“Straight No Chaser” off that Ginger Baker Trio’s “Going Back Home” album has been one of my go to test tracks for many many years. Incredible gathering of talent. Thanks, Steve.
The thing I love about your channel (and is kinda a USP over other HiFi TH-camrs) is the fact that you're actually listening to good music (and talk about it more than the technology). Love it! :)
Just bought an SVS sb-2000 I am very happy with. On the SVS website, they have a search engine of a library of speakers and which sub to use with them. This contains the setting for each sub, speaker combo. The setting is basically the same with each sub for a speaker model. So I having Buchart s400 would set the sub at 50htz with a 24db eq slope speakers at 80htz. You really know when you have the subs tuned in right when you can not tell where the bass is coming from and it truly becomes part of the soundstage.
Finally found a sub to replace my beloved Sunfire True Subwoofer, which is going on well over 20 years and almost 50 pounds. Thanks for the review of SVS sub, as well as those recordings you spoke about! 👍🏾🙌🏾
I just got this little beast for my computer audio setup. It’s really nice. Works great with my LS50 Meta + Avantone Pro + Topping D90. I was using an older SB-2000 sub, but it was too big to fit under my desk. I’m very pleased with the 3000 Micro.
I have KEF ls50 meta's too and have been considering this sub, as the KEF KC62 is a lot more expensive and i feel the svs micro offers better value for money
To turn the sub on & off with the app use one of the three presets and set the volume to minimum -60db, set crossover to lowest 30Hz and the slope to 24 db per octave. Then just switch between your regular preset and the one set up with these 3 most reduced settings for quick A/B comparison.
My white SVS SB2000 works in perfect harmony with my Marantz SR5012 and 5 KEF R series speakers. On a smaller scale my white SVS SB1000 works seamlessly with my pair of bamboo Audioengine P4 speakers. Could not be happier with SB (sealed box) SVS subwoofers.
thanks for your idea of putting the sub beside my listening position, such an easy fix, the bass comes from the front speakers and there's no more boominess like when I had it in a corner
The bassist on the Jack Johnson album is Michael Henderson. Billy Cobham's on drums and the guitarist is John McLaughlin. A truly great album. Miles wanted it to be a showcase for McLaughlin's fiery play...who went on to form the following year, The Mahavishnu Orchestra...and his double necked Gibson.
I have tried to hear an SVS 3000 and I was blown away. Incredible power. But my next subwoofer is gonna be KEF KC 62. That one work perfect with my KEF LS 50W II. Thanks for a good video.
I use a Wharfedale sub with my Diamond 10.2 speakers. For me, this is a better alternative than towers. As you stated, just set the low-pass filter and volume. If you’re adventurous, you can add a high pass filter to the high level just before your binding posts to allow your mid bass to free up. And if you’re into the British sound, you can bi-wire. Cool stuff. At least at my house.
This sub rocks. I'm not one to fall for that speakerwire marketing bullchit but I'm spending the 800 on this. I have these low passed at 150db 12db slope and it plays nice. It blends well into my bookshelves. Punchy, musical. A must for any stereo set up. No longer will you need to push your bookshelfs to play those bass notes because you hate subwoofers. This is it.
Liked: " as they say, there is no substitute for cubic inches." That reminded me of the muscle car era. EXCELLENT review and comparisons to subs in the same class and the variety of speakers you used. Also thanks for including the sub positions in relationship to your remodeled room, that was helpful. Another great part of your review is including the music you listened too and your feelings of the experience and the performance of the equipment. I too was hoping the KC62 had the built in app like our LS 50 Wireless ii's. Also liked that you reported the strange noises coming from the sub. Those were the SVS Aliens 👽that live in each unit tweaking things. 🛸 Lol Thanks Steve👏👍
In my career of repairing also been speaker builder and audiophile there was an only one sub-woofer that integrated incredibly and disappear and it was AUDIO-PRO B2-50 on 1980 which uses a couple of 6.5 inches woofers one inverted, did you ever hear it ?

It seems to me, given their size and price, these would be great for a multi-sub layout to smooth out room modes. However I wonder about noise from running long single ended line level cables, especially 60 Hz hum. I would be more comfortable with connection via speaker outputs from the amplifier or line level balanced outputs. Note: The SVS 3000 micro uses Mosfets as the switching transistors at the output of a class D amplifier.
I just picked up a pair of Wharfedale Denton 85Th anniversary bookshelves from the UK. Pairs well with my older SVS sub. I'm with you not going without.
I've added the KEF Cube 1.5 to my KEF X300A's and it's given me a much fuller sound. Been sound treating my room as the previous sub I had would cause the room to resonate
Did I hear this correctly? You DID NOT use the Hi Pass filter - i.e. the bookshelf speakers were running full range? If I understood that correctly...WHY? (just trying to follow along and learn). THANKS
Hi Pass is more useful for Home Theater, I find hi pass filters screw up the sound of the stereo speakers. For stereo I’d much rather run the speakers fall range, they sound much better that way. For Home Theater explosions and special-effects with lots of bass that becomes an issue, hence the need for Hi pass filtering

Hi Steve always enjoy your show, question, next year will you be replacing the rp600m and the kef's and the Bowers and Wilkins with something new. It seems these speakers have been your reference for such a long time, is it time for new reference speakers?
"There is no replacement for displacement" is what you were looking for (assuming you weren't making an inside joke). It's a satisfying thought but not actually true though, with engines or with subwoofers.
Kubrick and Dr. Strangelove. Still one of my all time favorites. "There's no fighting in the war room." Reminds me of another oddball movie in that era. The Sky Above and the Mud Below. I can't even remember what it was about.
I think the app would make me crazy. I have 2 small REL subs in the corners behind old Ohm Walsh 4s. My son and I spent a morning adjusting the roll off or crossover and volume about 4 years ago, and haven't touched them since. I forget they are there.
Love your enthusiasm and passion... and the shirt. I have an SVS PB4000 and love it. Great in my home theater but prefer my REL Stentors in my audio. They are faster.
@@billbones1000 that does sounds sweet. Given the price of these little subs I am keeping my two REL T5is they are killer diller. I think downfired is key with the REL spreads out the bass maybe not good for the downstairs neighbors or depending on your floor but with concrete covered with vinyl it worked well in my basement with both the LS50 and the LRS that are supposedly hard to match subs with.
Great review! Thanks for the info. I have a Jamo Sub650 that I am looking to replace with the SVS micro 3000. Do you think the SVS will be much better than the Jamo? 4x3 size room
@steve. - i’m about to pull the trigger on a kc62 (paired with ls50w2). When ignoring price, remote control option (app) which one (kc 62 or 3000 micro) gives the best sound quality (playing music only). Which one would you recommend?
Your rave review of the Magnapan LRS led me to audition and buy it, but it is a little light on bass, as indeed you said. Sounds like the KEF sub might be a better match than the SVS due to its extra speed? Keep up the great work
Would love to hear your thoughts on the q150 vs LS50 when paired with the Micro sub. I just did the $1250 challenge, to put together the best sounding system with that modest budget. Went with a Fosi ZA3, KEF q150 and Micro 3000 and I couldn’t be more excited with how well it turned out. I may eventually upgrade to the LS50s but I’m really not sure how big a difference it’d make at this point.
I would love to give this a shot. I have been downsizing sold Klipsch K-Horns and bought the Denton 85Th anniversary bookshelf. I have an SVS PB12 Plus sub but it the size of a small fridge. and might be moving to a smaller space, interesting.
I'm quite new to this so this is a genuine, non-loaded question: Would the speakers + sub sound better if the signal was high-passed going into the speakers? So the speakers can "focus" on playing the higher frequencies?
Hi Steve, thanks for your great reviews... you are on the level, enthusiastic, informative and present / review brilliantly! 🙂👍 I realise this is an old post now, but I am now finally looking for a suitable Sub' (maybe a pair further down the line) for my HiFi; I have a good system (listed below) which has taken me approx' 30yrs to get to via numerous trying/buying/selling, deals etc! I had a MX accident 'many' years ago which left me paralysed etc. etc, so my HiFi / music are (even more than before) my number 1 interest / enjoyment and (mostly because of scenario) usually listen to my music between 7 to 10 hours a day. Bearing in mind I mainly use it (90%) for music in a 2 'speaker set up, I listen mostly between 70 - 85db and want / am looking for something that's best for 'audio' rather than 'movie' -- also bear in mind I'm wanting if possible an end-game Sub'... In that regard, many say that the Rel S/510 is great and the one to go for etc, but obviously that's even more than the SVS 3000 Micro and then still more than the highly regarded Kef KC62 🤔 ANY advice wil be truly appreciated 🙂 Naim HDX (2TB) - This is truly SO good for me because I cannot physically use a standard remote control, but with environmental controls I can use it in the same way; When I had it in 2013, it was the first time since 1989 that I could interact (myself) with my entire CD collection!. Naim XPS Power supply. Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista 800 Amplifier (Tuned further by John Sampson - HIGHLY recommended, from an already great Amp’ to a superb Amp’ IMO!)... those three components are plugged into a Russ Andrews X4 Block each using an Atlas EOS 4DD UK Mains Power Cable. Kef Reference 1 'speakers (Foundry Edition - not the new 'Meta's'). Chord Electronics Qutest DAC (plugged into standard wall socket). Chord Company Sarum Super Aray (not the latest version) interconnects. Chord SignatureXL ‘speaker cable. ALL the best, Simon.
For some ear popping dynamics try chuck mangione children of sanchez ". i think it's the second track on the album which surprised me with it's dynamics.
Hi! :-) Tower speakers owner here. My old speakers had no problem at al with sounding right. My current speakers though sound very muddy because they need MUCH more room to breathe, which I don't have. I understood that subwoofers don't need much space to breathe? I want to put one next to each speaker. If I would add subwoofers next to my speakers, what should I do? Turn the bass down as much as possible and let the subs do the majority of the work, so the speakers themselves won't sound too muddy? Or should I take away really ALL the bass from the speakers and let the subs do everything? (Thinking about buying 2 SVS SB 1000 Pro's next to my Etude Rhea speakers.) Side note; I also would like more midrange frequency emphasis from the speakers. I understood that if you take away the bass, the mids will come out better?
I just bought one of these a few days ago and I can't get it to produce the lower frequencies for music without over producing the higher end of the low frequency spectrum. I've adjusted the crossover down to 50/60/70 hrz and it just gets quite. I bump up the crossover and the higher pitched sound overwhelms what I'm hearing by the time I raise the volume of it to an audible level. Does it need to be broken in?
I have two REL T5i with the LRS worked very well. One sub isn't great IMHO. Stuck the subs close to the wall maybe 4" and the LRS directly in front and about 2 1/2 ft. off the wall. Set the crossover at about 70 hz and run speakers full range.
The high frequency doot-doot-doot sounds are probably coil whine from those mosfets you mentioned. Hard to completely remove but shouldn't be audible, especially at the distance you'd typically have the sub.
"It's a great little subwoofer" ... how would it compare to the svs sb2000 pro? I would love something bigger but the WAF does not permit it. I will be limited to about 15" cubed
Steve is concerned about about sensing where the subwoofer is. I've never had that problem. However, everytime I'm in a surround sound environment and I find myself looking left or right because of the sound, I think, "Fail. You've taken me out of the movie." That's the main reason, I think, that I haven't felt compelled to "upgrade" my 2.1 system.
Just upgraded my two channel system with the addition of a new REL t/7x, hooked up high level, and it totally disappears in my small room. I crossed the sub at 55/60 kHz to where my 805 d3’s drop off. I am blown away by the sound I have been missing in my favorite music.
@@MrPRScollector That's another pet peeve of mine. The positive reviews here and elsewhere of speakers that don't cover the entire dynamic range seem to imply, "I don't mind not hearing all the music." I used to have tower speakers that went down to 32 hz. You know what made them sound better? A subwoofer. I'm not saying that speakers that don't cover the entire dynamic range are bad. They're just inadequate in this one sense. But I'm out in the woods listening to David Gilmour on a Bluetooth speaker. So what do I know? ;-)
What Steve has graciously done is allowed that particular business to address the performance of their product without unnecessarily damaging their reputation. The kindest thing possible was not to review the product...
Apps for controlling speakers or really anything worry me. Twenty or thirty years from now, the speakers will probably still work. But in that time, technology, like phones, will change so much that the app may no longer work. Companies routinely stop supporting older products. You can't count on them to keep updating the apps with all the changes in technology that are sure to come.
@@OMDF01 My current speakers are over 25 years old. So yes, I do think about those things. If anybody is looking to buy their last audio system, they should think about those things as well.
The problem can be lapsed support at five years as some companies do. Not the end of the world but annoying nevertheless. We can enjoy vintage audio because most parts are "off the shelf".
Steve, nice review. I think I have a good use situation for the 3000 micro sub with some SVS Prime Wireless speaker I have in my bathroom. I have audio in every room of my house and outside as well. Man, Amir over on the Audio Theory Review called you out last night, I feel, in a personal way over your B&W 607 review. The snark over there is getting really hard to over look and detracts from the good things he does.
I love these videos. I have to laugh when you said another sub didn't have an app and you have to get up to change settings. I guess if one doesn't want to change the LP or CD , is there a jukebox mechanism. Oh wait, simply stream from your P hardwired in the system or high def from internet.

Which one would you recommend?
two REL t5i sounded pretty darn good with my ls50 1200 bucks for two class a/b amp very nice units
Your rave review of the Magnapan LRS led me to audition and buy it, but it is a little light on bass, as indeed you said. Sounds like the KEF sub might be a better match than the SVS due to its extra speed? Keep up the great work
Right the KC62
@@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac Much appreciated your reply, and excellent advice as always.
BMW 607 S2 Anniversary used with SVS 3000.
I believe Dave Holland is one Bass player on MD JJ album. Glad to hear you doing subs now Steve.
You could try stereo pairs next....yes, pressure😁
Either Holland or Michael Henderson, to my knowledge.
I'm quite new to this so this is a genuine, non-loaded question: Would the speakers + sub sound better if the signal was high-passed going into the speakers? So the speakers can "focus" on playing the higher frequencies?
Yes
Hi Steve, thanks for your great reviews... you are on the level, enthusiastic, informative and present / review brilliantly! 🙂👍
I realise this is an old post now, but I am now finally looking for a suitable Sub' (maybe a pair further down the line) for my HiFi; I have a good system (listed below) which has taken me approx' 30yrs to get to via numerous trying/buying/selling, deals etc!
In that regard, many say that the Rel S/510 is great and the one to go for etc, but obviously that's even more than the SVS 3000 Micro and then still more than the highly regarded Kef KC62 🤔
ANY advice wil be truly appreciated 🙂
Naim HDX (2TB) - This is truly SO good for me because I cannot physically use a standard remote control, but with environmental controls I can use it in the same way; When I had it in 2013, it was the first time since 1989 that I could interact (myself) with my entire CD collection!.
This is why I prefer mini monitors and sub pairings over towers. The place you set the towers usually isn’t the best spot for a sub.
For some ear popping dynamics try chuck mangione children of sanchez ". i think it's the second track on the album which surprised me with it's dynamics.
Good review. Active crossovers are the key to making subs sound good though.
It’s better then SB 2000pro ?
(Thinking about buying 2 SVS SB 1000 Pro's next to my Etude Rhea speakers.)
Side note; I also would like more midrange frequency emphasis from the speakers. I understood that if you take away the bass, the mids will come out better?
Question. If you cut the lows to the speaker. If done properly can you get better midrange performance.
Thanks for the great videos
I just bought one of these a few days ago and I can't get it to produce the lower frequencies for music without over producing the higher end of the low frequency spectrum. I've adjusted the crossover down to 50/60/70 hrz and it just gets quite. I bump up the crossover and the higher pitched sound overwhelms what I'm hearing by the time I raise the volume of it to an audible level. Does it need to be broken in?
Sub is out of phase
Thank you Mr g
Nice review. I've been contemplating adding a sub to my Sonus Faber Sonetto IIs which are in a smaller room. Might be a good fit, thank you!
Yes
Love that little thing, just watched a review on it on Joeys tell all channel, great reviews.
Enthusiasm goes a long way!
Does this have the speed to keep up with the magnepan lrs?
Check two comments above.
I have two REL T5i with the LRS worked very well. One sub isn't great IMHO. Stuck the subs close to the wall maybe 4" and the LRS directly in front and about 2 1/2 ft. off the wall. Set the crossover at about 70 hz and run speakers full range.
Steve tell it like it is as you always do - Manual anything is "a pain in the ass" I get it!!
Ther is always a way to turn any appliance off & that is to “pull the plug”
Specific track(s) recommended for invisible sub test? Ie bass from only left or right channel
Finally, I know how to pronounce that Philip Glass album
they sing the name in the song
Steve, much appreciated...
The high frequency doot-doot-doot sounds are probably coil whine from those mosfets you mentioned. Hard to completely remove but shouldn't be audible, especially at the distance you'd typically have the sub.
Would love to know how it compares to the Sunfire True subwoofer of the same size but with 2700 watts of power.
"It's a great little subwoofer" ... how would it compare to the svs sb2000 pro? I would love something bigger but the WAF does not permit it. I will be limited to about 15" cubed
what is the distortion as a function of SPL and frequency?
So what do I know? ;-)
I was really into the idea of getting a SVS in the end I went for MK 350THX
Definitely the push and pull is the way to go
I agree, but a completely different price range
I was glad to hear that every once in a while you get gear that's not worth reviewing.
@Douglas Blake but also it doesn’t take long for a product to drop out of recommendations from the collective.
You worry about 1K things twenty/thirty years down the road??? Are you all right? !!!😂!!!
7:54 Best sound demo on TH-cam.
How would you compare this sub to the KEF you just reviewed?
So far is the Klipsch RP 600M it has more base thin all the Speakers you mentioned, but you need a real amp not class D a class AB amp
Hi Steve would you say the Zu audio dirty weekend speakers and the DIY amp camp amp are a good match. Thank you
Yes, a good match, if you’re not into playing loud or crave dynamics. 8 watts is 8 watts
@@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac Right now i only have a desktop setup , jamo c91, SMSL sa300 ...i want more :-)
I have the 600M with 2 subs and yeah. Amazing
