  • Making a Pattern for a Long Stiffener to go in a Shoe or Boot
From Card Pattern to Leather Stiffener
The Stiffener in the back part of a shoe, although hidden from sight, is an essential part of the fit and function.
A well designed Stiffener can make the difference between a successful fit and a poor fitting shoe.
Long Stiffeners give extra support, help hold the foot in the shoe and prevent slip-on shoes from gaping at the quarters.
The Long Stiffener pattern can be cut down to make the pattern for a Mid-waist or a Short Stiffener.
Knowing how and where to skive the leather Stiffener if the final part of this skill set.

A wonderful and fascinating channel that is a joy to watch.
If you read comments, and are still out there, you really should add 'ASMR' to the titles of your videos, because this channel is a hidden gem and your views and subscriptions will go through the roof!

What synchronicity. Never heard of Salvatore Ferragamo, and I've done a fair bit of shoe research. Came across his name yesterday when researching cork soles and investigated a bit more, though didn't come across the little heal secret. Those little details can make a difference to a good design, which now lives on in your shoes. Master craftsmen make names for themselves through these details which most people don't recognise consciously, but feel intuitively.

Me too! There is so little in depth videos about shoemaking that I really appreciate alle of your videos. Especially moments like how to hold the clicking knife, how to get rid of the creases while lasting and the whole series about lastmaking. I hope you continue you good work and I would be very interested in choice of leather for different uses, preperation of leather and I would love to see the lady talk, who made the beautiful derby uppers!

Could you explain a little more about the process of preparing/mellowing the leather for making the heel counters? Thank you!

I really appreciate your videos. Thank you.
Do you prefer the leather for heel counter? I have also seen the thermo molded type. What do you think of those?

I learned so much from your video's! May I ask which leather and what thickness you use for your stiffeners?
Also, I would love to see a series where you start from scratch and make a whole pare of shoes!
