    Im hoping my Calvus are about to drop some fry…..she’s guarding a shell, and the male is close by protecting her.
    I’m probably gonna have to remove all the other fish if she has babies, I’ve got some brichardis (babies) in there in a tangayikan community.
    Your videos might be coming in extra helpful…..big ups fella 👊

      Sorry for the late reply Jon, how did your spawn go? I hope you were able to save some mate. Hope the videos helped you too

    I use a turkey baster to move my fry around

    Have you or do you think black Calvus can be kept by themselves and what would be the minimum set-up for doing so in your opinion? Great vids enjoying your channel.

      You can definitely keep calvus by themselves although they do better with other fish in the tank as they may be too shy to come out. I'd say a minimum 100 litre tank for a breeding pair. Cheers for that, glad you are!

    Hi Jason, you have really good vids here. I would need your help please, I just purchased a 180 litre tank and want to make a tanganyika tank with two different fish in it. One should be a pair of Calvus and the other should be a pair of Julis. You think this can go well? Or maybe I should buy 2 Julis and just one female Calvus? I am still not sure what to do. Also, i dont really want to breed because i dont have so much space and I also dont know what to do with all these fish later. Thank you very much!

    After watch a couple of your videos, i seriously believe that it is so much easier to strip the babies. The multiple problems related to have the parents are not worthy the "benefits of leave the fry with the parents" for example the clown fish in the wild only a few of them survive but in controled setups is around 95 percent.

    Hi Jason. The last time my calvus spawned, I took the shell and the mother out of the main tank and put them in a 2.5 gallon fry tank for about 2-3 days. I then removed her, put her back in the main tank, and within 24 hours, dumped the fry into the fry tank and put the shell back in the main tank. As a result, the male was extremely angry at the female. And about a week later, she was dead.
    Now I have another spawn, same male, different female. How should I handle it differently this time? I plan on taking the shell out (hopefully when she's not in it, which is difficult), dumping the fry into a container and immediately putting the shell and the female back into the tank. I might even leave a few fry in the shell to make both parents believe nothing has changed. What do you think? Is there a better plan? Thanks.

    Hi Jason just wondering why you dont syphon the fry out with a clear hose into a bucket, instead of a net ?

    • @JasonsCichlids
      @JasonsCichlids  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have done that previously when the fry have been under a cave/difficult spot to access with my Neolamprologus tretocephalus fry. However, with these guys being bunched up close together, and sitting so close to light pool filter sand, I worry that I might suck up too many in the one go and get them jammed up in the hose, along with the pool filter sand. Considering how easy they are to catch and are all right at the front of the tank I just take my time and catch them out. These guys are delicate and are worth taking time with.

    Sorry dumb question, how do you remove the female say from the fry tank without her going inside the shell to hide?

    • @JasonsCichlids
      @JasonsCichlids  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have been able to separate her from the shell. Sometimes you just have to be patient with her. Sometimes you'll find her away from the shell with her fry in the corner of the tank. At that point take the shell out (pop it into a holding container, as there may be fry still in the shell). Then you will be able to catch the female out and move her back in with the male. Then move the shell back into the fry tank.

    I wonder about the healing abilities of fish whether or not she will heal 100%

      She has done really well and is pretty much fully healed now thankfully! Still is in a tank by herself though

    Hello Jason, my opinion is: give a chance to the girl. Do not remove her and the fry, try by adding a couple of shell near the nest see what happens probably she will have her agressivity calmed down

      All good mate, she stayed with her babies for the full length of time I could keep her with them. Any longer and she would start to attack and prey on them.
