- Gotham City, 2039, a federal agent is murdered and Washington's top agents are hot on the suspect's trail. The Batman, a forgotten icon from the past. Meanwhile, GCPD Detective Gordon, grandson of the former commissioner, discovers that the man they are chasing shouldn't exist at all.

Batman went from being a billionaire with a mansion, a corporate empire, bleeding edge tech, a butler and a clean cut robin.....to 100 years later wearing a party city costume, living out of an apartment, with what I assume is a former crack addict for a robin, a ramshackle shitbox bike and eating chicken out of a fridge in a tattered bathrobe.... AND HE STILL DEFEATS THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT! BECAUSE HE'S BATMAN!
My mans just pronounced Dracula as "Drakoola"

I like to think that all the different batmans in this book where just former robins who took up the mantle after the previous one died or moved on.

I love how he uses fear more directly. The whole point of the suit is to be terrifying, but the visible mouth is kind of counterproductive

in some of paul popes notes for the comic he writes that the point of the teeth is to work as a mouth guard. people don't consider that in just about all regulated professional fighting sports mouth gaurds are worn. Alot of Batmans design in this is based off of boxing gear.
The point is this is hundreds of years after any man with a normal lifespan would have died. He allows just enough information out so that everyone knows it is the same man, but not who he is and/or was. He wants people to make up stories, like he might be some sort of vampire.
Without revealing the truth. Batman has inherited the use of the Lazarus Pits.
The visible mouth is important to display bats emotions to the viewer through his teeth clenching/ smiling ect.
Batman hissing is something I never thought I'd see, but it's amazing.
I also have this theory that it's like a Batman Beyond situation where there's multiple Batmen who've held the mantle over the years. OR, if by accident or on purpose, it could've been because of the Lazarus Pit (which does explain why Gordon refers to Batman as Bruce, the real Batman's name)
at one point gordon notes everyone aging but batman does not. alluding to either lazarus pit usage or clones

There are multiple time lines where batman has fallen into a Lazarus pit. To differing effects, but one made it so that he ages 1 year for every 100 years that pass and led to his epic bromance with super man

i want to believe that this gordon is a descendant of james gordon from the 1930’s and this batman is a successor of the original batman. this would explain the long lineage and almost mythic view people have on the “bat-man”

He's got the best parts of 1930s, DKR, and Year one in it.
I especially love him intentionally being like a superstition character.

Most modern comic adaptations have it take place in an unspecified future/year. Or 50 years from “now” rule of thumb.
Batman’s first appearance was 1939 and the title of the story is “Batman year 100” it’s set in 2039, simple math will tell you that it’s set 100 years in the future of Batman’s first appearance 😭

My theory is that at some point early in his career as Batman is that Bruce when he first encountered Ra’s Al Ghul somehow found his way in the lazurus pit not fully understanding it. Also why in the Batman file Gordon noticed how Batman always looked the same and young. The idea that the role of Batman has been passed down from multiple people is cool but it just wouldn’t make any sense since Bruce Wayne is the password on the computer. Gordon being the closest ally bruce has I feel he probably confined it to him that he’s immortal

A lot of stories, especially older ones like the Year One comic or the Animated Series aren’t concerned with making Batman seem like the Unstoppable god of Death that he has become in modern iterations.
This story seemed to be going for a more down to Earth style Batman, which I personally appreciate.

Bought this a while ago. One of my favourite stories. I love how it's framed as any other night for Batman. For the audience, it looks like a world completely destroyed and beyond saving but Batman goes out every night all the same.

It's not the same batman. And the art is awful. The face is different as well as the body
it's an elseworlds story, batmen vary from writer to writer, and while it is an opinion and I can see how you wouldn't like the style due to how gritty and abstract it is, I personally really like the design of batman and pope's art style. I get why you'd feel the way you do tho

The book itself is a Meta Commentary on the franchise as a whole, hence the callbacks to previous stories, but the overall explanation is left to the reader's interpretation.
It could be Bruce, or it could be another in a line of Batmen to pick up the mantle.
Agent P would seem to be based on the feelings on some readers, the ones that just "have to know" who this Batman is, and Batman's final words to him (and the readers) are basically: it doesn't matter who I am under the mask, I'm Batman.
it seems to hint at it being the lazarus pit, as gordon mentions they all got older but batman never aged.
