      The great Rutger Gunnarsson. one of the true greats. His timing , feel, syncopation and sheer inventiveness were amazing and you have matched him in every department. That Spector sounds fantastic too. What do you use amp wise?

      This bassline is criminally muddy on the original recording, a rare lapse in ABBA's otherwise stellar recording and mixing.
      Incidentally, there's a video on YT of Rutger playing this on the same bass he used for the record about 6 months before he passed. Unfortunately they don't keep the camera locked on his fingers, but you can hear the magic.

    I never knew there was so much going on . Really opened my eyes to start listening to the bass lines more and try to figure them out. Back in the day I would of never thought of trying to play any songs but rock and metal. I was hanging with a bass player well a well rounded musician that opened my eyes to Stanley Clark bought me a ticket to his show and was amazed at how closed minded I was. Since then I try to listen to everything but now you opened my eyes even more. Your playing to me on the song seems spot on watched it three times already before make no this post. Your the man!!! Dude!!! Doing this song makes you cooler in my eyes than I already thought you were. YOU ROCK!! No, I'm not a big fan of 70's pop, but (if we're honest) there IS plenty of music out there that sits outside of our "cool" radius that we secretly enjoy. This song is one of those. Call them "guilty pleasures", if you will, but they are a part of our collective soundtrack.

    Yassssss! That slide at 3:11! I’ve only seen one other bass cover of this tune that does that slide at the end. It’s one of those details that absolutely makes the song. Amazing cover. Thanks for sharing!

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I always try to capture as many minute details as I can and this song had many of them. Thanks for catching that one. Another, stranger one occurs just before the slide at 3:08 where the bass plays a C as a passing tone (which sounds slightly off but adds some tension) when it plays a C# every other time in the song.

    • @observer74
      @observer74 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      TJH3113 Seriously, you captured just about all the little Jamersonisms in the tune. Only thing you missed in my humble observation (and I’m not being a critical prick, only a lover of this bass masterpiece) are the two slides at around 2:35 just after they sing “...and when you get the chance...”. There are two quick slides...like a woo-woo. But again, this is probably the best bass performance of this song I’ve seen on TH-cam. Thank you! Been trying to learn this bass part for no particular reason...and I’m not even a bassist. I’m a guitar player. Lol!

    I'm a guitarist for over 35 years now and i love it. A couple of years ago i've started to define songs into to major contributing instrument on it. So, basically there are guitars-songs, drum-songs and, ofcourse, bass-songs. Dancing Queen immidiatly came accross to me as a major bass-song. And it may be crystal clear on why ! As a childhood song i've grown up on it through the years, but finally understand what made this song soo great. In my humble opinion it's an one of a kind song supported by really great riffs, that where played by the late Rutger Gunnarsson. Due to a lack of stength in my right fingers i will never be able to do this on a bass guitar, so, i sometimes try it on the lower E, and A string on my acoustic guitar just for fun. And then just very, very basically. I never come close, and i never will, and that doesn't matter. But, everytime i look at these covers i'm feeling some compensation for my inabillaty. Thanks, Stephan

      This is why I don't entirely get the disco backlash. Disco had guys like Rutger Gunnarsson, James Jamerson, and Bernard Edwards playing sick stuff on real 4-string basses. Today's computerized dance music doesn't have any feel by comparison.

    Great job. Abba's bass lines can be quite underrated. People tend to get lost in the notion that its "disco". It may be of the era but some of the lines are as catchy and melodic as any you hear today. Just doesnt incorporate the crutch of 5 strings. :) Check out the bassline in their song "Money, Money, Money" . Some tasty chops there! reminds me of McCartney. Love your videos.

    Excellent cover, as usual! I was born in 1958 and was into music at an early age, so before rock/pop evolved into hard rock.metal/etc., I enjoyed the Beatles, Monkees, Neil Diamond, Grass Roots, Simon and Garfunkel, the psychedelic bands, yadda yadda. Then came Hendrix, LedZep, etc. I totally loved and still love 70's hard rock bands and most of the early heavy metal bands. But, I also never lost my enjoyment of pop songs, and still haven't. A good tune is a good tune, period. ABBA was produced so well and talk about hooks. I have loved this song since the first time I heard it. It hit #1 in the spring of 1977 and it will always remind me of playing ski-ball at an arcade in Myrtle Beach after graduating high school and heading south for my "last" summer vacation before entering the real world lol Happy you covered this, I, too, never realized all that was going on. Now I love this song even more :)

      TJH3113 I also recently learned to play this great Rutger Gunnarsson bass line (a little bit differently than how you play it, but that’s all in the interpretation) and I would also have to say that it’s one of the more challenging bass lines I’ve learned in my 30 years of playing. Bernard Edwards is another great bassist from the disco era, who also has some that will challenge anyone willing to attempt to master them. I love your channel, and from what I can tell, you and I must be close in age and grew up being influenced by some of the same bassists.

    I did the "Mama Mia" show for a month and all of the bass parts were transcribed note for note. Not easy! That gave me a completely eye opening perspective on ABBA. I'd often joke that I played all the bass licks that are in Dancing Queen -- I just didn't always play them in the same spot. LOL It's an incredibly busy part that is never obtrusive and always grooving! And the fact that all the other parts are pristine and in a perfect pocket helps. Anyway, I think you did a better job at this one than I did.

      Very cool! I couldn't imagine playing an entire night's worth of this stuff. That's the thing - if I were playing it live I wouldn't adhere so rigidly to what is on the recording. I'd most likely pick and choose some of my favorite riffs and repeat them, or something like that. Thanks Nelson and take care!

    About 6 years ago, I really started LISTENING to what Rutger Gunnarsson was playing on all those ABBA records, he has since become one of my favorite players. Your cover is a fitting tribute to a great musician. And the stuff of your own you added really sounds great! Is there any chance you could put up a tab of this one is there?!

      I'm going to have to check out some more of his stuff. Actually, I'm not adding much, if anything, of my own. It's what he did that I'm leaving out...just little do-dads here and there. I'm sorry, but I don't do tabs. If I did, everyone would be most welcome to them.

      I did the same about ten years ago. I'm a harmonies guy so ABBA has been a favorite. I'm not a super fan and can't say I dig everything they've done. But when they hit... MAN!!!
      I'm on the TalkBass forum. Someone mentioned how great Rutger Gunnarsson on an
      "overlooked player" thread, so natch I had to dive in. Before this I had only listened with the ears of a vocalist. This time I listened as a musician. Not only is the musicianship slick as hell, and not only was Gunnarsson a fantastic player, but the production value of their stuff is a marvel for it's time.

      Well, the preamp I had put into it really transformed the way it sounds. When I first got the bass I wasn't really happy with it. It's true that the "hands" have something to do with how a bass sounds, but I think that phrase is overused. If you pick up another player's bass, you are going to be in the ballpark.

    At the risk of revealing my age, I first knew of this song, not by listening to ABBA, but watching a video of a young people band called ABBA Teens, since I liked one of the girls... Alright, I liked both of them. And yes, you're right: never in a million years did I think I should listen to the bass line -- it sounds interesting. No, siree. So it was quite a surprise to see this among my subscriptions. I thoroughly enjoyed it, Troy. Not sure what I enjoyed more. Your gritty bass tone I always listen to with a mixture of wonderment and envy; your style and technique, which makes your strings seem made out of silly putty mesmerize me... but what I think got me about this video -- what really got me -- was the mixture of the happy rhythm of the ABBA pop song and the masks...
