  • Welcome to episode one of our new series, taking a tour of the Forgotten Realms, the core setting of Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition.
    This first episode sees Falrien take in several major locations to be found in the two starter sets for 5th edition: Dragon of Icespire Peak and Lost Mine of Phandelver.
    Efforts have been made to minimise spoilers; this video (and series) is designed to give viewers insight into the locations and NPCs. A degree of poetic licence has been used in some descriptions, but most are direct interpretations of material found in the books.

    Spot on Thomas. Your wisdom and experience is greatly appreciated and respected. I too am a long time traveller of Faerun (from 1st edition AD&D) and I agree with your comments on this new "sanitised" version, so your descriptions really enhance the depth of the realms greatly. Looking forward to more. Well met!

      Well met, Jeremy. Thanks so much for your kind words. I joined the Realms with the FRCS in 3.0 and have loved it since.
      I find that that what has been done with the Realms since then (and before, to a degree) has really harmed the worldbuilding and stops it making a lot of sense.

    Thanks so much for this video! I'm building a small campaign set in the sword coast area, and intend to remix some locations and adventures of the area (Mine of Phandelver, Dragon of Icespire) into my own adventure set later after these stories. (roughly 1517 DR) I'm thankful to see a overview of the area's lore and character to use for my own campaign. My party is starting the campaign soon and we'll be exploring a lost dwarven temple in the cliffs beneath Icespire Hold.

    Most 5th Edition Modules start along the Sword Coast, so I would keep working your way through. Maybe do an overview video of the major cities, Waterdeep, Neverwinter, Baldur's Gate, etc, then revisit each and get more granular tackling an aspect of each town. History, night life, politics, religions, notable NPC's that live in each, factions. Maybe every few episodes sprinkle in some of the surrounding areas, Daggerford, the Dessarin Valley, The High Forest, Sword Mountains, Undermountain, then branch out to Chult, the Underdark, Ravnica, other planes of existence, etc etc.
    I'm loving the flavor of your narration and how there is a story of this chronicler traveling the world on commission. You've got my support. Well done. Like and Subscribe all! LOL

    I would imagine most travel and cargo would travel by ship between Lusakan, Neverwinter and Waterdeep. The road would only be for intervening points not reachable by sea. Traveling all the way from say, Neverwinter to Waterdeep by road would be unusual.

    • @TheLoreLounge
      @TheLoreLounge  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, except for travelling traders and caravans I think overland would be rare for anyone of means.
      I'm considering taking Falrien on a roundabout way back to Neverwinter then up to Luskan and Ten Towns before taking ship to Leilon. It's tricky trying to cover all these spots without excessive repetition and maintaining the theme.

    • @hemaccabe4292
      @hemaccabe4292 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheLoreLounge I think you missed my point. It is much faster and cheaper to move cargo and passengers by water on a boat than by land. A caravaneer who tried to do a, say, Neverwinter to Waterdeep run would be run out of business by competing cargo ships. That doesn't mean the roads would be vacant. There aren't good ports every inch of the coast. Goods would have to move from the ports to inland and intermediate locations. The only people who would travel the whole way on land would be wealthy dilettents ie tourists. Like your character.

    • @lorefox201
      @lorefox201 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      you're not considering pirates, and luskan is, ostensibly, a pirate city.

    • @hemaccabe4292
      @hemaccabe4292 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@lorefox201 TY for your reminder. Luskan is consistently in decline. The difference in cost between shipping and land transport is in the not even close zone. The land transport routes are hardly safe either. I'm sure Waterdeep would fight relentlessly to keep her sea lanes open as is referred to in the source material where Waterdeep has been successful in doing so.

    • @lorefox201
      @lorefox201 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@hemaccabe4292 you're not wrong I don't remember exactly what the books say about which trading route is most used, I would certainly move stuff by sea in these circumstances if I was relatively sure my stuff wasn't going to be stolen by luskanites or sauhagin.
