I just have to say as a 45+ year bassist, I get great inspiration seeing your videos here, and commend you on doing a great job covering these baselines with accuracy and detail! Keep up the great work! You are a wonderful talent!
I don't know how anybody could put a thumbs down on this video. That was an unbelievably good rendition of Dee Murray's baseline, very smooth, well done.
I’m guessing we are about similar in age and I don’t know about you but it was Dee Murray that absolutely hooked me into playing bass. My first exposure to rock n roll was Crocodile Rock and my first real album was Goodbye Yellow Brick road at age seven. Up until then I wanted to be an astronaut. After getting that album and hearing Dee I became a bass player. Absolutely love your covers of his timeless classics. You do him justice in every way. Thanks for another spectacular video!
For me, it was Gene Simmons. I had to work my way up to players like Dee. I agree, he was a masterful player. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave such a great comment.
GREAT JOB, TROY!!!! I did see "TOMMY" when I was in 5th grade and it changed my world! I got my mom's original WHO TOMMY ALBUM out and me and my girlfriends made up dances and did a play called "ACID QUEEN". We danced and acted out to Acid Queen, PinBall Wizard, Cousin Kevin, and "Thinking Is The Best Way To Travel" by The Moody Blues!! Weird!
Thanks Val. Tommy in the 5th grade!? I remember my friend telling me about Ann Margret humping a pillow while being doused with baked beans. "Acid Queen" has some really incredible bass playing on it. There's not any video of those performances around is there?
Thanks a lot on this one. I learned the Who version but this is what our new keyboard player wanted to do. More keys! Wish there was a chord chart! Or bass tabs!
You must be born about 1963 .. same as me. You focus on some of the same obscure songs and artists that are also really special to me.. "Dance w/ Me" (Orleans) and ABBA and this one .. and the story of that movie. I did see it when it came out. Very weird. I also remember Jesus Christ Superstar. Same with me. Elton John was my first favorite artist (after partridge family!).. Great job!
One of my all time fovorites. Entwistle (†) bass lines make you work hard, don't they? I've always admired his 'typewriter style' of playing, as well as his collection of basses. Well done!
This is actually Dee Murray playing bass on this one. Entwistle's isolated part from the Tommy album is out there on TH-cam. It's is pretty interesting to hear, but bears little resemblance to this version. Thanks.
I was the same age and had pretty much the same experience with Tommy, except I saw the movie the same year I heard the soundtrack. Although I learned to appreciate and love The Who's Tommy later in life, the soundtrack is what I hear in my head when I think of that album.
Exactly, The Who's versions of the songs sounded a bit lifeless after the listening to the soundtrack for so long. When the movie came out, the album was only 6 years old but, to me, sounded much older.
Agree, would love to see you play more Dee Murray! There is so little footage of Dee playing, it's great to see what's going on in those great bass lines. This is so good to see and hear, you do a phenomenal job of bringing his playing to life!
If you were disappointed by the heavily-acoustic studio version of Tommy compared to the all-star film soundtrack, you might want to check out the Live at Leeds reissue with the entire live performance of Tommy on it. When I first heard it I was awestruck by how great it sounded live with just the *three* instruments filling in for arrangements that were originally heavily layered and multitracked with horns and orchestral sounds.
i like your covers so much, although i am not a bass player (just hiting some notes for fun). my favourite bass performance is "eminence front" by the who, unbelievable sound. i hope you cover this song one day. i wonder if you like les claypool's style. he, geddy lee and john entwhistle are my favourites
Troy-basic question. For your Fender Jazz that use for Rush/Yes work, what brand and gauge strings do you use? Great videos you release. Wish these were around 20-years ago.
The last year or so I've been using D'Addario EXL220's. You can get a 2 pack on Amazon for $24 or something like that. Before that, I used GHS Boomers, lights...always light gauge. Thanks.
sorry if I'm insinuating this. but it seems to me that during the editing you have accelerated the video and also the audio. or maybe it's the pitch...or maybe i'm wrong!
No problem, but I do no editing at all to my videos. I record them, live, into my camera and then transfer them to my computer from the memory card. What you are seeing and hearing is as I played it. I did not check, but it might be possible that the song was in a slightly higher pitch which was done by the artist, not me.
I've loved The Who since I was 8 years old. My first band in 8th grade was doing the Tommy album. The film bothered me. I loved it yet I would have prefered watching The Who perform it loudly on stage. You see the film is Ken Russels vision. If you have seen any of his movies you know he likes to go over the top on visuals. Bombastic is the word. The Who also were a live band whos music came to life, bathed in energy, baptized in volume and spiriituality. Check out my bass line on you tube,The Who Show doing Pinball. My bass line is reminicent of a late 70s or 80s Who show. It's the energy that distances all bands from The Who.I hope you would study the countless bootlegs and released versions of The Who doing Tommy and then you would see that it's the energy that is the soul of the worlds greatest live band, The Who.
Having heard the movie soundtrack first, the band album sounded pretty subdued and restrained in comparison. Is that you playing the wild looking Alembic?
TJH3113 Yes thats me. Have you heard any of the live Tommy versions out there. Live at Leeds and Isle of Wight or London 69. Those blow everything away!
News for you that wasn't Dee Murray playing the bass that was John Enthwistle The OX" The Who"s bass player ps tune the bullet your fret actions are off

Thank you very kindly for the wonderful compliment. I appreciate it.
What can I say…as I've always maintained, your talent should be on tour with a world class band.
Thanks Lori, that was nice of you to say.
I don't know how anybody could put a thumbs down on this video. That was an unbelievably good rendition of Dee Murray's baseline, very smooth, well done.
If im not mistaken, it was John Entwistle who made that bassline originally for the who.
@@mysteriousarrow Yes but this is the Elton John version and the bass line is played by his bassist, Dee Murray.
Jesus Christ Superstar was my first concert, loved the music then and now!
Awesome!
Excellent as usual Sir!
Thank you! Cheers!

It was 6th Grade for me ! 😁
Thanks so much... I am learning so much from you... this song is yet another example of how I can improve my right hand technique.
Thanks for the nice compliment.

Me too. I think it blows The Who's version away.
GREAT 🎸 !!!
Many thanks!!
You can do the video for bass cover of "JOLENE" by DOLLY PARTON
@@irajic1 I will check it out.
You can also do Fleetwood Mac - Big Love
Great as always...would love to see you do more Dee Murray...especially The Ballad Of Danny Bailey. Keep Jammin'!!!
Thanks. Most people seem to be missing the fact that this is Dee Murray on this version.

Just wonderful! superlatively well done as always! have a great year - n
Thank you very much.
Thank's very good!!
Excellent work.
Great tone
Thank you.
Amazing playing and that bass is a beautiful instrument!
Thanks.
I hate your videos, 8 times out of 10 you take a song that I thought I played to perfection and blow that notion to hell. Keep on doing it
The Who's version is quite a bit different from this one.
I also hate. I discoverd this guy more than an hour ago, and due do these bass videos, I jus t can not turn the computer off!
ya think?!!
haha

Pete Townsend est à blâmer ! Je vais voir The Who samedi !

can you leave the tablature please 🙏

Ok,Thanks good job by the way 🤗
Queen's of the stone age have a few good hits too hint hint
I’m not really familiar with much of their stuff, but I’ll try to check it out.
Well I thought Geddy Lee was the greatest bass payer rock ever had
but it would appear Entwistel could be raiser sharp close.
Well played.
This was actually played by Elton John's bass player, Dee Murray. Thanks.
@@TJH3113 RIP Dee
You're right about Entwistle, tho!
This is off the soundtrack to the movie not the actual album. Nevertheless still is great music
What you say it true.
I remember seeing the Play when it was at the St. James Theatre in NYC …. It worked very well for the music and acting.
@@kbraker510 I saw the musical as well and it was OK. I much prefer the movie soundtrack to everything else.
Tremendous.
I'd have rather been sat in front of Entwistle than Pete.
Thanks.
Same.
Elton John's version of "Pinball Wizard" is awesome! I've always thought his version rocked a lot more than The Who's.
JapaneseMonk I agree.
Davey Johnstone ftw!
i can understand hearing the original album and thinking it sounds weird. It is kindof hollow in comparison to this arrangement.
