      Good list. To me, 13 Sentinels and Odin Sphere Leifthrasir are interchangeable at first place depending on what mood you're in and ranking Muramasa at anything lower than a 3 is a hard sell for me.

    Even though it's Atlus & technically not Vanillaware (but LEAD to them), I like to connect Princess Crown to them, as it influenced Kamitani's career, leading to the founding of VW, & Princess Crown's spiritual successor, Dragon's Crown.
    Good list, by the by. Great to see you 2 working together.

Gorgeous gameplay and great music. Odin Sphere became the masterpiece it is now until the leifthrasir release. I played Grand Knights History and what a great RPG, it sure can have a spot on the top 5 vw games

    Dragon's Crown is my favorite. I love the setting and style - I understand why the character designs are controversial but you have to admit it makes the game memorable. I agree that the screen can get a bit messy at times and the gameplay loop can get a bit repetitive, but I haven't loved a fantasy setting as much since Valkyrie Profile. I'd love to see a Dragon Crown sequel with more classes, outfits and variety in dungeons

  • @Aveedesigns
    @Aveedesigns 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    PSA: Gameplay-wise, Dragon's Crown is the best and possibly the best Beat 'em Up ever made. Story-wise, Odin Sphere and 13 Sentinels are both excellent although completely different. Challenge-wise, Muramasa is very satisfying. There's also an english translation of the excellent PSP RPG Grand Knights History out there that I recommend Vanillaware fans to check out.

  • @iisanulquiorrahara8

    Out of the ones I've completed, I'd say
    1.) Oboro Muramasa, because I think Kamitani's style works best with that very traditional Japanese style, and the animations for combat just look too damn good. I didn't have all that much of an issue with the story or length, because I was just too captured by anything else. It's one of my favorite games of all time.
    2.) 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, my 2020 GOTY for putting out one of the most ambitious storylines in a video game, only matched by the Root Double visual novel and maybe Zero Escape. I loved the depth of the gameplay, despite taking some time to really get into after the tutorial, but I was all in on the sci-fi storyline from beginning to end.
    3.) GrimGrimoire, despite the story not being as ambitious as 13 Sentinels, I actually kind of like it more. Lillet Blan is one of the best protagonists in a game for how much she's gone through and how much she's persevered, despite being so young. The gameplay is very dated for the time, but honestly worth checking out. You can actually play it as a PS2 classic on the PS3, if you still have one, but it could really do with some QoL improvements on a current gen system.
    I haven't completed Dragon's Crown yet because, to be honest, I find it hard to really get into. Especially since I'm not a co-op player in general. Still, looks beautifully exaggerated, and I'm all for it.
    Odin's Sphere is kinda tricky for me. When I originally played it, it was on the PS2 as a classic, similar to GrimGrimiore, and I got bored quickly due to the gameplay. Then I played the PS4 version, and the updates really helped me get engrossed into it far more. I just haven't had the time to actually complete it, but I want to.

    I got 3 out of the 5 Games.
    First played Muramasa the Demon Blade on the Wii in 2010, loved it.
    Then played Dragon's Crown in 2014 on the PS3, LOVED IT that I also got the PS Vita version.
    I eventually played Odin's Sphere and so happy this was released on the PS3 and also got the PS Vita version so I could restart the game and play it on the road.
    Considering some of those games also got PS4 releases, you could get most of Vanillaware's classics on one system despite a few games that were limited to 1 console like the PS2 or one game that is Muramasa that only had Wii as a console release and PS Vita release on that handheld system.
    Though I know I may never get a PS4 or a PS5 due to how SONY is now with their censorship of Anime games, but I was lucky enough to get some of Vanillaware's games on the PS Vita that I know how great this niche Japanese developer is simply because they still stuck with 2D games and only using 3D Gameplay just to make the characters walk towards the camera or away from the camera but still keep the gameplay all 2D side scroll action.

  • @alexandrea4316

    Muramasa is short if you only go for the main story, if you try to complete all the optional boss fights it can probably take 5 hours more. And I'm not even talking about the DLC stories, it takes at least 2 hours to complete each one. It's a masterpiece and it deserves a remaster in 4K because it's certainly the best Vanillaware game in terms of art.

    My main problem with Odin Sphere (besides the slowdown) was the aspect ratio... the game was beautiful but I was basically always playing from that super basic minimap in the corner cuz you're pretty much in range of the enemies before you can see them on the main screen. I heard that they switched from 4:3 to 16:9 so that probably helped that considerably. Still kind of seems like 21:9 would be better still though.

    I don't agree with the length of Muramasa Rebirth, it's 5/6 hours for the MAIN story, but it has planty of Secrets, the weapons that you have to unlock, multiple endings per characters and optional side quest and bosses, you can easily reach 25-30 hours or more, so is not true that it has a short length, the Replay value is great, same thing about Dragon's Crown.

    I thoroughly enjoyed 13 Sentinels. It perfectly showcases that you don't need to reinvent the wheel to make a good game. The story is great despite having twists and elements I've seen in many other sci-fi stories. The gameplay is just a refinement of things we've seen before. In the end, you still come away feeling like you just experienced something great. It's a great example of the sum being greater than its parts.

    • @damiester1
      @damiester1 ปีที่แล้ว

      They did kinda reinvent the wheel though lol. 13 controllable characters in a VN + real time tower defense strategy is not exactly common. Obviously, it's not a complete invention, but this combination is a huge experiment that almost flopped until people started advertising by word of mouth.

  • @astahfirula
    @astahfirula 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Only disagreement i have is the position of Grim Grimoire. i would trade it with Muramasa and leave it at last and Muramasa at third. i agree with the issues you mentioned about it but still...to this day Muramasa is the most artistically beautiful game i have ever played. the backgrounds are all breathtaking. the Battlefield, the flower fields, the view from heaven...all those are masterpieces or artistic design. Other than that, fully aggree on the list. 13 Sentinels has a better story but Odin's Sphere wins for overall balance. Liked the gameplay more, the story is also awesome and the universe building is amazing. and the narrative is just as good as 13 Sentinels.
    Kinda unfair to rank the best and worst Vanillaware games, since the title of worst Vanillaware game still puts it above 99.9% of all the games out there.

    Awesome tag team video you did here guys, but Muramasa is NOT and Action RPG, is a Metroidvania style title with some RPG elements...so you put it the last ranked just because is not an rpg....that makes no sense, for me is the best of Vanillaware, less repetitive and more playable than 13 sentinels or Odin Sphere. And by the way you didn´t mention the blue print of all Vanillaware games: Princess Crown on the Saturn, I know it never came from Japan (someday I hope it does) but it is one of the best from this mastermind game creators

    This is such a coincidence I recently just won an eBay bid on Muramasa Rebirth Vita Collectors Edition!! One of my favorite games.
    Love Muramasa (Vita/Wii) and Odin Sphere (PS4/PS3/Vita) don't like the PS2 port tho, it really chugs on PS2
    For me
    Odin Sphere then Muramasa (haven't played the others because they just didn't grab my attention as much, makes me really happy people are enjoying 13 Sentinels but I'm very selective with real time strategy)

    Maybe is not the worst but not having a version of muramasa in recent consoles is a damm shame!

      Remake of a remake or should it just get ported? XD I'd be happy either way, though I still can enjoy it on vita also. I also still have my Wii version lol.

    13 Sentinels I haven’t try it yet, but looks like Story is more than gameplay. Idk if imma have fun with game mechanics

    If you play Muramasa Rebirth make sure to pick up the DLC. It is better than the main story. 4 new characters with short campaigns

    Excellent video man, I don't yet play Sentinels but don't seems very good for my taste, the best game to me is Muramasa because the gameplay, and finally Odin Sphere is gets very boring to me after playing with the first 2 characters.

    Velvet! 💜💜💜 Yeah I agree, she's definitely the sexiest girl in Odin Sphere

    I absolutely agree with Reggie's take on Muramasa. It really should have been on the ps2. Especially the re-release being a beautiful game tied to a tiny screen, its just criminal.
    I did not like Dragon's Crown AT ALL. Too clunky and fanservicey for me with no good story.
    I have always been curious about Grim Grimoire because I love witches and female protags, but the battle system turns me off, never liked that kind of game.
    13 Sentinels again, looks gorgeous but I just can't play that sort of battle system. I'm very happy for people that like it though!
    Yes Odin Sphere number 1!! My only gripe is that the gameplay just gets too repetitive. As does Muramasa's. Hearing that the ps4 remake is better in terms of gameplay makes me eager to revisit it.

    IMHO, those two should be top list:
    Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir (which improves such much on the original release) might one of the best side scroller around. Enthralling story and good combat mechanics.
    Dragon's Crown is one of the best Beat Them Up around (D&D: Mystara Chronicles / Golden Axe) and it is unfair to judge such game on the story. In 2021, even Streets Of Rage 4 feels a bit short compared to Dragon's Crown.
    So I guess Grim Grimoire or 13 Sentinel might be as well among the best games in the category they belong.
    Now Atlus and Vanillaware, share those gems on PC and other platforms.

    I kind of predicted Muramasa would be in last place. I have to agree, the game is so fun but way too short. Completeing it in a single day made me feel Like I did something wrong
