    For spider mites mix neem oil, peppermint oil and dawn dish soap to emulsify the oil so It will mix with water. I add the neem oil if I have an infestation. I use the peppermint oil, dawn dish soap, as a preventive measure. Spray entire plant, soil, container. Been using this method for years on my cannabis plants. Spider mites are hard to get rid of. Most people never do unless their plants die or they move. Even moving they can still follow. Best is to never have them in first place. Great video my first elephant ear plant and it's got 5 leaves. Gets all my left overs from feeding my other plants. It's dry 30-40% RH and 18-20c in my house still does fine

    Yes to a spider mite video! I love alocasia but they don't always love me lol. Admittedly, I've killed a few but I'm getting better and want to collect more. I bottom water when almost dry and they seem to prefer small, tight pots. And the more mature they are when purchasing, the better. Btw, another Michigander here 💚

    I've noticed that mine really like leca. That seems to be the trick to keeping multiple leaves. And I still keep it near the humidifier. I just placed my ebony, culrea, and frydek in leca, and they seem to be doing well. My variegated elephant ear usually have 6 leaves (with the oldest dying while a new one comes in). Great video, lots of information 🥰

    This video is very informative. Your tip on the 2 leaf is very similar to my experience. I recently got 2 Colocasia plantlets (which are notorious for leaf sacrifice). I decided to put one inside a humidity dome. The one without was growing fine until a new leaf come in, then two older leaves dropped immediately. The one in the dome not only maintained its leaf count (there were 4 at one point), but it sized up significantly. Each leaf getting 50% larger. Anyways, it still isn’t out of its juvenile state, but so far so good. No root rot. And no need to water much because it doesn’t dry out fast.

  • @shelley6279
    @shelley6279 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I bottom water mine and they seem to be happier that way. I also have my Mickey taro in leca and it looooooves it. I ended up transferring to leca bc it just wasn’t happy in the soil mix I put it in. Now it’s growing great and putting out bigger leaves. Also, captain jacks bug brew has been the best on keeping spider mites at bay for me!

    Hi ... I have saved your video as I have alocasia plant. This is a first time for me to have one so when I bought it from the nursery it had 2 big leaves and one baby one. I lost the 2 leaves as nursery informed me that one was due to not keeping proper supports to each one when they are growing and getting heavier which tends to bend as the stem retains water. Secondly I move it to a less warmer area and low light area specially during summer. Now it seems to be happy growing as I thot I lost all of it. For the first time I have 2 baby ones growing from my house. So happy.

    • @AllSeasonBodyFD
      @AllSeasonBodyFD 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The support is my issue. My biggest leaf’s stem has recently gotten so long that it bent and I think it’s gonna die. I wish I knew how to save it/support it. Been looking up videos on YT for days and I’m not finding any videos on that🥺🥺

    • @ElizabethPlants
      @ElizabethPlants  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've not seen this issue. Is the stem soft at all?? Its hard to tell based on your description but I'm not sure thats a normal problem and it makes me wonder if the stems are too soft due to over watering? Food for thought

    Yoo Thank You Ma'am!!

    I have Pugalistica Dementia, so I forget things so fast. Yep, I'd be waiting for you to get to your door, then I'd pop out and say HEY, I GOT A QUESTION ! LMAO
    Oh gosh, sorry!
    But seriously, THANK YOU so very much for simplifying a few things. That tremendously helped. I am a cacti guy, and I have never had a house plant before, so I got a Black Stem Alocasia.
    Borneo King Alocasia, and the
    Thai Giant Colocasia. My kiddoes don't have a clue what's coming. LoL .
    They are baby plants, and was seeing the first signs of "something" the first day after they had shipped for 4 days.
    The tips is the leaves began to cuve downward. It is incredible to see sooo many people having different ways to care for them, making their way the "law".
    I ended up finding video answers from a company that produces hydroponics for Marijuana plants, and collectable house plants.
    My Black Stem is the smaller of the two, and it came in, leaning to one side, turning its underside (belly) upwards. That was the coolest thing to learn why plants do that. 😁
    Yo, you amd your plants have a wonderful holliday season!

  • @Dwynfal
    @Dwynfal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Good tips Elizabeth!
    I struggled with the leaf curse for a couple years before finding a fertiliser that they seemed to like better. With all else (soil, water, humidity) staying exactly the same, they started keeping older leaves whilst putting on new growth too. So that's maybe something to look into if people are struggling with that problem. But I agree with you, it's the whole package; if they don't like one thing, whatever it may be, then they will keep on dropping older leaves as new ones come in.

    • @ElizabethPlants

    very helpfull! and you have gorgeous Alocasia 🥰 I was afraid to overwater. I'm using Seramis (it's like small Leca bits BUT who can detain moisture) and they are happy and getting so big. I killed my Frydek who was in soil (my first root rott) and now the Rhizome has new growth points. Lesson learned, I'm sticking to Seramis for plants who need more moisture.

    Fertilizer, I'm in Florida and in the rainy season [summer] I put a 2 gallon watering can of Miracle-Gro by direction about once a month but that's about 3-4 feedings in 4-5 months. I do nothing for about 6-8 months. Its sand down here and water runs right through it. I water about ever 1-3-6+ days in the dry season [winter] and nothing in the wet season[summer]. I just got my first blossoms. Its only my second year of growing.

    I don't have trouble with only two leaves and I think that problem is not enough nourishment these plants have huge leaves and that takes a lot of nitrogen phosphorus and potassium to grow those big leaves and if they're anything like orchids they need calcium and magnesium also to grow all those cells in those big leaves. I'm a big user of those fertilizer sticks that you can buy at the big box stores are at Dollar Tree in the spring. I also after I water my orchids once a week or every 10 days use the leftover nutrient solution they soak in to water my plants. In my alocasia and colocasia and caladiums I plant outside I use a generous amount of osmocote in the potting soil. They need nourishment to grow those big leaves and the reason why they lose a leaf to gain leaf is there moving or recycling the mobile nutrients into the new Leaf because there's not enough that the routes can take up in the soil. Magnesium is also a mobile nutrient and it can be given to them by putting a teaspoon of Epsom salts in a gallon of water. Calcium know the only way you can give that to them is by something like Cal Mag that you can buy on the internet it's a liquid nutrient solution you can add to your watering practice. Read the label you have to add it first before any other fertilizer. Calcium is an on mobile nutrient it has to be given to the plant. It can't get calcium by eating up or recycling an older leaf. I never used osmocote before but since I started watching Maria's Garden on TH-cam with her succulents she's a great believer in it and her plants that she raises for her Nursery she doesn't get plants and she raises all her stalk herself do really well. I'll buy the biggest bag Lowe's has because that's the cheapest way to buy it buying a little bag is way more expensive. And the thing about time-release like osmocote the warmer it is the more of the fertilizer that's released and the cooler it is the less is released so it's still good to every once in awhile give them some Miracle-Gro. The nutrient solution I use for my orchids is weak it's 1/2 to 1/3 the usual amount recommended on the label.

    • @ElizabethPlants
      @ElizabethPlants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've never heard of osmocote, but I agree with the importance of fertilizing!!

    • @kathleenmurphy2379
      @kathleenmurphy2379 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ElizabethPlants osmocote is those little round pellets of fertilizer you see when you buy a plant at a nursery and look at the potting soil. It lasts about six months and it's slow release and it's an even number like 10 10 10 so everything is great. I love it I've only been using it for a year but every time I mix up potting soil for my plants I use it and I can tell the difference. It can even be used to top dress. Smaller Regal Shield I planted this year and a bigger pot outside this summer is as big as its mother now and I think it's all thanks to the osmocote. You can get it at Lowe's it comes in a plastic bottle in the smaller size but if you buy the bigger size it's much much cheaper even though instead of being about $8 it's 20 something but you get so much more for so much less money. And I still fertilize with the leftover nutrient solution are fertilized solution after my orchids soap. That solution has Cal Mag in it and seaweed in emulsion not fish Emulsion that stuff stinks and epsom salts micronutrients and a fertilizer for orchids sometimes the nitrogen number is higher and sometimes the phosphorus number is higher and every once in a while I use a Miracle Grow and I guess is for tomatoes maybe that has the third number higher the potassium.

    • @ElizabethPlants
      @ElizabethPlants  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahhhh never heard it called that. Ive actually had poor luck with it, maybe what I had was a dud? Its been years since I tried it. Recently I've been using fish emulsion and they love it!

    • @kathleenmurphy2379
      @kathleenmurphy2379 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ElizabethPlants I don't like the smell of it plus I read somewhere that the fish Emulsion fertilizer is now contaminated and since I water my orchids first no one suggested using it on Orchids. Put the seaweed in motion fertilizer or nutrient solution is a great addition to plants. There's hormones in the seaweed Emulsion fertilizer that help a plant grow leaves roots and blooms. And there's also Trace elements and some phosphorus the solution. Is seaweed that it's made from can sometimes grow a foot or two a day. My orchids and then whatever they don't use up in the solution they soak in the other plants love. in fact I plant pansies over the winter and they grow lots of roots over the winter and then Bloom fantastically in the spring much better than spring planted pansies. Since I started to put the leftover Orchid nutrient solution are there also every once in awhile during the winter they had twice as many blooms and more twice as big then they usually were.

    I really enjoyed this video. Very informative. I inherited an alocasia poly when my Mom passed away. I inherited the green thumb from my Mom and am so happy about that. Getting back to the poly. He was beautiful when I got him a year ago and slowly lost all his leaves by this past summer. I was going to throw him away but wanted the pot so when I dumped him out he had a beautiful root system and big bulb. I decidedly to make a self watering pot and plant in pumice. He's been in pumice for 4 months has2 leaves and is thriving . So I just bought a Maharani. He's not happy and dropped 2 of his 3 leaves. He had gotten a little frost bite on his trip from Louisiana to me in Michigan but after watching your video I'm thinking he just needs to acclimate. Do you think he'll be ok because I planted him in the same setup as my Poly. Sorry for rambling. Thankyou for all your insights

    The way you tell the difference between an alocasia in a colocasia is an alocasia the leaves point up towards the sky and a colocasia believes Point down towards the ground. They're both elephant ears and caladiums are in the elephant ear family also. And yes they are arrowheads and my Regal Shield mother a five babies I removed all of her babies last year when I repotted her when she outgrew her Nursery pot. Now one of her babies is as big as her! And she has another baby but I don't want to repot her because it's the end of the summer. I wanted to say she bloomed last winter when I brought her into my bedroom and it was a beautiful white lily like flower but at night it stunk like a cat. So I had to cut her flowers off whenever they bloomed I'm going to give away one of her babies at the beginning of November as a giveaway on my channel to my subscribers. I love my Regal Shield I have to unnamed alocasia and I have quite a few colocasia. I really love the colocasia with the black leaves and I bought a couple from Brian's tropicals one of them is called Pharros mask and it's just gotten to be a nice size here at the end of the summer. I'm going to try to bring that one in for the winter. You can let the colocasia go dormant over the winter and leave them in the soil or the pot there growing in but don't let the soil freeze I kept mine in the garage Last Summer last winter I mean. Alocasia if they go dormant are hard to get them to re-sprout so I bring my alocasia in for the winter

Now my colocasia one particular one that I bought last year at Lowe's and it's called black something and I can't remember the name it has a dull black color to the leaves and all the little baby ones because that colocasia grows by runners and I must have a dozen babies from last year that sprung up everywhere the mother plant died I think it was too close to the garage door instead of the back of the garage and must have froze but apparently all these little Roots didn't and they grew babies. But they drive me nuts with spider mites and I spray them every once in a while with alcohol. My other colocasia outside don't seem to be bothered for some reason but they have shiny leaves so maybe shiny leaves spider mites don't like I don't know I think it's weird where some get the spider might even outside and some don't

      Its amazing which plants the mites choose. I have 9 alocasia on 1 shelf and if I have a bad breakout, like 6 of them will get mites and the other 3 will be untouched despite being so close together

  • @mimosveta

    all my alocasias (3 of them) are in jars with leca, so basically, they are always in water, and always dry at the same time, and they are all grouped together, and each plant (6-7 plants, three species) all even the youngest one, all have only one leaf. As soon as new leaf pops out, the previous one goes yellow and flops and is done for...
    so I don't think it's humidity
    I'm also unsure how to fertilize them, considering they are sitting in water, but next time they need to be topped off, I'll add really diluted fert, just to see if it does anything at all
    I put them in the leca after seeing a video where a girl was explaining hot to root cormlets and she found that to be the most reliable way, and all her plants had many leaves, and two I had at the time, both had 0 leaves. She said make it so that bottom half is always in water, and upper half always dry, and that's what I do, and it seems to work so far as to them having one leaf at the time, but not beyond that...

    im planning to put a giant elephant ear into my koi pond once the air temperature doesn't get below 50. It is in a grow bag that is 12" deep by 16" wide . and the tuber is 9 inches so it has no depth below the tuber. once it awakens in my house I will put it in the pond to were only 1"-2" inches of water are covering it. I live in Maryland and my heavily stocked koi pond is in partial shade. I've just used topsoil for the giant elephant ear. should I change my set up? thanks for posting the video!

    Currently have a variegated alocasia odora and my god she’s giving me trouble. Every time a new leaf comes in one dies :/. But it doesn’t just die it gets really soft, falls over and turns yellow. When my plant started out each one had 3+ leaves….now one stem is down to two leaves and the other is down to 3. It’s driving me insane making me think I’m doing everything wrong. So hopefully upping the humidity helps. I hate seeing her like this.

      I had a variegated one with similar problems and I changed the humidity by switching its environment and then out it under a grow light and now its growing like crazy. So I say give it a shot! Also try allowing it to dry out just a tad more than normal in case the yellowing is sign of root struggle

I have a few but the small version (growing no more than a couple feet high) just regular, I forgot the genious name, simple elephant ear. BUT, the dog gone thing pushes out so much growth that is long and heavy so it is always drooped over. It gets constant light from above the crown so is not searching for light, its watering has always been the same, but is always drooping! Should I not allow a certain amount of leaves to come from each plant or is this a problem I can solve by prunning another way? I would love any advice!

    I'm about to give up on all my smaller, tender, "fancier" alocasia. Pretty sure one managed to get three different types of pests and completely deteriorated within 48 hours, which passed them on to the nearby anthurium and the other types of jewel alocasia. My large varieties though, I'm sure could survive an apocalypse. They even bloom/flower inside my apartment, in the winter 🤦🏻. The smaller ones though, it's like balancing on a wire. Once you lean a liiiittle bit too far one way (over/under watering), it becomes a cycle of just trying to get your balance enough to keep it alive.
    Did that make sense? Probably not. Can you tell how much these things are stressing me out? Probably.
