I have played this guitar. I was Gary Moors security when he came to Lincoln uk in the mid 70's. I was in the dressing room before the show just chatting and Gary was loosening his fingers up and I asked if this was the same guitar that played Albatros etc and he said yes. I asked if I could have a little play and he without hesitation let, what a treat to play!
This guitar was not used to record Albatross, according to Peter Greens own account, he used a white Stratocaster with which he recorded all the different parts, including the slide parts.🤔🤨🙄
does peter actually remember or recall anything
@@BARKINGattheMOON100 I read an article in Guitarist in the early 90's that he said the main parts was a strat and some of the little fills where the LP.
@@BARKINGattheMOON100 Peter also stated that he used a strat to play the main melody, and a les paul for the harmonies.
@@BARKINGattheMOON100 But in his doku, he said 2 LPs, Danny and me.
Peter Green, one of the most tasteful blues guitarists that walked the earth. That gentle touch, that distinctive sound. Thanks for all the contributions to music Peter! RIP PG
@@fredriksvard2603, thank you 🙏
I couldn’t agree more mate, God Bless him 🙏🏻 👍🏻
Now owned by Kirk Hammett ‘
BB King said Peter Greens blues guitar ran chills up and down his spine. Coming from BB King, who was a blues guitar legend himself, that is a great compliment.
I was given the privilege of playing this guitar when our blues band supported John Mayall and
when PG was with him. It was a magical occasion and Peter was very generous in allowing me to play it. I have never played anything like it since.
i call bs
Such a pleasure to listen to this man, and very moving too. I can't imagine that there's a better or more deserving custodian of this iconic guitar. Proper geezer, and a great player.
Kirk hammett from Metallica owns it now.
Great listening to him talk about the history of the guitar, and he's a really impressive player as well!
That guitar is more famous than most musicians!
Yup. good ol" Greeny looks fun to play too.
Hahahaa. So true. And probably will stay more famous after all the owners had passed.
Sacrilege! Peter Green and Gary Moore were both pretty famous.
I wonder if turntables will have the exorbitant prices these old guitars have when 80s and 90s kids reach middle age
if its the original the legend goes Gary Moore sold peter greens to settle a law suit he was involved for recording still got the blues a german group originaly did a song that sounded similar to garys so they sued him and shure enough it was there melody so he had to pay the royaltie which was too much for gary so he sold the guitar to pay then got another guitar exactly like it so peters lespaul belongs to someone else
Phil Harris deserves to be the curator of this guitar -- he is truly fantastic as a player and has an unparalleled enthusiasm for music and this Les Paul in particular. It's astonishing he wasn't using pedals during the last song he played, too -- really shows how good amps respond to harmonic information and how that can only be a part of your electric guitar playing with good equipment.
You don’t need no damn pedals
Hi,
I spent a lot of time with Peter from 1998 to 2005 when working for Fender UK. The story about the pick up coming back from repair having been placed the “wrong” way around is as he explained it to me. I don’t know about the re winding but I chuckle to myself knowing a legend has grown from a mistake😂
Damn Phil, you do a great justice to that guitar! Loved the opening cut and also "All Your Love". Thanks for the history lesson on a classic guitar that has been such an important part of music history.
Man, there are very few guitars where the special tone really comes through on a youtube video. THIS ONE HERE??
It is undeniable.
I can honestly say that this is, without question, the best done, most interesting and informative review I have ever seen - period. Well done Phil.
Interesting, and fun listening to the history. Why would anyone give this a thumbs down? They must be too young to know the names.
Unaware of Mr Harris until now; what a thoroughly nice chap and what a wonderful review of this iconic guitar. Thank you.
Ive loved this guitar since i was 18yrs old.. im 67 !!
And believe me people.. Pete green Dont want this guitar back, he said it broke his heart once and it aint going to do it again !
+Niagara Tim BS Get your facts right befor commenting...
+Niagara Tim it's a quote from greeny on the back cover of the man of the world dvd!!!
Peter Green has had a very troubled life, even by rock 'n' roll standards, I doubt he was really in his right mind when he sold it...I get the impression that Les Paul holds painful memories for him, since he rarely speaks about it, and only very briefly when he does.
I met Peter a few years back. He was bemused that anyone would pay that much for a guitar in a knackered state - the thing was a mess when GM sold it.
He hated the neck, too thick for him - he preferred Eric's Beano guitar, and he likes his guitars to be pristine.
somebodyelseuk yeah Gary didn’t exactly treat it with kid gloves...
I used to see Peter Green play in Guildford and at the Angel Hotel in Godalming--a long time ago! My favourite recording of Peter Green is "Supernatural". I still find it hard to believe that a guitar can have that much sustain and soul. Delighted to see that it is back in England with Phil Harris--great story!
Right, without any pedals!
what a wonderful interview and demo of ONE hell of a guitar !!!! wonderful tone and wonderful playing !!
lol, I didnt realize that commenting on a TH-cam video would put my comment on here lol, I'm a huge fan of guitars and guitarists, the history of this particular guitar is VERY impressive as is the tone of the Les Paul
I like to listen to his guitar in front of the sunset... Lowering the volume to the minimum!...
Excellent!
Not sure which was nicer, the guitar or the amp.
Beautifully done. Came across this by accident. Peter is one if my all time favorite guitarists and to hear this guitar played by such a deserving caretaker and caring ambassador of what it stands for makes me very happy. Excellent guitar playing, too!!
Does it really matter which Les Paul is the greatest or not, the Peter Green one is one hell of a tone monster, and superbly played by Phil Harris. Thanks Phil for sharing it with us Les Paul fanatics.
An absolute joy to listen to from a man who genuinely loves the guitar.
wow. excellent video. I remember reading about this guitar a few months back when reading about Peter Green's tone. It sounds amazing. If i owned this i would never leave the house.
It's a pleasure to see/hear it on TH-cam! Thanks for sharing this! I saw it covered in the Guitar & Bass Magazine, but this is even more fantastic.
Brilliant video.. I to have met Peter green and he is a gentleman, i shook his hand and it was the smallest gentle hand i
have ever felt, i shown him my 'Then play on' album i'd bought in 69 and i opened it up to show Peter the inside picture..
pointing at the picture Peter said 'is that me'? Yes i said, blimey he said.. then wrote his name carefully under it !!
Happy Days...
Sounds like you got a chubby when you your eyes met and you touched his small, gentle hand... geez
@@timothyh6670 Wow...is that where your mind went ? Geez.
Hey Phil great playing - just watching this clip has taught me so much. At the grand old age of 63 that's important as I am running out of time to learn to play blues guitar. :-)
Some of us may not like the fact that Kirk Hammett now ownes Greeny, but after watching an interview with him about this guitar I realised for him it's not like some rich collector's trophy, but he actually admires Peter Green very much, as well as Gary Moore. Also, he appeared on the recent P. Green tribute concert and performed The Green Manalishi, alongside Mick Fleetwood and many others. It seems his musical roots are somehow pretty much based on the British blues/rock history...
Why would anyone have a problem with him owning it? Bizarre
@@ibnsina9486 late comment but on the Les Paul pages on facebook lots of people hate the fact that Kirk owns the guitar and feels he doesnt deserve it.
huge snobs tbh at least he's playing the guitar live not like leaving it in the vault
I absolutely love Phil. He's so humble beyond words man. Such an inspiration!
This fellow is wonderfully articulate and does a fabulous job of both demo-ing and philosophizing. To those who complain it's not being used, it is being used by being so nicely demonstrated on youtube to thousands of interested people. If one guy had it and played it at his local tavern Saturday nights, would that be an improvement?
Well said.
Now owned by Kirk Hammett
A stunning story and fantastic to see that most famous of guitars in good hands! I wondered what happened to it after Gary Moore passed on. Please take care of it Phil. I'm great lover of Peter Green - best British blues player ever! Amazing how such a knock around can sound so great.
I just love the sound of this guitar. You can really pick it out on record, whether Peter or Gary is playing it.
I've never thought about it this way before, but the neck pickup is essentially wired the same as the middle pickup is on a strat, which when you combine it in parallel with either the neck or bridgein those in-between positions, you get the out of phase sound.
The same exact this is whats happening on this guitar, but they're humbuckers so it sounds a bit different
i just got burst buckers put in my epiphone 335 and they sound just like that out of phase sound with both of pickups on full vol , not sure if i like that yet
I can watch this over and over again.
What a wonderful insight into the original sounds and of our world back then. Cheers for the memories.
Wow, excellent story and this guitar is in good hands. Nice of the owner to send it back to our great neighbors in UK. A very unselfish act and I commend him. I subbed and I absolutely love your guitar style!
This guitar has been in Kirk Hammett’s hands for over 3 years and played extensively
This is great, lovely playing and great he knows so much about the history of the guitar.
Brilliant Phil...thank you. What a pleasure to sit, listen and watch you wax lyrical and coax some beautiful original tones from PG's LP. A privilege indeed.
Great interview, the love and admiration for, not just this amazing guitar, but the man who first played it comes though with such sincerity. Nice one Phil.
Its great that this guitar is still being used, live and in studio
It's dying a slow horrible death in Hammets hands. What a waste of a beautiful guitar being buried in wah and distortion.
@@craigpoole2602 boo hoo
@@booshting3520 I'm not crying about it. It's just a waste of a great guitar.
@@craigpoole2602 you obviously don't know much about Kirk Hammett and his love for Peter Green. Instead of putting it in a some glass prison, he's letting her sing - who cares if it has an occasional wah or distortion? She was meant to be played, by a TRUE fan.
This is one of greatest videos on TH-cam. I've watched it a dozen times. Very inspiring. I'm on my third tweed Deluxe build because of this video. The tones coming off "Greeny" and that Lazy J amp are amazing.
The "cracked headstock" was a little more serious than Phil makes out. In Gary's shunt, the neck ended up in 3/4 pieces & Gary ended up in hospital. The repair involved pretty much the complete re-assembly of the neck, re-assembly of the fretboard, replaced binding, lots of careful gluing and a metal pin or 2. How do I know this? My brother was the repairer.
(continued in next post)
Nice
Wow that's a cool,story that's true obviously
When Gary woke up in the hospital did he frantically ask how the guitar was doing?
Of course he was
This tale contains creative licence. How would I know ? Well I was a part of Gary's management team at the time and the driver of the car although stationary at the time of the accident. The ''Albatross'' Les Paul Guitar was repaired by Chandler Guitars then in West London near Kew.I think it was always ''borrowed'' never actually given by Peter Green.
Fantastic...what a lovely humble guy, and so interesting. Thank you, Phil.
I hear passion,respect and love...what a nice video...ahhh that neck tone..
Seems to me, not for Gary moore thought!:-( Awesome Les Paul:-)
Brilliant narrative on the guitars' storied history and the men that made so much wonderful music with it. Thanks for sharing.
RIP Peter Green
RIP Gary Moore too. They both made history on this guitar. I think Gary played it with B.B. King too.
@@shawnmcvey7789 RIP Eddie Van Hallen
This video was posted on my 33 birthday. This is also one of my favorite bursts in rock history.
(continued from previous post)
Before the cries of "sacrilege" start, this was in the early 80's, and the the aim of the repair was to make a working instrument out of something so badly damaged that the previous repairers that had seen it had all suggested a complete neck replacement. As such, a few visible scars on an otherwise original neck wasn't a problem.
In any case, Gary was satisfied enough to employ my bro' as his guitar tech for several years...
All of this added play-ability by such legends just makes the guitar more special!
First class video. Thanks very much for the knowledge, presentation, playing skills and sharing with us Peter Greens guitar.
Fantastic story Phil ,thank you .
Great knowledge of two great guitarists, and a great player you are, thanks for the information on peters Les Paul that Gary played on his Blues for Greeny Album, great tribute to Peter.R.I.P to them both.🎶🌹
Thx Phil... This is one of the best clips I've seen on youtube. You are multi-versed and multi-talented! Fascinating as well!
Thank You to whomever owns this guitar today for allowing it to be shown and played you spent a lot of money on it and you have the right as owner to do whatever you want with it but I tip my hat to you for sharing it with all the Peter Green ,Gary Moore ,and Les Paul fans.
kirk hammett
Fascinating video - great anecdotes and playing examples.
Well done.
Excellent video, many thanks. Late night TH-cam browsing always comes up with some absolute gems.
If ever there was a guitar perfectly matched to a human THIS is it! The sound, the TONE of this magnificent Les Paul married to the way Peter Green sang is amazing, especially live. So hard to describe tone but this guitar has that certain "nasal" ring to it, spiritually moving. I'm getting a "Greenie" custom pickup made by Seymour Duncan for my Les Paul, I hope it comes close. This is a great video, thank you.
Did they end up pleasing ur ears?
@@greenmanalishi6963 Yes, , a great sounding Pickup.
I got to play this Les Paul back in the early 70’s. Wonderful guitar! This was when Peter spent some time partying and jamming at my band house near Detroit. Peter will remember this for sure, he had Nigel Watson with him. Nigel was too funny, as was Peter… Great memories...
Rest In Peace Peter Green
That was sweet all the way around. I like the mention of Peter's human touch. No gadgets or tricks. Your insights were fascinating. Thanks a lot.
Awesome! Thank you!
This may be the best sounding Les Paul ever made.
Tim Murphy I'm a bit late to this comment section but I'd agree that this and Paul kossofs are beautiful sounding guitars. Also Jimmy pages 59 aswell
Woody81 was about to mention Kossoff’s burst until I saw you already did... fantastic sounding LP. Although my personal favorite was the ‘58 Darkburst that he played in many of the Free live footage, which was auctioned off for charity in the early 2000’s by Paul Rodgers. Something about that particular LP has not been replicated even in the other Les Pauls that Kossoff played, and he had at least three.
It is.
Yeah you be wasting your money on the reissue one.
@@danielvasquez8830 lol
I bought a '63 lefty strat off Phil,Sold it years ago,Doyle Bramhall has it now. Phil Harris has some great stories to share, and I really enjoyed meeting him.
This is the guitar of my absolute favorite player! Gary Moore, I'm so glad to hear and see it's history from the perfect custodian of it!!
Such a nice thing to see. Love, respect, appreciation and astonishment at an amazing piece and time of history. And to hear someone who doesn't just make the guitar a fetishised piece of luxury for the super rich, but explains not just the now mythologised nerd reasons .. the pick up windings, tone knobs etc. but the humanity of it all.. How the instrument became what it is because of the people who met it. Love it .
Wonderful stuff!
I assume the second strap hole was drilled because the original one gave out, i.e. the screw had worn in the cavity and become very loose. The person responsible didn't fancy plugging it properly to make the screw snug again, preferring instead to go for the security of a fresh, new screw seating.
Absolutely fantastic. Peter is one of my main inspirations and what a guitar. I'm happy a player like Phil has it. Thanks for a great overview.
This guitar needs NO Pedals....It needs a semi clean tone and an articulate player.
@GROOVE ECHO a fate worse than meth...
It’d sound fine with pedals too....

the name of the amplifier used in this video
It is a Lazy J. A great British amp.
wedge antilles
Thank you
It's a lazy J 20 to be specific. It may be a 40 but I think unlikely.
Kirk Hammett owns this guitar now. He said Gary Moore had put this guitar in his trunk (boot) and got rear-ended and broke the headstock off. Once fixed he said it sounded better than before. I would love to be able to play this wonderful piece just once.
hahaha... yes ... all Les Pauls sound better after a headstock break!
Enjoyed this video enormously. Many thanks. Peter Green is my guitar hero (and what a voice). He was the epitome of cool blues.
thanks Phil, watched the vid a second time and enjoyed even more.
This is magical. I am off to 180 my neck pickup.
Pretty damn right: the human factor does it all. I recently put all my gear away, took back my old Vox AC4, plugged in my Les Paul/Strat/Tele and off we go, back to the roots. Great clean/overdriven sounds, the whole range, reacting to picking velocity. Sheer pleasure !
One of the best Les Paul related videos on the net. Great stories. Thanks for sharing.
he should have a channel just telling guitar stories lol...I'd sub
This has got to be the greatest Les Paul ever made - so sweet sounding!
The good old days of real tone. Nothing will beat it.
I reversed the magnet on the neck pup on my 57Custom Vos - no need to reverse the pup in the body. It sounds absolutely wonderful.
thanks for the story of greens guitar love it!!
Great explanation and RIP Peter Green - you made this guitar haunting and ethereal.
Yea I enjoy peter greens music any day over GM.
So...
Edad Pops , whoopie for you.

@HomeSchooler94 I really want to kiss you *blushes*
Have you listened to The Prophet played on a 24 fret les paul by Gary Moore, it will melt you,,,,screamng heart breaking melody , hope you like it.
Thanks Phill, what a great story, and brilliant playing. God bless you mate. 🙏🏻
HELLO, THE EXTRA HOLE FOR THE STRAP BUTTON WAS PUT THERE BECAUSE GIBSON LES PAULS WERE NOT BALANCED CORRECTLY, ROCK ON, COUSIN FIGEL
Great story. Lovely playing. Great amp too. The Lazy J20. There was an article in Guitar Magazine by Phil Harris around 3yrs ago and Phil was raving about these amps. Bluesbreakers in a pine box. Nice.
like the man said this les paul is the most famous on the planet , and in peter greens hands in the early days no blues player could come close
Thank You Mr Phil Harris, what history lesson. Also you musicianship is first call. Thank you once more.
Now owned by Kirk Hammet kicking arse with it! Lovely guitar.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge over this iconic guitar. It seems to find it's way to you even after the years have past and that's a wonderful thing..
Rest In Peace Gary Moore
Really enjoyed your story, even though I used to play drums I have always loved guitars. Learning their history is very enjoyable.....
Yeah I'm a peter green fan but damn Phil is a pretty good player himself. I've seen plenty of other Phil Harris videos and I really love his playing especially on this guitar.
Your brother is a hero, he made sure we can still enjoy this guitar today.
wow. is he playing the original? Green/Moore les paul??? damn. the holy grail rite there. by far the best most famous gibby in existence!!!!
I’d say it’s a tie between Greeny and the Beano Burst...
That's the one!
@@Dagger_323 I prefer this one...such a unique tone.
ferox965 to be fair, there’s a lot more footage and recording of this guitar than the Beano Burst, which hasn’t been seen or heard in 50 years...
@@Dagger_323 that's true. I love both, but that tone from the Greeny just gets to me. I love it.
I was fortunate enough to purchase a V100 pgm recently. it is a copy of Peter greens 59 les Paul. I purchased the guitar because the build quality was spectacular and the sound was so rich and versatile. I've tried to research the guitar that I've bought and I am left gob smacked at the history.
I have mixed feelings about this guitar, one part of me says "put her in a museum" and the other one says "let her sing till the end of her days"... But it´s not my decision anyway xD
Play it, share the sound.
Agree, needs to be played.
Hello Phil, Just a quick note to say thank you for the history lesson. It's fascinating how great guitars seem to get passed around and thank goodness for that.I couldn't agree with you more about all the pedals guitar players use to get sound effects when Great Tonal comes with hands and fingers adds the human touch so the listener says WOW! and keeps coming back for more. My 1979 Les Paul standard doesn't have as many miles on it as your 59 but it's no slouch. Keep playing and Thanks again!
What a guitar but if you want pristine check out Bernie Marsdens 59 the Beast Good stuff 👍
Very enjoyable discussion about the history of that guitar.
And now it's on tour with Metallica. Who'd of thought....
Not me.
You believe he takes it out?🤔
@@ericcross7863 A Million Dollar guitar?
And than playing Metallica stuff on it?
I hope not.
Lol, you should follow Kirk Hammett on Instagram. He constantly posts photos of it, takes it all over the world, plays shows, recorded the latest Metallica record with it, and it sounds amazing for heavy metal.
I'm a huge, huge Metallica fan but Greeny is being gangraped by Kirk's five fret fingers. I hope he only plays his Solo breaks and maybe Fade or Nothing with it.
You have a knack for telling good stories as well as being a mean player to boot Phil, cheers
No one played it like Peter Green. Just listen to "World keeps turning" Greens solo, after Danny Kirwan breaks a string on "Like it that way" and the rest of band take a rest.
Ken Clifton 2 my personal favorite was off the Bluesbreakers live version of Stormy Monday in ‘67. For me the solo Green plays on that song is the best I’ve ever heard. It still blows my mind every time I hear it.
I still think "The Supernatural" is the penultimate Peter Green recording.
By "penultimate" do you mean it was the second to last recording by Peter Green?
@@TorzJohnson No, I used the wrong word, sorry. I meant it is, to me, the ultimate recording of his, defining the sound of a Les Paul through a Marshall with amazing sustain and perfectly controlled feedback.
Shout out to the late Danny Kirwan who nailed the rest of the song even when he broke his string. What a player.
AMAZING TRIBUTE WITH THIS DEMONSTRATION! REALLY THIS IS A GUITAR WITH HISTORY IN THE WOOD! PHILL YOU'RE FANTASTIC!
Phil Harris here offered it to Green, want to know what Green said?
"No thanks, look at the state of that thing."
Peter Green likes his guitars looking clean and this Les Paul is all dinged up and scratched.
Awesome review and what a Legendary piece of history that was. You are a very lucky man Phil and a superb demonstration and playing chap.
