thing sounds fucking great!
That would stress me out trying to work with the foil. Nice job!
Holy shit this sounds so awesome.
Really great work and video! Kudos for taking this one on!

Many thanks for an informative video - I want to restore my own Reslo RB which has a torn ribbon. What width of ribbon did you use?
HI Colin, great video! May I ask where you got the replacement ribbon from? Is it better to get a 1.8u Micron or the or 2.5u Micron as you are using. I have the exact same Reslo Mic and need to replace the ribbon.
Hi Giles, I also want to repair the same mic. Did you have any luck finding the silver paper? Cheers
Salute from Chile!
I would like to listen to voices through. Speaking ones and singing ones
What kind of beanies do you wear man? Have long hair as well and can't fine one that fits quite right. Great job with the repair as well man!
It would be really interesting to see the frequency response! Have you done one?
Thats the thinnnest sound I've ever heard out fo a Rezlo - usually very warm
very interesting. great vid!
Found a similar reslosound mic recently, got me looking back at your video!
Wondering how much you picked it up for originally?
Nice job! How do you adjust the tension? Just pull it tight?
How will we ever discover if it shreds?!
Pretty damn cool however I would have thought that if breathing into it to harshly could damage the ribbon mic, then a guitar cab would have made mincemeat of it. On another note what happened to that new bloodbound you were building? The pictures on facebook were looking amazing.
Air is much more dense than sound waves
+Jarryd Mahabir that makes sense actually. Cheers
guitar19971 awesome man

I wonder if the sound would change if you experiment with the thickness of the ribbon, or the material, eg. gold, silver or copper leaf.
Yes, I believe the thicker the foil, the less treble it will pick up due to the mass of the foil.
Where can I find two good plastic gears to let the ribbon go through?
man, if I wasn't DI-ing in the first place I'd consider one of those before an SM57
prefer the reslosound mic with guitar ;)
coooooool !
Cool video....the "sexties" were indeed an era of many fine audio and cultural experiments...;)
that mic has a great sound D:
I saw those gears and immediately thought "Holy shit I forgot about K'Nex and their usefulness! I must find my old toys", But seriously is there anything you can't fix? That aluminum must've been a bitch to want to handle.
Hey wasn't the first riff house of the rising sun? Just asking lol I'm actually almost certain it is
+xavier morales Yes.
What if you were to increase the width of the aluminium strip and density of it, By folding the it over a few times ??
You want as little mass on the ribbon as possible. Increasing the mass in any way adds to the inertia of the ribbon, reducing its effectiveness as a microphone.
In short, it would be a really bad idea.
no worries,
+CSGuitars yes i read this in your accent
Is it bad that I started singing the song while you were playing the clean bit?
Reslo sounds much better.
Out of interest did you use this mic with the Lo z matching transformer? What did you use for gain/pre ;)
The Reslo is better, because of the Warmth it provides :-D
Hi there, could you repair my Reslo Mic?
I have two of these mikes,in need of ribbon, where did you obtain the foil?
Gosh!!!!! The Sennheiser 609 sounds horrible with distortion, such an harsh and terrible microphone. The cheap plastic capsule sounds so bad. the e906 is a much better microphone. Reslo sounds really nice. THanks for the video
This channel is criminally underviewed.
Should not hang ribbons straight on the sound source... At least 1 meter away from the sorce.
Where did you get the micron foil from? cheers
your socks match the tape on your wah....perfect
Is that the 30/50 microphone?
Ribbon rulez ;)
i actually quite like the buzzing but that's just me being me
Wow, this sounds like the best microphone to handle shitty amps\poor dialing.
Great video! I just shoot one on my 1955 RCA BK5B that I found in a box from my uncle!! Check it out! @

it's a shame the guitar tone is so shit
Colin hi mate, just picked up a ribbon mic, wondering where I can order the foil sheet from? Cheers
