Thanks for sharing your stories, Tony! You've triggered my childhood memories about your boet Paul and his friend Mike Adair, your home at the top end of Capt Molyneux drive, Stakesby Lewis' farm with the shooting range, phoofy slide and the dam we used to swim in, Mark and Donette - and many others flashbacks from the distant past!
My mate Mimmo Cirillo was the other RAF guy on that's same vehicle. He was sitting in the cab but felt uneasy. He when and sat on the back of the RL and actually saw the land mine it was surrounded by white rock's. He shouted land mine but it was to late.Mimmo only had burst ear drums Mimmo and I always went out together..For some or other reason I didn't go.Mimmo actually hot court marshalled for the taking the doors of the Bedford truck's..We have been friends for 51yrs. He's now living in Australia...My pennies worth.
Well said Mike. I think one of the saddest things was that so many youngsters didn't have the freedom that we had as teenagers. Hell going from Bindura to Centenary Country Club with Bruce & Scott Drysdale for a jol. Sleeping on the lounge floor of some farmer who we met that night. Driving back through Chiweshe TTL the next day. Going down to the Mazoe River with a tent & fishing rods & spending a week there. Visiting mates on farms, driving down dirt roads at night. So much freedom to go where you wanted without worrying about hitting a biscuit tin or getting ambushed
@fightingmenofrhodesia ja John, all 4 of them ended up in Selous Scouts. I know that Rusty did his NS with RLI & was a main manne with the MAG ( much like you 😊). Bruce looked like the template for Vic Mackenzie's " walking armpit" Selous Scouts cartoon character. Wide shoulders, slim hips & a massive black beard. I last saw Scotty during continuous call up when he came out to track a group going back to Porcos in Gonarezhou
Another great interview, thanks Tony, John and FMOR; looking forward to Pt 03. My Best Wishes to all for a great weekend and an even better week. God Bless Always
Another great interview. It might be interesting speaking of Tobacco to do something on the "sanctions busting" that Rhodesia did so well at especially in the case of "Tobacco". I know it was a very important crop there. Deo Vindice
Good to see you back John Van Zyl. Great stories from colour Kryger too.

Always a steep learning curve during that time which made us mature way before our time.
Look forward to part 3.
