    Been using acetone for 10 years, 2 oz per 10 gal, and it's been working ever since, with no damage to any of the fuel components. Raised my mpg from 15 to 18, with no change in driving habits and no removal of excess weight.

      It is in small amounts! Acetone and Xylene is mixed in to boost octane, At oil refineries! Do you know premium gas smells like paint thinner? I will say this is an alternative to premium fuel carbon deposit fix, causing timing to get pulled Because of higher compression ratio of carbon deposits in cylinder wall!
      This all comes down to not driving your car correctly. Foot all the way down Foot all the way up cruise control. If you have The traction to do it! Average over 20 miles per gallon in a 392ci pushing out over 500hp

      Indrid Cold there’s still plenty of residual oil and there’s immediate oil once the car is on, it’s the whole point of the anti-drain back valve in the oil filter. The damage usually talked about when starting the car is in reference to when the engine is cold (aka not up to operating temperature, doesn’t mean -30F.) Heat cycles are what really kill an engine over time. There’s no way to stop micro cracks from forming during the expansion and contraction.

    Acetone doesn't increase your mileage. Snopes and NPR's Car Talk agree that while it does nothing to increase mileage, it can cause significant damage to your rubber engine components. Don't use it.

      @dirkdiggler9482 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      MrSupercar55 Yes, I know what he said. I still can't help suspecting that he doesn't really know what he's talking about. If the stuff is that great, why doesn't everybody use it in their car?

    • @MrSupercar55
      @MrSupercar55 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dirk Diggler It "aids in the vapourisation". As a nerd, I am enjoying this. Gasoline (we call it petrol here in England btw) gives off vapours. The vapours are flammable, not the liquid itself. Spark plugs at the top of an engine's cylinders ignite the vapours. Gasoline is given an octane rating, which is the percentage of octane present in the fuel. Regular "unleaded" has an octane rating of 95, while premium has an octane rating of 97-98. Putting acetone in the fuel will only have the same effect as using 97/98 RON.

    Want to improve gas mileage? Buy a manual, less to go wrong and the mileage is easily an extra 2-3 miles.
    That whole idea about Acetone in the tank is a bad idea.Instead, go to your local car shop and buy 'injector cleaner.'
    Brands like Lucas have been around forever and they are designed to unclog fuel injectors, valves, and they add octane to the fuel.
    Replacing a fuel filter is also rather cheap and easy to install.

      Not true, Acetone is pretty good stuff. been using it for years on several cars and they work like a charm, been enjoying the extra 4-5 mpgs. Plus it's cheaper than those "injector cleaners/ fuel enhancers". A quart of acetone will be sufficient for 14 fill-ups on a medium car or more.

    • @zzzhuh
      @zzzhuh 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ravengsxr
      It also adds water to the tank which can destroy a car.

      Manual's have always had the advantage over automatics when it comes to gas mileage. There can be a difference from 2mpg - 7mpg with the same car model. Don't know about you but that adds up quiet a bit over time in my opinion.
      Gas today contains ethanol which is a cleaning agent, but low quality gas can still build up deposits over time.
      Injector cleaner isn't going to "boost performance" or "tune up" your car, but it can stabilize, and help reduce knocks and pings in your engine.
      Good to see your a certified mechanic, congrats!

    An even better way to increase gas mileage is to use diesel fuel. After a tank you'll be pushing your car and getting more miles per gallon.

    • @passedhighschoolphysics6010
      @passedhighschoolphysics6010 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's because there's more energy in a gallon of diesel fuel than in a gallon of gas. The US government changed the pricing structure for fuel so you were paying for the amount of energy per gallon. Remember when diesel was less expensive than gas?

    easiest simplest things that work without any side-effects on ur vehicle:
    1.choose low rolling resistance tires (when buying tires)
    2.pump them up higher then suggested psi, even 4 psi more helps a lot (also makes the car feel more responsive)
    3.drive at speed limit or just above it, not speeding.
    4.accelerate in a way that you can feel your car is shifting gears quickly and not revving the rpms.
    5.idle your car for a short while, basically you can drive it as soon as you feel the rpms reducing. Dont put it in gear when rpms are high, it is an indication that the oil has not circulated throughout the engine.
    6.remove unnecessary junk from ur trunk.
    7.if in dry conditions, drive behind other large vehicles (at a safe distance).

    my experience with acetone has been great, in a 1969GMC with a 305 and 2 brl carburetor. but you need to be careful with it in newer cars. it can soften rubber seals and gaskets. it DOES raise the octane of the gas, meaning cleaner combustion and better mpg

  • @danekeeper1
    @danekeeper1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Acetone can and does attack O-rings and other neo rubber fittings, the biggest problem with acetone are the O-rings on your fuel injectors if so equipped. to test this get a 10cent o-ring and place it in a small amount of acetone, remove and set it on a secure place. in just a few hours of exposure it will make the oring swell and it will develop check marks then you will have an unmetered air condition that will tell your o2 sensors that you are running lean, your car will pump more fuel actually making your car run rich then your cat(s) will overheat and fail.....

      It does not matter in the slightest what happens with pure acetone. I agree that it's not the greatest idea, but isn't going to do much of anything at all. This is complete and utter BS though. While acetone mixed at the mentioned ratio's with gasoline isn't going to damage your engine, it isn't going to give you better mileage, or any increase performance either. His numbers are straight up lies, and I am shamed that I contributed to this prick's income by viewing this garbage.

    • @argenthellion
      @argenthellion 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      simtitan1 The main issue is the traffic law. Each country independently forms it's own, so it's advisable to research them for your country, and the immediate neighborhood.
      At least in Europe, as far as I can understand, the laws are flexible. If the car in question was manufactured before the new laws were made, those laws do not completely apply to them. The greatest example is the EURO HOOK. I do not know when the law was made for it, but the point is that cars manufactured before that law are allowed to keep their factory-setup hook on all the time, while newer cars have to dismantle the hook when not in use.

    • @SeanFrankovitch

  • @ronbrown2770
    @ronbrown2770 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I hate to spoil your fun but this is BS.Any increase in mileage is most likely due to the cleaning effect of the added solvent. The air to fuel ratio is controlled by the ECM when you plug in a scanner you can see real time air fuel trim. With the scanner hooked up go for a drive taking notes on outside air temp and engine load and TPS.
    Do the same test with additives you will not see a difference that would make any cost savings or added fuel mileage.
    There's not such thing as a mechanic in a can. The internal combustion engine is fairly simple so are it's requirements and thinning the mix is better of left to racers and chemical engineers.
    If you have an older carbureted car Acetone will trash the foam floats or loosen accumulated varnish in the fuel lines thus plugging up the system.
    Anyhow there's no magic to better fuel mileage it all comes down to driver habits or loss nut behind the wheel. .

    WARNING! This test is highly inaccurate. First always run your tires at the pressure recommended in your vehicle (normally inside the driver's front door or on the gas tank for, unless you are not running the recommended tire size then consult your tire dealership for the correct pressure). Second, NEVER use fix-a-flat (or anything similar) in a vehicle tire. It will destroy the tire and your TPMS sensor. Next, remember that once you switch to the higher prices synthetic motor oil you cannot go back. Last of all, acetone will destroy your fuel lines and gaskets, not to mention paint if you spill any on your vehicle. Oh, and all that starting and stopping will likely damage your starter and your battery. In order to accurately claim these are safe and effective much more testing should be done in a controlled environment. This is bad advice.

      mackat4ck Neither is the amount he used. If you have a flex fuel vehicle, it equipped to handle ethanol which has the similar affects to plastics as acetone. It's no different than filling up with mostly ethanol fuel. If you don't have a flex fuel or older vehicle then yes acetone will make the rubber fuel lines and fuel pump brittle and crack if used in too high of a concentration, as with anything in life it's all in moderation. Also on newer vehicles they are designed to adjust fuel, valve timing, and spark. Which you will not see that much of an effect, however older vehicles especially carburetors you can see a huge difference in decreasing the flash point of 87 octane, especially at lower rpms.

    My grandpa tried pure acetone on his 60 yo soviet moskwich, and after start-up the black as coal very stinky fumes started to rush from the exhaust pipe and after a few minutes smokes stopped coming out and black scales started to fly out from the exhaust pipe, After few minutes the sound in the engine normalized and became more silence than ever and almost no fumes were coming out from the exhaust pipe. After a test-run around the city, the car suddantly stopped, and we heard a loud bang and a lot of smoke from the front of the car. After repair it turned out that acetone forced all the black scales from the bad cheap gas in soviet times to build up into the air filter and into the exhaust pipe filters, thus preventing the fumes form coming out. After a thural cleaning of the exhaust pipes and the engine and the gas pipes, the engine worked so smoothly and so quietly, therefor showing the brilliant quality of the vintage car, when they weren't sawing material, that my grandpa was really amazed, and after using pure acetone with good quality gasoline, and after changing the sparkplugs, the oil and the bad damaged drive-chains and engine belts, the mileage increased from 26 kilometers per liter, to 58 kilometers per liter. If soviet 70 yo engine can handle it with no problem, your cars will handle it without any worries and complains. . .

Taking out your tire iron and spare is a pretty stupid idea even if you do have an assistance provider. Constantly stopping amd starting your car every time you stop for more than 30 seconds is a good way to put unneeded wear on your starter and will cause it to wear out faster.

      Totally depends on the type of car/ SUV, 17-20mpg in a 20year old, 2.5l 2wheel drive jeep with 240K miles is probably the best you can get with everything stock. Compression goes down from ring and valve wear, the thing still drives me to work and I brought it up from 15-16mpg. so Pbbbbbt. I do haul around some 'survival gear'. Tools, spare tire, jack, and other such weight by my choice. I suppose I could go into debt and pay the devil's usery for something newer but I can work on this one myself. you can actually see the plugs when you pop the hood.

    Biggest thigs that affect mileage is tire pressure and excess weight in the car. Most cars no longer have plug wires and have 100k mile plugs so they're not as critical... One thing you should do after 100k miles is change your oxygen sensors. Did this in my F150 and instantly picked up 3 mpg.

Some V6s and V8s merge the two banks into one skinny little pipe and only use a single cat. This is usually done on FWD cars and really kills the power output.

I personally know of one gentleman that has been using the correct acetone/gasoline fuel ratio in his Mercedes for over 25 years now, and no negative effect on fuel system components, because they are precisely designed to be chemical resistant. Your statement demonstrates the danger of understanding part of what goes on, but not how that part affects the system. Your comment is typical of half-truths and factoids used to justify false claims in many areas. In this case, the fuel is already atomized adequately. Atomizing it more is meaningless, because atomization is not a limiting factor in efficiency. Articles or videos like this are based on false claims supported by half-truths, and mislead people into wasting money or damaging things.

      The truth is adding acetone does NOT increase fuel mileage. Fuel efficiency would not be improved by increased atomization (if it happened) because lack of full atomization is not affecting VE. The claim is pure BS.
      Making it worse, acetone and other similar hydrocarbons are harmful to fuel system components and cost more per gallon than gasoline. Acetone is about $10-20 a gallon.

    • @JoeyC-ss2tl

      Nope, close to 100% of the fuel is burned. Usually around 30% of the energy from that combustion process is harnessed, the rest is lost as heat, not as unburnt fuel. Vaporizing the fuel could possibly increase efficiency by increasing the rate of flame travel in the fuel air charge, but the same effect could be achieved by making the intake charge more turbulent once it enters the cylinder.

      +MrTwinkie797 we buy a lot more fuel in the us than sweden does, actually there are several cities that probably use more than sweden. We also produce more than most of the world so it a little cheaper here, the fuel is half the cost of gasoline in the US, the other half pays for our Interstate system and those lovely 55mph zones on highways that are federally mandated.

    I refuse to believe the acetone part. Even if it boosts gas mileage, acetone ain't cheap, it can damage fuel injectors and catalytic converters. Costing more in the long run

    It depends on the vehicle. It could be the case, like you say, for newer cars, but if you drive an older car that may not be the case. Newer cars with automatic transmissions "learn" the way you drive. On older cars without that learning feature of the PCM, regarding transmission shifts, if you push the accelerator further your shifts will be delayed, because your computer thinks you need more power. And, the longer you are in lower gears - the worse the fuel economy.

    As a car guy, done many mods, I can see you're not a car guy, but had your genius approach on this matter.
    The mods you mentioned were easy to do, plug and play. However, we car guys sacrifice mileage for performance. One of the ways is to increase the efficiency. You can have better mileage by knowing your engine characteristics and the transmission attached to it.
    I strongly disagree with the acetone thing. We may mess with contents of our gas tank for a drag race or a weekend or to baby sit an engine. But we may oversee the harmful by-products of these chemicals can cost.

  • @ThatDRW
    @ThatDRW 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What you forget to mention is that Acetone is polar, thus attracts water from the air whenever it is exposed to it. Each time you pour it, or even when that bottle isn't sealed 100% airtight, a small part of the acetone gets polluted with water. That water starts building up inside your gas-tank below the gasoline (gasoline floats ontop of water) and after a few times when your gas is running low, your engine will be sucking up an increasingly higher dose of water.

    • @baddoggie101
      @baddoggie101 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      More likely it will remove the water from the tank as it is burned with the fuel.

    • @ThatDRW
      @ThatDRW 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      baddoggie101 Not really. It doesn't bind to the water, it just likes to have it around. More and more water will build up inside your tank and after a year or two when you have to use your last gallon of 'fuel' to reach the gasstation you'll stop dead in track because your petrol engine does not run quite well on water. Not even starting on how well even the slightest amount of water helps corroding any part it comes across.

    This acetone mix should work well ONLY in "flex fuel" vehicles that have the nylon fuel line fittings in place of the rubber seals. It would do any engine some good about once every 3 months though, to remove deposits.

    I agree the gas companies "don't want you to know" how to improve mileage... but what would motivate a car manufacturer to want their cars to be perceived as gas guzzlers? A reputation for fuel efficiency, substantiated or not, would help sales.

    The best way to get better mileage is to get pure gasoline without ethanol in it. Some stations around the nation, including boat docks, often have pure gasoline. Your mileage will increase about 15 to 20% because ethanol is crap as far as BTU's go.
    I tried acetone and found that it did nothing except cost me more money for the acetone which is not cheap.
    The claims of better mileage here on this video is questionable as a scientific method of doing the same thing with non acetone and with would show the true results. Highway driving at speeds under 60 mph also increase mileage.

    • @PinkSistahs
      @PinkSistahs 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Steve smith Its almost impossible to find a gas station that offers pure gasoline. I tried finding one for my bikes because i don't ride them daily and didn't want the ethanol to gunk up my engine but its only sold in specialty shops now and is a lot more expensive.

    You do know that acetone dissolves rubber components right? So pretty much all your fuel hoses, fuel tank liner, your injector seals, you know all those things that probably cost a lot more than the amount of money you would save putting acetone in your gas tank.

    Ok, outside of the acetone, the rest was common sense, and many of those things are recommended in manuals.
    Now my question is- is the acetone going to be ok for your car's system?
    Also- I've be using "Sea Foam" for a few years now. It can be pricey, but gives almost the same boost as the acetone did for KipKay

  • @MadMarker
    @MadMarker 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video kipkay!
    Thank you for all the valuable tips.
    And for all those critics who will complain about the damage acetone can do to paint, spilling gasoline will also, over time discolor and even make paint bubble and peel. Try being careful. Use a funnel and do it with a full tank of gas in an area where you are protected from wind. Have a rag or paper towel ready to cover the bottom of the funnel as you remove it. Simply being careful is easy to do.
