How Can Men Benefit From Hormone Replacement Therapy?

  • The topic of bio-identical hormone replacement is very popular among women because as they approach menopause, the estrogen and progesterone levels go down dramatically, and they have quite a lot of symptoms associated with that. So, hormone replacement for women is a standard thing at menopause.
It’s starting to become considerably more well recognized for men because of the condition known as andropause, where there are declining levels of testosterone and other hormones. The types of things that men would notice would be not perhaps quite as dramatic as the types of things that women notice at menopause. Things like gradually declining energy, gradually declining muscle strength, a little bit of increasing abdominal weight, a little bit less ambition, drive, and motivation, a little bit less stamina, and of course, a little bit of declining erection performance. These are all the reasons why men would come to me asking for an evaluation of their hormone levels.
Invariably, this spectrum of symptoms improves when we top up the testosterone to the more youthful end of the spectrum. Men feel markedly younger, more vigorous, productive, and even more confident.
So, addressing hormones for men is very important as we age. Keep in mind that nothing good is happening in your body as these hormone levels decline, and certainly, we would want to prevent you from becoming decrepit and frail. So please contact the office if you are concerned about any of the symptoms we talked about today.

I have a question. Why dont they do hormone replacement or increase the persons hormones based on biological sex for people with gender dysphoria?

Excellent question! I don’t specialize in gender dysphoria as it is a very complex issue. The first step is counseling long before any hormone therapy

I have a thing called klinefelter's that I found out in 2016 when trying to have a child I have no sperm it feels so hopeless for me I wanted to see if this would help me barely any facial hair and muscle don't build to much what do you suggest

Dennis: thanks for your question. While there is no “cure” for Klinefelters, it can be treated with testosterone replacement and the sooner, the better! Make sure you also keep tabs on your estrogen levels.

My husband has no testosterone at age 66. He has secondary polycythemia so his hematologist will not let him take testosterone. No sex life here!

What a shame! We usually address polycythemia with serial phlebotomies. There are other options besides TRT however: consider Trimix injections prior to intercourse

@@pagdinhealth His hematologist has him get a phlebotomy when his hemoglobin or hematocrits get high. He can tell when he needs one because he has no energy. His pcp gave him Viagra but he won’t take it. I doubt it that he would stick a needle in his penis for the Trimix! Don’t you have to be aroused for the ED drugs to work? My husband has zero sex drive.

@@pagdinhealth he does get phlebotomies often. He has Viagara but doesn’t like the way it makes him feel. He has no sex drive.

There is an experimental peptide for libido called PT141, or Bremelanotide, available as a nasal spray. The Trimix injection would be much more effective than Viagra without the side effects.
