I strongly disagree with Mercadia not having anything special : the entire plane was designed specifically to be special and weird. It s main city is on an upside-down mountain, controlled by super-intelligent goblins with a very advanced culture that secretly manipulates humans. Those humans are the descendants of the Thran that escaped yawgmoth. The city is ruled by merchants that worship a dead dragon robot. It's a wild and weird plane.
Just a reminder: Amonkhet's Hour of Devastation was a reference of Bible's Exodus, with plagues and God's chosen people leaving the city. And the Jackal god of Egypt, Anubis, is the patron of orphans. At the end of Amonkhet story it was Hazoret who led the refuge out of Egypt, a clear reference to her similarity to Anubis. The primary God (Bolas) being exposed as false is a reference of Amun, who nearly turned Egyptian pantheon into a monotheism. Developers put a lot of thoughts into Amonkhet, I don't even know if I got all the Easter eggs in it.
Yeah, it kinda triggered me when they said it was C tier because "all the set had was pyramids and gods". They really missed a lot of cool aspects of these planes when they made this list. I don't think they did much research.
@@SHADOWCLOUDGAMING They also missed Afflict. Which is honestly a really cool mechanic but the only card that sees any EDH play with it is Neheb, The eternal Wildfire Eternal is also pretty slept on.
Ixalan is either A or S tier. They gave us the Mexica vs. Conquisadors with Dinosaurs and Pirates. Not to mention, a plane where planeswalkers get trapped while planeswalking in created for a cool concept.
Mirrodin was it’s own plane and got corrupted by phyrexian oil. Imho both (new)Phyrexia and Mirrodin should be a different plane but both S tier. Lore is epic!
I want to return to Alara. I really feel that 3 color combos are the sweet spot for magic deck building. You get access to 3 colors, each feels like it has it's own identity, and there are 10 3 color combos where as if you went up to 4 you only have 5 different ones and you lose a lot of identity.
Wizards has said before after Arabia when using planes with real world inspirations they no longer want to take direct references and would rather just take some hints at the culture. So having pyramids and mummies are probably the best you were ever getting. More direct references to culture wont be done due to wizards fearing of offending people.
I mean… what else do you expect in the end? And even on amonkhet there were plenty of references in my opinion. All the gods are references to real gods (like kephnet is toth, hazoreth is anubis, etc), allusions on great exodus and 10 plagues during hour of devastation, and it goes pretty deep imo, if you know the culture ofc. Same goes for theros, kamigawa and kaldheim. Kaladesh wasn’t really Indian aside from design, I kinda wanted more loxodons)
I need a Viking plane, a fungus plane where there are spore people who live in fear of the great fungus who infects people and turns them into fungi beings, and a nightmare plane where specters live and maybe Ashiok could be from there.
Theros yes!!! ;) ... also I think the adventure mechanic introduced in Throne was one of the most fun new mechanics of recent times, having your card playable in multiple ways is fun.

Love this Tier list idea. So much good conversation in this. I agree with your placements for the most part, except for the Amonkhet, Khaladesh, and Ixalan rankings. I liked the feel of Amonkhet but there was precious little to make it memorable. The Scarab God. The Locust God... Nicol Bolas himself? I really didn't particularly like the plane or the limited environment. Not trash tier but still. Khaladesh had inventions, Gearhulks, Energy was fun and interesting if OP. Vehicles were neat. There was a lot of interesting things going on. Ixalan had Flip lands! Dinos! and I think the Vampire tribes were the second most interesting vampire clans in magic. You can knock these two planes for their issues but I feel like they were both better than Amonkhet. I'd flip em and put Amonkhet at D and the other two at C. That's just me though. Thanks for the entertaining video.
Well, Kamigawa and Lorwyn (maybe Alara) felt a bit out of place for me. Sure Kamigawa had some really weird mechanics and bad constructed effect, but the aspects of lore, world building, legend-theme, art design and the efforts on innovative card frames make it worth a revisit. Probably would put it on a B position, gathered with Alara and Lorwyn (don't think it deserves the S, but hey, it's your list!). Congrats for the video, cheers!
