Every Sunday, my friend's dad would blast this song on the old-fashioned record player they owned. I still miss her dad - he was one of the good guys.
I blast it on my old school console stereo every now and then.
I remember trying to dance 💃 😊😂 and I did it!
@@blueheronprairie I have a friend who said she hated this song because trying to Hully Gully to it for 17 minutes was hard. I asked, "wtf is Hully Gully?"
@dannylgriffin it's a funny memory I think we would take a break and or give up dancing 💃 😅 🤔 My memory is funny like that! Those were the good old days 😆 🤣 😂
R.I.P. Doug Ingle Sept.9,1945 to May 24,2024. Organist, Lead Singer & Songwriter. Last surviving member of the Classic 1967-1969 lineup. Thanks for the music 🎹🎵.
Classic that will live forever!
Amen! What an iconic group and song
Rest in peace Doug, your song will live on forever ❤
I thought out 2:08 of nowhere to listen to this, and then I saw this post. My mind is blown.
Another legend has passed away. But fortunately, today we have so many opportunities to celebrate their legacy. RIP Doug Ingle and all the other members.
I'm 79. Even today when I listen to IN A GADDA DA VIDA my body and mind go back to 1968. My generation was very lucky and not just for music.
Bought a 66 GTO in high school back in 85, found two eight tracks in the car Styx and Iron Butterfly.
certainly who lived the late 60's and 70's lived the best generation of music, too bad right around that phase my country lived it's worst era, military dictatorship that set the country in a backwards spiral...
Absolutely we were so lucky!!!
I hear you. Just 78 here. This is head music.
I am from Chile, a distant country in South America where we love rock. My dad made me listen to this song when I was 15. Today, at almost 50 years old, I deeply thank him.
I am now 74 and German, I also heard the song in the 60s and learned to love it. And it still grabs me when I hear it. I made my son promise that it would be played at my funeral. Loud, very loud
Bis 2047 ist noch ein wenig Zeit ...
R u still around?? Can i come 2 your funeral?? Looks like it is goin 2 b a riot!!❤😂
Best drum solo ever!! Best song forever!!

If I have a funeral I want "Ramble On" by Led Zeppelin played
I'm 65 years old. Heard this on the radio in 1968, blew me away. Inspired me to learn guitar. The lead guitar player, Erik Brann is playing a Mosrite Ventures guitar. At the time, you could order a Mosrite guitar off the back of a Ventures album. My parents refused. Instead, they took me down to the local music store ....I came home with Gibson SG and a sworn promise to
them and myself that I would never give it up. I learned this song in 1968 when I was 12 years old. Wasn't very good.....but I got better......... and still play it ( on the SG ) to this very day....
Awesome story man
I was getting into guitar but I was living with my mom, who had certain burdens. Long story short I had to sell all my stuff, including my guitars, because she enjoyed drugs too much and didn't know how to take care of her son. I live with my Girlfriend and my mother is halfway across the country smoking God knows what now.
Love this! Back when families had morals and actually took time to be family.
Those are the kind of stories that when you are reading it you can imagine the entire scene on your head. Great story man!
I wish my life was less boring so I had cool stories like that to tell.
My dad showed me this song when I was a wee gal, I still remember a time he played this, my mum was gone & had it on high volume, he was dancing & vibing & I just remember being so grateful for life & him. He passed away today, 5 years ago. He was my bestest friend, & this song always warms my heart🖤
True....
My mama ❤️✝️ passed away 5years ago so presçious
Christ 🙏 bless you and your family love you

He passed but he is not away. You will see him again someday. But it will take patience. And possibly a long search in the next plane of existence.
Sorry for your loss, I have a similar memory with my dad.
My mom is my best friend and getting up there in age. Sometimes it's important to remind ourselves that our loved ones won't always be there and to appreciate the time we have with them while we can. Especially for those who are lucky enough to still have our loved ones with us today. =)
I am 70, and very much still love this song. The drum solo is a classic.
My brother played this with his band back in the day out in the back yard by the garage. Police got called on us. We rocked out til then!!!
My then boyfriend, Robbie Wiggins, hated playing that at country dives. Always requested before closing.
Mine too !!!😂
I was 14 then....now I'm 64.....wow!!...I close my eyes, listen to the music..... and I feel like yesterday.....but I'm old now...:-(

I've always LOVED how the drums roll through your head. I'm 70 now and still love it, the louder the better. Once a Hippie Always a Hippie.

Yes. It WAS musical. In a way melodic. I often feel like I could sing it.
I'm the same age as you. Still great music
Once a hippy always a hippy. Back in the ninety's, Iron Butterfly was at Santa Cruz Boardwalk playing. No charge! I was shocked seeing so many people still living the hippy lifestyle. Long hair, headbands, tie dye, leather. It was fantastic. Still have my satin jacket with Iron Maiden blazing across the back. Would love to live that hippy lifestyle of the sixties again.
This one always takes me back. Once a hippy always a hippy.
@@darkeststar3640 WOW, that would have been a fantastic day and how wonderful to have your jacket too. I think there's a lot of good things about being a Hippie with the Peace, Love n Care of ALL people , creation , respect and Live and let Live . I just wish that the rest of the world caught on to this simple attitude as things would be so different. Anyways, thank you very much for your reply. It was nice to hear from you ☺

I'm 70. Saw the Iron Butterfly in Boston in 1970. In a Gadda Da Vida is one of the greatest rock songs ever. Will never forget that night.

I'm from 1948. (Italy) I bought this album when I still didn't have the money to buy a record player. I had heard it on the radio in a program hosted by Renzo Arbore. It was an amazing revelation because I felt that music was turning into something that would appeal to twenty year olds like me. The drum solo was and is something hypnotic and enthralling. I was sorry when I listened that it was about to end. I wanted it to last at least twice as long. Beautiful album of a generation that is now disappearing.

The bass solo, the guitar solo, the drum solo. And the organ solo. Wow!

Left out the bass solo .opps

We talked about what going to do then he asked me what i wanted to hear while they knocking me out .His way of trying to keep me calm i suppose . I told him In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida and thats what i was listening to and i went out . I worked several of their concerts in 1968, as a sound tech and roadie for an audio and lighting promoter. It was mezmerizing to watch Ron Bushy play this drum solo at every gig. Fantastic drummer. And Erik brann's guitar was just wild.
Cool story. My older brother Robert had an Electronics/ instrument repair shop in downtown Atlanta in the early 70s and he did. Set up the Audio for The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd opened the show. My brother said Skynyrd blew the Allmans off the stage. Gregg Allman fell off a bar stool and banged his head on the stage.( he was apparently pretty stoned?) I am confident Skynyrd probably signed a record contract after that concert debut.

When I heard this in 1969 I asked Smitty, my chorus teacher, and music director at my high school if I could take the drum kit home for the summer. Having only played a snare in junior high I had never played a kit and didn't know the differences but I looked at the images on my album cover and added a second floor Tom and a second Bass Tom. It took me all summer, much to my grandmas immense patience, she never complained once, I learned it. Beat for beat. Note for note. In the fall I'm back in the band room with the chorus. Having got there early for the 6:00pm practice of the Christmas pageant, I noticed someone banging on the jazz kit in the office. About ten or so students were standing around as he tried to improve a solo but got embarrassed at the attention and quit. I finally got a chance and knew what I was going to do. I scrounged the two Toms and rearranged the kit since I'm a southpaw. Most of the kids had gone back into the band room by the time I finished the setup which helped my nerves a lot. I was scared but I began the solo with eyes shut, just as I had memorized it. Without the music I had a minor glitch transforming from the main solo to the second solo but it worked, and besides, we could hear the music in our heads. I don't remember when it was that I looked up, I think it was half into the second solo, and saw how many of my fellow students were crammed into the tiny office and Smitty off to the side smiling even though it was past 6pm. For a small school we had what seamed like half the student body in Chorus, about 150 students and as I walked back into the band room they all applauded. I never became a drummer and turned down the scholarship I was awarded for my baritone voice. All I have is that memory of one night in 1969.
Thank you for sharing your one night with us. 😎❤🎶
Awesome. Great story! I have played that tune in my head for years. I'm 65 and still have the original 8 track tape !!! Cruising Friday and Saturday night with my best High school pal my hotrod '66 Fairlane. Really takes me back ! Iron Butterfly theme and Flowers and Beads are also classics!
I taught myself the organ parts and played the bass line on the pedals it was 1969 I will be turning 66 soon.
I still remember hearing it live in the Oregon State Coliseum in 1969. And while I haven't smoked weed since 1972, I just discovered that I still get flashbacks.
Thank you
pauloget for posting this.
Awesome story. Loved every word of it.
We were at a party in Tangier, Morocco, in 1969. This was playing when I (American) asked my then girlfriend (Moroccan) to marry me. We have been married for over 53 years and this has always been "our song".
Great song iwas 12 when came out😊
Congrats!
Groovey
you lucky
AMAZING YOU TWO!!!!
Unfortunately no one is making music like this anymore. It is mindblowing. It takes you to another plane of existence. it is in my Top Ten songs of all Time.
Thank goodness
@@philipbeaman5697nah nah nah fam i wanna see how the genre would have kept going without Tales from Topographic Oceans
Absolutely one of my favorites of all time!
@@philipbeaman5697 These days the "music" sounds like all one mindless song written to a formula and the industry is controlled by a very few thugs.
To many soy boys these days all there songs are depressing or so cringe that you feel mental after listening to it. Just my two cents 🤷♂️
I was ten years old but I understood very well this song and I loved it so much!!!
My Dad bought me the vinyl.
It was the best gift in my life!!!!
Producer: How many solos do you want in your song?
Iron Butterfly: Yes.
Douglas Rampazo bwaaaaahaaaa.
Producer: You know theres going to be many people trying to replicate your solos for this song try to make it easy for the kids
Iron Butterfly: The 2 minute version will do...
If you notice Edgar winter did that same thing in Frankenstein
ahahahaha xD
OVER 9000
I'm 68, and I never, and I mean never get tired of this tune. I have to see if I can buy the DVD for this album. This is the first drum solo I tried to master after my first kit. That and a few Gene Kruppa solos.
I also never get tired of good old music and I don't think that I ever will!
I never get tired too. Never!
35 and love this song
I am 22 years old and I never get tired of these 17 minutes ;)
So did ya master it???
Literally blows my mind after all these years listening to this song ❤takes you to a place of being not in control. Just literally letting your self go and be totally FREE ❤. Miss those days. Nice to revisit occasionally. Thanks ❤
Omg this song is so trippy. Love it. My Mom would play this while we were cleaning the house. And she played it LOUD. 😂
Lol 😅😮
Loud is the only way to listen to it 😂
as an adult ive finally realized thru experimentation that there's no need to clean the house, I havent ever other than individual messes, all is fine.
...and I guess that when it finished, she was done :-) BTW. As a teenager/student in the 90'ies I set the alarm to 2 am to record this tune on the rebroadcast. Always been satisfied with my taste in music.
I saw them in concert. AWESOME
Has to be one of the greatest Acid Rock hits ever recorded, with the greatest drum and organ solos of all time. I'm in my 70s and still come back to listen to this time and again. It was the first CD I ever purchased - but the new PC doesn't have a disc player. 😞 So, I listen here .... repeatedly!
If you listen to this on headphones, in the central part of the drum solo where it seems to fade out and come back, it's actually been engineered to sound as if it's going AROUND you, which is mind-blowing. Totally awesome, and IMHO, one of the best drum solos of all time. Terry Bozzio may be a great percussionist, but I've not yet seen him match this musicality in his performances. I also love classical music, and the organ work is so reminiscent of the great organists of the Boroque and Classical periods ......
Just buy a Laptop with a Disc drive or buy a PS3 they play dvds
Do you have a DVD or Blu-Ray player? Most of those will play CDs as well.
One might recommend looking for an external disc/optical drive. They are generally pretty cheap, and they just plug into a USB port.
producer: how many solos you gonna have in your song?
iron butterfly: yes
All of them
In 1969 in Fairfield CT as young teen someone blasted this on loud speakers in hilltop area above us which was coolest thing ever and became die hard fan of IRON BUTTERFLY because was familiar with them already
Oh boy, there must be some major jamming sessions up stairs now. The Gang is together again. Thanks Doug!
"Wait a minute, this sounds like rock and or roll."
like a accordion
Wait a minute, this sounds like the same comment for the billionth time
Te faltó decir esquizofrénico
To ANYONE using this phrase...
That cliche has been around since the mid-1950s.
@gayboyzig I outgrew that 40+ years ago.
My dad named his boat aggadadavida. He died last year so listening to this song brings me back to the San Juan's with old salt sailors and my pops with a drink in his hand at the wheel. I miss you old man.
Cool...his spirit is in the mix ✌
Ohh that's realy nice to here, I cult see mee I that position, stand by the weel and play it out lout, on a big loutspeaker set, it vil be pjure happiness ,, I'm 65 and love it steel. 😂
What a cool dad 😂
I bet he loved being asked where he is, was, or will be if the answer was the boat. Of course he's someone's dad.
@@TheIronSavior oh yeah. He was a fucking badass

60 years or so ago I listened intensely to this song and went out into a great field and met my first lover in the grass. Thank you for your inspiration.

I saw Iron Butterfly in 1969 in Houston; great concert on a revolving stage. I was in 10 th grade 15ish. I fell in love with this band when I heard their first album Heavy. Love the lead guitar.
WOW
The song is a force of nature. The drums alone are just awesome.
Oui a 73 ans à Paris je ne peux que me refugier dans le souvenir de ces groupes GENIAUX,TOUS .Oui les annees 70 il ft les avoir vecues ❤❤❤

I was born in 67 I jammed to this in my teens 15 years later. I'm jamming to this in my late 50s ❤🎉 same vibe ❤
Can't believe it's a 1968 song, it's been more than 50 years and it still sounds amazing, way better than most songs produced today!
I'm about to have a son, and for sure I'll show him this one and many more. Just hope he knows to enjoy this good part of life, which is listening to good music!

Whoever tuned that drum kit deserves a medal. Not to mention the engineers who mic'ed, mixed, and recorded it so cleanly.
Old school hippie techs man. Some of the best sound people theres ever been from what ive read. So good you could hear a fly buzz on stage lol
@@jtt4956 Yeah, I was born in the early 80s, after music started its early phases of getting lazy w/ electronic instruments. It has just been downhill from there. Thankful I came from a very musical family, that listened to this stuff and got me into it! I'm a hobbyist in music production and learned a lot from reading about old techniques, but still can't come close to this sound quality, on modern gear. Cheers.

You're not wrong, statikreg. The drums are being played in an almost tribal rhythm. And everything sounds so clean. The beauty of analog. Real guys playing real instruments live. Man am *I* old but I am so glad.
@@jtt4956 Yes!! The way they recorded "Kashmir" with the mics setup in the stairway across from Bonham's drums and setup the echo. Most drummers play it as as two kicks, but it's really the echo...so awesome!!
One of the best songs I’ve ever heard . Pure talent right there .
Musicians had actually talent back in these days.
Rest in power Doug. You will always live on through your music. Thank you for all your music and this absolute masterpiece.
Oh, this breaks my heart.
R.I.P. Ron Bushy. You will be remembered.
I have been a drummer for 50 years, and Ron's solo in "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida" is the ONLY drum solo that I have ever liked (from anyone)!
Well done, Ron.
That entire song is just the epitome of 1960's psychedelic music.
Not even Bakers stuff?
This is #1 in solos but Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock also rules.Carl Palmer also a favorite. But the drums on this talk to you and no one ever did before or since then.
I'll never forget THIS song. I had a boyfriend that played this on the drums. What a great drum solo on here!! Those were the days. To think I'm 64 and still alive to talk about the " OLDEN" days.
Peaches1691 64 is just the beiggining
Peaches1691 yeah I remember those olden days too. I'm sixty myself. Those were great days.
Me to Bro!!
I like playing the drums too and the piano......
Ditto peaches. don't ever let go! I'm 65 in a month and remember this all too well. The past is what keeps us alive, sorry to say. The youth of today will never experience what we did and I'm so sorry for that. Evolution......
Sad to hear about the passing of Ron Bushy, his drum solo In A Gadda Da Vida became iconic, the next legendary drummer lost in one week! I was lucky to see Iron Butterfly + The Rolling Stones live at the Palm Beach Pop Festival in November 1969, unforgettable. R.I.P.
I was 8 years old when this song came out and it always brings back great memories. IN A GADDA DAVIDA One of Rock's greatest masterpieces! R.I.P. Doug Ingle and members of the original Iron Butterfly.
I was about to turn 9 when I bugged my Dad to let me buy this LP, and I still own the same one!
60 years and it STILL ROCKS!!

I was 13 and still have the same album and the CD
My thirty year old children found my album collection recently and we broke out my old stereo preamp, tube amp, spec speakers, and turntable. Granted they crackled a bit however once this album was hit with a needle my children's life changed. One of my sons is a recording engineer and was amazed at the quality of a this recording.
Joseph Moreno It's good old Hi-fi equipment, of course it sounds great!
im 28 ive loved this song for quite some yrs now
First platinum record awarded after 52 weeks on the top of the charts
I took my daughter to lunch and the long version of IN A GADDA DA VIDA came on. She was mesmerized..... late back to school, and the entire album became one of her all time faves! She still remembers experience years later!
Yeah! That's the kind of comment I want to hear on YT! Great!
I never really wanted to believe my father, this is a clear masterpiece though. I wish he was here for me to tell him that...
He knows my guy. He's with you whenever you listen to it.

Got married in 1968 and moved to Boulder. What a great time, music will never be the same. Love this song.

@@Astr-w6y Wow ... he played like a seasoned pro!! That's pure raw talent!
Listen to Winds of creation from decapitated, the oldest band member was 16, wegen they recorded this album.
One of the greatest recordings ever made.
Well, who'd we lose today? Well, today we lost Ron Bushey, original drummer for Iron Butterfly. Do we want to talk about an iconic drummer or what? He set the style & the standard for what a drum solo would be known for for all time. RIP, Ron Bushey. Your mark will never disappear.
Classic. Rest in peace. Thank you for the great music.
After 50+ years, this is still one of my top 5 songs. Wow,
Mine, too.
