Here's an interesting theory (no spoilers) that I recall reading that I think you guys may appreciate: The five siblings are the embodiment of the 5 stages of grief: Steve is Denial Shirley is Anger Theo is Bargaining Luke is Depression and Nellie is Acceptance The show certainly deals with the powerful theme of what happens when a family and the individuals in it do not face the collective trauma and individual trauma they experienced at Hill House and through losing their mother in the manner they did. Their refusal to be honest with each other and to dig into what they experienced as children at Hill House haunts each of them in different ways through their entire adult lives.

Nell's meds are directly connected to Luke's drug habit. Luke was really able to get clean (the 90 days) when she quit her meds in the end. So in a way, she put him before herself AGAIN - and it killed her.
I agree but unfortunately horror doesn’t get the love it deserves. Pearl is another example of amazing acting that should have been nominated for an award.
People forget about Shirley’s abilities with dreams. She tends to dream about some things and she said once, “nellie’s in the red room” and “dancing in the red room”

@@resurgingflame I don't believe Steve was shown to have any abilities, and Shirley's seem to be minor. They both woke up at the same time so there was a connection between the kids, but perhaps it was more from Nell than of themselves.
Very true. I remember binge watching episodes 3, 4 and 5, but after ep 5, with Nellie's death, I just had to stop. I was so deeply shocked by how unfair and desperate it was. That she was haunted from her little kid age, throughout her life, by her own death. That the terrible events of her death night did not only ended her life, it also ruined her whole life from 6-year-old till her death. She never had a chance to have a good life, and when she started to enjoy life a little bit, it all just got even worse. A terrible, endless downward spiral.
@@glowface79 the guys mentioned that this story is about dealing with trauma, and one terrible aspect of trauma is that the average person tends to have a threshold of how much they'll willingly believe. It seems like the more horrible a thing that happened to a person, the more skeptical the people hearing about it will get until they just listen with a doubtful smile, like Nell's family do to her whenever she tries to tell them everything. I think it's because some trauma is so huge it hurts just to know about, so it's easier to try to pretend it's made up to protect yourself from the weight of it. Some people get a drug habit to cope with trauma, some people bury themselves in work, some people encase themselves in metaphorical ice, some people try to rationalize, some people leave. And some people, like Nell, shrink on on themselves and become invisible, perhaps still being loved by family, but never truly seen by them. Except for her husband and her equally messed-up brother. Poor Nell. I think Nell's story is one for the silent sufferers, who go through life being empathetic and kind because they truly understand misery, but whose own pain goes unnoticed or unaided. The ones who put on a brave face, or the ones who keep their mouth shut because they simply can't stand to be disbelieved yet again. It's absolutely devastating, but the portrayal is so beautiful and nuanced
What's cool is that there was actually no editing or transitions for the first 15 minutes of episode 6. It was all done in one take. Super impressive on everyones part.
"i was right here and nobody could see me." it's nellie's damn funeral and the family is making it about themselves arguing about old grievances instead of talking about her. they also ignored her metaphorically leaping and waving her hands as she was descending into the grasp of the house. just breaks my heart.
Yeah, when Shirley and Steve were going on about "why didn't she reach out to us?" I was like bitch really? She reached out to both of you but you ignored her calls!!

The metaphor for depression in episode 6 is unbeatable. That last scene from young Nell summarizes her feelings and sadness: "I was here, i was right here... I was screaming and shouting but none of you could see me. Nobody can see me" It really shocked me how good this episode was
not sure if you guys caught this but the reason Nell dumped her pills was so that Luke could get well. she could see that he was not himself, even in the car when he was asking her to get her drugs. that wasn't Luke talking, that was the monkey on his back craving heroin. because of their "Twin Thing", she knew that as long as she was taking her meds, he would never be able to get clean so she made the ultimate sacrifice to save her twin brother. beautiful and tragic. ❤
I like it but I can’t buy it. there was no defining moment for me that would cause Nell to dispose of her meds due to the twin connection. Instead, I think it was right after she saw the bent neck lady and decided that she had to face it/deal with it. She was taking the meds to escape the Bent Neck Lady. Then despite taking meds, she still saw her.
@@realSimoneCherie that’s also a valid theory but I think that since both things happened at the same time, both are plausible. The Bent Neck Lady only shows up at significant moments in Nellie’s life and that moment was significant for a reason. I think it was when she realized her brother would never get well as long as she was taking meds. with the twin connection, he felt what she felt so when she was drugged up, so was he. she even gives a hint in the next scene when she explains to the Psychiatrist that she could feel Luke’s withdrawal symptoms until they finally stopped.
Episode 6: Two Storms is hands down one of my favourite episodes of television ever. This plus Lost's The Constant and Buffy's The Body are absolute masterpieces of storytelling and acting. "I was right here the whole time. None of you could see me. Nobody could see me" 🥺🥺
One of the issues that Nell and Luke had is that they had a "twin thing" as they call it. What Nell felt, Luke felt. Which is why he felt his neck hurt and began to feel cold while being sober on the night Nell died. But Nell also felt Luke. Which is why she was having a medication problem. It's a vicious circle. Nell fed Luke's pain and Luke fed Nell's pain. It went on and on back and forth. Luke got sober because Nell was happily married for a while. But then bad things happened again and it began to fall apart for them both. 👫
actually by the time nell was happy, luke was having problems with addiction and when nell was off meds and getting worse, luke was getting clean. The neverending cycle of pain for them. And Nell decided to stop with the medicine so like could be better. She was REALLY selfless...
“But nobody could see me” always gets me. Imagine feeling so alone in the world that you think every time you reach out, no one is there for you. 2 amazing episodes.
The sad part about the end of episode 6 where Nellie was saying she was there the whole time and nobody could see her, is that when the family was at her wake and there was a part where the camera was shooting the kids down the aisle, Nellie is standing in the pink nightgown amongst them but no one notices her. As in, including the audience most of the time. She was there and no one even saw.
The ending of ep 6 hits different. The fact that Nell felt ignored and unseen her whole life, she kept saying nobody believed her and now that she's dead, they were all there yet fighting and not paying attention to her. Her eyes got buttons but no one was paying attention to how or when it happened, it was like she was invisible her whole life, and in her death. All she wanted was for someone to listen.. she called them all by phone and nobody replied. "I was here the whole time but nobody could see me.. why couldn't you see me?"
the fact this show was ignored by all major awards during awards season just shows how behind different award academies are. just because this is a horror show, it immediately gets ignored. this show has the best writing, direction, cinematography, performances, makeup, costume design, set design, lighting, music, etc from the last decade. period. the horror genre is the most diverse genre there is. living is a horrific act, honestly, and we're able to dive into all the nuances of the human experience through evocative horror pieces such as The Haunting of Hill House. goddamn this show is perfect.

@@ct6852 it truly is. the academies are really high-brow, and they have such antiquated views of what's worthy of laurels. the horror genre is in my opinion one of the more diverse and flexible genres, but it would seem the academies will always view them as slasher films filled with gore.
It's so crazy to think that episode 6 [the storm] only had 5 takes in it! It takes an enormous amount of coordination and talent to make that happen, and all performences were done so well.
Episode 5 is the best episode of the series. I feel so bad for Nell, who was trying to get help. And to think she was haunted by her own death her entire life is heartbreaking
Steve really said "you had 6 years to file a complaint" like they told you a million times they didn't want you to exploit their trauma and you did it anyway and why should they have to file a complaint that's literally your SIBLING not a random person on the street lmaoo

This show is a masterpiece! The whole nell's arc was to tell how we miss the call outs for help even from our closest loved ones. They are always near us/with us crying for help trying to get noticed but we always look further away and keep looking for them not knowing or acknowledging that they are right beside us.. One of the greatest shows ever imo❤️
I love how the long takes were used. They weren't just stylish but suspenseful and story-driven. In fact, the long takes wouldn't work like that if we didn't know and care about the characters. This isn't just the best horror series I've ever watched, it's one of the best series I've ever watched.
These two episodes are what made Nellie as the bent neck lady sad instead of scary for me. Poor Nellie, everything about her is just tragic. And I love that this show doesn't really do cheap jump scares. They are there, but they nearly always mean something. It isn't "startled cat jumps out at main character" nonsense. And it's done sparingly, too, so that when they come they really get you.
There are so many great facts about the making of ep 6. It was the episode they planned the whole set around, and rehearses like a play for months to get it right. Ghost Nell had white contacts on which made her almost blind, so she had to be led to and from her spots every time, and in several of the shots the kids weren't quick enough to get out of frame when they needed to, so they had crew placed out just to pick them up and run away with them. The longest of the scenes is over 15 minutes, and they could only film it a few times, because the rig for the camera didn't work right on the carpet on the floor, so it was breaking apart. Flanagan didn't tell the cast, though, he didn't want to make them nervous. In the end, there were some mistakes they had to live with. Flanagan has praised the actor of the adult dad recently, because he stumbled on his line at one time and glanced off at Mike to see if he would cut, but he gestured for him to keep going, so the dad gave a small nod and mumbled as if he was talking to the mom, then just kept on with the scene. In the end, it blended right in.
45:27 Nice of you to notice during the first scene that it was a long take. Almost the entire episode is just 5 different scenes. There's 3 with the adult actors and 2 with the younger ones. And the transitions between them are sublime. The very first cut was at 47:34 right after the chandelier falls and you see the dad from another angle. There are a few behind the scenes videos on TH-cam that show how they did this. I highly recommend checking it out. They actually planned this episode from the very beginning and were able to build the set to accomplish the shot of going from the funeral home to the house as well as the transitions to upstairs and back down. The second cut is just before 51:08 in this edit. 59:25 is the third cut. The final long scene begins at 1:02:44 and ends at 1:04:23. After that, they use normal editing for the final few minutes. The thing that makes it even better, is the story is so damn good too. It's not just camera tricks that pull you in. It was really a perfect way to tell this part of the story. This whole series is simply wonderful in that way. We had the first five episodes to establish the five children, this one brings them all back together, and from here on out we see how it all wraps up. I won't say any more about what's to come, but I really look forward to seeing your reaction to it all.
The bent neck lady reveal has to be one of the greatest reveals ever filmed in a tv series, even in movies! The shot of her falling in time showing us her perspective in hauntingly amazing .. like I've said before, this is the best horror series ever made "I was right here, and no one could see me" Goshhhh .. that line with that final shot... kills me 💔
This show gives me chills. i have rewatched so many times, and every time, it's insane. I love it so much, and it only gets better and better. I'm still mad they didnt win all the awards.
When Nellie sees her husband at Hill House, it breaks my heart. Her face says it all. The grief, the loss, the longing. Incredibly sad episode. Haunted by her own death all of her life.
And the actor for Arthur kills it in that scene as well - Arthur outside of Hill House is warm and sweet and comforting, but in Hill House it’s all false hope
One of the reasons this show is so good is because Mike Flanagan wrote, directed and edited all 10 episodes. Fun nugget: the scene where the chandelier fell is why two actors were cast to play the Dad. Fun nugget 2: Mike Flanagan was also writing the screenplay for Doctor Sleep during production. I'm sure someone mentioned it but Nell probably stopped taking her meds because of the twin thing and she probably thought that her dependence on the meds made Luke feel dependent on drugs and caused him to keep relapsing. Around the time she stopped taking her meds, he was continuously sober for 90s days. Episode 6 is my favorite in the whole show along with episode 9. I'm glad more people seem to understand that within the siblings it's not really about who is more damaged or more depressed or whatever else.
These two episodes are cinematic masterpieces. It amazes me that they managed to do such long takes for ep6, expecially with children actors, who by the way are very good. If I'm not mistaking they rehearsed It for a month before shooting.
This episode is 56 minutes long, in the first 50 minutes there are only 4 total scenes. This is a piece of pure art, from writing to lighting, casting to set design. I truly love these 56 minutes.
Two Storms, aka one of my top three favourite episodes of television ever. From the writing to the acting to the cinematography, *Chef's kiss*. Love this episode.
It’s powerful at the end, because when Nell shows up by her casket and shows back up in the flashback from disappearing during the storm, she says I was here, but nobody could see me why couldn’t anyone see me.. it’s a metaphor for how she felt in life when she called on her siblings and family for help talking about how she was struggling and that she needed them, but no matter how much she begged and pleaded and screamed and talked about it, or tried to talk about it No one had the time to listen, and nobody could see your acknowledge her pain. It’s really heartbreaking when you really sit and think about it. Every family member represents the stages of grief and struggle and it shows brilliantly through the small things the actors do and it’s just an amazing show.
The Haunting of Hill House is a book.... but this series is the loosest possible adaptation that could still bear the name. Its an entirely different story, but the themes are what Mike Flanagan worked with so brilliantly. The book is still definitely worth a read though, if you're interested in psychological horror novels, and is only around 300 pages. As you're enjoying this so much, I would highly recommend both Midnight Mass, and The Haunting of Bly Manor - both Mike Flanagan series!
My two fave episodes. The amazing reveal of the bent neck lady and the amazing shots of episode 6. There is a behind the scene for this one on TH-cam and it is phenomenal to see how much effort that went into all the continuous shots. A piece of film making art! Would also love to see you guys do a rewatch to try and spot all the ghosts and statue movements. There's supposed to be 100's In plain sight and hiding throughout the entire series. I have tried to spot them but keep getting sucked back into the story lol. Excellent reaction guys!!
Nell breaks my heart in episode 5 & 6 that poor little girl being haunted by her future death is nothing but tragic. Seeing everyone put the phone down on her when she was in such a desperate state broke my heart ...." I was right here" made me cry the 2 times I watched this series through, and just made me cry again watching you guys watch this. 😢

Sleep Paralysis is a really interesting phenomenon. It's always been one of my favorite discussions when I've taught neuropsychology. I could go on and on about it. They did an awesome job portraying it in the series.
I've had it a bunch of times. The first time was the worst (and most strange experience I've ever had) because I saw a black figure hovering over me just staring into my soul with its ice blue eyes. I was unable to move (as usual during sleep paralysis) and I think I was in that state for well over a minute. Some time during the paralysis the shadow figure vanished and I could actually start moving, but I could only crawl on the floor to get away from my room. For some strange reason I wanted to go get my dad to wake me up from the dream (I know it doesn't make sense but it somehow did when it was happening) but it turned out that part was a dream aswell because it literally felt like I was teleported back to my bed and that's when I woke up for real. Turns out I was lying in my bed the whole time. Even though I had read about sleep paralysis years prior to my first sleep paralysis I was kind of shocked how mind bending the experience can be. When the monster vanished I thought it was over and that I was awake. Because I could feel the cold from the floor when I was crawling on it. It was so hyper realistic and I never expected it to be like that. Oddly enough I've experienced sleep paralysis many times after this but none of those times came close to being as weird as my first one.
Haunting of Hill house is one of the best shows I ever watched. It is incredibly made, super well thought through. The dialogue, the shots, the dynamics, everything is amazing and the actors nailed the characters.
These two are my favorite in the series, such a gut punch but its still atmospheric and scary with added hints of melancholy. I cry every time with both episodes and future ones too.
I think it's really easy to like Luke so seeing him treat Nell like that sucks but I actually think it's really important so people can maybe sympathize with the other siblings a bit more and understand why after so many years of trying to help him they started getting more harsh with him. We don't see how often he got really ugly like that or how much worse it might have been so it's easy to get mad at Shirl or Steve when they're kinda mean to him. I think they showed us just enough that we could still easily like him but also understand where his family is coming from.
I’ve suffered from sleep paralysis off and on from middle school-and I always see shadow people or demons when it happens. I can only ever move either my neck or a leg, slightly. It takes minutes to wear off, so I’m trapped staring in the corner of the room at whatever I’m seeing as my heart feels like it’ll explode and I cry due to fear. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone…it’s very unpleasant.
For episode 5, actually it's an allegory of "inherited mental illness" when Olivia put necklace on Nell. She passed it to Nell. So no, Olivia isn't trying to kill Nell or an evil spirit.
@@loveIetteryeah I'm surprised how many people say that Olivia is evil or whatever, when I feel like the show established pretty well that the house focused on Olivia at first so that it could warp her perception of reality and kill the kids. Olivia is not evil, the house is evil.
there are some theories that nell being on meds kept luke from ever becoming clean because of the twin thing. when she throws her meds out, rehab actually works for him. it breaks my heart because it's at the expense of herself :( and even in death she's still just trying to get her family to stop fighting and see her and they still don't
After you’ve finished watching the show I can really recommend watching one of the videos about all the hidden ghosts in each episode. There’s sooo many and once you see them you start always looking for them in the background of every shot
Yes!! I’ve been looking for a comment about the hidden ghosts! I’ve read somewhere that there are a little more than 30 ghosts that you can spot in the background! Some of them are harder to see but there are a few that are quite easy to spot if you look carefully! It adds a lot of creepiness to the show, which is so cool!
When Theo fell while trying to sit on the arm of the couch, they all rushed to her because the actress found out she was pregnant. That day if I’m not mistaken. The fact this episode is Nellie’s wake, and the focus STILL isn’t on her absolutely wrecks my heart.
Yes, it is an adaptation from literature. I consider this series more inspired by Shirley Jackson's novel because it took the original premise and just ran into greatness. The movie versions can't even come close.

To answer your question from the end of episode 5, the show is very loosely based on a book of the same name by Shirley Jackson! It doesn’t have the same plot line, but a lot of character names and lines are nods to the original works. There are two movies based on the book, both called “The Haunting” one from ‘63 and the other from ‘99! Also, I’m loving your reactions to this series. It’s my favorite show of all time, and I love seeing other people experience it! Keep up the good work!
You guys HAVE to watch the behind the scenes for this episode, its absolutely amazing. They literally broke their equipment by the end of filming it and were running around like crazy trying to go back and forth between the different sets and trying to jump out of frame, having to rig up some way to keep rolling the camera over the carpet floors and everything. Its so cool to watch:)
The series is an adaptation of Shirley Jackson's novel of the same name. There was a movie made about twenty years ago called The Haunting with Liam Neeson and Catherine Zeta-Jones that was also an adaptation.

Great observation with seeing the Past/Present/Future in relation to the siblings! However, I think it's the female siblings that possess the gift. For example: Shirley= present ("Nellie's in the red room" just as Nell was in the house) Theo= past (being able to see insight to people's/things' past through touch) Nellie= future (foreseeing her death)
I've always associated with Nelly because I have a parasomnia that causes me to see people or things in my room when I'm half-asleep-half-awake, and for the longest time I was insecure and embarrassed since no one around me could relate to it, but seeing Nelly go through the same thing made me feel affirmed and encouraged me to talk with my doctor so I could finally sleep soundly.
When i have a sleep paralysis, I try to break out by moving a toe. Never know when one is going to happen, I hate them...love watching these with you guys!
You've probably already researched this by now, but this was based on a Gothic horror novel by Shirley Jackson, " The Haunting of Hill House". It was made into a very good film by Robert Wise called " the Haunting" in 1963, it was more like a creepy Gothic psychological horror film. no gore, not many jump scares but maintained a creepy and suspenseful vibe throughout. It was remade years later as a special effects horror movie that was not very good.
As I understood it, the house warps time inside it, on top of the sensitive abilities of the girls in the family: Shirley seeing things in her sleep ("Nellie's in the red room"), Theo with her touch, and Nell with her premonition (her death as BNL, Luke’s death). Speaking of Luke, I think he actually saw the BNL as well in his mind's eye through their twin thing - back in the tree house, the sketch that Steve saw of a screaming face was I'm pretty sure BNL. But Luke didn’t understand that it was Nell's vision so when Steve asked him where he got his ideas, he couldn't explain it. As for ep 6, the sets (Hill house, funeral home) were designed and built with this exact episode in mind, for the long one-takes. The longest one-take was around 16 minutes and the actors rehearsed and filmed it like a stage play. Brilliant episode and show, criminally underrated in terms of awards buzz. It made me an instant fan of Mike Flanagan.

This is officially "THE HAUNTING OF" series! Season 1 is Hill House (based off the novel by Shirley Jackson--which is where the name Shirley comes from!) and Season 2 is another adaptation of a different book called the Haunting of Bly Manor. Mike Flanagan also did Midnight Mass (which I HIGHLY recommend--it has some of my favorite monologues I've ever heard, and it's so well written and well shot that it's worth the watch), and the Midnight Club, which got cancelled after one season. This is, by far, the best show I've ever seen and my absolute favorite show of all time. There's so many subtleties and nuances that you catch on when you rewatch it. You don't even know it, but the show has already revealed it's big trick (and I'm not even talking about Nell) and you won't realize it until it's too late. There's so many thing I can't wait to point out once you get to the finale. ANYWAY, for these episodes, here's some cool info: - Episode 6 is a series of long one-shots. One of the shots is 17+ minutes long. They rehearsed it for four months before they started shooting so they could get the movements/lines down. - The scene where the mom is moving through the hallway was all done practically -- Carla Gugino and a stunt double were running from hallway to hallway while the camera and the dad tried to follow them. - The house is practical and so in the funeral home AND they're connected, so that they could do the sequences in episode six. They actually built an "elevator" so they could do the shot of the parents running down the stairs after the children start screaming.
@@ct6852 I enjoyed the Midnight Club just fine, but I think it's the weakest of Mike's work. It felt like it was targeted for a younger audience, but the idea/theme was amazing. It's... incredibly sad, and there's an episode that I absolutely adored, but I think overall, it's the bottom of the list for me. If you're a Mike Flanagan fan, it might be worth seeing, but it's no where near as nuanced or well done as Hill House or Midnight Mass, in my opinion!
This show made me cry a lot when I realized what it all meant. It's so well thought out, and a lot of shows don't go to the depths that this show does with such powerful symbolism and attention to detail.

(I have some sort of prophetic feelings where I suffer both when something terrible happens and some time before, I have reacted a few times before hand and sadly never saved anyone but prepared people for it. A little while ago I heard about someone with the same sort of prophetic gifts who saved herself from a lethal pregnancy because a doctor believed her and prepared a crash cart)

Also had sleep paralysis and chronic nightmares my whole life - all the advice Nell got no one ever told her to NEVER sleep on your back. Hardest position to regain control of your body is when you’re flat on your back
The grandma on the bed is Hazel Hill. Her reflection was the one that Luke saw through the little tube that Nell sent the buttons. She was the ghost that whispered "Clara." Also remember that the bed that she was laying on is the same bed that Theo called a "sick bed." I won't say much about the ghost kid in the wheelchair yet because he will be referenced in later episodes. It's kind of neat that the ghosts aren't really the center of attention in this series despite the fact that it's a horror series and it's called The Haunting of Hill House. Most paranormal movies often have the supernatural beings as the main antagonistic characters, but this one most of the ghosts are background characters and aren't exactly harming anyone. They're just creepy and each have a story of their own that isn't told in greater detail, although all of them fell victim to the house. If they did make another season of this, the only thing I'd want is a series about the Hill family and what happened prior to the events in this story. But all in all, this does great as a stand alone series. Keep up the good work guys. You haven't even gotten to the scariest jump scares yet. 😈
46:05 that’s exactly what it was. There’s video of behind the scenes of this episode. It took 3 months to choreograph. The sets were built specifically to be able to shoot this episode this way. The first edit doesn’t happen until the chandelier falls.
Oak's reaction at the end of Episode 5 was me. I couldn't move, staring at the screen, processing that final reveal. One of the best reveals in a horror show ever. Total brilliance.

Steve is Denial
Shirley is Anger
Theo is Bargaining
Luke is Depression
and Nellie is Acceptance
The show certainly deals with the powerful theme of what happens when a family and the individuals in it do not face the collective trauma and individual trauma they experienced at Hill House and through losing their mother in the manner they did. Their refusal to be honest with each other and to dig into what they experienced as children at Hill House haunts each of them in different ways through their entire adult lives.
I was waiting to see how much time you would take to realize that Nell's ghost was in the back on that scene around the coffin kkkkkkkkkkkkk

Nell's meds are directly connected to Luke's drug habit. Luke was really able to get clean (the 90 days) when she quit her meds in the end. So in a way, she put him before herself AGAIN - and it killed her.

Very true. I remember binge watching episodes 3, 4 and 5, but after ep 5, with Nellie's death, I just had to stop. I was so deeply shocked by how unfair and desperate it was. That she was haunted from her little kid age, throughout her life, by her own death. That the terrible events of her death night did not only ended her life, it also ruined her whole life from 6-year-old till her death. She never had a chance to have a good life, and when she started to enjoy life a little bit, it all just got even worse. A terrible, endless downward spiral.
It feels like a gut punch when her young voice says "nobody could see me" when they show her body and ghost.
Nell's story is so sad; she was marked for death as soon as she walked in to Hill House.
@@glowface79 the guys mentioned that this story is about dealing with trauma, and one terrible aspect of trauma is that the average person tends to have a threshold of how much they'll willingly believe. It seems like the more horrible a thing that happened to a person, the more skeptical the people hearing about it will get until they just listen with a doubtful smile, like Nell's family do to her whenever she tries to tell them everything. I think it's because some trauma is so huge it hurts just to know about, so it's easier to try to pretend it's made up to protect yourself from the weight of it.
Some people get a drug habit to cope with trauma, some people bury themselves in work, some people encase themselves in metaphorical ice, some people try to rationalize, some people leave. And some people, like Nell, shrink on on themselves and become invisible, perhaps still being loved by family, but never truly seen by them. Except for her husband and her equally messed-up brother. Poor Nell.
I think Nell's story is one for the silent sufferers, who go through life being empathetic and kind because they truly understand misery, but whose own pain goes unnoticed or unaided. The ones who put on a brave face, or the ones who keep their mouth shut because they simply can't stand to be disbelieved yet again. It's absolutely devastating, but the portrayal is so beautiful and nuanced
What's cool is that there was actually no editing or transitions for the first 15 minutes of episode 6. It was all done in one take. Super impressive on everyones part.
Its been done a bunch of times in shows and movies but still to this day this remains one of the best most impressive single shots I've seen.

The metaphor for depression in episode 6 is unbeatable. That last scene from young Nell summarizes her feelings and sadness: "I was here, i was right here... I was screaming and shouting but none of you could see me. Nobody can see me"

After that whole episode, and those before it, that line delivery, with her dead self standing next to her coffin... it's a serious gut punch.
It actually was young Nell seeing from the POV of her older dead self, hence yelled jumped and screamed, but no body could see her.

not sure if you guys caught this but the reason Nell dumped her pills was so that Luke could get well. she could see that he was not himself, even in the car when he was asking her to get her drugs. that wasn't Luke talking, that was the monkey on his back craving heroin. because of their "Twin Thing", she knew that as long as she was taking her meds, he would never be able to get clean so she made the ultimate sacrifice to save her twin brother. beautiful and tragic. ❤
I like it but I can’t buy it. there was no defining moment for me that would cause Nell to dispose of her meds due to the twin connection. Instead, I think it was right after she saw the bent neck lady and decided that she had to face it/deal with it.
She was taking the meds to escape the Bent Neck Lady. Then despite taking meds, she still saw her.
@@realSimoneCherie that’s also a valid theory but I think that since both things happened at the same time, both are plausible. The Bent Neck Lady only shows up at significant moments in Nellie’s life and that moment was significant for a reason. I think it was when she realized her brother would never get well as long as she was taking meds. with the twin connection, he felt what she felt so when she was drugged up, so was he. she even gives a hint in the next scene when she explains to the Psychiatrist that she could feel Luke’s withdrawal symptoms until they finally stopped.

One of the issues that Nell and Luke had is that they had a "twin thing" as they call it. What Nell felt, Luke felt. Which is why he felt his neck hurt and began to feel cold while being sober on the night Nell died. But Nell also felt Luke. Which is why she was having a medication problem. It's a vicious circle. Nell fed Luke's pain and Luke fed Nell's pain. It went on and on back and forth. Luke got sober because Nell was happily married for a while. But then bad things happened again and it began to fall apart for them both. 👫
actually by the time nell was happy, luke was having problems with addiction and when nell was off meds and getting worse, luke was getting clean. The neverending cycle of pain for them. And Nell decided to stop with the medicine so like could be better. She was REALLY selfless...
“But nobody could see me” always gets me. Imagine feeling so alone in the world that you think every time you reach out, no one is there for you. 2 amazing episodes.
The sad part about the end of episode 6 where Nellie was saying she was there the whole time and nobody could see her, is that when the family was at her wake and there was a part where the camera was shooting the kids down the aisle, Nellie is standing in the pink nightgown amongst them but no one notices her. As in, including the audience most of the time. She was there and no one even saw.
The ending of ep 6 hits different. The fact that Nell felt ignored and unseen her whole life, she kept saying nobody believed her and now that she's dead, they were all there yet fighting and not paying attention to her. Her eyes got buttons but no one was paying attention to how or when it happened, it was like she was invisible her whole life, and in her death. All she wanted was for someone to listen.. she called them all by phone and nobody replied.

the fact this show was ignored by all major awards during awards season just shows how behind different award academies are. just because this is a horror show, it immediately gets ignored. this show has the best writing, direction, cinematography, performances, makeup, costume design, set design, lighting, music, etc from the last decade. period. the horror genre is the most diverse genre there is. living is a horrific act, honestly, and we're able to dive into all the nuances of the human experience through evocative horror pieces such as The Haunting of Hill House. goddamn this show is perfect.

@@ct6852 it truly is. the academies are really high-brow, and they have such antiquated views of what's worthy of laurels. the horror genre is in my opinion one of the more diverse and flexible genres, but it would seem the academies will always view them as slasher films filled with gore.
It's so crazy to think that episode 6 [the storm] only had 5 takes in it! It takes an enormous amount of coordination and talent to make that happen, and all performences were done so well.

Episode 5 is the best episode of the series. I feel so bad for Nell, who was trying to get help. And to think she was haunted by her own death her entire life is heartbreaking

The Bent Neck Lady reveal was one of the wildest scenes/concepts I've ever seen!
This show is a masterpiece! The whole nell's arc was to tell how we miss the call outs for help even from our closest loved ones. They are always near us/with us crying for help trying to get noticed but we always look further away and keep looking for them not knowing or acknowledging that they are right beside us..

I love how the long takes were used. They weren't just stylish but suspenseful and story-driven. In fact, the long takes wouldn't work like that if we didn't know and care about the characters. This isn't just the best horror series I've ever watched, it's one of the best series I've ever watched.
These two episodes are what made Nellie as the bent neck lady sad instead of scary for me. Poor Nellie, everything about her is just tragic. And I love that this show doesn't really do cheap jump scares. They are there, but they nearly always mean something. It isn't "startled cat jumps out at main character" nonsense. And it's done sparingly, too, so that when they come they really get you.
There are so many great facts about the making of ep 6. It was the episode they planned the whole set around, and rehearses like a play for months to get it right. Ghost Nell had white contacts on which made her almost blind, so she had to be led to and from her spots every time, and in several of the shots the kids weren't quick enough to get out of frame when they needed to, so they had crew placed out just to pick them up and run away with them. The longest of the scenes is over 15 minutes, and they could only film it a few times, because the rig for the camera didn't work right on the carpet on the floor, so it was breaking apart. Flanagan didn't tell the cast, though, he didn't want to make them nervous. In the end, there were some mistakes they had to live with. Flanagan has praised the actor of the adult dad recently, because he stumbled on his line at one time and glanced off at Mike to see if he would cut, but he gestured for him to keep going, so the dad gave a small nod and mumbled as if he was talking to the mom, then just kept on with the scene. In the end, it blended right in.
45:27 Nice of you to notice during the first scene that it was a long take. Almost the entire episode is just 5 different scenes. There's 3 with the adult actors and 2 with the younger ones. And the transitions between them are sublime. The very first cut was at 47:34 right after the chandelier falls and you see the dad from another angle. There are a few behind the scenes videos on TH-cam that show how they did this. I highly recommend checking it out. They actually planned this episode from the very beginning and were able to build the set to accomplish the shot of going from the funeral home to the house as well as the transitions to upstairs and back down. The second cut is just before 51:08 in this edit. 59:25 is the third cut. The final long scene begins at 1:02:44 and ends at 1:04:23. After that, they use normal editing for the final few minutes.
The thing that makes it even better, is the story is so damn good too. It's not just camera tricks that pull you in. It was really a perfect way to tell this part of the story. This whole series is simply wonderful in that way. We had the first five episodes to establish the five children, this one brings them all back together, and from here on out we see how it all wraps up. I won't say any more about what's to come, but I really look forward to seeing your reaction to it all.
The bent neck lady reveal has to be one of the greatest reveals ever filmed in a tv series, even in movies! The shot of her falling in time showing us her perspective in hauntingly amazing .. like I've said before, this is the best horror series ever made

This show gives me chills. i have rewatched so many times, and every time, it's insane. I love it so much, and it only gets better and better. I'm still mad they didnt win all the awards.
When Nellie sees her husband at Hill House, it breaks my heart. Her face says it all. The grief, the loss, the longing. Incredibly sad episode.

And the actor for Arthur kills it in that scene as well - Arthur outside of Hill House is warm and sweet and comforting, but in Hill House it’s all false hope
One of the reasons this show is so good is because Mike Flanagan wrote, directed and edited all 10 episodes. Fun nugget: the scene where the chandelier fell is why two actors were cast to play the Dad. Fun nugget 2: Mike Flanagan was also writing the screenplay for Doctor Sleep during production. Thank you so much for reacting to this show.
I'm sure someone mentioned it but Nell probably stopped taking her meds because of the twin thing and she probably thought that her dependence on the meds made Luke feel dependent on drugs and caused him to keep relapsing. Around the time she stopped taking her meds, he was continuously sober for 90s days. Episode 6 is my favorite in the whole show along with episode 9. I'm glad more people seem to understand that within the siblings it's not really about who is more damaged or more depressed or whatever else.
These two episodes are cinematic masterpieces. It amazes me that they managed to do such long takes for ep6, expecially with children actors, who by the way are very good. If I'm not mistaking they rehearsed It for a month before shooting.
This episode is 56 minutes long, in the first 50 minutes there are only 4 total scenes. This is a piece of pure art, from writing to lighting, casting to set design. I truly love these 56 minutes.

Two Storms, aka one of my top three favourite episodes of television ever. From the writing to the acting to the cinematography, *Chef's kiss*. Love this episode.
It’s powerful at the end, because when Nell shows up by her casket and shows back up in the flashback from disappearing during the storm, she says I was here, but nobody could see me why couldn’t anyone see me.. it’s a metaphor for how she felt in life when she called on her siblings and family for help talking about how she was struggling and that she needed them, but no matter how much she begged and pleaded and screamed and talked about it, or tried to talk about it No one had the time to listen, and nobody could see your acknowledge her pain. It’s really heartbreaking when you really sit and think about it. Every family member represents the stages of grief and struggle and it shows brilliantly through the small things the actors do and it’s just an amazing show.

The Haunting of Hill House is a book.... but this series is the loosest possible adaptation that could still bear the name. Its an entirely different story, but the themes are what Mike Flanagan worked with so brilliantly. The book is still definitely worth a read though, if you're interested in psychological horror novels, and is only around 300 pages.
As you're enjoying this so much, I would highly recommend both Midnight Mass, and The Haunting of Bly Manor - both Mike Flanagan series!
Yeah, pretty much the only thing the book and show have in common are some of the character names - Theo, Luke, and the Dudleys.
My two fave episodes. The amazing reveal of the bent neck lady and the amazing shots of episode 6. There is a behind the scene for this one on TH-cam and it is phenomenal to see how much effort that went into all the continuous shots. A piece of film making art! Would also love to see you guys do a rewatch to try and spot all the ghosts and statue movements. There's supposed to be 100's In plain sight and hiding throughout the entire series. I have tried to spot them but keep getting sucked back into the story lol. Excellent reaction guys!!
Nell breaks my heart in episode 5 & 6 that poor little girl being haunted by her future death is nothing but tragic. Seeing everyone put the phone down on her when she was in such a desperate state broke my heart ...." I was right here" made me cry the 2 times I watched this series through, and just made me cry again watching you guys watch this. 😢

Sleep Paralysis is a really interesting phenomenon. It's always been one of my favorite discussions when I've taught neuropsychology.
I could go on and on about it. They did an awesome job portraying it in the series.
It's very horrible experience. It was very frequent when I was young . It always left me with a anxiety.
I've had it a bunch of times. The first time was the worst (and most strange experience I've ever had) because I saw a black figure hovering over me just staring into my soul with its ice blue eyes. I was unable to move (as usual during sleep paralysis) and I think I was in that state for well over a minute. Some time during the paralysis the shadow figure vanished and I could actually start moving, but I could only crawl on the floor to get away from my room. For some strange reason I wanted to go get my dad to wake me up from the dream (I know it doesn't make sense but it somehow did when it was happening) but it turned out that part was a dream aswell because it literally felt like I was teleported back to my bed and that's when I woke up for real. Turns out I was lying in my bed the whole time. Even though I had read about sleep paralysis years prior to my first sleep paralysis I was kind of shocked how mind bending the experience can be. When the monster vanished I thought it was over and that I was awake. Because I could feel the cold from the floor when I was crawling on it. It was so hyper realistic and I never expected it to be like that.
Oddly enough I've experienced sleep paralysis many times after this but none of those times came close to being as weird as my first one.
Haunting of Hill house is one of the best shows I ever watched. It is incredibly made, super well thought through. The dialogue, the shots, the dynamics, everything is amazing and the actors nailed the characters.
These two are my favorite in the series, such a gut punch but its still atmospheric and scary with added hints of melancholy. I cry every time with both episodes and future ones too.
The end of Episode 6 gave me CHILLS and made me so emotional 😢 poor Nellie!

I think it's really easy to like Luke so seeing him treat Nell like that sucks but I actually think it's really important so people can maybe sympathize with the other siblings a bit more and understand why after so many years of trying to help him they started getting more harsh with him. We don't see how often he got really ugly like that or how much worse it might have been so it's easy to get mad at Shirl or Steve when they're kinda mean to him. I think they showed us just enough that we could still easily like him but also understand where his family is coming from.
I’ve suffered from sleep paralysis off and on from middle school-and I always see shadow people or demons when it happens. I can only ever move either my neck or a leg, slightly. It takes minutes to wear off, so I’m trapped staring in the corner of the room at whatever I’m seeing as my heart feels like it’ll explode and I cry due to fear. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone…it’s very unpleasant.
For episode 5, actually it's an allegory of "inherited mental illness" when Olivia put necklace on Nell. She passed it to Nell. So no, Olivia isn't trying to kill Nell or an evil spirit.

there are some theories that nell being on meds kept luke from ever becoming clean because of the twin thing. when she throws her meds out, rehab actually works for him. it breaks my heart because it's at the expense of herself :( and even in death she's still just trying to get her family to stop fighting and see her and they still don't

After you’ve finished watching the show I can really recommend watching one of the videos about all the hidden ghosts in each episode. There’s sooo many and once you see them you start always looking for them in the background of every shot
Yes!! I’ve been looking for a comment about the hidden ghosts! I’ve read somewhere that there are a little more than 30 ghosts that you can spot in the background! Some of them are harder to see but there are a few that are quite easy to spot if you look carefully! It adds a lot of creepiness to the show, which is so cool!

Yes, it is an adaptation from literature. I consider this series more inspired by Shirley Jackson's novel because it took the original premise and just ran into greatness. The movie versions can't even come close.

To answer your question from the end of episode 5, the show is very loosely based on a book of the same name by Shirley Jackson! It doesn’t have the same plot line, but a lot of character names and lines are nods to the original works. There are two movies based on the book, both called “The Haunting” one from ‘63 and the other from ‘99!
Also, I’m loving your reactions to this series. It’s my favorite show of all time, and I love seeing other people experience it! Keep up the good work!
The '99 version is trash but the '63 version is good, quite close to the novel.
One of the longest one shots in TV. 15 minutes.

You guys HAVE to watch the behind the scenes for this episode, its absolutely amazing. They literally broke their equipment by the end of filming it and were running around like crazy trying to go back and forth between the different sets and trying to jump out of frame, having to rig up some way to keep rolling the camera over the carpet floors and everything. Its so cool to watch:)
The series is an adaptation of Shirley Jackson's novel of the same name. There was a movie made about twenty years ago called The Haunting with Liam Neeson and Catherine Zeta-Jones that was also an adaptation.

Great observation with seeing the Past/Present/Future in relation to the siblings! However, I think it's the female siblings that possess the gift. For example:
Shirley= present ("Nellie's in the red room" just as Nell was in the house)
Theo= past (being able to see insight to people's/things' past through touch)
Nellie= future (foreseeing her death)

I've always associated with Nelly because I have a parasomnia that causes me to see people or things in my room when I'm half-asleep-half-awake, and for the longest time I was insecure and embarrassed since no one around me could relate to it, but seeing Nelly go through the same thing made me feel affirmed and encouraged me to talk with my doctor so I could finally sleep soundly.
When i have a sleep paralysis, I try to break out by moving a toe. Never know when one is going to happen, I hate them...love watching these with you guys!
I guess I won't ever get how this series could get totally snubbed at the Emmy Awards in 2019.

You've probably already researched this by now, but this was based on a Gothic horror novel by Shirley Jackson, " The Haunting of Hill House". It was made into a very good film by Robert Wise called " the Haunting" in 1963, it was more like a creepy Gothic psychological horror film. no gore, not many jump scares but maintained a creepy and suspenseful vibe throughout. It was remade years later as a special effects horror movie that was not very good.
The 1963 movie is one of my lifelong favorites. Few movies have disappointed me the way the 1999 remake did.
As I understood it, the house warps time inside it, on top of the sensitive abilities of the girls in the family: Shirley seeing things in her sleep ("Nellie's in the red room"), Theo with her touch, and Nell with her premonition (her death as BNL, Luke’s death). Speaking of Luke, I think he actually saw the BNL as well in his mind's eye through their twin thing - back in the tree house, the sketch that Steve saw of a screaming face was I'm pretty sure BNL. But Luke didn’t understand that it was Nell's vision so when Steve asked him where he got his ideas, he couldn't explain it.
As for ep 6, the sets (Hill house, funeral home) were designed and built with this exact episode in mind, for the long one-takes. The longest one-take was around 16 minutes and the actors rehearsed and filmed it like a stage play. Brilliant episode and show, criminally underrated in terms of awards buzz. It made me an instant fan of Mike Flanagan.
If you like haunting of Hill house you absolutely MUST watch the haunting of bly manor and midnight mass after this!! Midnight club too! Mike Flanagan (the writer/producer) is a genius!!! And he and Kate Siegel (Theo) are married in real life. !!!!!❤ thanks for doing these u guys!

This is the best Horror type thing I've ever seen. Well done Mike Flanagan.
This is officially "THE HAUNTING OF" series! Season 1 is Hill House (based off the novel by Shirley Jackson--which is where the name Shirley comes from!) and Season 2 is another adaptation of a different book called the Haunting of Bly Manor. Mike Flanagan also did Midnight Mass (which I HIGHLY recommend--it has some of my favorite monologues I've ever heard, and it's so well written and well shot that it's worth the watch), and the Midnight Club, which got cancelled after one season.
This is, by far, the best show I've ever seen and my absolute favorite show of all time. There's so many subtleties and nuances that you catch on when you rewatch it. You don't even know it, but the show has already revealed it's big trick (and I'm not even talking about Nell) and you won't realize it until it's too late. There's so many thing I can't wait to point out once you get to the finale.
ANYWAY, for these episodes, here's some cool info:
- Episode 6 is a series of long one-shots. One of the shots is 17+ minutes long. They rehearsed it for four months before they started shooting so they could get the movements/lines down.
- The scene where the mom is moving through the hallway was all done practically -- Carla Gugino and a stunt double were running from hallway to hallway while the camera and the dad tried to follow them.
- The house is practical and so in the funeral home AND they're connected, so that they could do the sequences in episode six. They actually built an "elevator" so they could do the shot of the parents running down the stairs after the children start screaming.
Saw all of them except Midnight Club. Is it worth watching?
@@ct6852 I enjoyed the Midnight Club just fine, but I think it's the weakest of Mike's work. It felt like it was targeted for a younger audience, but the idea/theme was amazing. It's... incredibly sad, and there's an episode that I absolutely adored, but I think overall, it's the bottom of the list for me. If you're a Mike Flanagan fan, it might be worth seeing, but it's no where near as nuanced or well done as Hill House or Midnight Mass, in my opinion!
This show made me cry a lot when I realized what it all meant. It's so well thought out, and a lot of shows don't go to the depths that this show does with such powerful symbolism and attention to detail.
every episode hits so much differently on second attempt, like when I think about "feelings" I had after they come true.
(I have some sort of prophetic feelings where I suffer both when something terrible happens and some time before, I have reacted a few times before hand and sadly never saved anyone but prepared people for it. A little while ago I heard about someone with the same sort of prophetic gifts who saved herself from a lethal pregnancy because a doctor believed her and prepared a crash cart)

I like that you guys noticed the lack of cuts in the Two Storms episode. It’s probably my favorite fun fact from this show lol that they completely designed the set around this episode because they wanted them to be able to move from house to house with no cuts

Also had sleep paralysis and chronic nightmares my whole life - all the advice Nell got no one ever told her to NEVER sleep on your back. Hardest position to regain control of your body is when you’re flat on your back
The grandma on the bed is Hazel Hill. Her reflection was the one that Luke saw through the little tube that Nell sent the buttons. She was the ghost that whispered "Clara." Also remember that the bed that she was laying on is the same bed that Theo called a "sick bed." I won't say much about the ghost kid in the wheelchair yet because he will be referenced in later episodes. It's kind of neat that the ghosts aren't really the center of attention in this series despite the fact that it's a horror series and it's called The Haunting of Hill House. Most paranormal movies often have the supernatural beings as the main antagonistic characters, but this one most of the ghosts are background characters and aren't exactly harming anyone. They're just creepy and each have a story of their own that isn't told in greater detail, although all of them fell victim to the house. If they did make another season of this, the only thing I'd want is a series about the Hill family and what happened prior to the events in this story. But all in all, this does great as a stand alone series. Keep up the good work guys. You haven't even gotten to the scariest jump scares yet. 😈

46:05 that’s exactly what it was. There’s video of behind the scenes of this episode. It took 3 months to choreograph. The sets were built specifically to be able to shoot this episode this way. The first edit doesn’t happen until the chandelier falls.

Oak's reaction at the end of Episode 5 was me. I couldn't move, staring at the screen, processing that final reveal. One of the best reveals in a horror show ever. Total brilliance.
