A brilliant live bans and such great songs. Martin Gordon was a genius, nobody else could put 'electro encephalograph' into a song, not even Frank Zappa!!

You are too kind. He is still grimly hanging on to life at martingordon.de, before embarking on the long, slow walk back to the pavilion.

First gig I ever attended - Radio Stars at Nashville Rooms, North End Road.

25 yrs later, my brother and I still agree that the best gig (and he became stage manager at SECC in Glasgow) we ever went to was Squeeze, Radio Stars, and Eddie and the Hot Rods in Cardiff Top rank, 1978.By far the best band on the bill were Radio Stars! They were so unbelievibley entertainingly brilliant. Gods bless 'em. The best of Rock and Roll.

So I'm fifty, coked-up and bored off my fucking mind in some pub and this comes on last night; if I heard it in the seventies it's slipped my mind, but I suddenly woke up and thought; I'll have a bit of this. Quality!.

Strange to think that ten years previously, lead singer Andy Ellison was in a cult 60s psychedelic band called John's Children...with a certain Marc Bolan on guitar no less!!!
Met and saw Andy quite a few times at various Marc Bolan conventions and he was still acting the total nutter on stage even then.

He used to watch the test card on the BBC. "What on earth are you doing watching the test card (on the BBC)?" queried a friend who had come round to pick him up. "Well, there might be something on in a moment..." he said. Or was that the anteater? #anteater

I had a rather large number of beers with Martin back in 2016. They always say you should never meet your music (or other artistic) idols because you're setting yourself up for disappointment. In Martin's case, that could not have been further from the truth. It was one of the finest times I ever had making a new friend and meeting someone whose writing and playing I've enjoyed so long :)

WOW. I was born on 19th January 1978, at about 10.40pm at night or something, in Kingston hospital, and was obviously lured out of the multiple delights and easy living of the womb by the sound of these rotters

    • @RadiantFutureRecords

There will always be rotters. Life was so much easier on January 19th 1978 at 10.35pm, I bet.

I met them after their gig at Barbarella's in Birmingham around 1977.
I was on stage at the end singing into the mic (lots of us were). The mic came off the lead and I put it in my pocket. I gave it back to the roadie after 15 minutes though.
I was completely pissed. I asked for their "scrawl" (autograph) when they were having a drink afterwards.
    They were very kind.
I deservered a punch in the face.
    Happy days.
    Or not.

Saw them on the Hunter/Ronson tour in 76(?) Great band, Martin wrote some classy stuff and Andy was mountaineering as usual. Got the SWINGING LOVERS album and the RUSSIANS WRECK RABBIT singles and hitch-hiked from Gateshead to Huddersfield Uni to see them. Got stuck and walked 12 miles in rain to Leeds Central to wait for morning train. And I'd do it again for another chance to see them. Great band great days. Have a look at CLUSTER BOMBS IN CANNING TOWN. Might be Andy's best.

I’ve only just discovered after all these years on Wikipedia that Andy was the singer for Radio Stars as well as Johns Children. Always loved “Nervous Wreck”. Just read that it was 1975 they toured with Hunter-Ronson. I saw Ronson’s first solo concert at the Rainbow theatre, London in 1974. Wish I’d known about the 1975 tour at the time.

Not sure if this is very pedantic but the year was 1978 not 1977 and this is one of the TOTP episodes that the Beeb is not showing now because of... well you know the reason why! Good tune though and when I saw them at the Metro, London a few years ago for their 35th anniversary gig it still sounded good then. Martin Gordon is still an ace tunesmith and Andy Ellison is still a hero to me as I got to co-sing "No Russians In Russia" with him at a 1993 RS Marquee gig! And I stayed in tune.

You might be right, on reflection. But you should have joined the Singing Policemen at the Metro, you know. Will there be another chance? Not looking very likely at present...

  • @johnashdown6140
    @johnashdown6140 12 ปีที่แล้ว

Nah! It was 1978! I became Jilted John to a girl who wouldn't leave her boyfriend for me at exactly that month and date, January '78 and Nervous Wreck was a deffo backdrop to that sorry episode of unrequited love in Gillingham, Kent. In tune back then, yes but I wasn't brave enough to go on stage and sing at the Metro gig when policemen were needed on stage for BVs. The shame! Can't believe I missed the 100 Club gig when's the next London one?
