This was SO useful, thank you so much, had this exact question earlier today in the Saintsmart CNC FB group as I need to remove a part, paint it and put it back to do an engrave pass. This is fantastic.
Nice one James. I setup a similar thing a few weeks ago. I start most of my jobs from the centre origin, so have got multiple macros setup for each job. I’m making clocks of different diameters at the moment, (ie 12 & 6 inches) so have a Macro labelled for each one that takes the machine through the homing process & then to the workpiece centre. Soooo much easier & faster to get started 😊
Brilliant. I was thinking if that could be done about a week ago to make things easier. Very timely video as always. Cheers. Thanks for pushing me in the right direction.
Thank you for keep adding cnc content just got to building my 3018 that have layed in a corner for 2 years . you made me think i can do cnc too. so thank you!
This is great too because if your first toolpath for example needs a V bit and you use a touch probe you can't accurately set X and Y on a touch probe with a V bit. If you start your job in the same spot on this is very handy.
Another awesome video James. I have been manually homing my machine, afraid to press the "home" button in GCS. Very helpful to know how it should be used!
Good job on this video.. I learned a thing or two.. Two things I would have done to make it more precise. 1: use some 6-8mm guide pins to precisely realign the jig if you should choose to run the machine without it. 2: use an edge finder to locate the origin..
Nice video, but another way is to have the corner of the inside be your 0, 0 when you make the fixture and document what those coordinates are. But as a machinist that runs industrial equipment, I like your channel and have shared it with many people getting started.
Great idea! I'm fairly new to CNC but have already created a corner jig using 3d printing. Your macro idea is perfect for my setup and will try it out myself. Thanks!
That's odd. On some control boards the port of the emergency stop can be close and the same as the limit switch ports. Possibly someone wired it up wrong in the factory 😕
James, great idea to get consistent positioning. I have the Fox Alien Masuter Pro, will the string in your example for the macro pertain to that machine also? Thanks and keep up the great videos you put out!
James I’m struggling with this. On your demo you reset the machine manually/turn it off so it starts at 000 but how do you do this in code without the switch off . Great work though and much appreciated work
Im using candle currently, can you show me how to set repeated position on candle? I know they have these buttons you can set and I cant seem to get to work, please help, i want to learn how to cnc and it frustrating. Thank you
Great video James 👍🏽, I have a genmitsu engraving machine and I use candle to run my g-code am I able to create this function on my machine as it would make life so much easier on setting up, cheers.
Persoanlly I would suggest moving from Candle anyway, but yes, you can create this as a custom button within Candle as well. When you open the settings menu you and scroll down there is an area for creating custom buttons
@@JamesDeanDesignshi James, what would you, suggest to be a replacement? The machine xyz default is useless, and the home button keep trying to run past its limit and misalign the y axis (I probably set up wrong so,how). This could be an elegant solution. I have a genmitsu 4030
Ive set up a couple of waste boards like this for doing coin faces, my problem has been that every time I hit the "home" button on the control software I get "Unknown Error" and nothing happens.
James, I’m so greatfull I found your channel. I am new to this. I have an X-Carve using Easel Pro and was wondering if you can do this same thing in Easel? Thanks for the help Brian
In the interest of saving time, why not setup your home co-ordinates to be in the bottom left corner? Somehow I got this setup by default on my XL 4030. Since all my jobs start in the bottom left corner, the machine does not have to travel as far after it has been homed.
Great video James, I’m looking at buying one of these machines (Vasto)and have an odd question! The StepCraft M series is able to carve at bench level or on a floor if the machine is placed on a floor, is this possible with the FOXALIEN Vasto particularly. Love your fixed position on this video, key for any cnc for ease of operation, in my view. Love the detailed explanation, thanks.
If I do this, my program stops after $H. It just homes and stays idle. If I home manually and remove the $H, everything works fine. Any ideas why would it be? CNC PROVerXL 4030 V2, grbl 1.1h as far as I know (the pne it came with, I did not check the version since nevver connected the machine to the PC).
I really don't understand why you machined that fixture then basically threw away the datum position it could have given you in favour of "eye-balling" your work piece origin. All you've done is introduce un-necessary errors. A better and easier way would have been, in your CAM software, define the origin of the fixture to coincide with the origin of the work piece. That would have automatically given you X0, Y0 without any messing about. Generate the Gcode for the fixture and the work to use the same WCS and you don't need to do anything other than home your machine!

I'm not going to 👍It just amazes me someone would claim to stop watching a video because of the way I pronounce one word 😆
Thats the way Johndiego top!
When i learned one thing in my CNC Apprenticeship, making stuff like this is one of the most important parts for actual work later on

Clever with the macro bit, I like that you can shut it off and turn it back on.

Really useful. I´m a newbie and this trick will help me a lot. Thank you very much!
Great video! I noticed the dust deflectors you added along the y axis . I don't recall seeing them before. Good job!
Just some thin perspex, heated and bent over. They make a big difference

I love your videos James, really helpful to getting me started!
Thank you 😊
Another great instructional video. Thank you
Thanks James, another super helpful video. You are helping me so much in navigating through this new confusing world of cnc! 🙏🏻
Glad its helped
This is genius, thank you I needed this!!
Great to see JD does it the same way I have done it. Seems effective enough. 😉
Perfect. Just what I need to do. Thanks.
I assume the V-Bit will essentially set the center at the home position, and that will apply for any diameter bit going forward, correct?

Excellent as always!
Thanks man. Your channel is great!
Great video! My 4030 always wants to reset during homing... don´t know why.

Are these settings also valid for the Lightburn program?

Does this same thing apply to candle grbl? As far as the codes
Hola puede setearse en candle grbl? Gracias
Nice video, thank you !
I’ve been wanting to do exactly this. Thanks so much 👍
Hope it helps 👍
Goodjob! Thank you for sharing.
Glad it helped :)
Is it the same as g28 and g30.
Thanks. Very useful. For those who don't have homing cycle, they should leave out $H command.

What type of homing sensors does that machine have to be accurate enough?
Depending what definitions you follow they are either lever limit switches or roller lever limit switches.

Hi Brian, I dont use Easel to run the machine so I can't say for sure but I don't think it can.
I use this method I use the home position as the inner corner of the guide so no macro required

You certainly can do that. I just home to the back as I like to get the machine out of the way whilst I setup
Hi, would the settings for the Macro key also work in Candle?
Tried it and it does, thanks James.
I noticed that the Dewalt Router shown in this video is not either one of the models you listed, DWP611 or D26200. What model is it? Good video.
It is the D26200, which is essentially the European version of the DWP611.
Very helpful, thanx

Yes, the bed is already quite low but you can remove it and carve lower, you just may need to drop the spindle down further.
Thank you James

When you cut the corner stop, your desired x0 y0 is just your cutter radius away from your tool path. No need to eyeball that location.
I did realise this shortly after doing the video but it was already live by then 🙈
Couldn't you use an edge finder?
Possibly if I had one
👏👏👏
