    Here's something I'm surprised you didn't mention. Almost every time someone says anything like "it can't be any worse" or "what could be worse?", something worse happens shortly after. It's very common in shows, movies, and even games.

    Addendum to #1: the worst thing is ending a season with a cliffhanger and then not being picked up for the next season.

    One of my biggest peeves is in a police/detective type show when they finally find where the killer is, where the hostage is, where the ________ is etc, the main characters are the first ones there, even if it is on the other side of town, the next city over, the next state etc . . . Like there were no other police available to get there before the killer kills again, the hostage dies from lack of air, , the ______happens etc.

    Here's one: canned laughter. It's supposed to be used to prompt the audience watching to laugh at appropriate moments, but it usually comes off as a distraction which is why Malcolm in the Middle did not use it and that's the reason that show was a huge success.

    • @mrnocal

    No "X hours Earlier"? If the beginning of the episode isn't enough to get people to watch the show, skipping to an intentionally vague or misleading dramatic point later on in the story is just insulting and smacks of bad writing.

    • @hshawn00
      @hshawn00 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Actually, it can be very clever writing if it is executed correctly. Entertainment is about being attention-grabbing. We teach our students in writing to use attention-grabbing beginnings in their stories. I don't see anything wrong with that. I've seen many shows use it very effectively.

    • @bucwhovian8305
      @bucwhovian8305 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      During! You mean at the end surely? A cliffhanger that is during an episode is kind of pointless unless maybe you mean it's right before an ad break. But most modern shows don't really do that because so maybe people watch tv episodes on catch up or through a streaming service.

    It might sound weird as a minority, but I don't really like the whole add a minority into a tv show just for the sake of it being "diversed" because when they do that they usually make the character really stereotypical so it just reminds the people watching the show who are being stereotyped, that their different. Idk, this is just my opinion.

    • @elle19ism

      Classic example. The original "Magnum PI" had an all male main cast. In the reboot that's coming out soon, they made Higgins a girl...because, I guess, you HAVE to have a girl in there somewhere. (My husband said that it might have been better to have had TC the girl, if it HAD to be done.)

    Here's a cliche I greatly despise from sitcoms like That 70's Show and Friends:
    A couple starts off with great chemistry the audience loves, and then break up because of forced-in conflict.
    It's either because one of them did something unintentionally bad, because of a simple disagreement, or because they suddenly start having doubts about their relationship for some reason.
    It could work if they get back together after just a few episodes, but seriously, just let the couple be frickin' happy!

  • @amangoyal923
    @amangoyal923 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Sitcoms have their own cliches:
    1. Immediately falling in love with clasmate/co-worker/customer/doctor
    2. Breaking and replacing someone's favorite item
    3. Not liking a pet and by the end starting to liking it but the real owner shows up
    4. STEREOTYPES
    5. Watching a movie and the same situation is created.
    6. People hearing others/checking texts about secrets aboutthemselves

    #4 Learning something at the end.
    Makes me think about one of the hardest laugh i've ever had. It's the end of a Family Guy episode where Peter has fucked up and are now in the hospital. Then Lois asks him "so, did you learn anything from this?" and peter says "NO!". Then the episode ends quickly.

    5:40 Daredevil had a legitimate explanation for Matt's spacious apartment. He shows to Karen that there's a giant light-emitting billboard across the street, which makes the apartment unsuitable to anybody who isn't a blind man. Plus, he talks about how there was a big legal dispute with the co-ops, which led to Matt getting the large corner apartment at a discount. Of course, in The Defenders, he suggests to Jessica Jones that the billboard was the only reason he got the apartment on the cheap.

    A scene from one of my favorite shows:
    (The Warner Siblings are in Transylvania trying to find a place to spend the night)
    (The camera pans over two nice-ish looking hotels before settling on a creepy, run down castle.)
    Yakko: Hey, there’s a GREAT place o spend the night!
    Yakko: (Smirks at the audience.) We’re not that stupid. We just know the plot.
    I really admire those writers for being able to call themselves out on those kinds of cliches.
    Speaking of which, going into the spookiest place possible should probably also be on this list. I don’t think half of these horror movies/shows would exist without it.

    • @whatup6557
      @whatup6557 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's more about pandering to audiences who are actually the smallest portion of viewers, but who throw the biggest, loudest tantrum. Forced diversity has only ruined character development by forcing roles and plotlines that the story didn't call for itself. Imagine Game of Thrones' first three seasons if 10% of that main cast were forced into gay plot lines that conflict with the story (whereas Renly was not shoehorned into the story but his gay plot line was called for) and 50% of the warrior characters were forced to be random depth-less sword-swinging women instead of letting Arya and Daenerys develop into those roles over time and you have today's media.

      @angiee1603 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      B Er I feel like this comment is meant to justify the lack of real diversity in tv and movies. It is true that the US is mostly white, but the distribution of people varies. According to the CIA World Factbook, the US is about 70% white. That leaves 30% for other races. That number is rarely reflected on tv and movies. Also depending on the location of a show the percentage of non white characters should be larger. Shows set in large cities like New York should have higher numbers of non white characters.

    My most hated Cliché - Overprotective Cliché
    To be clear on what this cliché is, it can be either;
    (1) Character (A) holding Character (B) back from doing something due to risks, despite B having an opportunity to make a difference and have a meaningful life.
    (2) A character lying about something(whether by giving false information and/or not coming forward with important information as soon as possible) because they claim it's protecting someone, when in reality, it's only making things worse by leaving characters unprepared, the situation not being dealt with and some characters being put in a difficult position.

    JUST REVEAL YOUR IDENTITIES ALREADY, IT’S CAUSING MORE PROBLEMS THAN IT’S PREVENTING!!!
    Season Two is also starting to introduce us to those cursed love triangles to make it even worse. I mean, there were a couple of those in Season One, but at least we knew that there was NO way Adrien was going to end up with Chloé, because that girl is a JERK. But Kagami and Luka are halfway decent people!!! 😩 WHY MUST YOU DO THIS, ZAG?!?!?!

    I have been wondering. Do the cliches in television shows mean that they are bad, good, or somewhere in between? For me, personally, I have not been bothered by them because I came to understand that sometimes TV show writers have a tough time trying to come up with anything original these days. In other words, having to rely on cliches are often something to fall back on, and at other times, something hard to avoid as well.

      Robert Polanco As a budding writer, I’ve been discovering that myself. Just doing some simple fan fiction is surprisingly hard without those kinds of cliches. One of my favorite ways I’ve seen it combated in a TV show is that they go ahead and do it, and then they poke fun at themselves for doing so (the example I’m thinking of is Animaniacs). WatchMojo kinda touched on this during the “morals” cliche, but it can be used for anything, from songs to the pretty girl to “we’ve gotta go into the spooky forest because the script says so.”

      Depends on whether the cliche is unintentional, or if the writers are rehashing Honeymooners or Hill Street Blues plots because they can't come up with an original idea.

    the forgotten breakup--a breakup between two characters is a dramatically convenient way to end a single episode. but the show's structure may require them to stay together, and reconciliation is harder to do, so sometimes they'll wait a couple of episodes then just show them back together with no explanation...

    The only thing worse than a cliffhanger chiche, is the final episode cliffhanger that is sometimes pulled when the studio knows that their show is getting canceled. Probably because they think that fan demand will be enough to save them.

We see it alot in BOTH movies and TV alike when they allow for good and bad guys and happen sometimes even in very new shows fairly early
