My first electric guitar was a Zennon, but my second was a Gibson ES-335 walnut from 74 with a Fender Twin. The kids used to call me Zetar-Jerry! I used to hate that. The guitar cost $500.00 & the amp was 600 with custom Altec Lancings. I had the trapeze tail piece. One year I stuffed T-shirts, (in yellow) to make the black walnut to look better? I tried everything I knew to make it sound better and was happy to get rid of it. Years later I learn what my mistake was.

The band name came from an old coat Jim James found that had “MMJ written on it. Many might know them from the song that broke them big: “Off the Record”. Another great track from them is “Victory Dance”, classic kind of a long and slow to get heavy track.

It's a Walnut Brown ES 335 with dot inlays and a thicker white binding than usual on the front and back of the body. I had a 1968 model the same color but it had small block inlays on the fret board and a trapeze tail piece going to the tune-a-matic bridge. I liked the Walnut finish because it's not the typical red, tobacco sunburst or natural finish most 335s had.

Whenever I have a strap button that keeps turning, I just put super glue in it. You don’t want to fill the hole with glue, you just want it on the sides. The threads basically. Let it dry, then screw the button back in. You screw it in AFTER the glue drys. That’s key.

I saw Jim James back in 2004 when he was on tour with Conor Oberst (of Bright Eyes and other acts) and M. Ward. (All three would later become members of the supergroup Monsters of Folk.) I was blown away. Maybe it was music, maybe it was the fact that I finally kissed the girl I had been crushing on mid-concert, maybe it was just the heady days of college life, but it still ranks as my favorite concert I ever attended. I bought a MMJ shirt that remained my favorite shirt for years, and their Acoustic Citsouca live album. Been a fan ever since. MMJ has since been in my top 5 favorite bands of all time. Always wondering which 335 iteration I should get, love owls, and mad respect for Jim James. Color me sold. I guess I should start saving to get one of these.

They were in an episode where Hayley skips family dinner to go to a MMJ concert, so Stan goes to the concert to get her to come home cause they're a "Hippie Band". Tuneomatic bridges that don’t have a retaining wire, or springs, always end up buzzing and rattling. The ones with C ring washers are the absolute worst. They get loose and buzz horribly. Wilkinson makes a bridge with springs holding the saddles in place. That’s my favorite tuneomatic bridge.

Unfortunately Gibson Guitars, as well as the main consumers of Gibson guitars, are more focused on growing the investment opportunities and valuation of their instruments more than refining the issues that plague them in terms of the durability, delivery and ultimately playability standardization across their lineups.
Gibson's are more looked at as investment pieces and highly inflated in value to performance/presentation. I genuinely don't think Gibson's direction currently is interested in securing themselves in the eyes of players - both new and old player alike (I mean look at how the brand is perceived by younger guitarists as being "antiquated rich boomer guitars that are overpriced").

Gibsons can be good, but often your best bet is to find a good Epi version, and if need be, swap out the electronics. Although often the Epi is good as is. Also, consider Gretsch Electromatics and Streamliners! Good QC, I've found.

What you say about breaking in a new guitar, Trog, is why a few people I know have encouraged me to stick with oreowned models that have already been broke in as such. Since I kind of lost my interest in the 335 Dot after a few years of interest (I'd prefer block inlay if Icould have one) and have zero interest in signature models - I only hope that someone with neither scruple is interested in this one.

There's a lot of debris inder, the neck tenon looks crooked and sloppy, glue splatters, bracing, the fret nibs, etc. Despite Austin saying "This is one of the cleaner ones I've seen" we have to face the fact that Gibson makes some of the most beautiful yet expensive and not really well finished guitars in the world.

So Gibson has been having a lot of “problems” with their fretboards having tool marks, over-scrapes etc. I personally don’t mind, it doesn’t really bother me all that much but I bought 2 brand new 50’s neck Les Paul Standards a Tobacco Burst one a full year ago in Nov 2020 & Heritage Cherry Sunburst one in July 2021 & the Tobacco Burst has scratches & took marks all up & down it where as the Heritage Cherry isn’t nearly as bad but has some. Again, I personally don’t care, it’s just a sign of hand craftsmen-ship to me. Sure, I understand why people would complain about it but again I personally don’t care. My 2021 Custom Shop Custom in Alpine White is absolutely incredible & it’s the first guitar I have ever purchased that was setup so flawlessly that I didn’t even have to change the strings. But, that was $5,499.00 vs the $2,499.00 I paid for the Standards (I got them before the price increase)

I wonder if the damage on your 335 was strictly an error on your specific 335, or if they all ended up like that.

I bought mine today in a store here in Spain. Mine was completely perfect. I checked every aspect by myself, and then checked against what Trogly mentions in the video, and not, mine did not have any of those details. Excellent QC.

What's the difference between an ABR1 and a Nashville bridge, aside from the studs in the body? Like, what makes this an ABR1, not a Nashville?

those tooling marks are made by people who are in charge to clean any lacquer residue in the fretboard, sometimes it could look like that because they're using a rast that isn't sharp enough and sometimes just because the worker in charge didn't have a good day lol

As a kid when I first saw a guitar with a stained finish i wasn't that impressed as i grew older and came to appreciate a good grain in a finish I really started to fall in love with most guitars with a stained clear finish. So much so I bought an Ibanez that has seven exotic woods and mostly natural. This guitar is awesome looking.

I always wondered why they had the input jack on the front of the guitar instead of on the side of the bottom... like a Telecaster or les paul..that's an awkward place on a semi-hollow body to put a lead

This guitar is not carved on the front or back. Trogly kept saying it’s got a carved top and a carved back. This is not correct. Neither the top, nor the back, are carved.

Hey I'm no expert, but I'd say those extra large strap buttons are to help make sure it doesn't come off, because if you drop it once you just destroyed 3500$ and yet you play it with the strap buttons screw stripped!
