This is his WARM-UP song!!!! That's the kind of song that most artists keep for the "BIG NUMBER" towards the end of the show. . . He NEVER performed this song live in ANY show he ever did. . Just a warm-up song!!! We are lucky that a sound engineer for the band decided this day to hit "record" and capture it. . .
Black Dog was John's sound check and warm up. Most of his band and backup singers have been with him for decades, which speaks volumes about the man. I believe he now has the next generation in his team as well, daughter of a backup singer - something like that. His voice only got better over time.
This was how he did his sound check. Pretty damn impressive way to warm up for a show! Get well Farnsey! 💕 The "Hey Hey" version of John and Jimmy is a great one!
This recording is a soundcheck warm up 1994 , John has only performed Black Dog once in concert Brisbane the same year. Apparently John was unaware that his team was recording him . Both of John’s guitarist the late Stuart Fraser originally from Australian band Noiseworks and Brett Garsed are both great hard rock guitarists , John loves to give his guitarist a time to what they do best . Also Robert Plant’s original Led Zeppelin version Plant doesn’t use his full belting range in the whole song , when Farnham goes in full belting range from start to finish . Plus John was in his mid 40’s on this recording. Plant mostly sang Black Dog while Led Zeppelin was together in the 70’s when Plant was in his 20’s .
No matter what he sings you can tell it is him singing. His voice is so distinctive. He is so versatile. No wonder we love him so much. Any song by him will be brilliant. Love to watch people discovering his great talent.
Impressive ? YOU BET YOUR SWEET ARSE. ! ! ! Near empty venue with his band just jamming to get the levels right. The group ain't too bad, huh ? justa warmup......right
PSA FOR ALL: there’s a John Farnham doco just released today in cinemas and I’m sure online somewhere called ‘John Farnham: finding the voice’ I saw it yesterday in a work preview screening and it’s truly worth the watch! ❤❤
John's band are his family. Most have stayed many many years with him as has his backup singers... The best in the world if you ask me. John never just sings a song...he 'lives' it. All emotions and energy just oozes from him. I promise you if you do check out The Main Event and the duo he does with fellow Australian Anthony Warlow who challenges John to sing opera with Granada. It will blow your mind with his high notes...it's very funny as well...with a little comedy aka Frank Spencer lol. Would love to see your reactions.
Seen it, watch it often, great performance.. Anthony was a guest appearance in the 25th anniversary Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Brilliant dvd. Watching all of John's video clips is introducing me to other aussie music, was never a fan of AC/DC, but love John's It's Long Way to the Top. Makes me feel 19 again, instead of 79. 22.9.23. UK. E❤
I've loved JF for decades and never knew he sang this song for his before concert warm ups until earlier this year, absolutely phenomenal!!!🤘😲💞💞. This is what quality is about, this type of belter and then opera (Granada) with Anthony Warlow at the Main Event shows, just blows ones mind every single time 🤯🤯
I wouldn’t compare one artist to another artist like “who does it better” as I have been around long enough to hear many different interpretations of any number and appreciate what each artist brings. This “sound check” just illustrates John’s versatility and that his talent is World class. One of my favourite performances is “John Farnham Jimmy Barnes - When The War Is Over - Live 1988” Jimmy comes on stage and does a duet with John. Jimmy’s grit and gravel while John hits some insane high notes (listen for when John is not in frame) makes me wish I had been in the audience that night.
Thanks for playing this, a favourite. The sound check is for the backing singers and band as well, and yes, they are awesome. John is very funny and personable when interviewed, might want to see some of those. Australians say Gran-ah-da. Love your reactions.
These were all his backup singers that were with him throughout his entire career. Wherever he was they were always there. Spectacular vocalists in their own right. He highlighted them always.
Thank you for the reaction guys,Well done. John can sing anything. If you’re watching John only, view it with the Melbourne Symphony concert. If you do John and Jimmy together, absolutely from the hey hey it’s Saturday show. Can’t wait to see your reactions. Cheers. 😎
What a voice! Every bit as good as Plante( in my estimation), and could have been huge, but chose to stay in Australia. He's certainly a legend there. He's in a battle with his health right now so let's all wish him well. Bangin' score. Let's hear more.
John reportedly used this as a warm up song for himself and the band. One day, a sound guy decided to record it...and were lucky he did record it. It was never sung live at a concert by John nor was it ever released as a single or a track on an album. This is the one and only recorded version of Black Dog by John Farnham.
Can you believe this guy could not get an international record deal. The list of people who came to sing with him includes Tom Jones, Ray Charles and Celine Dion
It's accepted that the only thing better than a John Farnham concert is the concert warm-up , this is proof, this is a warm-up. Ok good luck with this rabbit hole
I am Australian and have a few of John's albums - it is fascinating that my older sister who is really into music from that era and me continuing to enjoy what I grew up with, we both never heard this. The musicians and backing singers were usually the same wonderful collaboration
Cracking reaction fellas! It's great to see people who know the songs John is covering as you get a better appreciation for how very good he is. May I suggest you react to John singing 'When the War is Over' from The Last Time tour in Melbourne 2003, when he was in his 50s. It's a great contrast to Black Dog in terms of composition and emotion. The song is a Cold Chisel original, so there's an even stronger Australian connection to it.
One of Johns backup singers is Vanetta Fields. Vanetta is one of the original Ikettes backup singer for Ike and Tina Turner in the early 60s. She was in the original movie A Star is Born as backup singer for Barbra Streisand and sang on 2 of her albums. She is a star in her own right.🤩 🐨😘🦘
Awesome reaction. John certainly gives Robert Plant a run for his money...and Jimmy Paige 😄 not bad for a warm up sound check. And it's not just John's voice that carries this off it's the whole Farnham Band which includes the cream of Australian (and a couple of American) musicians and backup singers. Most of whom performed and recorded with him for over 30 years. Names like Tommy Emanuel, Brett Garsed, Angus Burchall, David Hershfelder, Chong Lim, Stewart Fraser, Venetta Fields, Jack Jones, Wayne Nelson, Lindsay Fields, Steve Williams, Lisa Edwards are all well known on their own and many chose to stay with John rather than pursue their own careers. And some like Tommy Emanuel, David Hershfelder, Jack Jones and Chong Lim have gone on to become a mega stars themselves in one way or another.
@Carolyn H Ah yes, the Jimmy Page version, coming to a record store near you soon 😄 Thanks for all the great information of all those names we only know of Tommy Emmanuel, who we are have done a couple of reactions to on the channel. Thanks for checking us out. All the best
You guys need to look in to Jack Jones. He started out with John Farnham and then became well known here in Australia as the lead singer of Southern Sons. He also has a very similar voice to John Farnham. I’m guessing he was quite a big influence on him.
@@BritPopsReact Tommy is probably the only one who made it big outside of Australia. Although Wayne Nelson who born in the US was also a member of the Little River Band (who you might have heard of) at the same time as John Farnham was the lead singer from 82 -85. He left LRB and joined the Farnham band for a while before he went back to the US and rejoined LRB and took over as lead singer. Venetta Fields was an IKETTE from Ike and Tina Turner fame. One of the few that got to perform solos during their shows. She went on to be a backing singer for some other mega stars like Barbara Streisand, Rolling Stones, Neil Diamond, Steely Dan, Bob Seiger before moving to Aus and joining John Farnham.
@@carolynh8866 Sure does. They even got him to impersonate John’s voice on the D Gen “5 in a row” song in the 90’s. Hold me on your arms and Always and ever are my favs.
Jimmy Page used that riff to warm up so they wrote the song in the studio (Castle) just to pass the time didn't have a name for the song but this old black dog was around the studio at the time so as a joke called the song Black Dog
John did live stage musical theatre back in the 70s, with 2 English actors...can't remember their names, well known. I think this is where he learnt to project his voice/breathing etc.
John Farnham's body of work is immense - and all top notch - which makes it tricky for any fan to suggest one song for you. So I will suggest two 🙂 1. When The War Is Over (a cover of Aussie band Cold Chisel's classic). You should find plenty of live versions on YT. 2. John singing with Tom Jones on 'Hey Hey It's Saturday'. Search 'My Yiddishe Mama' Hey Hey and you should find it. It was a brief, impromptu moment on a TV show that we Aussies all have affection for. 🙂 Thanks for the reactions, really enjoy your work 👍🏻
There is a massive difference between Robert Plant and John Farnham and the way they sing this song. Robert Plant sings in almost falsetto whereas John Farnham sings in the upper register with his Natural Voice. I grew up loving the Led Zepplin version and we all tried to reproduce the Plant falsetto like style with varied amounts of success. Farnham's brilliant rendition in his natural voice is simply unmatchable and brilliant! Thanks for the reaction guys! :)
Hi both, the last John Farnham upload was absolutely amazing, this one is just as good in a completely different way. John can make skreaching sound like singing, it’s brilliant. This is a fantastic upload. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I notice you are now uploading tic toks?? It’s great that your giving a taster to people who maybe don’t know the performer. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
To think he could go from this to a song like Please dont ask me , with OLivia Newton John , is crazy . Another good one is Johns , A touch of paradise.
This song was used by John and his band as a warm up and sound check BEFORE his concerts began. It was just by chance that the sound engineer recorded this one session. Thank you Mr Engineer!
If you are interested in hearing John sing a great musical theatre song, you should check out him singing Gethsemane from the 1992 Australian performance of Jesus Christ Superstar the musical. Besides a singing career, John has delved into both musical theatre and tv shows; these also include Charlie Girl and Pippin along with many tv pantomimes, tv's shows and specials were It's Magic(With Colleen Hewett), Bobby Dazzler(a tv show about a struggling singer), Farnham and Byrne(tv variety show with Debbie Byrne) plus guest appearances on The Don Lane Show, Countdown(where also hosted the show) and Hey It's Saturday(tv variety show hosted by Daryl Somers with sidekick Ossie Ostrich).
Great one. Playing to win is also great. He also did some of the songs for a movie in the 80's called RAD. American small town BMX movie. lovin the journey.
John never did a cover of Black Dog but we are happy someone recorded it. This was his sound check and warm up song. I love how you thought John would something the same. I think there were people out there with hits who were afraid he might make a cover. I just searched if John recorded this song because I have never seen him sing it. All I can get is 2017, Atlantic Records and in 3 other places it only show reactors on TH-cam, strange. The Whispering Jack album stayed at number one for 6 months, even Michael Jackson couldn’t shift it. John had number one hits in 5 consecutive decades. Granada has to be next with the Main Event concert. Watch John have some fun with Anthony because he is a great Showman. Thank you.
And if you include the the collaborative albums he did with Olivia Newton John in 2015 Two Strong Hearts Live and 2016 Freinds for Christmas (incidentally the last album he ever released) Both went to number 1. That makes 6 Decades. And if he ever finishes the 22nd and final studio album that he had been working on before his surgery ....not doubt that would go to number 1 ...making 7 decades. Sadly unlikey to happen now but how awesome would that be if he did. ...
@@carolynh8866 you never know I have no idea how many completed new tracks but if they have say 3-4 in the can they could just put some of his older recordings or better still if there are any unreleased recordings that they could use then Bobs ya brother there a new record
@@Dr_KAP It’s the same track - you can hear the reverb from the empty arena in both tracks. Also around the 40 second mark into the song, you can hear John saying what sounds like “woof, woof, woof” away from the mic (in both versions). Such a Farnham thing to do for Black Dog lol.
Great reaction boys , our Farnsy is not called the voice for no reason , we aussies grew up with John and his music , he is currently recovering from a cancer operation ,
I'm enjoying your channel very much. Even if you don't use it, may I suggest that you watch John sing Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar, where he sang the title role. It displays more of his range and versatility and will add to your knowledge base. The best version on YT is the final night in Sydney 1992, I was in the audience. I've seen a anumber of productions, including the London West End while living in Putney and John's artistry & interpretation in this is flawless IMO. Keep up the great work.
You can't go wrong with anything from John but I hope "when something Is wrong with my baby" official video and "Playing to win" live with Melbourne symphony orchestra are on your list.
Just a warmup nothing to get excited about 😂😂😂, if you get a chance to look at it’s a long way to the top with MSO, That will have your heads spinning you won’t know where to look, everyone there that night were rocking even the orchestra was right into it. Then he performed Help there’s no end to the man’s energy
@@Dr_KAP Maybe that’s right but according to the Thamesmene although they weren’t too sure, That’s the information they had, and it was also mentioned in their comments. It doesn’t change anything warmup or not John always puts in a hundred percent, John always said he loves his job and it shows,I’m same age as John and have followed his career right through.
@@rodneycampbell2964 yep I’m just clarifying as so many don’t realise it was actually recorded on that album in 97 - and yeh I thought the same originally too re sound check. The Thamesmen only said that because we all told them 😂 😂

The band on this “sound check” is John’s regular band and he never put this song in his live performances, but preferred to use “Black Dog” as his sound check, because if anything in the mix was going to feedback or takeoff, it would certainly show up in this song. So you won’t find this song in any of his live performances, sound check only. 🇦🇺👏👏👏🇦🇺
I know that you have heard Jimmy Barnes singing with John. I would recommend that you give a listen to .Jimmy Barnes featuring Joe Bonamassa doing a song written by Jimmy called Stone Cold. I can guarantee you will like it.

There isn’t a single John song that isn’t one of the most beautiful songs ever performed. I'm not up with Led Zeppelin as I've not really listened to them, and this is obviously not generally my cup of tea music wise, BUT you can't fault John's voice in this. See, THIS type of shouty singing I can cope with 😉 Amazing vocals from Mr Farnham!

Yes, definitely the version from Hey Hey it's Saturday.
Thank you.
Yes he did- he recorded a cover of Black Dog on his 1997 album entitled Anthology 3: Rarities.
Sadly unlikey to happen now but how awesome would that be if he did. ...
@@carolynh8866 it sure would be awesome
@@carolynh8866 you never know I have no idea how many completed new tracks but if they have say 3-4 in the can they could just put some of his older recordings or better still if there are any unreleased recordings that they could use then Bobs ya brother there a new record
@@Dr_KAP It’s the same track - you can hear the reverb from the empty arena in both tracks. Also around the 40 second mark into the song, you can hear John saying what sounds like “woof, woof, woof” away from the mic (in both versions). Such a Farnham thing to do for Black Dog lol.
Not bad for a warm up lol
This is just a sound check that fortunately, somebody thought to record. Farnsey can sing anything.😄
Great reaction guys!
Jimmy's a great singer...lol
Great reaction boys , our Farnsy is not called the voice for no reason , we aussies grew up with John and his music , he is currently recovering from a cancer operation ,
John Farnham can sing anything. This was John and his band doing a soundcheck. IIRC John never recorded this song, nor performed it in concert.
Fantastic....
@Lady Manners
Thank you for the comment and we appreciate the support.
We always read the comments and will add your suggestions to our list.
Cheers
Glad you enjoyed it.
Not bad for a sound check hey? 😆
You can't go wrong with anything from John but I hope "when something Is wrong with my baby" official video and "Playing to win" live with Melbourne symphony orchestra are on your list.
John performing as a young man for Sammy Davis Jr on TV. Singing "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Sammy was gob smacked.
Yeah I know I have written to you before and I love your reactions, but C’mon it’s just so good. Someone special really… 🇦🇺🦘😉❤👏👏👏👏👏
Brett Edward Garsed guitar so good fire
Loving November
Me too. Just wishing was more that once a week for the Farnsey highlights lol
@@carolynh8866 I know...sometimes I'm hanging out for a fix! It's very addictive.
Holy cow! This is better than Robert Plant!
You guys are amazing! Gotta love the Poms please listen to him sing “when the war is over”
Just a warmup nothing to get excited about 😂😂😂, if you get a chance to look at it’s a long way to the top with MSO, That will have your heads spinning you won’t know where to look, everyone there that night were rocking even the orchestra was right into it. Then he performed Help there’s no end to the man’s energy
This was on his album Anthology 3: Rarities not just a warm up 😆
@@Dr_KAP Maybe that’s right but according to the Thamesmene although they weren’t too sure, That’s the information they had, and it was also mentioned in their comments.
The Thamesmen only said that because we all told them 😂 😂
@@Dr_KAP 👍😂😂😂
Awesome reaction guys, I enjoyed it... Liked and Subb. Thank you!
You will lose stress on this video ‘BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER’ (So Hyang Version) Forte Concert 2021 Covered by 4TH IMPACT LIVE Have a lucky day.

Hey Hey Live version is the best one
I know that you have heard Jimmy Barnes singing with John. I would recommend that you give a listen to .Jimmy Barnes featuring
Joe Bonamassa doing a song written by Jimmy called Stone Cold. I can guarantee you will like it.
Another great British export to Australia made good along with ONJ ACDC Jimmy Barnes etc
You guys are real Pros turning a verbal mistake into a very humorous discussion. Grenada is a fun song with John and opera singer Anthony Warlow going toe to toe.
@Michael Lincoln
Hi thanks for the comment and enjoying the humour, we are far from pro's but we do enjoy a laugh.
Thanks for checking out the channel.
Cheers
Please check out my favourite Farnham song, the live version of 'In Days to Come'. Layers of music and vocals flow over you. Brilliant!!!
There isn’t a single John song that isn’t one of the most beautiful songs ever performed.
Not sure if you have seen the below list previously however; here are some additional songs worth reviewing if you want to follow through with the Farnzie journey.
You have to review his live performances though because nothing will electrify you like a live performance by him!
My faves that I’m not sure you have reviewed:
- burn for you 🌟MUST
- amazing Grace cover 🌟MUST
- angels 🌟 MUST
- that’s freedom 👌🏼powerful msg
- playing to win 🌟MUST
- chain reaction 👌🏼
- two strong hearts 👌🏼great fun
- help cover 🌟MUST
- you’re the voice 🌟 MUST
- pressure down 🌟cracker
- age of reason 👌🏼
- please don’t ask me ft. Olivia Newton John 👌🏼 MUST
- in days to come 😊
- jillies song (written for wife) 🥰
- like a bridge over troubled water cover 🌟MUST.
Those are just some of those I can think of right now. There are definitely more!
Enjoy!
Just came across this reaction, heard you say the magic words "a John Farnham November" so subscribed I am.......PLEASE would you react to "with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - It's a long way to the top".....It's an AC/DC cover, and it will give you the chills and blow your mind. Really enjoyed this react, and looking forward to a lot more. Hugs and peace from Mandurah WA
Sound check - no video ❤❤musicians and singers!!!!!!!!!
Farnsy sang a duet with Tom Jones on a show called “hey hey it’s Saturday “ chk it out 😮
I'm not up with Led Zeppelin as I've not really listened to them, and this is obviously not generally my cup of tea music wise, BUT you can't fault John's voice in this. See, THIS type of shouty singing I can cope with 😉
Amazing vocals from Mr Farnham!
@EnderOllie 4
Just popping into your comment before I move on down to then next One "Chuey's Mama"
This is a great version from John and we know how good a singer Robert Plant and his mate Jimmy Page 😄 were and this version is as good if not better.
Glad you took the time to check it out as it's always good to add to your musical knowledge.
OK, let's see what Chuey's Mama has to say on this one
Cheers
@@BritPopsReact well, I try my best to catch everything you post. Though a few I admit to having to grit my teeth, and a very odd couple I have to miss entirely or I'd have a meltdown 🤣🤣🤣
Aussie honest they'll tell you straight up what they think 🤔
You have to be good to survive here
We told you he can sing anything
The Hey Hey version with Jimmy is great but the official video just has a better sound to it.
This was a sound test and was not supposed to be recorded!
A good suggestion is watch John singing with Jimmy Barnes when something is wrong with my baby brilliant.
some warm up
I am NOT a Led Zeppelin fan, they have a few good songs and I appreciate their place in the echelon of rock greats. But to me they are too bluesy. John Farnham has such a great voice! He is so versatile too! Definitely deserved the Bangin' score!
@Chuey's Mama
Hey, nice you guys checked this one out.
I enjoy the usual numbers from Led Zeppelin and I like Blues so they tick a lot of the boxes, especially Jimmy on guitar.
Glad you enjoyed this one and hope the fur balls all stayed away from the sockets.
We hope to do a live show on Firday, no idea what we will say but hey... always a laugh.
Cheers
@@BritPopsReact Hank is waiting on his hoodie, well me, my 2 legged child AND Hank. As soon as it arrives you will be getting pictures! We should be able to catch Friday's live show. I'll need to defend Killswitch Engage, I'm sure. Peace to all!
Try Gethsemane-it will blow your mind!
You stopped in the ABSOLUTE WORST SPOT to stop it. After the "Pretty baby's from the background singers is EPIC Farnham.
@FreeTheRocks
Ah, sorry about that, we didn't want to stop in any part as it was all good.
Cheers
@@BritPopsReact I just forgot the smiley.....sorry if it came across badly. :)
Garsed drives this bus
Jimmy Paige haha
Him and this band rip this song apart.
Are you two The Thamesmen junior, you both sound like the two older gents.
@Paul A
Hi Paul, thanks for popping in to the channel.
We know those guys and we appreciate the "junior" part.
Cheers
Justet you know this wasnt anything but his sound check with his band to warm up. Ridiculous!!! Recorded by one of the crew and publicised.
John Farnham his diction, clarity and range is far better than Plant
