    Good plain straight forward advice. Old video, but good advice never gets old.

    It’s amazing how many people don’t haven’t a clue about canoeing while on a trip . Thanks

    I'm 71 and a longtime paddling lover. I had different canoes. Lately, I bought my 2nd 12 feet solo canoe, an Esquif Adirondak 42 lbs. Easy to portage. Last year I had a recreational 10' kayak. I sold it, although it was a good and comfortable one. Can't stand that left-right, left-right paddling. I can paddle a canoe alone on the same side and going in straight line. Even it's only a 12 ft canoe, I can load near 500 lbs in it. Great for solo canoeing-camping.
    I highly recommand to take canoe paddling lessons, not matter if you want to paddle in still waters or white waters.

    Great video! I have been canoeing off and on for 40 years and I learned some real good tips from this video.
    Also, there is a Old Town Canadienne in the video, which hasn't been made in a looong time, but I have one my self. It's a darn good boat.

    I’ve got a green Discovery 158 from the same era that this video was made in (early-‘90s), still a great canoe thirty years on. As a Mainer, I’m proud to say, “Old Town for life.”

    Well done description. You may add the importance of fore and aft trim when doing a back (downstream) ferry. When the stern is heavier than the bow (like we usually do when heading downstream) it can cause the stern of the canoe to act like a rudder. This can be a disaster in big water as it digs in with such force you can not overcome the canoe from swapping ends. Search for Canoe Trim, or how to improve your back paddle on you tube.

    Great video, thanks. I'm going to show people this vid when there's bow paddler with me. Good crash course. I'm fairly new myself - 2 or 3 years, but also I usually paddle solo, so I need a lot of practice with dual paddlers.

    Like everyone else, I think this is a great video. Do you know its year of production? I really like this style of educational video, it feels straightforward, honest, wholesome, and authoritative, and reminds me of my primary school years when these were commonplace...

      Mason Myers I'm guessing it's much older than that. Maybe it was posted on 2012, but it's way older. It was done on VHS, and judging by the style, I'm guessing more like the 80's

    A teacher is teaching a class and she sees that Barack isn't paying attention, so she asks him, "If there are three ducks sitting on a fence, and you shoot one, how many are left?" Barack says, "None." The teacher asks, "Why?" Barack says, "Because the shot scared them all off." The teacher says, "No, two, but I like how you're thinking." Barack asks the teacher, "If you see three women walking out of an ice cream parlor, one is licking her ice cream, one is sucking her ice cream, and one is biting her ice cream, which one is married?" The teacher says, "The one sucking her ice cream." Barack says, "No, the one with the wedding ring, but I like how you're thinking!"

    No mention of Aluminum? No mention of a "shoe keel"? Oh how quickly forgotten. Grumman, Alumicraft, Michicraft where fore art thou? Paddling across a lake, give me a keel for straight paddling. White water, sure, ABS and soft keel.

    great video...it's funny bc I know someone who told me the bow paddler never uses a pry...as an experienced paddler, it is one of the most useful and powerful strokes...they didn't use it so much in this video as they had the bow paddler using the cross bow draw, which everyone I know who uses that, DUMPS!!!

      Kathy Turner Thanks for watching!

    • @QuicoReed
      @QuicoReed 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kathy Turner anyone WHO dumps with a cross bow draw {CBD} just hasn't learned to do it right.As a C1er I can tell you a cross bow draw is extremely useful. Watch Olympic canoeists and you'll see the CBD all over the place.

    • @LynetteChubb
      @LynetteChubb 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both CBD & pry work really well, if you know how to tilt the canoe while doing them.

    • @QuicoReed
      @QuicoReed 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use cross bow draw all the time without dumping. That happens if you don't know what you're doing, due to lack of practice. A pry can work just fine, but it also has its drawbacks, such as when the boat hits a slightly submerged rock with the paddle caught between the boat and the rock. This can also dump the boat or cause the paddle to get knocked out of hand. At any rate, it's all about practice. In decked canoe, C1, cross bow paddling is almost as common as standard "strong side" paddling. So when you use it that frequently, you become extremely proficient at it.

      I think you can pretty much say that whenever says "you NEVER do this", they are probably over generalizing.
